  1. I hate when the Sox play the Orioles. Seems like it's a formality that a closer blows a save and the O's walk it off.
  2. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) Also to the mods: you guys locked the s*** out of this thread, I was going to post in it, but when I saw it was locked I was like "f*** yeah we're opening the Trade Winds Forum!!!" but then I come back and you guys haven't done s***. What gives? Seriously, we need that forum!!! That was probably Kyyle, he likes to look at threads and then lock them from his phone because he's a jerkface. I like the idea of bringing in Turner too. He's a little reminiscent of Homer Bailey.
  3. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) What is going to make next years Sox team any better than this one? Looking at what is available in FA, they won't likely be heavily involved. Garcia will be an upgrade offensively in RF, but the pitching problems will still be an issue as well as production at LF, and C and a likely downgrade at 2B, DH. Yes, it is a gamble to trade for prospects, but, you have to gamble a little to get rewards. Yeah, but you don't trade Quintana for anything less than a king's ransom. Good, young cost controlled pitching signed to that kind of contract is incredibly valuable. Everyone has a price, but that doesn't mean you need to compromise and drop yours. As it stands, the Sox might be able to plan on going into the year with a top 4 of Sale, Quintana, Rodon, and Danks. That alone could add 2-3 wins to the team, and that's not including a potential upgrade to the 5th starter. Trades can be made. Guys can improve. There's a lot that can go right.
  4. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) Wite told us last week that his signing was 99.9% certain. That's all anyone needs to know. 99.9999%
  5. QUOTE (hi8is @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Your wishes have been deemed lame by the god of this thread. Literally anything is possible. "I wish we would hand drafted Randy Johnson." "I wish we would have traded a young Ken Griffey Jr. for an A ball catcher." Thus far , the Cabrera trade pieces takes the cake. Good on ya there. Yeah, see, that's why I don't necessarily like it. I mean, I wish we'd terraform Jupiter so I could get more stupider, but that's simply not possible.
  6. Yeah, I think the goal the entire time for Noesi has been to use him as a starter. If not, they'd have removed him from the rotation for Carroll. (frankly, if you're going to use that argument with why Surkamp hasn't been given a chance in the majors, the same argument can be made for why Noesi is still in the rotation and why he's been in the rotation the entire time)
  7. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) Honestly wite & I agree a lot, we shall agree more on things. Now that I am over Dunn and how deeply he hurt me. I still want that f***er gone though. ASAP. I would re-sign Dunn for 52 years and $2.67 billion.
  8. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 08:35 PM) Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 9m Solid regular. He's better than I originally thought. @IIIWoodD: what do you think Micah Johnsons ceiling is? @WhiteSox Reply 2 Retweet Favorite I want to quote this so people read it again. People take these scouts' opinions at face value at all times without watching players or looking at numbers and forming their own opinions. These scouts may see these guys when they are playing poorly or hurt or whatever and may not have a proper read on a player.
  9. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) Why? So the White Sox can get valuable pieces for players they will eventually lose for nothing anyways in what is turning out to be a lost season.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 23, 2014 -> 08:40 AM) Outside of Petco Park, Richard's career ERA is 5.22. His upside is a borderline #5 starter. No thanks. His upside is a good relief arm. If you use him as a starter, you're doing it wrong.
  11. The only reason Scott Carroll is on the roster right now is because he's the 25th man, he doesn't pitch in important games, and he's not pitching poorly. JJ Putz is not the answer, but if the Sox had the opportunity to add a good young pitcher right now, they'd get rid of Carroll in a second.
  12. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 07:46 PM) As a LHSU guy I think there's a lot of upside there. That's exactly the kind of player you want, someone who could turn into something that you can acquire for a low base plus incentives. You don't have to pay him if he sucks. Great. I bet someone would look at him as a starter though. As a RP we should definitely be interested if others pass. I'm glad someone said it. I agree. He's a bullpen arm who was stretched (multiple meanings!) to be a starting pitcher.
  13. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 05:46 PM) Forgive my ignorance, but are FIP & xFIP really going to be predictive when using a 13 inning sample? I tend to agree with your general premise that these are not very good predictive measures at this point, but his other peripherals look hood too...other than the velocity. A flier wouldn't hurt anything, but he's 37. That velocity drop doesn't even have to be due to injury - it could simply be from natural wear and tear. To summarize, on a MLC contract with an opt out after a month, sure. He's not going to take that because some team will give him a shot. EDIT: Not editing. Just wanted gonads a comment: phones are awesome. His stats definitely look "hood.".
  14. I think it'd be worth a shot if it's very, very cheap. His average fastball velocity is under 90 right now, so you hope there's not something wrong, but all the peripherals say that this is a no brainer.
  15. You guys are still crazy if you think it's just gonna be Boozer and a 1st. There will be more pieces to make salaries and such work.
  16. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 04:00 PM) You and many others in this thread are being too logical. That can get you in trouble. Ask any marriage counselor. Boras has a history of not being logical, just greedy. His history with White Sox also shows a hint of vindictiveness. Not sure where it started. My logic, which is often flawed, says that Rodon would be better taking the money now and getting to work instead of drinking beer, eating potato chips, and whatever else 21 year olds do these days. What vindictiveness? The last bad blood between the Sox and Boras was back with like Weaver or Seay or Hill, wasn't it? Those happened almost 20 years ago. They don't like dealing with him, but they haven't really had any problems.
  17. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 04:13 PM) Epic post is epic? Who still talks like that? I do. This is America.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) That would be insane. TBH, I looked back at Lebron's S&T with Cavs. They actually gave up 5 picks total, with zero leverage as well. I thought we'd actually have to give up a bit of a package for this. Eh, two firsts between 2013 and 2017, 2 seconds, and the ability to swap. Any NBA team is going to give that up and not even care.
  19. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) With all the respect due to an ultimate champion, I could not possibly disagree with a statement more. What you just uttered is antithesis to the Enlightenment values that propelled our race into the Industrial Revolution that gave rise to global economy, food surpluses, and advances in medical technology that has increased the quality and length of life of billions of the world's denizens. I shall pray to the pantheon of Abrahamic god figures that, for as long as you hold the belief you just described, you NEVER take up gambling. Epic post is epic. Also, though I am not the first to come to this conclusion, here are the pitching preferences as noted by yours truly. 1) A strikeout is the best guarantee for an out. 2) A walk is never an out. 3) If the batter hits it, you prefer it to be on the ground because it's almost never a home run and the batter will usually not advance beyond 1B. 4) A flyball is preferable to a line drive, but those can be dangerous. 5) You do not ever want to give up line drives. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t&p=2935694
  20. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 02:53 PM) Well, yeah. lol
  21. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 02:33 PM) I think oftentimes too much is made of flyballs. Flyballs are just perfectly fine as long as they result in outs. Hard hit flyballs are different but flyballs themselves are often just a product of using more of the strikezone, i.e. the upper parts. You don't need a blazing FB to effectively pitch up in the zone. As long as the hitters are off balance I really don't care where they hit the ball, in the air or on the ground. The problem is when your fastball averages 87 MPH. There are hitters good enough that you can throw that pitch at their eyes and they'll hit it out of the park. I also don't mind the idea when pitching in a bigger park - use the playing environment to your advantage as best you can - but USCF is a bandbox in the summer and guys that get jammed can end up putting balls out of the park. Flyballs are not the worst thing, but I'd prefer those balls stay on the ground.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 02:10 PM) Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 26m a-rod spokesperson: "all legal matters have been resolved." also from a-rod spokesman: "he has full intentions on playing in 2015." I'm sure the Newark Bears will be looking for a washed up third baseman.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) On the other hand though, if you go through his full season numbers, thanks to the "lots of luck" the last 5 games, his total season numbers are starting to look an awful lot like "pre-injury John Danks". Line drive percentage overall is better than it was in 2008 - not Danks's best year in that but tolerable. Home run rate has returned to normal after skyrocketing last year. Strikeout rate is a tick worse than his normal seasons but a big upgrade from the last 2 years. His BABIP on the season is ~0.015 lower than it has been on average through his career. He could benefit from getting the ball on the ground a little more, I'll agree, but I disagree with your statement that "those will turn into a blowup sooner than later" on the grounds that we've already seen them turn into blowups this season and although he may have gotten a little lucky during that 5 game stretch, his numbers on the season suggests that the luck you're referring to is balanced fairly well by a few poor luck games over the previous month. The problem with making these assumptions is that Danks's stuff has gotten worse in the last 6 years, considerably so, and he really needs to have good command to continue pitching well. The blowups (or at least inconsistency) will happen if 70-75% of the balls he allows in play remain in the air. It's just not feasible to keep limiting people like he has. Over his last 3 games, his HR/FB is at 3.4%, which is well below his career average. For his career, that number is 10.6%. He's not producing many infield popups. It's just a razor thin line he's walking right now and eventually he's either going to have to start producing more ground balls, more swings and misses, or he's going to start allowing more runs. FYI, the last 3 games, here are his balls in play 17 ground balls 29 fly balls (3 infield fly balls) 12 line drives 13 strike outs
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 12:37 PM) I've only seen the humerus break. An old pal got TJS and his first competitive pitch went flying straight into the ground as we all heard an audible crack. He had a gruesome displaced fracture of the humerus Pics or it didnt happen
  25. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 01:45 PM) Right, which is my point. We were all throwing out quotes about Hahn saying that he feels confident he will sign him, etc, and yet Huntington said the exact same things about Appel and didn't get it done. In other words, it means nothing. Appel had a lot less to risk though. The #8 pick's slot value is about $3.2 mill while there are slot values in millions all the way down to about #55, and he could have earned as much as $8 mill. Rodon is risking a hell of a lot more than that and there really is not a whole lot of benefit to doing so.
