QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) Man, this makes me long for the decision. You know that LeBron and Melo are just getting off on this s***.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) EXCLUSIVE: Steve is tired of this s***. Is this the same source that said Derrick Rose was coming back?

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) Well done. edit: what does the league do with the tax on the sox? Turn it into gold coins, fill a swimming pool, and swim in it like Scrooge McDuck.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) But if Boras had done ANY negotiating on his behalf, going back to college wouldn't be an option, would it? Signing an agent ends your college status, i thought. That would leave what, Independent league? Joliet Slammers? Yes, if Boras had negotiated directly with the White Sox, Rodon would lose his amateur status. As an advisor though, he can talk to Rodon and any other parties involved on his behalf.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) ok sox fans ...... Halliburton oil fields are in need of workers..... LA, TX and NM. problem is you need a perfectly clean police report. the company in LA had to go and import something like 300 Asians to man the positions b/c they can't find americans without a police rpt. NM and TX are looking to fill something like 1000 position each by the end of Sept. North Dakota also has zillions of oilfield jobs.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 12:27 PM) Someone else can pay to watch James Shields fall apart. I would LOVE to pay Russell Martin $8m for the next two or three years, though. I'm the one who always suggests overpaying for catchers (hence my 4/$40 for Salty this offseason), but I have no problem giving Martin a lot of money. Say, 2 years, $22 mill - $10 year 1, $10 year 2, $2 mill buyout or $12 mill team year 3.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) "No on Sanchez. You can have Gose and two Single A rando arms." "Ok, but I'm not sending the $10m then." "Send me $8m." "No." ... "I'll keep it in mind. We've got a lot of balls in the air right now." Balls? Did somebody say balls?

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) Dunn + Beckham + Danks + $10m sounds like a nice "stop the bleeding" package. If we could get one decent prospect and a flyer or two back, I'd be all over it. "Just give us Aaron Sanchez and Anthony Gose, they're not even having that good of years in the minors."
-
QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) Im expecting much more along the lines of $80 million as well I am thinking more along the lines of $40-60 million over 3 years with an option. Teams are wisening up to giving older pitchers long term contracts. $80 wouldn't surprise me, just that it would be a mistake. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) Santana also has a history rep of giving up home runs and a fly ball pitcher. At the cell he would get raked. Shields also has a history of giving up home runs. I also wasn't implying the Sox sign either guy. I've always felt quite the opposite, but that's as far as that needs to go.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 10:52 AM) So who's getting cut from AAA? God at this point, who cares? That pitching staff blows. I like what they're doing, but it's pretty god awful.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 10:46 AM) Brian McTaggart @brianmctaggart 5m Astros Minor League pitcher Bobby Doran has been traded to White Sox. He's headed to Triple-A Charlotte. There it is, the trade we've all been waiting for.

Ervin Santana is a good pitcher. He's not as good as James Shields, but it's not by as much as you think. He was coming off a very good season of pitching, was 31 years old, and was offered a qualifying offer. He didn't get signed until March. James Shields is a great pitcher. He's better than Ervin Santana, but not by as much as you think. He could ultimately be coming off a great season or mediocre season, but as it stands right now, his season has been nothing else but slightly disappointing. He will be 33 years old and will be offered a qualifying offer. If he gets $80 million, the team signing him is making a monumental mistake. He's not getting $125 million, let alone $140 million. If he gets $140 million, I will eat a bar of soap.

QUOTE (peppers312 @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) he was slotted at $5.7M and got $6.45. i'm not going to gripe about another $750K if this kid ends up being our #1 prospect. great news this morning! He's already the #1 prospect.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) That Reed trade was downright silly. Look at Reed's stats greg. He f***ing blows. That Reed trade was a stroke of f***ing genius.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 09:34 PM) Laugh all you want, the vacuum created by the Heat's demise will put the Bulls with a healthy Rose, Pacers, Wizards and Raptors in position to take the East before the Cavs get their s*** down and dominate the rest of the decade. I can't believe you guys think LeBron can lead a bunch of young guys who've never even been in the playoffs and now they're supposed to be favorites. It'll take them a year or two, and that's going with the premise that their new coach, who's never coached in the NBA, can actually coach on this level. I can't believe you guys can't see the question marks. By the time the playoffs start, the Cavs would have played 82 regular season games, however many preseason games, and countless hours of practice. They'll have meshed. I mean, LeBron was in Miami for 4 years and over the last 4 years, the Eastern Conference representative has been the Miami Heat. That's not a coincidence. Basically, the [City] [LeBron's] are the favorite to reach the NBA Finals in the [Direction] Conference.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:51 PM) Everyone thought Boras would go for the max allowable under the rules without penalizing the franchise. He got it. The end. Mission accomplished, another satisfied customer in the Rodon family. Even moreso now because he can also proclaim he got more money for Rodon than Aiken and Kolek despite being the 3rd pick. What would have been more interesting would be his reaction as Aiken's agent in his current predicament. You make this sound like some kind of defeat for the White Sox. It absolutely is not. They knew what they were getting themselves into, but they also very likely got a guy who will be in the majors very soon and who has a chance to be very good. He fell to 3 due to an y number of reasons, but the Sox are incredibly happy, and in this circumstance, had no problem whatsoever going over slot, but also wanted to save as much as they could. There was never any rush to get him under contract.

I obviously have to, but I was pretty f'ing dialed the whole time. I kept saying $6.5 mill. I guess, by Price is Right rules, I lose, but yeah.

There has not been much of a difference offensively with Pierzynski the superior hitter thus far. However, a rather small point but a valid one nonetheless, is that Pierzynski has thrown out just 9 of 47 (19%) potential base stealers while Flowers has thrown out 17 of 55 (31%). I don't have the pitch framing numbers handy, but I imagine those are fairly comparable. I couldn't care less either way.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 04:01 PM) How many catchers in baseball have 10+ homers this year? Especially considering his home park for 81 games. Among catchers with 150 PAs or more, Zunino's wRC+ of 90 is ranked 21st in baseball. I don't care how many home runs he has, I care about how good he is offensively. I'm not saying he's a bad player, nor that he can't improve, nor that I prefer anyone on the Sox to him, nor that Schwarber will or will not face the same type of success, but just focusing on home runs when he has a BB rate of 3.9%, a K rate of 33.2%, and overall terrible numbers otherwise doesn't make his home run total worthwhile or good - it makes me, instead, think of JP Arencibia.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) Because he put those numbers up in Oakland, a pitchers haven. His BB/9 rate this season is 2.43 up from 2.25 last season and his career numbers are pulled down by what appears to be an outlier 1.71 BB/9 in his rookie season. He has a 20% LD% as well. In USCF more of those fly balls and line drives turn into HR's at USCF and he isn't aided by the extra outs that are picked up in Oakland in the vast foul territories. He is also currently operating with an unsustainable BABIP (.262) and has a FIP of 4.40 and a xFIP of 4.49. His fly ball percentage is 47.1% at home and 36.3% on the road, I would not think that discrepancy to be sustainable either. -I would say the 2.43 BB/9 is more of the outlier pulling his career numbers up, given his 1.9 BB/9 coming into the year and 1.5 BB/9 in the minors. -That LD% means virtually nothing to me given that Quintana has a 22.4% LD% this year and a 21.2% for his career. Chris Sale had a LD% of 23% in 2012 and 21.4% last year. You'd prefer it to be lower, but it's not in a bad spot. -A career FB% of 41.3% and 41.6% this year is more than adequate. You prefer him throwing more grounders, but he's not dependent upon flyball outs the way a guy like Chris Young or Marco Estrada are. -A .262 BABIP is not otherworldly unsustainable though, especially given his career BABIP of .291. This isn't the pitching version of Tyler Flowers hitting .360 with a .600 BABIP. -A high flyball percentage in a pitcher's park and a lower flyball percentage on the road would indicate to me a smart pitcher who works well in his environment.
