QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) More than likely if this were to happen, the Rays would acquire the prospects and/or players that the White Sox we're looking at for DV. I don't think so. David Price is worth very top prospects - your top of the rotation arms and stud bats. Ben Zobrist is worth good prospects to potential top prospects - your mid to top rotation arms and good starting players. Dayan Viciedo is worth medciore to sort of good prospects - your projectable rotation guys, platoon players, and guys with tools who haven't put it together, are incredibly young, are raw, or some comination of those last 3.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) My favorite difference between Sale and Kershaw is the fact that Kershaw will make $164 million from 2014-2019, Chris Sale will make $56.65 million. Yeah, I wouldn't dare question who is more valuable. As Dave Cameron pointed out in his trade value series, Chris Sale is far and away the most valuable pitcher in the game today.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) I kind of wonder if Sale still has the 99-100 he had when he came up out of the pen if he wanted it. He seems to hit 96-97 with some amount of regularity. I doubt it right now, but I think if he worked out solely out of the bullpen, he'd get there again. Think of the 1600M run versus the 100M dash. If you work solely on one of those, the other is going to come up quite a bit short, and if you do both, you'd be ineffective in both.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:35 PM) Sale throws a bit harder than Clayton too, right? But ya, I'm not arguing against Kershaw. This year, Sale is at 93.4, Kershaw is at 93. Not a huge, huge difference. Seems they both sit in the 92-95 range, with Sale reaching peak velocity a little more often.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:12 PM) Actually, he's still getting better, across the board, so this is premature. While he's definitely regarded as one of the best in the game currently, his ABSOLUTE ceiling is the best-of-his-generation, IMO. Kershaw is the guy with the best possibility of achieving that status, but does Clayton, or anyone, have more raw talent than Sale? I don't think so. Eh, I think Kershaw is a better pitcher than Sale overall. I don't think he quite has the wipe out slider, but he has a cleaner delivery, it's harder to pick up the ball, and he's better at holding runners. They're both incredible pitchers.

Split this out of the MLB Catch-All and combined them, given Buehrle's iconic status around here. It really is a great breakdown of what makes Buehrle a great pitcher. It's not a stretch to say that Buehrle is the greatest defensive pitcher of his era, both before and after the ball is thrown, and it's what pushes him over the top. He's just an incredibly unique pitcher.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) Jon Morosi @jonmorosi 11m Mariners are having ongoing trade discussions with Rays regarding David Price and Ben Zobrist, sources say. No deal imminent. @FOXSports1 Taijuan Walker in Tampa is not very funny.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) "What are we going to do with all these starters now that Axelrod has figured it out? Sale, Peavy, Floyd, Danks, Quintana, Santiago AND Axelrod?!?!? That's seven starters!" What is "Keep, trade, surgically repair, keep, keep, trade, and non-tender then sign then trade?"

It's a slow news day Oh, mine was that time he won a game, didn't he outduel Felix or something? So that was actually kind of cool.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 11:25 AM) Far better than Moises Alou's dugout antics. "Speak for yourself." - R. Kelly

Also worth pointing out is that the Sox are likely going to try and do the same thing the Rockies did, which is to slip him off the 40 man. They will wait a bit longer - probably in hopes that the Rockies deal someone and have to add a couple more guys on their 40-man to fill it up. Consider this: He got through the entire NL unscathed. The bottom 5 teams of the AL did not want him. It's not inconceivable to think that the 9 teams above the Sox in the AL will pass on him to put him on the 40-man as well. He's a 24 year old pitching poorly in A ball with a golden arm. Nobody is going to claim him if he goes on waivers, save perhaps the Rockies.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 10:35 AM) The list goes on and on with guys who made it who were never highly ranked prospects, I agree Wite. Its an awesome thing about baseball, talent comes from all difference places at different times for everyone. However, the overwhelming majority of stars were on these types of lists and while there are plenty of busts, it's still relevant. The general mantra is just keep bringing in talent. You can target specific positions at the AAA and MLB levels to fill holes for the big club, but just keep infusing talent.

QUOTE (PorkChopExpress @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) And now imagine that with the money the Sox have to utilize this offseason, they go and sign Sherzer or Shields. Nope, no thank you, no long term contracts to free agent starting pitchers, thank you

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) Ryan Howard's another interesting name, depending on how much the Phillies eat...and it would have to be around $35 of the remaining $60 million on his contract. What that would cost the White Sox, no idea...but he's been terrible this year. To the point where he's better against lefties than righties bad. Ryan Howard is not an interesting name at all.

Paul Goldschmidt was the MVP runner up last year, led the league in homers, won a gold glove and a silver slugger. He's having another great year this year too. He was also never ranked as a top 100 prospect. Robinson Cano is considered the best 2B of this generation of players and he is widely considered the best in the game at his job now. He signed a $240 million contract over 10 years. However, he, too, was never a top 100 prospect. These rankings are nice, and I'll never discourage them from being posted or discussed, but they are ultimately meaningless.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 10:54 PM) You guys could have called the cops on Ozzie and got him in a heap big pit of trouble. Can't have open containers. Stupid and they'll keep you in the jail 24 hours I bet. Typically, as long as the patron isn't intoxicated, it's an open container violation, which is just subject to a fine.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) Davidson will need at least another year in AAA. Offensively he is another Tyler Flowers. He will probably hit 10-15 HR but he strikes out better than 1 out of every 3 ABs and he does not draw many walks. He is a mediocre defender probably similiar to Gillaspie. Davidson is still 23 so maybe by 2016 he figures it out. Yet he has 17 homers at the all-star break this year. He's a 20-30 homer potential guy.

Maybe it's just healthy skepticism, but how does Javier Baez remain in the top 10 with a batting line of .240/.305/.449/.753, a K/BB rate of 4, and a K rate of 31.6%?

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) Ok I should've said I wana see Micah for the last two months. Just to see him. His speed is electric. Would just like to see him get some majors ABs to see how he'd handle it. Semien would definitely be my starter for next year though. If Semien is your starter for next year, then you want to see Semien over the last two months. It seriously makes absolutely no sense to bring up Micah Johnson for 2 months while Semien remains in AAA only to demote Micah Johnson at the beginning of next season to bring Semien up to start full time. Think about the logic behind it. If you want to see Micah play, you can get an MiLB subscription. They are fairly cheap and you can see all kinds of talent. I don't mean to be a jerk about that either, but just because you want to see a guy play doesn't justify them being on the MLB roster. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) And that extra $100 million you noted? I meant as players, but yes, the $100 million too.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:53 AM) Bobby Jenks, Matt Thornton, Gavin Floyd, John Danks....all thought to be expendable and a lost cause by their former teams before they got here. Is this guy going to work out? Who knows, there's a good chance not. I don't see how this is a move anybody would complain about. Gavin Floyd was acquired via Freddy Garcia, who looked like a great pitcher that September and a guy that had re-invented himself. John Danks was acquired for a good pitching prospect in Brandon McCarthy. Neither one of those teams thought their pitchers were broken, nor had they given up on them.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:45 AM) I joked about the guy, but of course I see no issue with claiming anybody with a whiff of talent. I just wonder that if a team as devoid of pitching like the Rockies dumped him, the chances of him amounting to something are even slimmer. No, you're right, he probably is never going to make it, and he might not get to AAA, but the talent is tantalizing. He'd been with the Rockies organization for a long time and they grew tired of him. Consider how Sox fans feel about Jared Mitchell. He's never done anything, they're likely never going to get anything from him, and they'll likely get rid of him for a song at this point. At some point, it's just time to move on, and someone else will give Mitchell playing time.

Matt Kemp has put up a .269/.329/.414/.743 line over the past 2 years, has played poor defense, has become an injury prone player, and he's due $107 million from 2015 through 2019. There's virtually no difference between Matt Kemp and Dayan Viciedo except that Viciedo has youth on his side.
-
QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) ...Or that his BA against is .322. Colorado has a worse pitching staff tha White Sox; so we pick up Raul and put him on the 40 man roster... He throws 99 MPH. Sometimes, you take a chance on these guys and they turn into all stars. Forget about his numbers. Maybe it's OK to stop being cynical at every turn and realize that they can also just get rid of this guy for virtually no cost whatsoever too. There is no risk and a very high reward.

Does extended Spring Training ever end? Because this guy seems like he needs to be there for the next year.
