  1. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 10:25 PM) While we're on the weird bodily things kick - I was having trouble with my ear clogging up while sleeping. Excess ear wax, ultimately. Used some drops and it's disgusting what came out of there. What is it with you and weird things happening to your head? You had a sty in your eye and now you have giant gunk balls falling out of your earholes.
  2. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 09:20 PM) Just saw that the Pirates called up Brent Morel from AAA where he was hitting .243 with 3 HR's. Injury replacement, just another body for the bench. Maybe he gives really good back massages or knows the best place in Pittsburgh to get a burrito.
  3. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) Who is wite 99.9999% sure will be better? Trick question, the answer is always Lyle Mouton.
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) Man, outside of this board (where everyone for the most part sees the forest and the trees) it's funny how many Bulls fans hated this trade - probably something like 80%. So much whining about how the Bulls are stupid to give up so many assets. But these are mostly the same people bemoaning another "Plan B" offseason because our conservative front office can't ever close deals and is too risk-averse/overvalues its assets to pull off any significant deals. Complaining about either one of these things is ok, but both? That just makes you look like a f***ing idiot. It's because people see that "zOMG ur given up 3 gud playerz for 1 WTH" without realizing how star oriented the NBA really is. This isn't baseball or football. One guy can literally change the landscape for a team. The 2006-07 Celtics went 24-58 and had the second worst record in the NBA. They brought in Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, filled their roster with vets and rookies, and went 66-16 and won the NBA title. THEY IMPROVED BY 42 GAMES WITH THE ADDITION OF (essentially) 2 PLAYERS (plus bench mob types). The Bulls would be insane not to make that trade.
  5. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 06:35 PM) The Pirates have just recalled Brent Morel. Beckham can play 3rd. We FINALLY have a spot where Beckham would be a big upgrade. Just an injury replacement. They don't burn an option on a guy they like and if they lose Morel to waivers (they won't), they don't care. He's really fallen off. There was a time when he hit .320 in the minors. He's hit something like .250/.320/.350 this year at the minor league level. Back troubles man. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 01:56 AM) I wish Morel the best. Always liked him. Is he healthy finally? Poor Beckham. One of the biggest busts in Sox history considering where he was picked? No. The guy was in the majors and was a regular for 5 seasons. Top 6 picks of the 1985 draft: Brewers - BJ Surhoff (34.3 WAR) Giants - Will Clark (56.2 WAR) Rangers - Bobby Witt (15.1 bWAR) Reds - Barry Larkin (70.1 WAR) White Sox - Kurt Brown (never played in majors) Pirates - Barry Bonds (162.4 WAR)
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 05:04 PM) I don't understand how a pitcher can continue to get so unlucky. Why would sox be better against the #1s Sale faces than the #2s Q faces offensively? Why would this be such a long-term trend? I don't understand how he is getting unl...OH YOU MEAN WINS AND LOSSES. Wins and losses are silly. Either way, Quintana was the Sox #1 starter out of the break in the second half, and those matchups rarely hold true what with off days and the like anyways.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) I wouldn't mind taking a chance on any of those 3 in return for Beckham, who's had just about the most chances of anyone in the Sox org. The Mariners aren't exactly in the market for a 2B.
  8. QUOTE (TRU @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 03:01 PM) Is there really a rush though if your cleared to play? Derrick Rose certainly doesn't feel so.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) Except it's the White Sox and Gordon is still a fan favorite to little kids, so they won't do that in all likelihood. It will be something like Beckham for Smoak/Montero/Ackley to attempt to save face for both organizations. If Hahn went to the media and said "We are keeping Gordon Beckham because he is a fan favorite to little kids despite his vast struggles on the baseball field," what do you think the general reponse would be? They are likely keeping him to try and get something for him and/or because of his pedigree and talent. There's no other reason.
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) Thanks. I'd like to accumulate some of those. If we could get something like that for Becks, it would be worth eating some salary. Again, I don't think anyone would and I'm too lazy to look up who all won the competitive balance picks and whether they even have a need at 2B. For Viciedo, I could see the cost-benefit analysis fitting. At the very least, you are getting what amounts to be a fairly average hitter with big upside who is still cost controlled for a few years. For Beckham, a guy who has hit worse this year and is a free agent after next year (and likely will be after this year if/when he's non-tendered), I don't see it being worthwhile.
  11. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 07:18 PM) Adrian Peterson Yeah, or Robert Griffin III I understand that we want to see him back, and it'd be really cool to see him back before the end of the year given the severity of his injury, but there's no need to rush back.
  12. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 01:42 PM) It's hard to figure Hahn. He dumped Thornton quickly for a rule 5 eligible. But he really seemed to hold out for the best offer with Peavy (worked, but had to find someone who wasn't in the market for Peavy in order to get what they thought was a top prospect) and Rios (not so much). With Thornton, I think he had a certain threshold type of player in mind, and jumped when he got that sort of player. Jacobs is gone and off to Arizona now anyways. Peavy always held value, and he held out for the best package he could. Rios didn't have a ton of value without the Sox eating some salary, something they usually oppose doing. They put him on waivers knowing full well that they wanted to get Garcia an extended look and no longer wanted/needed Rios on the team, and he got as much as he possibly could (which, yes, was simply Leury Garcia).
  13. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) Davidson has 18. Yes, the B-R tool was complicated and confusing (I didn't use the drop down sorter). Wilkins is still 2nd with his 25.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:43 AM) He has been trotting out to the mound a lot more often this year, so he's getting a little more exercise. It doesn't look like Coop ever opts for just some soup and a salad for lunch. I don't understand how he has time to eat when he never stops talking.
  15. This could change by the end of the day's games, but right now Andy Wilkins leads the IL in homers with 25. The next closest is a 3 way tie at 2nd between Steven Souza, Zach Walters, and Ruben Gotay with 15. Jordan Danks and Josh Phegley are tied for 3rd/5th with 14 a piece. The only player with more in the PCL is Adam Duvall with 26. He's a seemingly similar prospect in a much more hitter friendly environment. Hadn't considered the Thome thing. That's a legitimate possibility.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) Despite the fact that the White Sox could use a LH hitting DH next year, signing Dunn on a 1 year deal just doesn't fit what we're seemingly trying to do, which is put together guys who can contribute long-term. It'd be really nice to avoid spending money on that position next year if we didn't have to. If they strike out on all of their targets, and Dunn also strikes out on all of his possible landing spots, I could see him back. Also, the striking out thing is most definitely a pun.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:59 AM) Yes, but the Sox got zilch, although there wasn't much complaining about it at the time. And Pedro Hernandez was part of the trade that sent Liriano over to the Sox, for whatever that's worth. Speaking of Quentin, he's been absolutely brutal this year. You wonder if maybe, finally, years and years of being injured has finally caught up to him.
  18. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 07:16 PM) Saturday is a DH so that would be fun, but if I don't find anybody else to go I'm taking my 6 year old and the DH probably isn't going to work with him, so then it's probably Sunday. I had been so hoping to see Axelrod pitch I can't believe they got rid of him right before coming to Louisville. Well, he pitches for Louisville now, so you might still get your Dylan Axelrod craving quenched.
  19. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) Speaking of Soptic, here are his numbers..... http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?s...&pid=573168 Yikes, great trade Rick Hahn Yes it was. Hard to blame the Giants for making the trade though because Gillaspie was out of options and they weren't going to carry him, so at the very least, they got a guy that can throw a ball through a brick wall.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 10:01 AM) The Cubs are advertising Eddie Vedder singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. I believe they are at rock bottom. There is a 99.9999% chance that Vedder is wasted while doing so. He's a soak.
  21. QUOTE (glangon @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) That has to be the best sum up of why some players get traded for so much at the Trade Deadline. Absolutely brilliant. Would this make Alex Rios and Jesse Crain "Fat Chicks" Rios, yes. Crain seems more like a nerdy girl who you want to believe is attractive, but she never gets that way and you eventually just forget about her.
  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 08:44 AM) The results in his AZL appearances should mean nearly zero to anyone. His velocity was good, he wasn't missing spots a lot, and the hits he gave up were not hard-hit either. This outing should have no relevance to evaluating him, at least statistically. Once he gets going in W-S for a bit, the numbers may mean something. This is important. Guys in the AZL are generally young and raw players with it also being a place for players to rehab. This means they likely haven't developed the instincts or skills to quickly get to balls in the hole or necessarily make accurate throws. This is why K's, BB's, and velocity are much more important, especially in the low minors.
  23. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) Because he's a bad catcher. Needs a new position. It wouldn't surprise me if he hit in the majors, even though his 200 at bats last year were terrible. I am surprised that there hasn't been more market for Dunn. Just as a bench bat, much less a platoon DH, would have some value. I'm guessing there probably has been, but Dunn is a fat chick at a bar. Nobody is going to go up to her first, but by the end of the night, someone will be desparate enough to take her home.
  24. The best you are going to get for Gordon Beckham is a guy like Jeff Soptic or Cleuluis Rondon, someone who is talented but is absolutely as raw as raw can be. More likely you end up with a AAA reliever who puts up good numbers in the minors but has 1 1/2 pitches and can barely break 92 MPH or you outright DFA him.
  25. Wilkins vs LHP this year - .241/.259/.454/.713, 2.7% BB rate, 18% K rate He seems like he could be useful as a bench player, but with a lack of versatility (he can "play" 3B, and I'm sure he could eventually "play" LF and RF, but he'd likely be near disastrous out there), it's hard to find a roster spot for him other than in limited spells. EDIT: If he could draw walks, he'd remind me a bit of Brian Daubach.
