QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:27 AM) This is not true. Why do people keep saying this? It's still the top 10 only. I've said this like 5 times on this site already. A couple years back, the Mets couldn't sign Bourn for the same reason. It's the top 10 picks even though the Astros have 2 of them. There's more ambiguity to it than that (and more than I initially thought), but it would be ridiculous to not protect the worst 10 teams' picks. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...ticle-1.1261628 The Mets had an offer on the table, but the decision of whether or not that pick would be protected would have been decided by an independent arbitrator. There was no yes or no answer, but the decision was delayed. Once Cleveland offered the same deal, Bourn jumped.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:32 AM) offer salary help for a decent "A" prospect. You get an A prospect for Jose Quintana (plus some). You might get a C- prospect for Gordon Beckham. -
Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) that hunt is hurting b/c the sox could've really used another high 1 rounder..... wish the sox had the mentality of a HOU, sCrub, or even the marlins, aim for high draft pick. No, no, no, no no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) I will say the changes in Miguel Cabrera are interesting, since he was brought up. He had by far his best power years with Prince hitting behind him. Prince left, and he is having his worst year in half of a decade. He's also 31 and is on pace for 54 doubles. He was also injured and surgically repaired last year after the playoffs (though done arthroscopically). And, frankly, he's still having a great year at the plate.

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:00 AM) Comparing Abreu to Cabrera is apples to oranges. Cabrera actually has lineup protection behind him. Lineup protection is a myth unless you're hitting in front of Barry Bonds.

Given what relievers are getting on the open market, I want the Sox no where near Andrew Miller. He could easily command a $25-30 million contract, and given the fickle nature of bullpens, that seems like an absolutely terrible investment.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) It ends when the team actually IS a few pieces from being a serious threat. Right now, we're an entire bullpen, a starting C, and at least two decent starters from being a serious threat, and we could really use at least one corner OF as well. I really want to see what Taylor can do in LF or RF from August 1 on.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) I think you can have the best of both worlds here. I really don't think it matters if the Sox finish the season with 75 wins or 81 wins. I honestly believe Hahn will be aggressive in the FA market this winter regardless. I also have noticed that Hahn and the organization are finally putting a premium on draft picks. If you look at the farm system, it has improved quite a bit from where it was in 2012. The organization and most other MLB teams know that you need to build from within in today's game. Especially with the limitations of the new CBA. With that said, if the Sox are in the bottom 10, they can get that coveted first rounder AND have a solid chance of obtaining a top tier free agent with a risk of only losing a second rounder. Another thing to consider is some of these FAs might not even cost a pick if they were denied a QO. In my opinion, we will not see much of this as teams want draft picks. The best case scenario will be for the Sox to drop in the bottom 10, sign Shields and possibly a C and new DH, get another talented first round draft pick and be ready to compete in 2015. The best case scenario is if the White Sox get hot, make the playoffs, and win the World Series. And, given this season, there is no best case scenario in which the Sox have a top 11 pick next season. It's an OK or acceptable scenario, but nowhere near best case. It's just merely not a bad thing if they end up with a top 11 pick.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 01:54 AM) LOL. Why "please no?" He's not a bad righty. Probably cost 13 mill a year though for 3-4 years. He'll probably cost $18-20 million over 4-5 years. It's not 2004 greg.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 09:17 AM) Lol at our B and C level prospects being too much for a top ten pitcher... You say this (and everything behind it)... QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 09:17 AM) But with all that said we aren't nearly in a place to be even considering a deal like that and I'm pretty positive Hahn isn't. ...and then follow it with this. Do you understand what I'm getting at?
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 08:52 AM) This is where I am too. I would love for the team to convince Hahn that he needs to improve the MLB roster this offseason. While having a protected pick reduces the pain of signing top free agents, it also substantially reduces the incentive. I think we're the same person, which also makes you a smellface. So...suck it.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 07:54 AM) welcome to the site, these guys are the best knowledgeable group of people you can find. the mods do a wonderful job outside being professional baseball employees. I was taught in the 70's when I was playing ball the second pitch the was equally important is the running high fast ball which was perfected by, according to my coach, sandy kofax (sp) . only to being use sparingly when you need a K. no offense, who is your son? His son is Bradley Salgado, reliever for Kannapolis.

Gillaspie almost qualified for batting title race

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 08:15 AM) Also, Conor seems to be taking his bat into the field lately, which is another concern that is being alleviated. I do believe that is illegal, good sir. -
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 05:44 PM) "The Dodgers recently inquired about Phillies starter Cole Hamels, and were asked for a return that included all of Joc Pederson, Corey Seager, and Julio Urias. Los Angeles indicated it had no interest in a deal with that framework, but Philadelphia has not move yet from that asking price. The Phils are telling clubs that it wants three top-tier youngsters and another mid-level prospect in return for Hamels." Per MLBTR. Good luck with that Philly. Jesus. Maybe one. I honestly have no idea how Ruben Amaro Jr still has a job.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 09:35 PM) Exactly. This is what I've been trying to say and Dick Allen says it beautifully. John Danks would look good in the Sox rotation for some time to come IMO. Noted.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 08:15 AM) it is 10 now being protected, I always thought it was 15? also, how does the QO comes into effect if the team doesn't offer it? It will be 11 due to the Astros incompetence. It is normally the top 10 that are protected. If a team does not make a qualifying offer, the free agent is not subject to a first round pick.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 05:38 PM) No reason to DFA him. He's still better than L Garcia. Send L Garcia down. Leury Garcia is not his replacement at 2B. Marcus Semien, Micah Johnson, or Carlos Sanchez would be. They'd likely be better. -
Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?
witesoxfan replied to sin city sox fan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) I'm not calling for his head, I just don't think he's very good. Maybe he can improve. Maybe I was expecting more in year three, and yeah it's real tough to look good with a terrible pen. I think that his moves have generally led to lower run scoring totals, primarily. I though he was worse with the bullpen maneuvering last year, but he's making new mistakes this year. Maybe that will help him learn more faster, or maybe his ability to anticipate will always be an issue. Regardless, he's not going anywhere soon, I realize that. I've said before that Robin has Torre-esque qualities that could make him a good manager of a good to great team. But I do wonder if what I see as tactical deficiency prevents the team from getting over the hump, because the margins are small. I think this is a really good, well reasoned post with a lot of really good food for thought, and it's absolutely fair criticisms of Robin. Just wanted to say that. -
Just an FYI, we do have a preliminary list ready. Regarding the time line, I think we're going to hold off on it until after the deadline in case the Sox make any additions that will need to be added. I bet you guys will never guess who's #1

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) Why has Hahn not DFA'd Beckham yet? 3 viable options sitting at AAA, Beckham hitting .122 in July....what is the hold up here? Just do it already. See if you can get anything, even a team eating his salary. There's no harm right now. Plus you save on service time as well. -

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) Who's trying to DFA Gillaspie? I mentioned it once and said "who cares if they lose Conor Gillaspie? [sic]" I was obviously incredibly wrong on that one. -

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 04:09 PM) I think most of us are looking at it at a net gain or loss for a typical season estimate, and not trying to isolate it to specific games. At least I was. How many wins has Maddon been worth? Not easy to define well. It's not, which is why I have difficulty making objective claims like this. Obviously, a manager's job is to put his team in the best position to win, and sometimes managers struggle with that, but it's not as if they don't improve over time. As I said previously, that is such a small scope of the job that to fire someone simply based off a few mistakes is incorrect. How do the players respond to him? How does he respond to the players? How does he handle the media? Frankly, people on here may be better in game managers than Ventura - I won't argue that point. But if they were to go into the dugout, do you think they'd command the respect of the clubhouse? That's about 40 people that have to believe in you and respect what you're doing. -

How many games has Robin won with his managing? Don't worry about the "oh, any manager would make that move late in a game." Just how many games has he won?
