QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 09:14 AM) Because the Sox's defense has been stellar? Haha. Errors are stupid, but at least those don't count against WHIP. Looking up the numbers though, I'm overrating the Sox range. They do need rangier and more athletic players.

Slow pitch softball thread

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 09:12 AM) Im not calling Chili a liar, all I am saying is I have been playing for 18 years and he just declared himself the single greatest pitcher in all my 18 years playing softball /hawk Bout time you recognize -
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 09:02 AM) Dude's whip is over 1.5, that is baddd. Eh, BABIP of .339 compared to his career .304, and the Angels defense has not been that good this year. That will create quite a few more hits than normal. On the Sox, that WHIP would be in the 1.30s or so.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 09:03 AM) Additionally, and maybe because he has never been the guy who gives max effort very often (which I am not sure isn't the way to go, to be honest), he has aged incredibly well. He's in outstanding physical condition, is not particularly prone to injury, and given that he's stolen 26 of 32 bases this season, doesn't seem to be close to slowing down yet. I think he'll be one of those guys who doesn't decline physically until his late thirties. It's hard to think of a better athlete in recent Sox history.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 09:32 PM) So here is the obvious question: Why don't the White Sox have a hitting coach who is eliminating the flaws in his approach and swing? Because if eliminating holes, refining mechanics, and improving tendencies were that easy, every guy who could hit the ball 500 feet would be Barry Bonds. It's not an easy process.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 09:46 PM) Trade Semien? WhereTF is he gonna play boys Christ, DH him at this point. If he keeps hitting, you play him wherever the hell you can

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 08:52 AM) His only meaningful background is being a terrible MLB player. There's no point to getting rid of him now but since there is 0% chance he's with the Sox next opening day it doesn't matter either way. I disagree strongly with this

Just because I like to give hammerhead s*** Joe Blanton - 3.79 xFIP James Shields - 3.83 xFIP Also, in related news, I would not mind the Sox picking up Joe Blanton next year. And I am serious.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 08:33 AM) I think at some point tonight is the deadline. My question is, If they fail to make a deal can another team claim him? I am pretty sure they can't. If no deal is reached, he is removed from waivers. The Sox could then expose him to waivers again, but at that point the Sox would cede rights to his contract if he were claimed, at which point they would lose him to the claimant.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 08:25 AM) Don't try and draw up comparisons between him and Flowers. Flowers has been up for 5 seasons, 3 full ones. He's bad. Phegley will likely be bad too, but he has time. I still would not mind getting a longer term solution at C since we have the cash. He played in 18 games the first 2 seasons and had 35 plate appearances. His first game in 2011 was July 19th. This "3 full seasons and 5 total" is a straw man argument. He has 575 plate appearances in his career, which is about 1 full seasons worth of plate appearances for a catcher, perhaps a bit more. Yeah, letting that go for free sounds like a good idea for a team that needs young, cost controlled players with a successful minor league track record. I don't have high hopes for Flowers either, but getting rid of him right now is irrational and would be a person acting on impulse rather than logic and reason.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 04:17 PM) They have Shields next year right? If they make the playoffs either this year or next year then I'd figure some people will say it's Ok. They are dumb then. Without Nick Swisher, the White Sox don't make the playoffs in 2008, but you don't see people claiming his acquisition from Oakland was a good one.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 03:03 PM) Fun fact: Wil Myers only has .6 less WAR than James Shields and he's only played in 41 games. How does Dayton Moore still have a job? That was such a dumb, dumb trade. Who didn't see this coming?

This makes too much sense for both sides not to happen

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 03:38 PM) I respectfully disagree. We're talking about Alex Rios here. I think their fan base, if knowledgeable, knows he is far from a savior or even a great ballplayer. I'd think some of their fan base won't want him at all. If you are to keep personal feelings aside, I think you know deep down that Rios is a decent ball player. He can be much more, but he's never going to be much worse than average.

That was a wonderfully written piece. That certainly paints Hawkins' future much brighter than his numbers themselves do.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) You will know in 72 hours No, Casper Wells is gone.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 03:08 PM) I've never seen a guy of his caliber being claimed off waivers twice. Pffft you say this the day the Sox lose Casper Wells to waivers after a successful claim earlier this year.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) How does it work with what is coming back? If what the Sox want is on the 40 man, wouldn't they have to clear waivers as well? I think the Sox will try to buy a prospect, but if that fails will just let him go. Whatever players on the 40 man they wanted to trade would have to get by Houston. That's it.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 02:31 PM) If Choo gets that then Boras truly will have earned his money. $20 mill may be on the high end, but I don't see any way he will get less than $16 million
-
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 02:22 PM) Nah. Sign Ellsbury and I'll be a very happen man. Tank to 1st, outfield of De Aza, Ellsbury, Garcia. Ellsbury is represented by Scott Boras. So is Shin Soo Choo. All teams get an additional $25 million this year. Keeping that in mind, be aware that Michael Bourn signed a 4 year, $48 million contract with the Indians. Bourn is not as good as either of them, nor is he as well known. You are legitimately talking about both of those two players getting upwards of $20 million a year. Just so we're aware.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 02:12 PM) I dont know how much you've looked at the upcoming free agent class, but there isn't a fix there for either position Morales, Morse, Lind, and Morneau are all possibilities at 1B. Morales is the preferred choice, but the others would suffice.

Relevant: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2013-anti-t...orst-contracts/ QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) That's pretty scary about Fielder. 2009 wRC+ 161 2010 wRC+ 136 2011 wRC+ 161 2012 wRC+ 153 2013 wRC+ 115 And 2010 was considered a bad year by his standards. This year has been nothing short of abysmal. But abysmal Fielder still has a higher wRC+ than anybody on the White Sox. That's pretty funny, I guess. You mean "anybody on the White Sox EXCEPT Dylan Axelrod." Oh, and Dunn is at 114, so that's a wash.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 01:55 PM) I wonder if Carlos Sanchez is on his way up, as he was pulled from yesterday's game? Of course, he could have just gotten injured. Why would they want another infielder though?
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 12:50 PM) I didn't want to put him on this list because his mehness just started this year and I'm not sure if it's a trend yet. Having the Tigers stuck with 23 million for the next 5 years or whatever of a mediocre player wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, though. It's for the next 7 years

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) But they could move Swisher to 1st and have Rios play RF where Swisher is currently... This season, Nick Swisher has played 18 games in RF, 70 at 1B, and 17 at DH.
