Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox
witesoxfan replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 05:56 PM) Exactly, which is why I keep saying that getting rid of Danks will put the sox in a whole to have 7 starters in 2015. However, the point remains that he was taking a shot at the Sox WS title. I still think you are reading way too far into that. I think he's merely talking about how fortunate and lucky the 2005 Sox were to only have to use 5 starting pitchers. It's the exception to the rule. Do you disagree? -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 04:23 PM) I understand the WAR thing...I'm not sure people use it correctly on this site all the time, but I get it. But do you think that having 2-3 very good young position players added to our mix would be a net positive, even if Chris continues down his current path of awesomeness? I suggested Bogaerts, Bradley, Cecchini, Webster, and Ranaudo. Best case scenario, you get 3 regulars and 2 mid to top of the rotation starters. Your expected scenario is a league average shortstop, outfielder, and utility infielder as well as two live arms who you treat no differently than Andre Rienzo. I have posted this a couple times during the deadline. It's worth posting again, even if it did or did not happen. The Mariners reportedly turned down a package to trade Felix to Boston in 2009. They would have gotten... RHP Clay Buchholz RHP Daniel Bard RHP Justin Masterson LHP Nick Hagadone RHP Michael Bowden LHP Felix Doubront OF Josh Reddick SS Yamaico Navarro And if you look, all of those guys were good to great prospects. Most have them have had big impacts in the majors. As of this moment, would you go back and make that trade for Felix? Personally, I would not.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 06:32 AM) I still get a kick out of the fact that fans outside of Chicago won't pony up $100 a year for MLB.TV. I mean, guys, it's 2013 not 1993. Saved myself $100 this year by not doing so. I will say that, because of this thread, I had something to watch while I was at the gym last night. Fun game. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) I know I have mentioned this a few times, and I don't mean to harp on it...but that is exactly what we need. You're not going to get full value for Q or Santiago...Q doesn't have the stuff factor and Code Red is still a work in progress. They are worth more to the White Sox than in trade. Sale, on the other hand, I believe is worth more in trade. We have a lot of SP right now. Sale is a luxury, and a luxury we don't have any business having given the state of the offense and the position players in general. If Boston offered you Bogaerts and Bradley, along with a few of their other young pieces, would you consider that? Edit: I suppose I'd want some quality "other young pieces," but the biggest two pieces would be the aforementioned. To move Sale, I am asking for Bogaerts, Bradley, Ranaudo, Webster, and Cecchini. Even then, I'm taking my sweet ass time making the deal.

I know we all thought they were going to roll with Erik Johnson after Peavy was dealt, but I think that's a 2014 thing. And I do think you're right in that they are going to try and trade a starter. You don't deal Sale. So, you either deal one of Quintana or Santiago, you essentially give away Danks or trade him for another bad contract, or you package Rienzo in a deal. Personally, I feel that dealing Danks for another bad contract is a better option, but ultimately it's going to be what the offers are. The names that come immediately to mind are LA boys Ethier and Hamilton (and in Hamilton's case, the Angels picking up quite a bit of the difference). It really could be anyone though, specifically with a preference towards the left side. Frankly, if the Cubs have soured on him, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox inquire about Starlin Castro either, though I don't see the Cubs moving him without a substantial offer, which is something the Sox wouldn't be inclined to do.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 03:29 PM) You are a either a fair weather fan, or a 100%! solid fan trying your best to keep from crying Just accept the season for what it is and you will feel better. Nothing better than a win or two to get you into a better mood and then it's the end of the season and we can plan for 2014. Look at this way: at the end of the baseball season there is one winner and 29 losers so we aren't alone Nope, I've pretty much accepted this team for what it is. I'm perfectly content with them winning or losing because they're almost certain to end up with a top 5 pick, which, at this point, is all that really matters anymore. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 03:21 PM) When is the last time after Rose's rookie year that he was shut down by a point guard? I can't think of a single time, all "he shut himself down last year" jokes aside. Well he didn't shut himself down last year either. God did.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) I'm still waiting for Skywind to come out before getting Skyrim for PC. It's a mod that puts Morrowind in Skyrim engine and world (they're apparently using the Elder Scrolls to allow the Dragonborn relive the Nerevarine's life, so you can have both games up). Unlike most giant mods, they just have to upscale the textures, skins, and models so while still time consuming, it's reasonable. The videos released so far look really good. They're also adding full voice acting to all the characters. Did the same for Oblivion (put Morrowind in Oblivion), so there is a precedent. They're then going to do Skyblivion, which is self-explanatory. Just can't wait to play those two games in Skyrim's engine. Especially Morrowind. Just going through different runs and exploring the world, I have probably put in about 500 hours into Morrowind, and that's on XBox. I remember jumping into Oblivion for the first time and wondering where the hell the Stilt Striders were. Oh, and those f***ing cliff racers. Worse than Zubats

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 03:15 PM) I suspect the Sox will go after cheap veterans to fill holes that don't have top prospects to fill them. They will then monitor the fringe guys like Wilkins and hope to get some value for the value guys (such as what the Cubs did with Feldman). I have no problem with that, so long as they actually make those deals. Really, there's absolutely no reason that Lindstrom is on the team right now. Not even being able to find an organizational guy that they might be able to do something with is a bit of a failure in my mind.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) I tend to carry the belief that I am a true fan and I can tell you 100% that the White Sox suck ass right now. I believe in Rick Hahn and have faith in what he is doing, and while it is yet to be seen if that is misguided, that's what I'm doing. In the mean time, I am not going to get excited about watching a baseball team that is 28 games under .500. I'll probably tune in for a bit, but this team bores me. So, if by believing I have something better to do than to watch a bad team play bad baseball against a overpriced paper tiger with the most hated player in the game right makes me a "fake" or "bandwagon" fan, than so be it. I'm obviously still following the team and know enough about them to be able to comment on them, but I do not feel that watching Team Suck versus Team Spend is an efficient or productive use of my time. I will add that I have no problem that people do want to watch them. This is still our favorite team and we want to see them do well at the end of the day, and watching them and seeing progress happen before our eyes is always a nice thing, and there are some pieces in place that will be on the next winning team (which seems to have become the catchphrase around here), and one of the all time great franchise players is in his twlight years, if not year. There are reasons to tune in. Still, it's a bit of a task to get excited about this bunch. Sale is good at least. -

I think it will be a transitional year, but I don't think it's to the point where they will want to give Andy Wilkins a shot at significant playing time at 1B. I think he could certainly get a call up and play quite a bit, but as a starter? I don't think that's ever going to happen. I think they are talking about moving Viciedo to 1B to get guys like Garcia, Jacobs, Thompson, and any other young outfielders they have up and playing.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) I've been thinking about playing Oblivion. I'm worried that is will be a big step back from playing Skyrim. It is a huge step back, which is the unfortunate thing because the stories are so good. Perhaps it's the nostalgic factor, but there were really no story lines that really, really drew me in during Skyrim like they did in Oblivion (I haven't done Dawnguard yet, though I'm not expecting it to either). I don't know why, because the stories aren't bad, they just weren't as gravitating to me as they were in Oblivion. The only thing that really drew me in was the idea of going to Solstheim, and that had more to do with the ESIII: Morrowind factor than anything else. Anyways, I tried playing shortly after playing Skyrim and couldn't get into it because the game play is frankly inferior. I had to take an extensive break - like 3 months or so - to be able to play Oblivion otherwise. If you can just gut it out for a couple hours each time, you tend to forget.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 02:23 PM) That's what I thought. They also test for synthetic testosterone. Pretty sure the NFL only does urine tests, which only catches people who are sloppy, and the NBA's is a total joke. And a ton of guys STILL get caught in the NFL

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 01:15 PM) I'm ready for another Fallout game. I am too I've been playing Oblivion lately and, nevermind how I never realized how ass backwards the leveling system truly is, the story is still so good. Just got the add-ons for the first time too and while some of those are goofy and ridiculous ("I inherited Vile Lair, which just so happens to be a house of Sithis. Oh, I also happened to inherit Frostcrag Spire, which is like the coolest mage building of all time. Oh, and if I go kill a couple maurauders and a few skeletons, I can get my very own castle AND pirate ship too!), they are also very cool too. Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine are really fun too.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 12:09 PM) In a cruel twist of irony, their playoff chances will be dashed by losing several games to the last place White Sox. The horror!

There are several guys you can compare Wilkins to. I think the most optimistic comparison you can probably make is, like, Aubrey Huff. I likened him to Ross Gload. He's most likely to make a career going from bench to bench. He's also going to have to show some competency in the OF and/or 3B to make it and stick in the majors too.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 11:27 AM) Come on folks get excited about Sox baseball. Watch tonite on WGN. I see Sale is throwing. I want to see A-Rod and Cano K many times Dude, they're 28 games under .500 -
10 games ago, the Royals were 48-51, 7.5 games back of the Tigers, 5 games back of the Indians, and considering the idea of selling a few pieces. 10 games later, the Royals are 57-52...7.5 games back of the Tigers...4 games back of the Indians...wondering when they can catch a goddamn break. I have no idea what it is about the Central, but it seems the past 2-3 years or so, these guys just play exactly as well as their direct competitors are playing and it has literally nothing to do with the teams they play.
-
I do agree that there is literally no reason to bring Konerko back. At this stage of the game, the reason to bring in guys are because you believe they will bring future value to the franchise. Signing Konerko simply doesn't do that at this point.
-
QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 09:55 AM) He can't play anymore. He's a DH who can't hit. All of the scouts around MLB are aware of this. If someone would have wanted him around as even a bat off the bench, we would have given him away at the deadline. Obviously he's still here. All this "can't hit crap" and he still has a .989 OPS against lefties. He's a platoon player at this point, but he can still hit [lefties]. Also, the Sox could have tried to give away Konerko, but he could have just shut it down due to his 10/5 no trade clause. More likely is that the Sox approached Konerko about playing for a contender as a role player down the stretch and he stated he wanted to just finish the year in Chicago. You do this with players who have spent 15 years in your organization and have the 2nd most home runs in franchise history because this isn't a video game and the White Sox are a classy organization.
-
The Blue Jays, above any other team, knew the inherent risks in signing a guy who's value is entirely batting average dependent. Melky Cabrera isn't doing anything he hasn't done in past years except hit a couple more jacks and get a few infield hits. His walk rate and strike out rate are both perfectly normal and he's actually hitting more line drives this year - 22.1%, the highest rate of his career. Nelson Cruz should still get a perfectly fine contract, and I wouldn't be opposed to the Sox signing him
-
If it's not his shoulder or elbow, it's a mechanical flaw and a big one at that.
-
I think we can make a safe assumption that taller people will have longer arms and greater reach. I don't know whether the difference would be significant, but I think suggesting otherwise is silly. Take basketball for instance - a guy that's 6'8 is going to have an easier time dunking than a guy who is 6'4. It doesn't mean a guy who is 6'4 can't dunk.
