"off the field" issues blamed for Ramirez's high error

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 03:20 PM) It said he had an unexpected death in the family. So give him a break. Rumors swirled in 2011 that one of Dunn's children was dealing with some extremely severe health issues, yet you persistently rail on him all the same. Perhaps you should look in a mirror. -
QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) Well baseball is quite the confusing sport! remember? Yes, there are certain parts of all of it that are absolutely confusing, I do remember. Frankly, that's why I enjoy the game. I do hope you keep reminding me so I am not to be confused by it in the future. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 03:13 PM) I'm just trying to say he still has value to a contender. It's not like he's so old he's playing like Carlton Fisk did in his final days. I agree he has value as a platoon partner. He does not hit righties any more. He can still murder lefties. No one is going to claim him though, especially when I'm pretty sure anybody that claims him owes him $1 mill per year from 2014 through 2020.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 11:54 AM) I remember recently when the great hope of the White Sox, Avisail Garcia, briefly resided in the banner. It's funny, people always talk about guys from the 2010 draft. They're all "Ohh Bryce Harper this" and "Manny Machado that" and "Matt Harvey takes dumps on girls chests and strikes out 12 more" and "Jameson Taillon is like fresh bacon because he's sizzling and also he smells amazing." You don't hear people say "Chris Sale has a beard that reminds me of climbing Mount Olympus and playing poker with Zeus." Why? He's been the best player in that draft and he continues to improve. Also, Addison Reed has the look of a young man who makes panties drip wet. I can pretty much guarantee that if Garcia proves he's capable, he'll be back up there eventually. They'll be like "When I think of Avisail Garcia, I think of a knight in shining armor approaching on a black steed delivering a telegram for the queen while fighting off dragons and giants mosquitos."

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) You can make an argument that DEATH should have made the second list before both Jared Mitchell and Keenyn Walker, at least. Yeah. Jacobs, Dunn, Webb, and Phegley are all guys you can argue being excited about to some degree. Mitchell? He's just not an exciting player any more.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) I think we can agree that winning is nicer than losing I think sunshine is nicer than snow, but right now, winning and losing may as well be interchangeable because the temperature is 30 below.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) Grumble, grumble. Yes, every homer Mickey Mantle ever hit was 600 feet. He'd steal upwards of 200 bases if only that f***er God hadn't taken his legs. He'd hit 4 homers in a game after drinking all night. Mickey Mantle was a REAL MAN. This 22-year old putting up insane numbers is no real MAN like Mickey Mantle. /cue Imagine if Mantle weren't an ALCOHOLIC how much GOODER he would have been! /cut nailed it...wait, I used the word "gooder?" fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 02:22 PM) Mantle had BLAZING speed (before the catastrophic injuries) and 550 foot home run power...Trout rarely hits homers like that...and Mantle also had a gracefulness about his game whereas Trout's more just brute force and dynamic energy. Would never put Trout out there as a comp. Hit tracker/ESPN has this thing called the "Golden Sledgehammer," which is the longest average distance of home runs for players with at least 13 homers (meaning guys who continually hit the ball a mile). Mike Trout is 4th this year - 21 homers with an average of 415.6 feet. Last year he was 16th with an average distance of 409 feet. Mike Trout has ridiculous power too. I mean, look at where this ends up. Oh, and if you don't think there's anything graceful about Trout's game, then I think you've probably been watching Mark Trumbo. I really don't think Mickey Mantle is that ridiculous of a comparison.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) Who are the TOP 3 MOST EXCITING MODS (and how do they compare to Yasiel Puig, and their positions on diplomacy in East Java vis a vis indigenous tribesman and rice and sugar cane farmers Well, I have beaten Yasiel Puig in arm wrestling on many occasions, so I think we know these answers

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 06:43 PM) As much as I would like to say no chance of PK leaving I have to remember this team let the Big Hurt go and he had three pretty good seasons afterwards And the reason they let him go was for the superior player in Thome. Frank was my favorite, but letting him go at that point in his career was the right decision. He ended 2004 on the disabled list with a broken foot/ankle, he only played a month in 2005 because of the same injury, and there were concerns and questions as to whether or not he'd ever play again. Guys that weigh about 300 pounds with ankle and foot problems don't typically see those problems vanish over night. EDIT: Now that I went on that tangent, the reason you would let Konerko go (in the offseason) is because he's not very good anymore and because the team needs to rebuild. It'll be a sad day as that's the last member of the 2005 Sox on the active roster, but you can't keep him on the roster in perpetuity simply due to that piece of trivia.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 01:21 AM) He had another good scoop tonight. I'd be surprised if he went unclaimed. How could a contender turn down a veteran like Paul who knows all about winning? Like you said he can still attack lefties and his pride/adrenaline just might get 20 more feet on those fly balls that might start clearing the fence again.. Either you seriously don't understand player value and the economics of baseball, or you are baiting the hook. Or perhaps both.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 04:36 PM) Something changing is a possibility. Maybe he decided the chances of coming back or being wanted by the Sox are slim for next year and would like a chance to go out a champion. Or maybe he's such a dedicated Sox player that he realizes his value to the team is so low that he's doing the Sox a favor by being off the team and saving them $3.25M in the case he is claimed. I would put the odds of him being claimed at 10,000:1. This is what they did with Thome when he went to the Dodgers. If he so decides, the Sox will eat his salary and ship him to a competitor. I don't foresee that happening, but it's certainly possible. As I've pointed out about 14 times on here, he still kills lefties.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 03:09 PM) The issue he is while he find enough at-bats in his upper 30s to reach 600? The DH-only slugger isn't as prevalent in today's baseball. Teams value defense more and like to move guys in and out of the DH spot to use as rest days. Even if he stays productive, he may not see as many ABs in the future. As long as he's putting up an .800+ OPS against RHP, he's going to have at least a part time job.

Honestly, I think Felix Pie had a worse year in 2011 than Adam Dunn did. Lower OBP, SLG was .003 higher, and did a ton of damage in the field. Dunn had a -3.0 WAR that year while Pie was at -2.2, and Dunn had 321 more plate appearances.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) Nobody is saying that Paulie doesn't deserve tons of credit for what he's done for the Sox nor that Dunn doesn't deserve to be bashed for how terrible he was, but this discussion is about the future and suggesting that Paulie will get a two-year offer for $6M a year or whatever and at the same time saying nobody would take Dunn at $14M is ludicrous. Nobody besides you is going to base their 2014 offers on how good or bad they made you feel back in 2011. While this is true in baseball, I would still do the random sloot I met in the hotel based on she made me feel back then too.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) While this may go down as one of the worst White Sox seasons in recent memory, I feel like it's one of the better baseball seasons in a while. There are some teams playing great ball right now and not a clear head-and-shoulders-above-the-rest favorite among them. Dodgers, Braves, Rangers, Tigers, even the A's and now possibly the Royals getting hot at the right time...shaping up to be an intriguing finish and hopefully a great October. There really are a lot of good races going on in the AL.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) A lot of the things I say on here come true. But only Dick Allen has pointed that out on occasion for me. As far as Dunn and Rios. Yes they are my whipping boys for this pathetic baseball team. And yes, Paulie's dropoff has hurt the team just as much. I guess I give Paulie more wiggle room because he had 4-5 really good years in a row. Dunn pretty much was the worst player in the history of mankind for a long long time in Sox uniform. What's the lowest he got that one year, .145, .150? At one point this year, Paul Konerko had a .000/.000/.000/.000 line, which is pretty much as bad as you can get.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 12:22 PM) Everyone's saying Trout has a huge advantage over Puig because he's a natural CFer....well, Cespedes in CF and LF giving you production (and this year has been a down one compared to expectations, just like with Viciedo) is a lot more important than a 1B with only two tools. I don't see the argument that he's worth 50-75-100% more than Cespedes, honestly. You simply can't compare Cespedes to Abreu. When Cesepedes was a FA, you could spend an unlimited amount on amateur players with no ramifications. You simply cannot do that anymore, so the market and money will be skewed towards international unrestricted free agents. Under the old rules, Abreu would probably get closer to the $42 mill or so Puig got. Now he's probably going to get $50-60 mill.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 09:45 AM) At least the Yankees were smart enough to front-load his contract, unlike the Angels with Prince Albert. Hahahahahaha Prince Albert

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 08:29 AM) Some guy named Tommy Manzella has been signed and assigned to Birmingham. I guess you can never have enough light-hitting middle infielders. Yes, slick fielding shortstop, absolutely no bat. He was the Astros starting shortstop a few years back when they didn't have any shortstops

QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 10:54 PM) Me and Jake are disagreeing?? WHAAA?? Howard got 5/125 in is prime. That's nowhere near 7/80, thought that 7 year number is just speculation from what Puig got. It'd have to be 4/80 to be even close to the contract Howard got. If it's 7/80 that's 11M a year on average, even at 6/80 they're looking at 13M on average. If Stone is right when he said that scouts think he could be an All Star right away then that's not that big of a number. The Howard extension was pretty much universally criticized and called the worst extension of all time at the time it happened. Howard may have been a $15-17 million player, and that was coming off fantastic seasons. Let's call a spade a spade here - at his best nowadays, Ryan Howard is about a .250/.340/.460/.800 30 HR, poor defense, high strikeout player anymore.
