  1. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 02:05 PM) Thanks! I heard Dave Cameron say once that when we criticize stats, we aren't criticizing the thought or intent behind them, just the way they measure it. We're all asking good questions, the hard part is finding the right way to answer those questions. Even RBI comes from a good idea -- who is the best run producer? It just is a very flawed way to measure run production if you want to ascertain true talent and likely performance going forward. So there's no reason to disrespect someone that wants to know about who the best run producers are -- I want to know that too! We're all on the same team here, lol This is all good and dandy, but the pressing question: is there any correlation between facial hair and effectiveness as a middle reliever?
  2. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) If the Red Sox are looking at both Peavy and Rios, if they want both, we are guaranteed 1 or 2 of Bogarts, Bradley Jr and Webster without a doubt. Bogaerts just isn't going to happen, and I think they'll be looking at Bradley Jr in CF next year if/when they lose Ellsbury
  3. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 02:05 PM) Nick Cafardo ‏@nickcafardo 29m The Red Sox have scouted both Alex Rios and Michael Young in the past week. Will be watching Jake Peavy closely in his next couple of starts I'm wondering how many more times and in how many more threads we can repost this tweet. I'm all for spamming the board on this one just because
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) At this point, I would almost be surprised if Owings isn't on the White Sox come August 1st. I get that feeling too.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) I watched Ben Wallace makes 13 threes in a row before a Bulls game several years ago...I no longer believe anything I see unless it happens in a game situation. You think about it, all these guys do is play basketball and they've almost certainly been playing since they were 8 or 10 (if not younger). They can shoot and hit wide open shots pretty much at will. It'd be like normal people shooting a basketball through a hoola hoop.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) There seems to be new ways of thinking with throwing too. It's either the Orioles or D-Backs who are incorporating long distance throws into their pitchers' workout regimens. While they realize a pitcher can throw too much, I think they are starting to realize that babying a pitcher's arm isn't always the best approach either. I think all teams do some sort of long toss regimen. It's one of the best ways to increase velocity. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 01:30 PM) We will never see a team go to the 4 man rotation again for a season. We see teams try it now and then, but I agree that nobody will ever stick with it. I think we're closer to a 6 man rotation than we are a 4 man.
  7. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 12:06 PM) If you aren't pitching you can't be the best pitcher. Sure you can. Would you rather have Phil Humber or Jake Peavy right now? I know I'm going to take Peavy because he's a better pitcher, regardless of injury.
  8. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 12:22 PM) Often they are. But they aren't routinely pitched 115 innings plus like Ventura pitches our pitchers. Pitching their arm off isn't how they became aces. Justin Verlander has thrown 110 pitches in 14 of 20 games this year and has only 1 game with fewer than 91 pitches; last year, he threw 114 pitches or more in 20 of his 33 starts, and failed to throw 100 pitches only once. If you'd really like, I could probably continue to do this with Felix, Sabathia, Wainwright, Holland, whoever. And then I can do it with Strasburg too, who the Nationals handle with kid gloves, who's already had Tommy John, who still has injury concerns, who will never develop the arm strength necessary to be anything more than a 7 inning weapon at most.
  9. Bruce needs to use his words then. I didn't know we were talking about healthiest pitcher or currently active pitcher or most readily available pitcher. I thought we were talking about the best pitcher. This is like saying that after Nate Schierholtz, Alex Rios is the best RF on the market.
  10. Before Garza goes, Peavy is the best pitcher on the market. Levine is high on drugs.
  11. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 11:42 AM) A SS with an 11:2 K:BB ratio scares me in this system. Too much swing in miss as an organization now. His improved his contact quite a bit this year (from 23.3% to 17.8% in his K-rate). He just hasn't walked a lot, but that's nothing the White Sox are unfamiliar with. If he can hit, bring him on.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 11:42 AM) Kershaw also doesn't have health concerns. Being a pitcher, there's always a health concern.
  13. Love the chubby kid in the back with the "You only got video game" shirt That pic is just full of win
  14. Seriously, 7 innings of 2 hit shutout ball with 10 K's would be awesome.
  15. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) Ummm...2005 White Sox? Yay, you win the prize
  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 09:43 AM) The last 6 World Series champions have all had at least one $100 million contract. TRIVIA: Who was the last team to win a World Series without someone on the team making an 8 digit figure?
  17. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 10:12 PM) Cubs are waiting out because they want more. Gonna be interesting. I really think Garza is traded late tonight or tomorrow Because waiting worked so well with Ryan Dempster last year.
  18. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 11:59 PM) Good job you found a quote from radio host in New Zealand who agrees with your stance on "ill advised contracts". This obviously stems from your comments on Dunn and Danks. Ben Maller is a pretty good authority on baseball, don't let the New Zealand thing fool you. Related: here's the opening paragraph of his Wiki entry right now
  19. Seriously, that's awful. Do it based on net revenue or wins and losses or something else. Market size is garbage.
  20. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 03:45 PM) I wonder how well he would do if he was sandwiched between Fielder and Cabrera? Sometimes other guys in a lineup around you can make a difference. Having paid no attention to the Tigers, I'm guessing they've played Martinez at catcher a little bit, but he's their primary DH. There's no room for Dunn in MoTown.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:56 PM) (The sad thing is Thome would have been the perfect part time DH to pair with Andruw Jones that season since Jones did nothing other than murder lefties). Except in the beginning of April when he hit like 8 or 9 homers and Kotsay was struggling. Then Ozzie ran Jones out there full time and Jones eventually tweaked something and was virtually ineffective for the month of May (as I recall).
  22. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) I agree. My other issue is with the concept of "replacement player". As if any scrub off the street would put up a 0 WAR. If I'm to believe the Sox system is as bad as they say, I bet most of those guys would contribute negative WAR as well. A team full of replacement players would be expected to win about 42 out of 162 games. Say you're offensive lineup was C - Hector Gimenez 1B - Travis Ishikawa 2B - Tyler Kuhn SS - Pedro Ciricao 3B - Brent Morel LF - Brent Lillibridge CF - Jerry Owens RF - Jordan Danks DH - Jack Cust you wouldn't expect that team to win more than 42 games. Think of those sort of players are your replacement player base line. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) Any stat that says Adam Dunn is a good hitter has to be questioned. If he's a good hitter, why aren't teams lining up to acquire him? I'd be shocked if he doesn't just retire after the current contract expires or play for pennies. I want people on the record on this topic. Does anybody else think Adam Dunn is a "good hitter?" I say NO. Well that is a subjective question. What do you mean by a "good hitter?" Someone who shows good bat control, can fight pitches off, wear pitchers out, and hit for a good average? No, he's not. Is he going to produce more runs than the average MLB hitter, hence being a"good hitter?" Yes he is.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) Who are we talking about here? Viciedo
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:45 PM) Years ago, the Sox would have been accused of simply choking. I think it's all subjective. Last year's team was in the hunt all year, then boom. Loss after loss the final few weeks and season ova. They choked, but considering we had no expectations going into the year and that they really had been put through the ringer all year, it's safe to say they were worn out. You could see it watching the games. Choking and being fatigured are not mutually exclusive.
  25. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) This statement is somewhat contradicting. It kind of runs into itself a little, but it's possible that Thome could have gotten hurt or been mediocre or whoever/whatever and the Twins could have ended up signing or trading for someone else. That much is impossible to know. Because he signed with the Twins, the Sox stuck with Kotsay and the Twins won by 4 games. Many of the games between the two of them saw Jim Thome as the main difference between them, especially his walk-off homer against Thornton which sucked big time.
