  1. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) If you got consistent duds from USC or Michigan, you probably wouldn't. Have times changed? Beane was there then and is there now. Roids were around then and around now. What has really changed? But like I said, most of that was our stupidity. We seem to make stupid decisions when we deal with Oakland. Pass. You are making pretty weak corollaries here. The Sox completely destroyed the Phillies in the Thome and Garcia trades, and that didn't stop them from making a deal for Iguchi, nor did it stop the Phillies from checking in on De Aza. There have been multiple deals with the DBacks over the years, and while the DBacks have probably come out slightly ahead, there has pretty much been a clear winner in every move, alternating between the two. At the end of the day, it's a matter of thoroughly scouting those player you are interested in and coming up with fair value. If Hahn thinks he's getting the best deal from Oakland, then that's the move he's going to make, no matter what Billy Koch is doing now a days.
  2. Should be noted that the only party to attempt to buy the evidence that MLB purchased from Biogenesis was ARod. Braun has never truly denied using PEDs, he just appealed the initial suspension and won.
  3. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 02:40 PM) I don't get it, so are you saying the Chet Lemon trade of '75 shouldn't factor into Rick Hahn's decision making? Well, let me put it this way... no
  4. Well this is f***ing bulls***. Typical east coast media bias
  5. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 02:24 PM) Nix on trading with Oakland. Durham, Foulke, Swisher....all ugly. Although those trades were probably generally our stupidity, still, no. I don't trust that organization. This is like saying you don't draft Michigan wide receivers or USC quarterbacks or you don't trade for Yankees prospects. #1) The last of those trades happened 5 years ago. Durham and Foulke both occurred 10+ years ago. Times have changed. #2) The Sox got Neal Cotts. He was only good for 1 year, but he helped win a World Series. That's all I need
  6. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) Addison Russell is a damn fine prospect despite his slow start. Big fan of Sonny Gray. Kind of tepid on Choice. Athletics are an interesting match but not my first choice. I have not seen any reports as to why he's never gotten a chance, but I've always liked Michael Taylor, even considering he's 27 years old.
  7. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 10:46 AM) Just think, if he does that like 20 more times in the next month, he might be able to hang with Courtney Hawkins. It's not call the Windy City for nothing, amirite?
  8. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) Are there any broadcasters out there with the kind of personality that would make them a valid successor to the Hawk? With Caray and Hawk in our recent past, it wouldn't be right to just have some numb nuts like Len Kasper in the booth GUS JOHNSON
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) I had posted this elsewhere, but every review of Gordon's shortstop defense from college all the way through the minors said he had everything you need to be a shortstop -- plenty of range, plenty of arm, athleticism, etc. Their only question was his hands and I think we can see at 2B that he actually has exceptional hands Except that those reports are outdated. I agree that I'd like to see him given a shot, but I really think he is stretched to the limit at 2B. Here are his fielding metrics career wise at 2B DpR- 5.5 RngR- -4 ErrR- 1.3 And here are the fan ratings from last year (using one year sample size given the idea that players will improve and fans can see this, which is flawed but this is going to support him the most anyways) Instincts - 76 First step - 68 Speed - 59 Hands - 77 Release - 77 Arm Strength - 61 Accuracy - 77 OVERALL - 71 Compare that to Ramirez, who consistently shows good RngR's (a range (PUN) of 4.1-7.4) and that is backed by fan's ratings of him Instincts - 77 First step - 79 Speed - 66 Hands - 70 Release - 72 Arm Strength - 77 Accuracy - 68 OVERALL - 73 (fan rankings are from 2012) As I've said, I'd like to see Beckham at SS the rest of the way, but I think 2B is going to ultimately be his best position. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) Heyman is reporting that the Sox did NOT turn down this trade. Apparently Martinez was not offered. Heyman's source said the Sox did not turn down the trade. This is one of the great misinformation times of the year.
  10. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 09:44 AM) So the Cubs were able to trade Garza, and the Soriano to NY trade is gaining a lot of steam. We have similar trade pieces in Peavy and Rios, and whether those two are better trade assets than Garza and Soriano is debatable. Yet we aren't even close to be in serious discussions in any trade talks with Peavy and Rios. From the several sources around, it seems the Sox are asking for a little too much in return. Yet the Garza haul for the Cubs is pretty much what we can dream of, and they still got it done. Part of me thinks the Sox are just reluctant to trade those pieces, and are still toying with the retool vs rebuild idea. We will be able see who's really in charge after the trade deadline, and it probably won't be Hahn. I would be really disappointed if we end up not making any majors moves at the deadline. There is no way we can be productive in the long term without trading away these pieces to replenish our farm, and none of the guys on our offense currently are players you can build an offense around. You don't know this, and the Sox organization as a whole has always run a tighter and quieter ship. It's pure speculation on my part, but I think the Sox are closer on a lot of deals than people realize. They still have more than a full week to finalize deals.
  11. QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 09:45 AM) Have you seen the list of 2014 SS free agents?! You don't want to go into the offseason trying to get one of these castoffs. Or the sox would have to trade one of their current SP's for a SS. The sox would be far better served keeping Alexei than hoping to find a SS to replace him. You don't have to sign a shortstop. I would be OK with trading Quintana or Santiago for a great shortstop prospect, and that is one of only areas I'm ok with dealing either one of those two.
  12. QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 09:13 AM) Bucket.. If had to guess will peavy make his start for us tomorrow The guess is going to be yes. Honestly, we need to stop pestering bucket for information. Be glad for the info that he does share with us, and let's leave it the luxury it is. He hears more than we do, but it's generally all speculation anyways. I say this with no means to offend bucket by any stretch of the imagination, and we are greatful of any info posters on the site can share with us behind the machinations of the White Sox organization. At the same time, it's still hearsay and most of the time, the deal falls through and nothing comes of it. This reminds me of my entrepreneurship class. You can think of 100 good business ideas. Of those, you may be able to make legitimate progress on 10 of them. Of those 10, you MIGHT get 1 to succeed. It's not a high probablity outcome.
  13. I could care less about finding a replacement shortstop. They have 6 and a half months to find a new shortstop. If this rumor is true, they may not feel good about his prospects of starting long term. If this rumor is false, then maybe his name came up but there was no agreement based on other information that was spilled. Now, if this is false, and Martinez's name was never brought up - and this is my personal belief - then it's possible the Sox are in the process of weeding out guys from within that are leaking info to those in the media.
  14. QUOTE (rneums33 @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 07:05 AM) Soemthing has to change with this team and soon or there will be no one in the seats. I have very little confidence in Ventura and Hahn right now. Changes should have been made earlier in the year when the team started down their path of distruction. I also have a feeling that Hahn will not make many trades. I wouldn't be surprised if Crain is the only one that is traded at the deadline. IMO I think the front office beleives this team can win next year with a few tweaks to the roster. I do not think that at all. It is time for a face lift. I am all for a total rebuild and I would support this organization if that is the route they take. I just wish they would make some decisions as to what path they are going to take. I do not think it is fair to the fans that they are not indicating which way they are going to go in the future. Baseball has changed, teams are starting to see that handing out huge contracts for many years is not working. Building through the draft and minor league system is the way to go. Look at Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Oakland. You could even throw Texas in there to a point. Thoughts? Agree or disagree? Making changes earlier in the year didn't make sense. There's nothing you gain by waving the white flag in May. I had a feeling at that point that the team wasn't going to turn it around and start winning, but if they do then you can look for ways to improve. If not, you are still taking calls and piecing together packages for guys you'll consider. There's been no problem waiting until July to make these moves. At some point very soon, the Sox will start making moves. There's literally no point in keeping Lindstrom either. They'll trade him, even if it's just for a guy. Oh, and I absolutely believe the Sox can win next year. If they make some creative moves and add some players offensively, the Sox have a pitching staff that will shut opponents down like crazy. This year feels quite similar to 2004 and especially 2007, and people wanted a full rebuild at that point. The Sox won the division the following season.
  15. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 08:32 AM) Well, my bad. Not a scout. Keith Law was a scout. It's perfectly fine
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 12:25 AM) Quite the debut for Kris Bryant: http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?g...ox&sid=milb Damn, platinum sombrero. That's impressive.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 12:26 AM) So far in July, Semien is 309/460/603 with 5 homers and an incredible BB/K ratio of 19/8 I still like Carlos Sanchez, but Semien is more than intriguing me at this point. It's hard not to be excited about him.
  18. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 06:47 PM) boy you are complicating things way too much. you are also trying way to hard to be right about something so stupid! so good for you. you win. you are the winner. baseball is a complicated game that should only be enjoyed by intellectuals! Settle down. Baseball is a relatively simple game, but there are intricacies in the game that are complicated and rival no other. That's why it's such a great game. The old cliche is that you see something new every game. A lot of that is true.
  19. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:22 PM) For Wite. I could seriously watch those two all day. Every time I see anything with them in it, I just laugh.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:27 PM) This really isn't bad any more. That amount might be slightly better but really, you don't deserve a draft pick compensation when you let a reliever walk and you don't deserve to lose a first round pick when you sign a reliever. Why not have two different tiers? Have a 1st round tender and a 3rd round tender (or 5th or 10th, whatever...has to be in the top 10 rounds so that it can count against the initial cap and teams don't just sign guys to added draft picks, as has happened in previous years). And you make the number $7.5 mill or something like that. So, rather than the White Sox offering $14 mill to Crain to try and get a supplemental 1st round pick, they can offer him $7.5 mill and get a supplemental 3rd/5th/10th round pick instead.
  21. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) Free agency is rapidly becoming less and less of a viable way to add talent thanks to the influx of early career long-term extensions, and the players the White Sox need -- big bats -- are among the riskiest and most expensive assets to buy. Note the similarity between all of these: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2013-anti-t...orst-contracts/ You acquire big bats at a young age - either via trade or development (or both, whatever) - and supplement those with free agent bats. With the vast costs tied to it, building through free agency is simply not viable any more. The Red Sox have gotten quite lucky this year, but how much of their success is still due to in-house talent? (and I am including Ortiz in that list)
  22. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 03:47 PM) Apparently so. But in my opinion there's no argument, Garza is hands down a better pitcher. And for the sake of speculation, let's say it really was a choice between Peavy (signed thru '14) and Garza (a FA in 3 months), who do you think Texas believes is the better pitcher? Jake Peavy.
  23. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) Not sure...I have my xbox glasses on today though... Peavy, Rios, Reed, and Ramirez for Bogarts, Cechhini, Raunado, Brentz and Swihart. Creamy mess
  24. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 03:39 PM) What about the fact that Garza is a much better pitcher and not so prone to breaking down? I think youa re going to see 95% of people disagree with this statement. I so happen to disagree vehemently.
