QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 03:28 PM) What is the point of having a $20M rotation? Trying to compete with the Marlins? Danks is pretty damn good and it is pretty well established that pitchers dont get all the way back until the year after they return from an arm injury. There is no need to dump payroll from this roster with what is coming off the books already and additional money coming in. Its not like the Sox are going to be a Mecca for free agents. This organization has had a real tough time attracting quality free agents over the years and that doesn't look to change as long as JR is in charge given his affinity for Scott Boras. If this team is going to improve it will need to do so through the trade market, and that means giving up quality to get quality, not dumping salary to take on spare parts. Uhh, if you can limit your spending somewhere, you can spend more elsewhere.

Either side would have to be so pissed at each other to have that relationship end. Seriously, if she has it end, she doesn't get $25k, and if he has it end, he has to pay $25k just to get rid of her.

For teams in contention, I think you will see these players really fight through the appeals system. In the case of Braun, the Brewers are f'ed this year anyways, so he can take his suspension at this point and come back next year recharged when the Brewers will hope to contend.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 12:39 PM) I think the Sox could walk away with Owings or Davidson, probably not both. A deal with one of them plus Holmberg, Trahan, and Drury would seem about right. It seems the Sox would be wise to clear one of the leftys from the rotation, and Santiago makes the most sense from a value perspective. If they can't acquire Owins AND Davidson, plus another piece, then no trade would be done. Both Santiago and Quintana are cost controlled for the next 4 seasons beyond this, and they are great pitchers, 2's or 3's, and they are still very young, unlike De Aza, who is a bit older than your normal cost controlled player. Also, there's no need to clear a lefty from the rotation. Yeah, you'd like balance, but a good pitcher is a good pitcher, regardless of what hand he happens to throw with.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) If the sox are talking with the Braves, a major league ready bat who could make sense is Joey Terdoslavich. Hes blocked at 1b by Freeman. They dont have that many other bats in the minors that seem to make sense. OF Todd Cunningham may be another. Not saying I approve of this. But if the two teams are talking, guys the sox minor league teams have seen play could be possibilities. Both players are 24 and in AAA. .288/.369/.487/.855, 16 homers .318/.359/.567/.926, 18 homers The top is Andy Wilkins. The bottom is Terdoslavich. They do not appear to be similar players - Terdoslavich being a more aggressive, stronger hitter, while Wilkins is more patient and can work a count - but I don't see enough difference in potential value to make that a worthwhile trade. I understand it's all speculation for the sake of conversation, just putting in my two cents.

I partied at the football house a couple times. The only rule was no pictures. That rule was also true of the basketball and track house too. Those were the only sports USD cared about whatsoever. -
Must have been wearing these

I didn't notice the dates on those Rodgers' tweets. If he's a man of his word, he owes $4.5 mill
-
I have absolutely no problem with that and, to some extent, would prefer that. Even when the team struggles, there's something I really enjoy about watching a young, young team go through growing pains.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 10:34 AM) Santiago makes a ton of sense for Arizona. Young, controllable, left handed and cheap. With the Diamondbacks seemingly tapped out financially, he is a guy they can slide in until Skaggs is ready, which they are trying to find out if he is now. The Giants could also make a lot of sense with Zito and Lincecum gone after the season and not having enough prospects to give up for Peavy. If the Sox are going to deal a 3-4 WAR lefty (who is, what, 25 years old?), then they need to get monstrous value in return. We are talking, at minimum, Davidson and Owings, and probably another low level prospect on top (and I've heard that Holmberg kid is good)

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 10:43 AM) The problem is our core is old and declining. You can't reasonably expect anyone on the wrong side of 30 to improve from their current performances, and you can probably expect them to get a bit worse (not saying it never happens, but you can't expect it to). Plus, which legitimate CF or youngish 3B are you going to get? I think Gillaspie was about the best case scenario there without doing something like trading veterans for prospects. Anyone established isn't going to be available. Maybe Headley, but someone would outbid us. Choo can't really play defense in CF. We could go for a reclamation project maybe. I've heard Grady Sizemore is available I don't know, being completely honest. Some veterans will be dealt off, because they're obvious guys to trade - Crain and Lindstrom being the two remaining ones. Peavy, Rios, and Ramirez very well could go, but I don't necessarily think they will. Along the same lines, to start 2008, the Sox had Alexei Ramirez and Jerry Owens splitting time in CF, Nick Swisher in LF, Juan Uribe at 2B, and Joe Crede at 3B. They ended with Griffey in CF (wtf), DeWayne Wise and Nick Swisher splitting time in LF, Juan Uribe at 3B, Alexei Ramirez at 2B, Jerry Owens gone from the organization, and some dude named Quentin who managed to hit 36 homers between April and September 6th or so. Guys become available, and GMs get aggressive, and sometimes overly aggressive. Guys do bounce back, even when they're older, but it's just not typical. I'd put it at 90% that 3 or more guys get dealt from this point forward, and probably 66.7% that 5 or more get dealt. I think you'll see the Sox do a lot of selling off, I'm just leaving open the possibility that they certainly may not.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) It shouldn't be long before something happens. At least I hope. Hahn has yet to make his 'big move' in the GM seat so who knows. Uhhhh, I think somebody is forgetting Blake Tekotte

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 10:28 AM) Lol yeah I think we all are. No, I could really care less. I don't think this team is far off, even if the record indicates otherwise. I think you go out and get a legitimate CF next year (and move De Aza to LF), deal Viciedo off in a package for a solid, youngish 3B, and you have a fairly competitive team in those two moves. And, even with this said, if they sell off 3-7 pieces, I think a change would be refreshing. More than anything else, I want the season to be over

Replace "p****" with "White Sox" and "money" with "video games" and you are far closer to reality than a fantasy for most posters on here.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) IMO college students are alot different from All American football players. If I was training all day every day for a profession, I wouldnt have touched alcohol or drugs. 99% of those kids are not training for their profession, they're playing football. -

QUOTE (elamins @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:59 AM) Gr of almost 3yrs called it off yesterday sayin she fell out of love and the connection was gone. Ouch Sorry to hear that. That hurts like a b****. Do what you need to move on, and do so quickly. I let mine stew for about 9 months and drank heavily. Probably wasn't the healthiest, but it was fun. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:34 AM) I have to point out that it's at least a little bit ironic coming from somebody who just took the first six keys on the keyboard as his screenname. My name isn't creative or anything but that's not really the point either. It's easily identifiable and relatable. That's the point of a name.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 04:32 PM) I knew that it was a mistake to mention Sizemore. Look, that just happens to be my preference for what might be an affordable solution to finding one of the two decent bats, without a long term contract. He will surely want to sign for no more than all of 2014, and hope to prove himself, so that he can sign a better long term deal. That could suit the Sox, if they are only looking for a way to compete next year. The point is; if you don't think he could help, suggest someone else. It doesn't matter who it is, as long as he can contribute, and it won't require a long term commitment. Suggest someone. Why can't it require a long-term commitment? I'd like to create Robo-Bonds and start him at age 21 and sign him to a 14 year contract, but that is out of the realm of possibility. My personal suggestion at this point is Kendrys Morales because I know he's scheduled to be a free agent, but he may not make it to that point. Thus, I have no idea. If they signed Sizemore, and it was to a minor league deal, I wouldn't be opposed, but anything more than that is too much. Penciling him into the cleanup spot is more than silly though.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) Who would be considered our #1 now? Erik Johnson is the FutureSox #1 prospect, and I think that's a pretty safe bet for any number of other publications. -
QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 03:52 PM) I'd like a better 3b prospect than either Middlebrooks or Gillaspie this deadline. Yet there are always guys each offseason who could be had that rebound. Middlebrooks isn't as bad as this years numbers. With Peavy, and a healthy Crain, the sox shouldn't accept rebound candidates. They should get guys having good years. Not many guys are .190 hitters but I also don't think he was as good as his fast start indicated last year and he's been poor against RHP. Ultimately, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up a platoon guy at 3B.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) Jeff just became a full-time starter last year. His FIP and xFIP exceed what Kerry Wood did in his prime, and their SIERAs are about even (3.40 range). SIERA Scale 2.75 = Excellent 3.25 = Great 3.75 = Above Average 3.90 = Average 4.20 = Below Average 4.50 = Poor 5.00 = Awful Take a wild guess as to where Jose Quintana resides. Somewhere between below average and poor. He's improving, though. I know, I'm just a hater. Jose Quintana - 3.61 ERA, 3.87 FIP, 4.03 xFIP; 92 FIP- (where lower numbers are good), which is 1% better than Samardzija's 93. For most pitchers, you can find some number that makes them look bad. I've laid out my case. Regarding the miles on his arm thing, a lot of people asked about the miles on his arm thing already, but I don't even care about that. Samardzija is entering his prime years physically and athletically. During this time frame, his physical and mental aptitude will gel and unite and he will never be better. Once 32 and 33 roll around, he will begin to deteriorate physically, regardless of the miles on his arm. At that point, Quintana will just be ENTERING his. Yes, I'm still taking Quintana.
