Rebuild: So Far Better Than Could Have Hoped For
witesoxfan replied to Marty34's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The moves the organization made in the offseason indicated to me that they didn't want to make any long term committments to the roster but that they were willing to spend a little bit. They had an offer worth more money on the table for Eric Chavez too, but he wanted to play on the West Coast. I think if there had been more contracts like that - 1 to 2 year contracts at reasonable prices - the Sox could have made them. I would have liked to have seen a bit more action, but it wasn't an easy offseason to make moves. -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 28, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) I think it's stupid to get specific on trades as none of us know the offers. When names start appearing I will give my opinion. You are giving your opinion that these guys should be traded, so you can also give you opinion as to what you think the White Sox should get back. It's really not stupid at all. And beyond that, what I said was "specific" is not that specific. Whether they should get outfielders or young (19-21 y/o) prospects, or more developed prospects (22-25 or whatever combination. We won't hear names until the trade is made anyways, so really, there should never be any point in speculating anything. Beyond that, we likely won't hear who the White Sox are shopping until the trade is completed (or nearly completed), so speculating on who the Sox should trade is also pointless.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 28, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) Really, it's preposterous to say well player A and player B is who I want back when no one is privy to the offers. Point is in wanting them traded is that their value will never be higher. At the very minimum, you could atleast specify positions that you would target. You can get as specific as names or saying pitchers in A ball or even suggesting you want "an outfielder and a raw pitcher for Rios, and a starter and young position player for Peavy" or whatever. What time frame is that? Is that the best package between now and the beginning of July, between now and the end of July, or sometime in the offseason? What does that imply they get? Do they take on some salary and attempt to get a better prospect or two, or do they trade off and not take on any salary? You said "the best package." That is about as generic and vague as a response can get and is a response that appears to be avoiding a question.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 28, 2013 -> 01:18 PM) I want the best deal possible in return for Peavy and Rios. Careful, you don't want to go too far out on that limb.

To be fair, I think that's probably the emergency pitcher right now if the game goes like 15 innings or something like that. Hopefully Danks shows well in about his first 4-5 starts back and the organization can feel comfortable dealing Axelrod. Like I've said, I think you can get some valuable relievers for him, which is something the bullpen sorely needs, and then you can use Erik Johnson as the 6th starter moving forward. -
Still worth posting twice. That is the awesomest picture ever

Had a minor surgical procedure, and now I can't play for ATLEAST 2 weeks. Our team is very much a recreational team, but it still blows, especially since I'm the coach and I want to show them how awesome I am at playing softball (even though I am not awesome). -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 24, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) Let's be honest, it's baseball, so losing a game out of a series like this is what we ought to expect...but yeah, you're right. This Marlins team shouldn't beat anyone. We are totally on the same page right now. Need to carry this good mojo into football season

Jesus the Marlins are f***ing terrible. Anything less than a sweep really is going to be a disappointment.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 24, 2013 -> 03:28 PM) I just have no idea what to do with myself on my days off from work. Today I watched Saved by the Bell and Boy Meets world for like 3 hours, then went to the gym for an hr. Now I'm just sitting on my couch extremely bored. BOOOOORING. Start drinking

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 24, 2013 -> 11:53 AM) That guy is so much more talented and gifted than Nate Jones. I have such a manboner for Kelvin Herrera. If they want to switch, they can have Nate Jones. Nate Jones struggles with "control," which is a very dangerous thing for a reliever to struggle with. Kelvin Herrera struggles with "trusting his stuff too much because he can throw the ball 400 miles an hour but we're in the majors and hitters can catch up to that s***," which is an incredibly easy problem to correct.

Teams will be affiliated with and share certain DLeague teams but they are also independent from anybody else. I had a friend who was drafted in the 4th(!) round by the Iowa Energy and he played with them professionally for a year. I'm sure they can trade and stuff too. The only players they can't do anything are those players that are affiliated. Hasheem Thabeet played in Bismarck for a spell when he was with the Grizzlies, but the Dakota Wizards couldn't do anything with him simply because he was under contract with the affiliated NBA team.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 24, 2013 -> 11:16 AM) Pro gun people fight the banning of guns and restrictions, not the consequences of using/having them illegally. The issue is, we never talk about consequences, we talk about bans or restrictions on legal ownership. That's backwards thinking. Put consequences on actions, if you have a gun/use a gun illegally, you pay a very VERY heavy consequence. The problem will solve itself. Banning them or restricting them hasn't worked, that much is obvious. It won't all be at the end of the chain though. People still drive drunk even though the punishments most times are extreme. You have to do some battling both before and after to start weeding it out, and while doing so you need to do whatever you can to weed out the criminals. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 24, 2013 -> 11:04 AM) That happened to a lesser extent with Chad Bradford...then puzzingly, he ended up pitching a key inning in the playoffs against SEA when nobody was expecting him to be utilized in that way. Then the trade to OAK which was dissected over and over again in Moneyball and other places... Related: Chad Bradford career fWAR - 7.5 Miguel Olivo career fWAR - 8.8 I'm thinking Williams might get criticized a little too harshly about that deal? Nevermind that Olivo was part of a trade that brought in Garcia who helped win a World Series.

People will make the contitutionality argument, but we prohibited alcohol and gave African American's 3/5ths of a vote at one time too. The Constitution can and will change as times change. Really, I have no problem with guns whatsoever, but I feel like owning and firing a gun is similar in power to owning and driving a car. You will almost always pay more for a car, but it's just as (if not more) dangerous than a gun and it takes extensive training to become skilled in the practice. Cars are more of a necessity than guns, but people can absolutely live without a car. Thus, much the same as cars, I believe people should be required to apply for a gun through the state - wherever - you should have to take a written test to have a gun "permit," and then you need to take a shooting test to have a gun "license." Every 3-5 years, people should have to go in and take a basic re-test to check for mental and physical stability to ensure that no dangerous changes have occurred. There would also be different types of licenses - rifles, shotguns, handguns, automatics, bazookas, chicken-launchers - and for each different license, you would have to test for it. Once you have a license, you are free to purchase and use any type of gun of that classification pending it's registration. Yes, it would be a pain in the ass, but that's the point - to actually get a gun legally, it is going to be a pain in the ass and you are going to have to make the economic decision as to whether it is worth it to wait and go through all that hassle to get a gun. If it is, then happy gun-owning. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 24, 2013 -> 10:42 AM) Kelly has been a HC at a higher level than Trestman. I think most believe NCAA > Canadian Football League. But I am not so sure Kelly's offense will translate amazingly to the NFL. That's a bit like believing college baseball is superior to AA baseball. I don't care if they play by different rules, you are still talking about players who are probably in about the 97th percentile with regards to their talent playing in the CFL. It logically does not make sense that NCAA teams would be better than CFL teams.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 24, 2013 -> 10:19 AM) After increased tape study, ESPN's Ron Jaworski predicts Eagles coach Chip Kelly's offense will not translate to the NFL. Jaws is perhaps the most respected game-tape watcher in pro sports, so his opinion is notable. "I just don’t see NFL passing concepts in this offense," Jaworski said. "It’s a movement offense by the quarterback, off the run-action, off the read-action. A lot of short, quick passes, dart routes, bubble screens. Very few plays down the field with NFL passing concepts." Jaws said he "hopes" he's wrong, but this was his conclusion after extensive tape study. "It’s easy to say, ‘Yeah, it worked in college,’" added Jaws. "But then I looked at a game like Stanford. Stanford, a good defensive football team, shut them down. I hope it works. I like the innovation, but I think it’s going to be very difficult." This is totally like Spurrier to the NFL. There will be some games where it works perfectly, but there will be other games where Vick/Foles/Barkley throw for 60 yards on 17 completions. I'd be extremely surprised if he makes it 3 full years. People don't even talk about the other college coach who IS going to have success in the NFL. Doug MARRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE
