QUOTE (the People's Champ @ May 2, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) The obvious solution, to get more playing time for these other guys is to trade Thome. That would free up the DH spot for Swish/PK/Crede etc. Then there would be plenty of opportunities to start Fields/Anderson/Owens or whoever. All Thome is going to offer is the HR and people are complaining that the HR is all we are living off of right now anyway. I think we have enough power in this lineup that we wouldn't miss him. The only problem is he would have to go to another AL team, and the Sox probably wouldn't want to do that, for fear that it may bite them in the ass. Thome's gotten on base at a .400+ clip during his entire tenure as a member of the Chicago White Sox and has an OPS with the Sox at right around .975 or so. He's the most consistent producer within the lineup, and trading him would cripple the Sox chances at competing this season.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ May 2, 2008 -> 04:25 PM) They have some polos and stuff, but not a basic T. I'd say get that paper that lets you iron logos and stuff onto shirts. Then find an MLB logo, reverse the image, print it out, and iron it onto a basic t-shirt.

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ May 2, 2008 -> 11:09 AM) I know we hit home runs in 2005 but let's not kid ourselves that that's what got us to the big game--we hit situationally, we won a ton of one-run games, we irritated opponents on the bases. I remember a game against KC where we didn't even SCORE a run and we won (they walked in two). PITCHING. Yeah they hit situationally, but if they didn't pitch as well as they did, they were f***ed three-times sideways before they would ever get the opportunity to be in that situation. Secondly, the only player from the 2005 team that really did anything significant on the basepaths was Podsednik. There were a few others that got into double digits, but none were really ever a true threat to steal. Smallball, with this lineup, is one of the worst ideas you could incorporate. The Sox offense has struggled the past couple games, but people really need to step away from the ledge. I honestly wouldn't be surprised in the least if this lineup scores 825-850 runs with how much power there is up and down the lineup. And I would imagine that, come around August or so, Fields could be called up and give the Sox a slightly fresh pair of legs and a huge bat off the bench for the stretch run. Finally, I jump on anyone who compares this lineup to the 2007 lineup because by doing so, you are thus comparing Nick Swisher, Carlos Quentin, Orlando Cabrera, and a healthy Joe Crede to Darin Erstad, Scott Podsednik, Andy Gonzalez, Luis Terrero, Alex Cintron, Tadahito Iguchi (a stellar .722 OPS at the time of his trade), Josh Fields, and a banged up Joe Crede. Is that fair? I understand the offense is getting older, but I didn't see many people really slow down that much last year - Dye was banged up in the first half, but when he got healthy, he set the league on fire. Thome slowed down a tad, but he was still a fantastic hitter too. Konerko was actually right around his career average, though I expect him to be in about the .875 OPS range this season. I'm not worried about this offense in the least. Just wait and let it play out until about mid-June or July before people start freaking out.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ May 2, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) Is a key injury to a pitcher going to hand the NL Central to the divisions 2nd best team for the 2nd year in a row? I hope not. I've thought that the Cubs were slightly overrated but were the best team in the Central all along. The Brewers had a shot if they stayed healthy, but when I made that disclaimer, I was speaking of Sheets and not Gallardo. The Cards have a shot, but I wouldn't count on them. Regardless of all of that, I don't think the Cubs have the pitching to make it out of the NLCS...not at this point anyways.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 2, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) where can you find that stat? http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/pspli...e02&year=00 It's generally pretty even throughout, but he is most definitely worse in his first 25 pitches with a .709 OPS opposed to the next highest of .690. I just don't think he'll be that good because I don't think his stuff is as good as it used to be. He's a shell of his former self. The fact that he can still rush it up there are even 94 is amazing seeing as how many surgeries and whatever else he's had.

QUOTE (gosox41 @ May 1, 2008 -> 10:24 PM) If the Sox continue to hit below .250 as a team, I'd bet a lot of $$$ that by the end of the year they will not be in the top half of the AL in runs scored. The Sox started off hiting so well with RISP. A .243 hitting team isn't going to hit 90 pts higher in batting average with RISP over a marathon season. I agree with all of this. I'll disagree with the notion that the Sox won't hit over .250 I'll disagree with the notion that this team can't hit freaking .250.

QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ May 2, 2008 -> 12:05 AM) In my vision Owens would probably start twice a week, and the continuity of that would be in direct correlation to the success he has with those limited AB's. The main reason behind this idea would be to get Swisher further down the order without having to make Quentin lead off, and giving Brontosaurus and Stegasaurus (who the f*** was Carl kidding?) time off as needed. I just think Owens would be more valuable to have than Alexei at this point, even with 1 or 2 starts a week, *but* I wouldn't bring him up here to exclusively be a pinch runner. Keep in mind I don't like Owens too much, I'm just looking for potential ways for OC to ground into less DP's per week. You say Owens 3 too many times in this post and Anderson/BA/Brian 3 too few times.

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ May 1, 2008 -> 08:26 PM) Logan has been struggling a bit lately. Any chance he goes down because he's only a left handed specialist and it's only 4 games? No, Logan's fine...Ozzie loves his matchups too much anyways, so I see no chance Logan would go down. The only reason this is being discussed is because Alexei Ramirez cannot re-enter the United States upon leaving the country without a major hassle involved. If anyone goes down, it will be Alexei.

Would A Change at the Top Benefit the White Sox

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 1, 2008 -> 06:38 PM) Absolutely. The question becomes do you use Fields as trade bait to acquire a 2b that can leadoff.... So, just curious, who would be the option? Because you assuredly aren't speaking of Brian Roberts. -
Hell of a pitchers' duel in Cleveland. Most would expect Sabathia-Felix or Carmona-Bedard, but no, it was of course Miguel Batista and Paul Byrd. Cleveland up 1-0 in the top of the 9th.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 1, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) And Brian Roberts is still an All-Star. If Owens slugged .400 his offensive numbers would look like Jose Reyes (.425 SLG) with a similar # of SBs and less home runs. Still unrealistic to expect of Owens. Roberts is an All-Star at 2B. If Owens were right handed and could play the infield, he'd be starting right now. He's instead an outfielder where offensive production is a much bigger concern. Reyes is about one class up on Owens right now, he plays a pretty solid shortstop, and he's gotten on base at a .354 clip the past two years. It's not a huge surprise that he's scored 120 runs the past two years either. Finally, if he can't slug, say, .375, he's not much of an asset, even if he stole 50-60 bases at an 80% clip. The OBP line is not entirely true. Walks are not included in the calculation of SLG%, so if he merely started walking more but still hit at the same .265 with a .315 slugging but is now getting on at a .350-.360 clip, he's still not going to score as many runs as a Nick Swisher will or even a leadoff hitter with a .330 OBP but a .400 SLG%. Regardless of all of that, Owens doesn't have a place on the MLB roster right now unless it's as a 4th outfielder or possibly a bat off the bench, but even I'd be afraid of using his bat late in a game. The Sox just have too many options that are better than him right now.

The difference between the two is that the ball hit to Soriano was a flyball that hung in the air a while whereas the ball hit by Braun was a line drive that he absolutely scalded. If Soriano had anything for baseball instincts on defense, he would have been under that ball; really was no excuse for him not to be there.

Would A Change at the Top Benefit the White Sox
witesoxfan replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (iamshack @ May 1, 2008 -> 04:46 PM) Well, we don't "need" Fields next year simply because he will be inexpensive. Between Danks/Floyd/Quentin/Swisher we have 4 players who will make about $6.5-7 million total in 09'. Even if you assume that Buehrle/Vaz/Contreras will still be here, along with Pauly, Thome, Dye AND Crede, AND the bullpen, there is still enough money there. All you have to do is plug in Ramirez/Uribe/Richar at one of the MI positions, and a player you could theoretically acquire for Fields via trade, and the payroll could still work as it does this year. Fields is a nice asset. But it is not absolutely necessary that he be here, especially if you deal him for a similarly-salaried player who fills a need. I'd much rather deal Richar than Fields. Average 2Bman can generally be found all over the place and it's even possible that Richar could be dealt for a 2Bman. I'd much rather include Richar in a deal for Roberts and have his contract over the next like 2 years than to have Crede locked up for 5 with no idea whether his back will hold up nor having any idea whether Richar will be a good player. Fields has already proven that he has a ton of power and if he can start to make a bit better contact, he'll become a huge threat in the middle of the order, and Roberts has proven to be a pretty consistent player over the past few years. I'd prefer that much moreso than dealing Fields. That being said, Fields is tradeable...it should be for nothing less than either a rising star or a very, very good MLB player already with a few years left on his tires. Anything else really hurts badly. -
Nice comeback.

As good as it is that the Brewers took the lead, why on earth would you send Weeks from 3rd? That's so dumb. Just let him stay on 3rd and try and get another one on a sac fly or even 2 if Fielder gets a hit. Man, that's terrible.
