  1. https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds 62.9% vs. 78.1% probability a pretty big disparity between models...but both with Sox in 7th.
  2. “It's probably the luckiest home run baseball history. It was definitely top three,” Yelich said. “I needed that one. It's been an absolute zoo. I've been awful all year, so to have some positivity and be able to smile about something was nice. Much needed.” “Was it a tough play for him? Yes. Could it have been made? Should it have been made? It’s possible,” Renteria said. “But he did everything he could to kind of corral it. That’s probably not the story of the game. The story of the game is we were probably shut down a little bit on the offensive side, which didn’t give us a whole lot moving forward.”

  6. With the source of the Cardinals outbreak largely unknown, Jerry Hairston Jr. reported that a few players went to a casino following their series against the Twins. This obviously represents a huge breach in protective measures, and is a considerable risk to the rest of the league at a time where players are supposed to be working to ensure games can be played as safely as possible. The rumor was corroborated by MLB insider Jon Heyman, which caused the Cardinals to work overtime to say there’s “no truth” to rumors their players would be foolish enough to go to a casino in the middle of a pandemic and potentially help jeopardize the entire season. Team president John Mozeliak tried to defend the possibility his players were unsafe, but did so in the weirdest way: “We understood there were going to be risks... just the inherent risk playing in the middle of a pandemic. Would it make it easier if we said, ‘Oh somebody went to a strip joint?’ ‘’ Yes, yes it would John (Mozeliak). It would make things much easier if you notified the league when learning that a player went to a strip joint. In fact, not only would it be easier, but it would be the most responsible thing to do in that case. Then the player could be quarantined, monitored, have their exposure to others limited, institute contact tracing, and ensure rapid testing. That might not sound easy, but it’s a substantially lighter lift than doing nothing, waiting for an outbreak, then trying to do damage control while everyone else’s season is at risk. https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2020/8/4/21353902/cardinals-covid-outbreak-casino-report-details just give the Cardinals automatic losses and move on...teams are going to have to learn the hard way, just like there are consequences to actions/reckless behavior in real life.
  7. This has pretty much been the same story ever since Renteria took the reigns, why should we suddenly expect a leopard to change its spots now?
  8. Why do the freakin’ Padres care more about winning? They consistently bring up players, whenever deemed ready, regardless of service time considerations. Change managers. Make wholesale changes to roster in order to improve defense (Grisham/Profar/Trammell instead of Reyes/Renfroe/Kinsler/Dozier). Constantly bringing up pitchers from minors to challenge existing starters and change bullpen mix, etc. Mackenzie Gore not up yet might be only question fans have...
  9. One ball was more on the top of the foot (slider or curve), last night the same foot...looked liked a bit more of the in-step, fwiw. Par for the course, this year. Will definitely speed up his bat for the remaining weekend match-ups.
  10. With a little more than a week to go before classes begin, the Cobb County School District is already contending with cases of COVID-19. The district said since July 1 it has been informed by Cobb & Douglas Public Health of about 100 cases involving district students or staff members, said spokeswoman Nan Kiel. The district relies on students and staff members to self-report potential COVID-19 cases. The health department confirms the disease via testing and contacts others who may have been infected. The health department asks those who test positive to self-quarantine for 10 days and “we strictly enforce their guidance,” Kiel said. ajc.com Shocking, I tell you, in that historically progressive/proactive state that doesn’t mandate mask wearing...

  16. Well, that’s one way to prevent the Cubs from winning.... Hours before they expected to return to play against the Cubs, their weekend in quarantine behind them, the Cardinals have been thrust back into uncertainty and concern with the revelation another player has tested positive for COVID-19. The Cardinals and Major League Baseball have postponed their Friday night game vs. the Cubs after learning of one new positive test on the team, according to two sources with knowledge of the result and decisions. Major League Baseball has confirmed that a player tested positive. That brings the Cardinals' total to eight players, six staff members. The Cardinals are in the process of going through additional tests Friday afternoon. They are also conducting contact tracing to determine how much exposure they have since returning to the field Wednesday afternoon, multiples sources confirm. This means retracing the steps of the individual who tested positive. This contact tracing element of the Cardinals' response is pivotal because the team reunited Wednesday morning in Milwaukee and has spent time together on a plane and at the ballpark the past few days. All players who traveled with the team would have had at least five consecutive days of negative tests. stltoday.com
  17. https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-s-top-prospects-in-2022 White Sox: Jared Kelley, RHP (No. 6) Rated the 2020 Draft's best prep pitcher entering the year, Kelley unexpectedly lasted until the second round and signed with the White Sox for $3 million as the 47th overall selection. He works with a 93-96 mph fastball and tops out at 98 with little effort in his delivery, and he also has an advanced changeup for a teenager and the confidence to throw it in any count.

  21. Uh-oh. We are the silent majority of Sox Nation.
  22. de Grom, Sonny Gray (anyone could have acquired), Lance Lynn (avail to all), Trevor Bauer (avail to all)...just have to be smart, like Reds’ and Rangers’ GM’s. That said, Mike Minor hasn’t been able to repeat 2019 success. Or hire someone from Braves, Dodgers, Indians or Brewers‘ front offices , they always maximize pitching talent. Padres, another team that has amassed huge pitching depth...Rays, etc. Can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
