QUOTE (Quin @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 04:07 PM) And because we're living in a poorly written political thriller... http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2017/12/i...court_rule.html Alabama's Secretary of State, who believes you have to earn the right to vote, got an injunction filed so that he can destroy voting records from tonight. He also went to Russia last year to observe their elections and had glowing reviews. Somehow, that is not an Onion article. Are we sure he didn’t go there with Sessions? Who funded that trip, exactly? What could possibly be gained from such a junket that would be of value to taxpayers?

https://www.yahoo.com/news/kayla-moore-anti...-034332383.html Well, the Moore family (at least his wife) does know a lawyer who is a Jew. "One of our attorneys is a Jew." (Notice she didn't say Jewish, which would have been the preferred way to express it). Glad to know they're NOT anti-Semitic!!! ALMOST starting to feel sorry for the Republican Party if he should still happen to win tomorrow night. Nate Silver gives Moore 70% odds to win Because you’ve read so much detail about the polls, I don’t want to leave you without some characterization of the race. I still think Moore is favored, although not by much; Jones’s chances are probably somewhere in the same ballpark as Trump’s were of winning the Electoral College last November (about 30 percent). The reason I say that is because in a state as red as Alabama, Jones needs two things to go right for him: He needs a lopsided turnout in his favor, and he needs pretty much all of the swing voters in Alabama (and there aren’t all that many of them) to vote for him. Neither of these are all that implausible. But if either one goes wrong for Jones, Moore will probably win narrowly (and if both go wrong, Moore could still win in a landslide). The stakes couldn’t be much higher for the candidates — or for the pollsters who surveyed the race. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-t...-alabama-polls/

Secret super PAC backing Jones in Alabama exposed A group that's spent more than $4 million on the Democrat's behalf is controlled by Washington interests, even as Jones has distanced himself from the national party. https://www.politico.com/story/2017/12/11/s...a-senate-290502 Believe it or not, the media does actually do its job.

It's also going to be interesting to see how the Sen. Shelby "about face" on Sunday (admitting he voted write-in GOP candidate instead of Moore) affects this.

After President Donald Trump attacked CNN in a Saturday tweet — claiming the network represents the US “very poorly” on the international stage — the cable news outlet shot back in a tweet of their own. “It’s not CNN’s job to represent the U.S to the world. That’s yours. Our job is to report the news. #FactsFirst,” tweeted CNN’s official public relations account. @FoxNews is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly. The outside world does not see the truth from them! Donald J. Trump

I can’t believe Alabama women/mothers are calling in to C-Span to argue that Roy Moore ONLY has two accusers because the other 7 were 16/17/18 years old and it was not officially breaking the law to be with those GIRLS (merely “icky”) at that time. Or they seduced HIM...were essentially like Eve and the snake in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Donald Trump, Jr., fighting the righteous war against the corrupt media https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-trump-tru...-231215245.html If they were really trying to get to the truth you would think they would reach out to the other side before running with it. They all have my number... they couldn’t care less about the truth. https://t.co/QDEUOgmAVx — Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) December 10, 2017 “So this week is precisely why people should trust the media??? Have you lost your mind? MSM happy getting their narrative out there and forgetting about the truth. Only did so when forced to by people with large enough platforms to call them out. Sadly, most don’t have that!” he said in a separate tweet. Amazing! Who knew Honest Abe was such a regulation buster? During a rally in Pensacola, Fla., on Dec. 8, President Trump claimed that he has cut more federal regulations than any other U.S. president including Abraham Lincoln. https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/politi...m=.1c6974889eb8

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 03:59 PM) Yeah they are and the train keeps rolling. Read somewhere that the cubs want to have Cobb signed by Monday. Would be nice if the Sox could get Nate Jones healthy. There's still some potential for a nice haul down the road. It would probably require at least one full healthy season AS A CLOSER before he regained most of his value from 2 years ago. That's a lot of strain to put on someone who has been through as many major injuries as Nate has recently.

Who is their Dotel/Linebrink combo to save the day? Cubs are in dire need of dependable RH relievers to supplement Edwards, Jr. They better hope Morrow doesn't morph into Jesse Crain.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 10:46 PM) https://theintercept.com/2017/12/09/the-u-s...-what-happened/ This is just from 2016 alone!!! If Trump succeeds in getting all those crooked media members fired, we'll have the best media west of Russia and east of China. The most "humiliating debacle in ages" happens everyday in the so-called American mainstream media, and if you send us $25.00 in the next 10 minutes, you'll not only receive a tax-exempt donation receipt, but your very own FREE autographed limited edition copy of Clinton Cash by Peter Schweizer. Number 1: Hillary will win in a landslide. The media was so sure Clinton would win in a landslide. Every poll reported that Clinton was a shoe-in. They struggled to justify their position all night, until, finally, they couldn’t believe their own bias any longer. When they announced Trump the winner I was buckled over in laughter! ... Number 10: White people ruined America. Samantha Bee from TBS blamed white people for ruining America after Trump prevailed over Hillary Clinton. You know Samantha Bee, racism goes both ways and blaming Clinton’s loss on an entire race is one of the most despicable things I’ve ever heard. Her poor ratings indicate that many agree with me! http://www.angrypatriotmovement.com/media-moments-2016/

https://www.yahoo.com/news/racial-dispute-b...-124730394.html Stories like this are ONE possible reason that Trump and the GOP will retain power. Granted, there might be some missing context, but there's just no way that a logical person can side with the Oberlin (OH) students against this private bakery (once again, from all the information provided so far). The idea that even that the school cafeteria's cooking Vietnamese spring rolls or sushi and it's considered "cultural appropriation" is just nutty. Southsider2k5 asked for more stories that show liberal excesses, this is clearly one of them. PS: Greg will love this story.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 07:27 PM) Maybin and Miller were such hot shot prospects and it took them about 8 more years to become productive major leaguers and neither in the role they were projected. These cases always make me a little nervous about the rebuild. Unless the Cubs/Astros are running the rebuilds...or you have the Dodgers/Red Sox/Yankees' ability to invest in the farm system, international youngsters and outbid pretty much everyone on the FA market when you choose to dip your toes into the water. IMO, the real test will be how long the Indians and Astros can keep their cores together. KC, it only lasted two years, but they made two World Series and almost won both. The Cubs have made 3 consecutive NL Championship Series, and might still have 3-4 more in them. At any rate, it's an extremely interesting time in baseball. Taking the "middle route" like the Mariners have been on (and the White Sox attempted for a decade) just doesn't work anymore because the margin of error is razor thin. We shall see if the White Sox/Padres approach can work this time around. It's also fascinating because the Cardinals' Way (despite doing everything the "right" way) has its limits (couldn't attract Heyward, David Price, Luis Robert, now Stanton).

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 07:53 AM) What in the hell... http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2011-01-2...iller-incidents Author argued that radical, even violent rhetoric coming from the political right is more incendiary and aggressive than that coming from the left. During the Obama years, it was even more one-sided than now. It was decidedly more violent and deadly. The current President has the bully pulpit and a 40 million plus twitter audience. Fox News and conservative talk radio spend 24 hours per day going after the left with incendiary rhetoric/conspiracy theories and don’t even pretend to care about the truth half the time. Not to mention their audience is a multiple many times greater than that of CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post and NY Times combined. It’s not even close.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 11:11 AM) http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article/263...inter-meetings/ Am I the only one who has absolutely zero recollection of this? Could you imagine how this changes ChiSox history? Also, why did KW refuse taking on the Willis contract? It wasn't much at all and DET seemed to handle it well Danks, Fields, and Gio for Miggy and Willis? (Likely mans NO SWISHER(!!!!!!!!!!!) PLUS, the Hunter pursuit? Note this also likely doesn't cancel out the Quentin-Carter swap or Garland-Cabrera swap Miller and Maybin were both huge prospects at that time, and the unwillingness to take on Willis money (they already had a lot of money sunk into the fading starting rotation) was also a pivotal factor. Detroit was willing to absorb the remaining salary, and they sent four other players. Not sure how the $29.5 million extension Dombrowski signed Willis to two weeks later factored in, but the Sox were apparently not interested in that particular commitment. Also pretty sure that particular package of all 3 players was never offered by the Sox. Looking back online, Gavin Floyd’s name was also involved.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 10:14 PM) I thought Gleyber Torres was slated for 3b, not 2b. Headley is mediocre at best and getting old. I'd imagine he will be a platoon player next year. That was before Castro was traded. And I think some here are getting Gleyber Torres and Ronald Torreyes confused. He’s more of a utility guy.

Ryan Sweeney says hello. In all fairness, the same was being said about a certain Astros OF prospect in 2016 and he really blossomed this past year. Nobody knows when or if it will happen. Avi Garcia is a perfect example. Projected/potential power vs. reality is an inexact science.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 07:48 PM) I suspect they’d be happy to take any number of our assets off our hands for Frazier. If we offered a package of say, Dunning and Burdi, I’m pretty sure that deal gets done. There are any number of combinations that get it done, tbh. The White Sox would be one of the easier organizations to complete a deal with, IMO. They already have the best pen in baseball, why do they need Burdi, who has to prove himself first coming off injury. Dunning? Not enough. Same with Fulmer. It would have to be someone closer to Lopez/Giolito/Hansen territory. They can simply dangle Gardner and/or Frazier until they get the exact pitcher they want back in return. We don’t have anyone in that 60-75 range, Cease/Dunning/Hansen (just one) feels light, the others are still pretty close to untouchable from Hahn’s perspective. Odds are, though, they’d prefer to trade Frazier, since they tend to value vets so highly.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 03:59 PM) FWIW, the 2016 and 2017 world series had the highest ratings since 09 when the Yankees were last in it. And seriously, you posted the phrase "Lots of talk that NFL owners want Silver as next commissioner" 3 days after they gave Gooddell 5 years and what, $200 million? The argument was that superteams were killing the NBA....when all indicators and metrics show the opposite, except for maybe the Atlanta Hawks. The NBA is projected by most experts to eat into the NFL fanbase, rather than poaching fans from MLB. No news in China about the NFL...it will only exist when they play the preseason game here. And I have a sneaking feeling Jeter will end up selling that team in the next 10-15 years at an extremely profitable markup and it will be relocated.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 04:55 PM) Not when one side is using more hateful, inciteful, and provocative language to create the situation that exists. Honestly it is similar or worse than how Trump's description of immigrants was portrayed, yet barely anything is said. The whole, don't let the few define the whole thing? Nope. Hateful/inciteful/provocative...how do you plan on objectively quantifying that as being worse? Worse than the anti-Muslim videos shared on twitter two weeks ago? Isn’t more to be expected from the President of the United States than a random yahoo message board poster? What do you want to be covered that isn’t being covered? Wouldn’t the news media simply be considered more divisive for doing so? Listen to C-Span someday. They take alternating calls from Democrats, Republicans and Independents on Washington Journal. A good number of the conservative callers are currently labeling c-span as fake news and arguing they’re only focused on bad news about the administration, and calling it fake news as well. So where does real news exist anymore?

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 03:11 PM) MLB is soon going to have the same issue that the NBA is now having. Three or four "super" teams...Dodgers, Yankees, Indians, Astros. A small number of very good teams...Red Sox, Cubs, Nats and all the rest mediocre at best or tanking / rebuilding with ZERO CHANCE to win anything. Not good for the fans and not good from a business standpoint when fans stop watching or going to games because there isn't any point. And I'd argue just the opposite, on a point. Miami actually has Stanton over a barrell. The guy wants to play for a winner and doesn't want to go through a rebuild. Fine. Miami should have said, 'you go to the Cards or the Giants or we'll trade everybody in the f***ing lineup and you'll be out there alone with no protection in last place. How would you like that?' I'm willing to bet he'd change his tune mighty quick. Instead Miami acted like Miami even with new ownership. The knowledgeable fans complain, but the NBA tv ratings are way up the last three years. Lots of talk that NFL owners want Silver as next commissioner. As long as the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs or Dodgers are one of the top four teams...baseball will be fine. You also might be able to add Angels with Ohtani/Trout as the fifth megafranchise.

Harper’s going to want to play somewhere that he’s clearly THE guy...just not seeing the fit there now in NYC. Would almost be like Durant to the Warriors if the Yankees win it all next year. IMO, Yankees would be better off saving remaining gunpowder for starting pitching.
