  1. Better yet, Bryant/Schwarber/Soler/Rizzo all attired in Sox jerseys. Then SoxTalk can make the national news like McNally's did last week.
  2. Most workers in America can only dream of eye and dental insurance. Luckily, as a teacher we had both, but of course now teachers' unions are also under fire for fighting for benefits for their workers so that eventually will be cut out as well. Just have a baby in China. As long as you are married, it only costs about $500-1000. Of course, you have to marry a Chinese woman. If you aren't married, the woman or couple bear all the costs...even for future pre K - 12 education, since the child doesn't exist technically and can't attend a government school. Hence, the only single moms are rich celebrities.
  3. Except everyone acknowledges Ozzie was a very effective manager (especially handling the bullpen and giving starters like Garland more rope than Manuel) in his first five or so years on the job. The biggest complaints were the Sunday line-ups and benching Anderson for Mackowiak in 2006. Maybe showing too much preference or deference to veterans vs. younger position players. In the end, he was also right to put the brakes on the Beckham and Viciedo worship.
  4. How many CEO's get to keep their jobs hen they consistently underperform on earnings per share by using the defense, "well, we were projected by numerous algorithms and models/simulations to perform much better than we actually did in reality. Just be patient and trust the process...eventually we'll get it right!"
  5. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 05:08 PM) Brian Anderson, Ryan Sweeney, Alexei, Sanchez, Saladino, Trayce. Chris Getz and Eduardo Escobar both not bad. How did they develop Ramirez? It took them half a season to even realize he might be able to stick in the infield, and he was playing mostly 2b then, and CF. Of course, Cabrera was the starter, but nobody projected him as more than a utility player. One of those fortunate situations like Quintana where we ended up with surplus value on a low-risk investment. More of the credit probably goes to Omar Vizquel than Cora/Guillen.
  6. Still think the Blue Jays are the much better team. Imagine them lining up with the Cubs in the World Series. Will set homer records, but the weather in Chicago will probably have taken a turn for the worse by then.
  7. Cecil was out due to injury, too. Rangers absolutely jinxed by poor fielding in key moments of the post-season for the entire decade... Hamels will be the tough luck loser. Dyson hadn't given up a homer since his first outing of season, 31 ip as a reliever.
  8. Not to mention Miguel Sano and the Twins (yet another impact infielder at a premium position)....they finished exactly how we were projected to by most experts.
  9. She has to testify before Congress on e-mails/Benghazi October 21st. Biden has to be waiting to see how that plays out first.
  10. QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 09:44 AM) I could come up with a lot more examples of teams who can't operate that way than you can cite teams who can. If only they all played in a national landmark, with a ready supply of tourists to help fill it even if they're bad. Cardinals are closest...St. Louis Arch, Dred Scott Courthouse, Grant's Farm, Union Station, Mississippi River. Stadiums, not so much. But Las Vegas and Florida get terrible support for baseball. Let's not forget the Arizona transplants/snowbirds for spring training as well, another Cubs' revenue source.
  11. Matheny, Ausmus and Ventura were all eventually exposed...the no prior experience needed hiring strategy should go back to the drawing board.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 09:36 AM) No. The Sox fans don't allow the team to operate that way. Fine. Let's get creative. Kickstarter or gofundme drive to acquire the next Emilio Bonifacio or Gordon Beckham. That will surely draw some attention from the front office.
  13. Sox fans take pride in emptying the stadium when the team sucks because we care more about pure baseball than babes bedecked in bedazzling bikinis blitzing back beers before Bryant bats.
  14. Because Kauffman was more like Mike Illitch than Sam Walton/David Glass. Hobbyist, money/profitability wasn't the main point. There's also lots of info supporting the fact that the number of fans attending Cubs games and White Sox fans from within a fifty mile radius is virtually identical, or at least was until 2013-2015. The other 40% of attendance for the Cubs is much more regional...the senior citizens buses or I-Cubs fans coming from Des Moines for a two or three day trip to Chicago and back. Surely, part of the reason is/was Harry Caray, WGN, the babes in the stands, a three hour beer/party/celebrity 7th inning stretch skit...with baseball as an additional bonus as well. The White Sox completely lost Iowa, most of Indiana, western Michigan, western WI/SE Minnesota. Having the AAA and Midwest teams close by helps as well. You can't argue the location of minor league teams is helpful for us. In comparison, look at the Royals, Rangers, etc. Very strategic. Before, the White Sox had South Bend at least.
  15. Are you sure not Greg Oden former OSU player?
  16. And whose fault is it the fans aren't loyal? Does Nokia blame cell phone buyers, IBM computer buyers...do K-Mart, Sears, JC Penney and Montgomery-Ward blame its customers or themselves? Did Apple blame its customers after Jobs was pushed out for a Pepsi exec and nobody wanted to buy their newest inventions? I don't believe any CEO of a major corporation in the world would blame consumers for not consuming an inferior or fatally flawed product. Did McDonalds blame Starbucks, Subway, Chipotle, In and Out, Panera, Five Guys?
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 06:07 AM) Royals = 3 decades of not winning Astros = hadn't made the playoffs in longer than the White Sox including 3 straight years of 100+ losses and literally 0 rated broadcasts, and rated one of the absolute worst franchises in sports (117 of 132 in the rankings last year, that we are 85th in this year) Cubs = Fans still showing up, allowing them to not only completely rebuild, but also to still sign top free agents But it won't be shocking at all if the Astros pass the White Sox after 2016. The White Sox will have fallen to the fourth quartile from the back end of the second in the span of just two seasons. The Royals have the best overall record in the AL the past three years and did at least lead the division until August, 2003. That particular team finished over .500 by a bit. Let's also not forget the White Sox sent 24 years from 1959 to 83. And 40 from 1919.
  18. While Harrelson would be amped, Carlos Gomez would either get injured or do a pre-steroids Sammy Sosa impersonation with the White Sox. Parra or Pearce will be cheaper...that's how we roll. Second and third tier players other than Robertson and Abreu.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 05:55 AM) And this is why the White Sox don't have nice things. Or whenever they get an opportunity to have nice things, they completely mess it up. Dunn LaRoche Shark Avi Garcia Beckham Viciedo Keppinger Bonifacio Cabrera Downs Davidson Nestor Molina Zach Duke Brian Anderson Josh Fields Joe Borchard McCulloch/Broadway/Ring/Poreda Jared Mitchell instead of Trout Kotsay/Jones instead of Thome Danks instead of Buehrle Etc.
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 05:45 AM) Lincoln - Douglas wasn't really a debate the way we think of it. It was just a series of long, prepared speeches of alternating view points. There weren't questions or back and forth interactions. I was just responding to the any moment in any election in history. Like Greg's ticket was the biggest travesty in the history of motorized vehicles...
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 12:36 AM) Please, everyone admit Bernie Sanders is one, helluva man! What he said about Clinton's email controversy was the greatest moment in any election in history! Bernie Baby, no matter what happens, you now will go down in infamy as CLASS. If Bernie beats Trump, fine! Bernie baby for President! p.s.: I just read the reviews. Clinton the slam dunk winner. LOL. The media is so predictable. My gosh the media ONLY wants a democratic president and they want Hillary badly. I don't get it sometimes. The media realizes that if their candidate is to win, they need to give 'em that life by proclaiming them runaway winners of debates. And they are fawning over Hillary. Did she really say much of anything interesting?? Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle was a lot more memorable...in any election in history? Beating Lincoln/Douglas, Dewey/Truman, Wilson/Taft/Roosevelt, Kennedy vs. Nixon, etc.? Sanders just gift-wrapped the nomination. Can America elect someone who honeymooned in Russia, supported the Sandanistas in Nicaragua and tried to visit Castro in Cuba?
  22. I think that was also for hitting coach, although that makes less sense with Steverson seemingly set to return. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2...house/15314435/ Here's an example of his impact on the Royals' clubhouse and team confidence last year.
  23. LOL. No Astros in the World Series. Won't even make it past Wednesday. They're not quite ready for prime time because of their bullpen. No houses wagered, though. Just because of 1969, I'll pick the Mets over the Cubs for the NLCS. (Actually, I don't have a strong feeling about what will happen in that series...anything's possible, as the Dodgers have to be back as the slight favorite, playing at home and with Greinke on the mound.)
  24. Yep, and I'm going to bet Greg's house they end up picking up Alexei's option because they can't sell competing with Saladino or Stephen Drew or anyone but Ian Desmond (FA) or a higher-caliber SS taking his place. That player MAY be out there, but it's about as easy to match up for a trade as it is to get a great leadoff hitter, 3B, C, etc. So you insert Alexei into the equation and you're talking about ONE guy (a LH replacement for Jennings) and Parra. Or the guy Rabbit mentioned, Stephen Pearce. It's definitely going to be "under the radar," and those kinds of smaller moves for the most part worked coming into 2005 (not counting the F. Garcia deal, of course). It might be another Korean INF, or a Japanese player, or more veteran Cuban who's undervalued. You can forget Wieters, all of the OF/DH names...and Ben Zobrist will be too attractive to bigger market/win now teams like the Royals, Cubs, Astros, Mets, Cardinals, Dodgers, etc. Zobrist would be a LUXURY to have (for the White Sox) versus a necessity on those playoff teams due to his positional versatility/flexibility.
  25. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 13, 2015 -> 10:58 PM) Lol...you actually suggested that the Cubs winning the World Series could bring out more Sox fans next year. That has to be one of the dumbest theories in Soxtalk history and proves how out of touch you are with the Chicago sports scene. I will stand by what I said, any Sox fan wanting the Cubs to win a World Series is a f***ing idiot. Our fanbase is incredibly small considering the size of the Chicago market and will continue to shrink if the Cubs win a World Series and/or go on an extended run of success. How many lifelong Blackhawks fans have been born during their recent mini-dynasty? Why would the Cubs, second only to the Bears in Chicago, be any different? There are thousands of young, impressionable fans looking for a team to invest in and an elite Cubs club is a pretty attractive option. A portion of these fans will go on to become season ticket holders and ultimately a critical source of revenue. Beyond these long-term implications, the Sox have a TV deal that expires in 2019. The new TV contract is of incredible importance to our organization's ability to compete in the mid-term, so it's absolutely critical that the front office build up interest/viewership in the team between now and then. If you actually think strong Cubs ratings don't have a direct impact on our own, then I don't know what to tell you. By the way, get off your high horse. I've seen you spew this "bad look" s*** in multiple threads involving a variety of subjects. My rant, if you want to call it that, has zero impact on the fanbase or board's image. The simple notion that it somehow does is beyond laughable. For someone who claims "we are not to judge", you sure do like to call people out on a regular basis. I'll only say two things. Bandwagon fans of any "hot" or trendy/popular team in ANY sport suck. Doesn't matter if it's Florida Gulf Coast, Butler, VCU, George Mason or the Cubs/Astros/Royals/Mets. Two, the biggest problem with the current Cubs' resurgence is that will take almost all of the air out of the atmosphere for the Sox...90% of the coverage will go to the Cubs. We will be lucky to get 2-3 days of favorable coverage between now and Spring Training, IF we actually do something significant in terms of trades or free agent acquisitions. There are only so many column inches in a newspaper or minutes available on a broadcast. It will be almost like the White Sox don't exist, their scores or an Abreu/Sale highlight will get thrown in at the very end just to be "fair" and inclusive, but nothing short of a playoff run will get them any attention. Not even bringing back Ozzie Guillen as manager. Well, maybe if Mike Ditka was named manager of the Sox, haha. Going from a 60/40 split, or 2/3rd's:1/3rd versus 90:10 is going to really hurt this offseason, and we're already hurting as it is...it's like rubbing salt in the wounds, that the Cubs are doing (successfully) the same thing we haven't done until it was way too late (assuming we are actually planning to get younger instead of more veteran hitters).
