Two poll questions as we enter the offseason
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 7, 2015 -> 05:05 PM) What exactly have you read about Fabian that would make you want as GM over Hahn? He's our Luhnow/Megdal. Very experienced with advanced statistical analysis (he's the one who created our in-house proprietary database), but he also has a strong background behind the scenes in scouting and evaluation. He's just not a self-promoter, seems like a very humble guy...works well with others behind the scenes to build consensus. I don't have time to pull all of his interviews and write-ups, but he's impressive.

Let's not forget, Joe Biden almost immediately dropped out of the 1988 race over plagiarism charges. If the authenticity of your personal story comes into question, or you end up spending more time on Holocaust and Egyptian granary questions, it's going to be difficult to ever get back on track, at least based on the way he handled himself in the CNN interview. Trust is easy to lose and hard to regain. Making the media the target only works for so long. At any rate, Trump and Ted Cruz, Rubio to a lesser extent, are the big gainers nationally and in Iowa.

Two poll questions as we enter the offseason
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 7, 2015 -> 01:48 PM) Are you really tying to discredit Hahn because he effectively leveraged his talent evaluators? No, but I'm also not willing to give him all the credit in the world either unless he was the one personally responsible for bringing those three into the organization. From virtually everything I've read of Fabian, I would rather have him as GM. Obviously, there are going to be various shades or degrees (like when Don Cooper gets all the credit or no credit for the success of virtually every pitcher coming onto the big league roster and even some highly-ranked prospects). Paddy and KW are the ones who personally scouted Abreu more than once, are they not?

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-free-agen...WQDBHNlYwNzYw-- Here's the real story of how Quintana came to the Sox. You have two scouts and then Dan Fabian before you even get to Hahn.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 7, 2015 -> 01:28 PM) Bruce Jenner won the decathlon almost 40 years ago. He was considered the greatest athlete in the world. Now that he has transitioned into Caityn, maybe he would like to give being a baseball GM a try. He really impressed the world,as an athlete. That's a truly impressive defense of Rick Hahn. Seems we can't come up with many positives about Ventura or Hahn, so this is the only alternative apparently. The only thing we do know is that KW at one time was very good in talent evaluation and especially extracting surplus value in under the radar trades.

Two poll questions as we enter the offseason
QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 7, 2015 -> 01:23 PM) all excellent points. the key that you are missing is the cost of diminishing return on any investment, and the players and every contract is being considered an investment. No, because the hundreds of millions of dollars in difference between playoff teams in 2018 and 2019 and our current situation going into a new negotiation...if you take a terrible team that has just traded Sale/Q/Abreu/Rodon vs. the positive vibes the Cubs have going now, who get's the lion's share of the broadcast rights money? You have not only the state of the Sox to consider, but also the enhanced state of the Cubs fighting for those same media dollars. Would you fork over premium prices for the team with the lowest viewership in the majors right now as a tv exec? Why?

White Sox make qualifying offer to Jeff Samardzija.
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 7, 2015 -> 12:45 PM) Mella will end up being a reliever. The pick the White Sox will receive is a better return than that. Let's not forget how valuable dominant relievers are right now. If you could have had Frankie Montas' equivalent TODAY for Shark or a 5-7.5% chance at an All-Star or at least another Adams who wouldn't pay off until 2019 or 2020 and you're in win now mode (Year 2) which route would you go?

The only players really worth signing are the ones out of the White Sox price range in the first place...with the biggest question marks going to Ian Desmond and some of those second-tier veteran starting pitchers. You definitely can't emulate Minnesota's veteran fa spending here (except on the position player side, as opposed to Nolasco/Hughes/Santana) where you break open the bank for 2-3 more veterans like Kendrick unless you're truly willing to spend further into the $150s or $160s to close a majority of the holes.

What about Man Soo Lee? That deal doesn't get you Todd Frazier, unfortunately. If it's Anderson or Montas substituted for one of those names, then you're a lot closer. Imagine you're a Cincy fan...would you be excited by anyone there at all other than Adams? Just think of the Shark/Russell deal...or even Donaldson to TOR. There has to be at least one surefire starting position player going back in return and/or more overall prospect talent included.

And what has Hahn done as either an athlete or talent evaluator that makes you feel 100% confident he's the right person to be making these decisions? Other than the Abreu signing, which we always hear was mostly attributable to KW and Paddy's efforts...

They will miss White and Olaseni's athleticism. They have two teams, the veterans in Gesell, Jok, Uthoff, Clemmons and Woodbury...and a collection of freshmen and jc guys. Hopefully losing to a d2 team serves as a wakeup call.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 11:18 PM) Haha you think this board is too optimistic? A very large portion of posters have basically given up on the next 5 seasons. I see way more pessimism than optimism. Not speaking in generalities about the entire board. Just the idea of judging others for their attitudes, attendance, basically all the aspects of how they follow the team...and then relating that back to blaming the fans for being stuck in a non-compete cycle because they're 1) too afraid to do a teardown and complete rebuild OR 2) too conservative/cautious to spend (let's call it investing for a future rate of return) 15-25% over budget for a couple of years and dump bad contracts in order to recoup that money 2 or 3 times over in 2019 with the negotiation for a new broadcasting rights package. So we're basically stuck in that $120-130 "dead zone" where we're not terrible but not terribly competitive either due to overall weaknesses in the farm system in terms of position player replacements. There are no easy answers if you look at the position they're in, despite many arguing last year's free agents misses and Shark wouldn't impact the future.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 10:15 PM) I LOVE his flat tax. Get rid of the gawd-damned IRS!!!!!! Thank you Mr. Carson! So far I'm OK with his position on gun control. Give Americans access to weapons but try to prevent people from geting the semiautomatic stuff. Illini ... my uncle pitched for the U of I and I respect the school and your opinions, but I think you are wrong if you don't believe I need a gun to protect myself in churches, lectures, parades, etc. There are loonie-birds out there wanting me dead! -- He wants to give us $2,000 for health savings accounts and get rid of Obamacare. That won't pass anyway, so I don't know why it matters what I think of it. I don't know if that's a good plan or not. I am appalled by health care in the USA and one of the candidates should tackle the bulls*** costs of staying in the hospital. 50 dollar aspirin still the going rate?? -- His stance on immigration seems ok. Those here illegally can apply for guest worker status if they first leave the country and apply. If not we kick them out. -- I wish he would let everybody buy marijuana not just the people who need it medically. -- No abortions after 20 weeks. That seems good by me. That's five months. The baby is pretty much a functioning human being by then. He said gay marriage is the law but he personally believes marriage should be between a man and woman. I want gay couples to have the same rights as marrieds, but hit me over the head with a hammer if you hate me for it, but I agree with him. I just happen to believe marriage should be between a man and woman. That said like Carson said, the law is the law. I don't begrudge anybody. I just think if God wanted gay marriage there would be a biological way a man could have another man's baby. Again I'm no zealot. I'm not against gay rights. All people are created equal. But the formal idea of marriage?? I think it should be man/woman. Sorry. --His foreign policy stance is aggressive enough for me. Step up efforts to stop the militant groups!!! Thank you Mr. Carson. All in all I think his policies are OK. Sorry if I offended with my marriage answer. I guess I'm a bad person for not believing marriage should be reserved for man/woman unions. Nobody at SoxTalk is attacking you for your beliefs in terms of gay marriage. It's called freedom of religion. Now if you were running for elected office in KS, you would be a fair target...but you know as well as I that it will never pass into law in that state.

If it's written in black and white in your official biography, the only one to blame is your ghostwriter...or the teller of the stories, Carson in this case. He had the right to edit it before it was released.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 09:05 PM) Freese may not be the answer, but really, who is out there that IS the answer? Fraizer is about the only guy out there that might realistically be traded and even he has some downfalls (cost to acquire, time till free agency). The AA or AAA equivalent of Matt Davidson/Olt but with more contact and better defense.

Byung-ho Park bidding rights won by Twins, $12.85 m
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-free-agen...WQDBHNlYwNzYw-- When I say unproven, I meant the lack of history of translating those huge KBO numbers to MLB. Just Choo and now Kang. Essentially the Korean version of Abreu...with a less lofty valuation. Indians, Rays, Cardinals cited here as the best fits or matches, so at least six or seven possible landing spots.

Byung-ho Park bidding rights won by Twins, $12.85 m
The rumor is the posting fee posting fee and five years, $40 million. If the White Sox weren't stuck with LaRoche they could probably afford $53 million, but that's a lot for someone relatively unproven from the KBO. Yankees are also interested.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 06:44 PM) Beckham was picked 8th and has the 8th highest career WAR of the 46 players considered 1st round picks that year. Not as huge of a miss. Hawkins 13th, appears to be a miss, I will give you that one. Even Dayton Moore misses. Christain Colon 4th ? Chris Sale would have looked nice. Bubba Starling 5th? Sonny Gray might have been able to keep Cueto from having to be acquired and kept the dynamic duo of Duffy and Finegan together forever. Now I am forced to refer you to AFL stats and the fact that Starling's really coming on the last 12-16 months. And, as has been stated here many times, any moves that lead to championships are automatically validated pretty much no matter what the prospects end up doing. Finnegan is having some conditioning issues, and some dealing with coaches as well. At least I was right about Hector Santiago from the first day he pitched in relief against the Twins. Finnegan won't succeed as a starter unless he works on his stamina and secondary pitches.

Last time we checked, Beckham and Hawkins weren't exactly "low" draft picks. The complaint isn't so much about Sale, Anderson, Rodon and Fulmer as it is the wasteland which is all the other rounds the last two decades. They've done decently with pitchers such as Santiago, Reed, Petricka, Erik Johnson, and Nate Jones, but position players are another matter...that we've paid dearly for covering up minor league deficiencies with "buy high for diminished future production" results. The cycle feels endless at this point. One report comparing or linking Shark to Leake or Kazmir (with an agenda to make the Sox look better) isn't any more compelling than not knowing a single fact here. And Honestly, by that line of thinking, we were almost ready to give out the equivalent of a $90-100 million deal to Mike Leake or Scott Kazmir....how disastrous would that have been for Hahn/KW? Talk about poor evaluation. Would those two pitchers also have been projected by the front office to lead the Sox to the second wild card as Hahn intimated staying pat would do at the deadline?
