  1. I thought Chisenhall was on the 60 day DL... Aaron Cunningham was supposed to be hitting then for the Indians. At any rate, it's 3-2 Indians now, bottom of the 7th. Cunningham's on 2nd because there was an error by Fister on the play. Pestano, then Perez.
  2. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 08:13 PM) Gameday says batters hitting .205 off Quintana first 45 pitches, .365 after. That's usually true for every pitcher in baseball except Verlander. Pretty common splits the 2nd/3rd time you see the same starter.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 08:14 PM) Well, to Marty's credit, it would be nice for Viciedo to start doing damage at the plate again. Or Beckham.
  4. Joe Smith, you suck. OAK up 3-1 now over TOR.
  5. Morneau was safe. Great throw from Juan Pierre to Alexei Ramirez to Beckham. LOL.
  6. By the way, 3 years ago was the Buehrle/DeWise game.
  7. Ramirez always comes to play big-time D behind Quintana. We've got a man there.
  8. 0/5 with RISP so far tonight. Thankfully, Dozier threw that one away. Viciedo and Beckham (3 for his last 29) both scuffling.
  9. Greinke's pitched a good game against the Phils. Cubs taking it to the Pirates, surprisingly. That old axiom of teams with nothing to lose playing spoilers in the last 60+ games of the season.
  10. Crap. Why can we never ever seem to give Quintana a comfortable lead to work with?
  11. Thanks Gordon, great at-bat. Tigers threatening, 1st and 2nd, only one out, top of the 6th.
  12. Is Ventura going to put in Reed AGAIN if Quintana has a shutout going into the 9th?
  13. Please hire the Twins' batboy to go on the road and take out Michael Young and Ian Kinsler. Thanks.
  14. Oak out early over TOR, 2-0. Cespedes and Reddick with OPS numbers in high 800's. Quite impressive with half their games at the Coliseum. Chris Carter, 5 homers, 9 RBI's, 1.111 OPS in the early going. Cue Phil Rogers article. Don't think I've ever seen this in my life. Lind, .237, Arencibia, .238, Kelly Johnson, .239, all batting in that order. Weird.
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 05:25 PM) You make sense. No way Sox will keep Peavy. Sox are way to cheap to do that. I don't know why they'd give up any young pieces in a deal that involves Greinke as well. Odds are very low that Zach will pick Chicago as his destination in free agency. No way Sox are going to give him a long term deal for enough money to get a contract done. I'd rather take Buerhle back if the Marlins eat 25-35% of his remaining contract. I'm sure JW would be more in favor of that than $100-112.5 million over 5 years to Greinke.
  16. Thankfully, CLE is 5-1 against DET this year and playing them at Progressive. Although Jimenez is averaging as many K's and BB's per 9, he's pitched 3 very good games against DET at home. Ooops, had first and second, no outs, Fielder made a great stop for a forceout, then Kipnis inexplicably got picked off 1B. Indians are scuffling. Brantley K's, stranding the runner at 3rd. 0-0, top of 2nd.
  17. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 06:09 PM) What's more insane, taking on the $18 million (the marginal cost) for an ace or trying to replace said ace for less in free agency or via trade? Depends where the Sox finish. No way Peavy comes back if we don't make the playoffs or he/the team fades in August and Sept. What about the cost of replacing Youk, AJ and Floyd?
  18. Hawk..."You're darn right, I had an oblique pull for six years, kept me from making the Red Sox Hall of Fame."
  19. Still not clear. Is it 45 appearances or 45 games where he is the last pitcher in the game, save situation or finishing the game one way or the other? The way I would read it is that it would automatically vest at 45. If he doesn't get the 45, then the team holding the contract would still owe him $3 million for the buyout. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense. He can't get to 45, only for the Astros to cancel or void it with the $3 million.
  20. If we're more worried about Jake Peavy's feelings than the welfare of the ballclub, someone's got to man up. I really don't think this is the case at all...and Jake has to realize it would be insane for us to pick up that option. He's getting paid like an ace, and he's been close to an ace this year, but gambling on it happening two years in a row, with how he's been a lot more hittable in the 2nd half, it's just not a logical move. I would rather have Youkilis, Floyd, AJ and Simon Castro rather than one Jake Peavy (maybe you can erase one of those names of Floyd/Youk/AJ), but the point still remains, if the only other option is Morel, Flowers and Peavy or Castro, Youk and AJ, no way do I think about retaining Jakemeister.
  21. Do we know who is on the hook for Myers' $3 million buyout? I would imagine we're only getting $1 million from the Astros is the reason we didn't surrender any top talent.
  22. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 04:54 PM) Elite command of 5 pitches >>>> spotty command of mid-upper 90's heat + inconsistent if eye-popping breaking ball and Actual results on a major league field >>>>> perfect future world performance scenarios dreamed up by talent evaluators The other GMs can keep their prospects because Quintana is here to stay, and rightfully so. Thanks a lot, Cashman. Really appreciate it. Don't even need 5. But he has 3, and working on 4-5.
  23. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 03:58 PM) You sure they get better? Castellanos is unproven and if he's anything like other highly-touted DET prospects (Andrew Miller, Jacob Turner), he could be overvalued (not to mention he's learning the outfield now and leaving 3b); Smyly has been hit hard at times and Alburquerque just had surgery on his elbow. Martinez is a stud, no doubt, but will be 34 and coming off major knee surgery after missing an entire season. On another note, if Miami is imploding, I'd love to see KW make a call for Buehrle. What the hell. "In his past five starts, Buehrle is 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk rate of 5.0 in that solid stretch of games." Realistically, there's very few areas you can improve that Tigers team. 1) Moving Peralta off SS, trade or DH him (but Victor Martinez would take those abs) 2) More consistency from Porcello and Scherzer 3) Better results out of Boesch and Young...this is where Berry has been a godsend, but his pedigree says he's a one-year wonder 4) Permanent solution at 2B 5) For Avila to be anything resembling the offensive force he was in 2011 6) Bullpen, although Below, Villarreal (he becomes the closer in the next year or two), Dotel, Benoit and Valverde are coming around and definitely above average 7) Figuring out if Raburn will ever be serviceable again or dumping him, ala Inge We can wonder about Castellanos and some of their other prospects, but they managed to produce: 1) Boesch 2) Raburn (good before this year) 3) Danny Worth 4) Dirks 5) Avila In other words, they've arguably been more productive with position prospects than the White Sox. We can cite Dayan, DeAza and Beckham, but then it's unfair not to include Austin Jackson too, even though he was close to a finished product....they've worked to improve him, and Gordon has regressed mightily.
  24. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 04:02 PM) He may not have great stuff, but how many guys with great stuff have we seen not put it together in this organization? His pitching acumen and stones are off the charts, IMO. Those two qualities, combined with his average stuff will make him a very solid #2 or #3 pitcher, IMHO. In the last 5-6 years, not many. People always cite examples like Aardsma, MacDougal or Masset, but these were all pitchers who struggled to throw secondary pitches and they're relievers. We can find a ton of examples in that 1998-2001 group...but not as many since. I'm assuming you're not counting the likes of Poreda, Broadway and McCulloch, as none of them were highly touted, except for maybe Broadway, but he was clearly overdrafted based on his college results and signability and didn't do anything with the Mets and other teams. You've got Hudson, Gio, Richard, maybe Harrell has probably done better than anyone expected with the Astros...but the only "failure" we have is Hudson and who's to know now how much of a failure that will turn out being. McCarthy brought Danks, etc. Examples?? And I mean pitchers who were drafted in the first three-five rounds and expected to make it.
