White Sox Acquire RP Tony Pena from ARI for Brandon Allen
danman31 replied to chetkincaid's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 10:40 PM) Futuresox, baseball cube, minorleaguebaseball, etc.. all has him born as January 12,1986. Unless I can't count I'm assuming/taking a shot at the dark here that he's an early 23. For the record, I took his birthday off of baseball cube which has it 1/12. milb.com has it 2/12. I should have double checked. I'm sure milb is more accurate than the cube. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 11:56 PM) The return for Allen should be much more of a sure thing than a risk/project type. Actually I think this trade is trading the riskier guy for the safer guy. Both players have upside and potential still, but the floor for Pena is mediocre reliever in the Majors. The floor for Allen is that he doesn't do anything in the Majors. The upside for Pena is a damn good setup guy or a closer. Allen's upside is an average/solid starting 1B. Pena has the higher floor, but the lower ceiling. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) Well, I would imagine that Phegley and Flowers are going nowhere now. Phegley isn't trade eligible. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 07:18 PM) we may overvalue Allen a bit, but his power is real. Just looked at what he did in B-Ham last year in so few at-bats, and mind you B-Ham is a brutal hitter's park. He also is pretty darn athletic at first base and really has cut his strikeouts down. I just don't understand how a guy like Shelby can't net you a mediocre, 27-year-old reliever, because he probably could have. Shelby couldn't net a high upside Major League reliever. Allen might have been able to get a bit more, but not by much. This is a guy with a falling stock that was projected as an average first baseman before that. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:10 PM) I would rather have Chris Perez than Tony Pena, he's younger and has more upside. Plus supposedly the PTBNL in that deal is somebody good. How does Perez have more upside? QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 10:28 PM) Matt Thornton was a first round pick, who found his true potential by converting to relief and working with Don Cooper. Tony Pena was signed as an amateur free agent, and crafted into the pitcher he is now. Pena wasn't draft eligible. He's from the Dominican. -
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) Whomever is doing the futuresox twitter updates is doing a splendid job!! Is that you Alex? I think it's mostly Jason. I do maybe a couple per week if I see something that isn't already on there. I think it's a great addition to the site.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) nice first outing for bellamy....2 perfect IP 3 K I really like him. The upside might be somewhat limited, but he should freaking destroy the low minors. I like him enough to be in AA sometime next season. I've seen him on TV a couple times and he is a really polished pitcher. I'm not completely sold on the deception of the sidearm being as successful in AA or higher, but that's why he was a 5th rounder and not higher. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 01:53 AM) He's doing well. Still acclimating himself to AA. More patient hitters, so he's having to throw more pitches. I've seen him twice and his fastball was humming the first time, but a little flat the second time. Which accounted for the 5 runs he gave up. It topped out at 98 the first time and just 94 the second. He has a good set of offspeed stuff. He had a low 80's change and something he threw in the high 70's. But, both times he was efficient with his pitch count. It's funny you say you don't know what his breaking ball is because the scouting reports I've read on him (mostly from college/draft time though) don't even agree on what it is. One said he had a good curve and mentioned a slider. One said he had a plus slider that he relied on a lot. Another said he had a 'good breaking ball,' not even going as far as to name what pitch it was.

For the record, Burdie is actually 23 and spent 3 years in the DSL. I wanted to like him because he puts up very good K numbers, but the Sox aren't pushing him like a prospect.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 01:53 PM) I dont understand why he uses the term "bush league attitude". Is it just to get attention for someone to read. I must be missing something. Yeah, he sure went a long way to get to his point too and after taking several paragraphs to set it up he used one example to explain his bush league point. Very odd story.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) I have an urge to create a Carlos Quentin AAP page. Jose Contreras was ridiculous enough.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 08:22 AM) Taking him in the 55th round, fine. Heck, given the pedigree, one could even argue they are more likely tham similar players to succeed anyway. But 6th round? Seriously? Haha that says something that they don't even have 55 rounds.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 02:42 AM) I'd buy the Cubs and move them to Portland, Oregon. Then I'd sell them. LOL that's freaking spectacular. That's the best so far. -
Knights lost 5-1 Harrell 5 IP 4 R Allen 2-4 Barons in a delay W-S PPD Kanny lost 3-1 Phegley finally got to play catcher: 1-3 with a double, passed ball, threw out both runners that tried to steal 11th rounder Ballinger already moved up and got the start: 3 IP, 3 R Great Falls Bristol

Most guys go to indy ball (though that's usually for pitchers) if they don't sign as a 1st-round junior though. His LSU career is almost certainly over, but that doesn't always mean a guy will sign. That said, I'm not worried about Mitchell at all. I'm just saying.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 04:08 PM) Why do you say that? They are taking it extremely slowly with him.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 03:23 PM) Alexei is looking more and more like an OF everyday. Stop it. He's not going to play the OF and that's not a very good idea anyway.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 12:58 PM) Haha, Granderson made it over Jermaine. Yeah that's unforgivable. Oh well, as long as the fans vote and one team gets a mandatory player the rosters won't be the best players. I like having each team with a player, but the fan voting is stupid.

He's been a strike out guy since the DSL and I've been saying he could be solid since then, but the Sox don't seem to think too highly of him.
-
QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:26 PM) He also threw out three guys trying to steal and picked off another two. Not a bad day behind the dish. Yeah, good catch. That is a hell of a day. On the year he has thrown out 7 of 17, including his last 5. It looks like Griffith has trouble holding runners, they were 7/9 stealing off of him with Gonzalez behind the plate. Taking out Griffith, Gonzalez is 5/8. That's excellent, but he does have 4 passed balls in 7 games as a catcher. Also, has anyone else noticed that Gilmore has an astounding 25 errors this season? Wowzers.

Tyler Kuhn is 13 for his last 19 in high-A. That's one heck of a streak.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 10:55 AM) 12th round CF Kyle Colligan making rookie ball look pretty easy in his first 10 games. So far batting .400 (11 for 35) with 7 of his 11 hits coming for extra bases... 3 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 homeruns. I like Colligan after seeing him in action in the Big 12. I wrote a piece on FutureSox about him. I think he could make some noise in our system. Link

What the f*** -
The 18 year-old catcher raking for the BriSox. I'm trying to find some info on him, but so far the best I've found is a quote from the Bristol manager saying he's going to be fun to watch this year. Last year in the DSL he hit .294 with a .757 OPS. Nothing great, but he is young and plays catcher. Oh and his stats this year... .429 (12-28) with 2 HR and only one strikeout. A nice 1.217 OPS. Let's hope the Venezuelan can keep up his hot start and become the 3rd catching prospect in the system. MILB page

QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 01:52 AM) I have never seen someone so mediocre defensively, in any sport, get praised as much as he does. The kicker? People think he is a gold glove caliber defender. He's far from mediocre on defense.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 09:47 PM) This isn't me being an ass to you, so don't take it that way. But I'm getting sick of all the moving Beckham all over the damn infield talk. Leave him right where he is right now. Why? The talk is valid. Beckham is a more valuable bat at 2B and Fields has been showing his power stroke again. Getz and Nix have been playing better lately, but I think Fields has more upside than either and has shown enough potential previously (his .788 OPS in 400 PA in 2007) to deserve every chance possible to succeed.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) To be honest I hate divisional games sometimes. I was going to start a thread/poll about this a month ago and for some reason I didn't. I get sick of seeing the same teams 18 or 19 times a year. I mean, in the NFL, the Bears don't play the Packers 3x a year, etc (pretty bad comparison but you get the point). 2 games against the Packers out of 16 (2/16) = 12.5% of the total schedule 19 games out of 162 against a divisional team (19/162) = 11.7% of the total schedule QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 12:06 AM) You ever noticed that in Little League, high school etc. the pitcher always seems to also be the best hitter on the team? Then by the time they go pro that just goes to s*** although some of them still keep it (Zambrano etc.) That's because the talent gap is bigger in Little League. The best athletes are the most coordinated or most developed and are generally better at whatever they do in sports. It does go back to how baseball has gradually shifted to specialization over the years. They would have laughed at a LOOGY back in the day.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 07:02 PM) Who is this Serafin fellow at Bristol? 37th rounder out of Vermont this year. Great Falls won 7-1 behind a spectacular outing from Terry Doyle 7 IP, R, 14 K, BB. Doyle is a 2nd year pro out of Boston College. Those are big time numbers though.
