  1. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 27, 2010 -> 09:31 PM) There was a big article i read a couple months ago about a Microsoft China slave shop. 16 hour work days. Sleep at your work station. It's really outrageous that no one in the west cares about this. I guess as long as 'stuff' is cheap no one cares. I care, but it's kind of like pissing into the wind.
  2. Don't you just hate it when you are out of work for longer than a couple of days, and you divide/delegate the things you are normally responsible for among your co-workers in a relatively simple way, and you come back and they either haven't bothered to do it or they've f***ed everything up?
  3. I'm just really happy to see Joe West finally facing a massive backlash.
  4. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 19, 2010 -> 06:16 PM) a lot of 'high-education' jobs have been going overseas the past 10 years or so. One (well, two) thing i can tell you about globalization is that it's misunderstood, and really hard to explain and understand. If there was a hypothetical person in charge of branding and marketing globalization they should've been fired 10 years ago. I'm not that great at explaining these things but basically what happens is Country A makes Product X cheaply and efficiently, and Country B does the same with Product Y. So Country A agrees to ship a certain number of Product X to Country B in exchange for a certain number of Product Y. You might have losses of jobs of people who make Product Y in Country A (like cars for example) but in theory there's actually no net job loss because there are more jobs in other sectors to make the other goods. But it looks like the country is sending a bunch of jobs overseas especially to the people that used to make Product Y. China is a whole other animal though, they kind of cheat at this game.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:51 AM) Then the Dems need some more good candidates this fall. He pretty much ran as a Republican didn't he?
  6. s***, I forgot the Sox were playing early today.
  7. Hanley is whining about being benched. I suggest he shuts the f*** up and gets over himself like Jimmy Rollins did.
  8. He said "as soon as possible," he didn't say "now."
  9. This team's BABIP doesn't have much to do with anything. The reason they have low batting averages is because they aren't doing s*** at the plate. See Beckham, Quentin, Kotsay, etc. You can't watch 10 at-bats from those guys and then come away thinking "oh, they've just been unlucky for an extended period of time"
  10. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 17, 2010 -> 07:56 PM) Am I the only one that forgot about the western conference finals? The playoff scheduling is pathetic. I thought you only got bye weeks in the NFL? I don't even remember what Nash and Kobe look like. What the hell is up with these 3 game breaks? Phoenix is not that far from L.A. at all.
  11. I don't have any reason to hate Omar Vizquel (it's not his fault he's 43 and way past his prime) but Ozzie is not giving me much choice.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 17, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) Not a chance. What has Obama done that would be considered ultra leftist? (Only moderates can respond to that ) You have to ask a bona fide dyed-in-the-wool leftist that, not even a moderate really (but yeah, like Balta said, everybody thinks they're a moderate or an "independent" e.g. the Tea Party this year) But if you made a list of all the things the "left" wants and the things Obama either did, or is planning to do, how many match? Pretty much none. Don't Ask Don't Tell? Maybe? Eventually? Definitely not healthcare despite what Republicans will tell you. The war drawing down in Iraq I suppose although not at the pace they'd like. Sotomayor was seen as "acceptable" but not really what they wanted. There is a lot of "almost" or "maybe" but not much that really matches up with the wider left's goals.
  13. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 16, 2010 -> 06:14 PM) On a different note, anyone here ever try to type on a netbook after typing on a regular laptop or keyboard? My typing is bad enough, these posts take 3x as long having to go back and fix all the red-lined words when I use this little thing. Yes
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 16, 2010 -> 12:23 PM) Keep in mind the naysayers were saying the same types ofthings about Jordan until the Bulls finally won. He was a great talent, didn't make the others better, a ballhog, etc. James is only a year older than Taj Gibson. If the Bulls get LeBron and they stay healthy, they will be in the finals every year for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't make that comparison though - look at the teams Jordan had to get through, and single-handedly because they either didn't have Pippen or he wasn't the Pippen we remember yet. Lakers, Celtics, Pistons in the 80s - those are some of the best teams ever and I don't think there is a team in today's NBA that even comes close to those, really.
  15. I love it. The slight delay in loading is kind of annoying, but I'll get used to it.
  16. I always wondered how utility companies can bury cables so neatly. When Verizon did it the only reason I know they had been there was because I had orange lines spraypainted on my lawn. I know where the main line is (runs behind my row of houses) and you could see where some of the grass was missing while they installed that) but once that was down, when they ran lines to the houses, you didn't see any disruption in the surface at all.
  17. I keep hearing "LeBron has no heart" because he had an absolutely terrible Game 5 that he deserves to get ripped a new one for. But it's like all these people forgot about the 2008 Finals where Kobe played below-average to poor basketball for pretty much the whole series, and of course the Celtics won that series pretty convincingly. Now, I enjoy ripping on LeBron (and Kobe too for that matter) but it gets to a point where I would just be denying their actual ability... does anyone say Kobe lacks heart? Hopefully not, or at least not anyone halfway intelligent... Kobe's team just got beat by a better team that year, and the Lakers went on to win next year. The only real criticism you can make of Kobe's 4 rings is how Shaq is why they won the first 3.
  18. LeBron doesn't need the ball most of the time to be effective. That's kind of a false comparison. I hate to default to the cliche, but did having Jordan limit Pippen's effectiveness by scoring too much? No, not even close. Pippen probably could've scored more without Jordan and vice versa, but does that really matter? Put them together and they win more games than they do without each other (or at least they get farther in the playoffs), it's really simple. Rose is willing to sacrifice to create for others, but he can also get points when he wants to. So the idea that LeBron doesn't "need" a point because he's such a good passer is asinine, that's like saying he wouldn't be any good playing next to Wade because they both score too much. For another example see Magic's career numbers. He didn't really score very much because he had Hall of Famers to do it for him and he could run the offense, but does anyone doubt that he couldn't drop 30 if the Lakers needed him to? And what else does Magic have? Oh, that's right, a fistful of rings.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 15, 2010 -> 07:42 PM) Where you are wrong is no one ever says a "pure free market" is the answer. But that's how it gets labeled, and now we have this arguement that is started incorrectly before it even starts, because you are assuming either the worst or at best, incorrectly. No one is "kill(ing) off all of the protections", not even close. It's easier to villify the other side when you frame your entire arguement as such, though, because that way you can point to the government as the only thing that works. Because there really is no such thing as a "pure free market" there needs to be certain regulations and the state needs to artificially prop certain things up and intervene sometimes, and it's not necessarily a bad thing, there would be no market without it. Only the most hardcore libertarian from 1885 would argue otherwise although that particular ideology has been proven unworkable over time. I know this is not exactly what you're talking about but it gets lost in translation and rhetoric all the time.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2010 -> 09:55 AM) Huh? See McCain, John
  21. I know people are asking can Rose and LeBron play together, but I don't know why. That's misunderstanding the kind of player Rose is, the reason he dominates the ball so much is because he's the only true scorer on the Bulls right now. It's also misunderstanding the kind of player LeBron is - people just assume he's a ballhog, he's really not, he averages almost 10 assists a game. But seriously you add LeBron first and then worry about how it's going to work with other players later.
  22. Yeah really, using this case as an argument against deregulation is like using the Shahzad Faisal case to argue against Mirandizing terrorism suspects (Faisal basically gave up everything after being read his rights plus he was a U.S. citizen).
  23. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ May 14, 2010 -> 08:51 PM) It's a matter of what's most important to him. Is it his legacy on the basketball court, or his life outside of basketball that is supreme? Remember, he stated he wanted to be a billion dollar athlete. Money is super important to him. If he wants pure money, he goes to New York. If he wants to be with what he knows, he stays in Cleveland, if he cares purely about his basketball legacy, he'll probably go to the Bulls. Honestly, I think winning isn't as important as you guys think he is. This guy is so self absorbed with himself, he believes he can win anywhere. For the most part, he is right. Without LeBron, Cleveland probably doesn't make the playoffs or they are an 8th seed. If he went to the Clippers, they would be a top team next year. Right now, he's mad because he lost after another great season. When they actually get a competent coach in there, they'll be fine. Of course, I'd gladly eat crow. Concerning basketball, I really don't think there's much you can do in New York that you can't do in Chicago.
  24. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 14, 2010 -> 02:05 PM) So because there are no references to Mexicans regarding the Revolutionary War, you think it is ok to teach them that American 'stole' part of their country and such? To be divisive? All this does is fuel the racial animosity even more by trying to give them victim status. I mean... truthfully speaking and squeezing it into a short statement, that's kind of what happened... Manifest Destiny and all that. We fought a war to take their land and we won and then basically coerced them into allowing the Gadsden Purchase.
  25. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ May 13, 2010 -> 03:19 PM) Hence my initial internet joke...which fell as flat as kate hudson playboy spread. I lol'd if it makes you feel better
