To defend Marte, he picks up blown saves because he often comes into situations with men on base where other pitchers have been knocked out. Can anyone clarify, has Marte ever been the OFFICIAL closer of the Sox? There was a time last year when he and Gordon were kinda sharing the load but has Marte ever been THE guy??

I find LaRussa's pitching moves so predictable sometimes. He definitely plays it by the book.

I like Koch's attitude more than Hawkins. If Koch were only a better pitcher, he would be beloved in this town. With Hawkins, it seems like he isn't gonna talk to the media until he gets on a hot streak. Also regarding the line "You can't do what I can do", I don't think Hawkins would make a very good sportswriter either.

Let's say you had a pitcher that gave up two runs every inning he pitched, that is he had an ERA of 18.00. Let's say you put him into ten save situations at the start of the 9th inning and he didn't blow any of them because every single one your team had a 3-run lead. Now let's say you are playing Minnesota in the rubber match of a set and have a one run lead going into the 9th. Would you throw your 18.00 ERA closer out there because he was 10/10 in save opportunities? This is of course a bit exaggerated but the point is saves out of chances ALONE does not tell you ANYTHING about how good a pitcher is.

Blown saves make a manager look really bad. I hate that because I really like Ozzie and how he is trying to show faith in players like Garland and Schoeneweis and of course Billy. There just comes a time when you have to give up and I think that time is now. I'm just glad Billy didn't somehow get out of the 9th 4-4 and then Adkins or Cotts lose in the 10th or 11th because then Koch's outing would be somewhat eclipsed. When he got 3-1 on Cabrera I just flicked off Koch and told him to f***ing walk him and prove once and for all on national television no less how much he sucks.

Velocity was not the problem. Tom Gordon throws mid nineties like Koch. Tom Gordon also has a hammer of a breaking ball and the ability to get ahead of hitters and PITCH goddammit. I think I've almost gotten over this loss but f*** You Billy Koch if you ever pitch again in a save situation for this team.
