QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 05:17 PM) Im not even sure what you are arguing anymore. Are you trying to suggest Macklemore is hardcore rap? Underground? I mean should you compare him to KRS-ONE? (edit) And I dont think you are right either. A lot of Macklemore's hooks are anthem style, which is pop. If you listen to "I Am Not A Human Being 2" (Lil Wayne's new album) its significantly more focused on the rap/lyrics, than pumping a hook to dance too. Even "Curtains" and "Rich as f***" are substantially grittier. Once again, its personal preference. The fact you like Lupe/Macklemore is reflects that you like a highly polished album. Nothing wrong with that, just a different style. My favorite rap songs are much darker/harder/grittier. I'm suggesting that Macklemore is most definitely a rap artist, or even a hip-hop artist, but definitely not a pop artist. Yes, he has some pop-ish songs, but so do all those other rappers I mentioned, which was my point of mentioning them. Plus, all of those rappers do a handful of songs that feature pop stars. I can't think of a single song Macklemore has done with a pop star.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 05:09 PM) I think Macklemore is a rapper. Its just hes a very pop rapper in a genre that generally disrespects pop. Even on Jay-Z's old school album that won a grammy he remarks about how he wont get respect for the hook on his song "Money Cash Hoes": I know they gone criticize the hook on this song Like I give a f*** I'm just a crook on this song Or Moment of Clarity Music business hate me cause the industry ain't make me Hustlers and boosters embrace me and the music I be making I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars They criticized me for it, yet they all yell "holla" If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be Lyrically Talib Kweli Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense But I did 5 mill' - I ain't been rhyming like Common since When your cents got that much in common And you been hustling since your inception f*** perception. Go with what makes sense Since I know what I'm up against We as rappers must decide what's most important And I can't help the poor if I'm one of them So I got rich and gave back, to me that's the win/win So next time you see the homey and his rims spin Just know my mind is working just like them So this is actually an argument thats been going on way before white/black rap. Macklemore is just the perfect storm to hate for a certain portion of rap fans. Hes poppy and it appears hes being boosted by being white. Eminem is more of a pop artist than Macklemore is. Lil Wayne is more of a pop artist than Macklemore is. I feel like you are calling him a pop artist based purely on him being white, not having typical violence/money lyrics, and not having enough bass in his songs.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) You mean Im stating a fact. Correct me if Im wrong but you are a white person and Macklemore is a white rapper. Thinking that Macklemore is a good rapper has nothing to do with race. No, you are implying that white people love all white rappers, or they love them because they are white. What if I said to a black guy eating at KFC, "Man, black people are crazy about their chicken!!"?? You don't think that sound implies anything other than "That's just a black guy who happens to be eating chicken. It makes sense, it's just a fact." It does.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) Macklemore winning best rap album would be like Kenny G winning best jazz album. Or like Darius Rucker winning a country award....... oh wait, that happened....Guess we should all rage about a BLACK MAN stealing a WHITE MAN'S AWARD!!! Yeeeeee haaaaaw.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) BEST IN YEARS????? This is why people get insane when a guy like Macklemore wins. He put out an okay album, but white people get crazy about how good white rappers are. Hey, look, exactly what I was talking about earlier with everyone discounting him because he is white! You were the one who just said this has nothing to do with race, and now apparently it has something to do with race. Nice.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:32 PM) Because most people respect rappers based on freestyle, rhyming and live performance. Macklemore really hasnt proven himself in any of those categories. Mackelmore has some great hooks on his album, but if Im giving out the best rap album, Im not giving it to the best hooks, Im giving it to the best rhymes. And Macklemores actually rapping/rhyming isnt at the same level as Good Kid/Maad City. I mean I love Dre, but hes not the best rapper either. And the Black Eyed Peas would be the same as when the Fugees one. Its just a square peg in a round hole. And the Fugees werent white. If we are giving out songs based on best rhymes, then Lupe should have a shelf full of Grammys. I thought Good Kid/Maad City was alright. I'm not a big Kendrick Lamar fan, I think he is somehow anointed at the "savior of rap" just because everyone wants a "savior of rap". He's a very good rapper, I just don't like a majority of his songs. There are a lot of good rappers though. As for the live performance aspect, I don't know what your criteria is here, but I saw Macklemore in concert about a year ago, and the dude killed it. Best concert I've ever been to, and head and shoulders above the Lil Wayne concert I got dragged to in like 2009. He also killed it at the VMA's this year, or whatever you want to call that remote performance he did at another location that was shown live at the VMAs. Mack didn't win award for the best rapper, he won for the best rap album, and I think regardless of what you think about him, if you just listen to the CD, none of that freestyle ability or live performance matters. As for his rhyming, yeah, he isn't as fast as Kendrick on most songs, and he isn't as deep as Lupe, and he isn't as funny and clever as Eminem, but his lyrics have ton of meaning and make sense and tell a story, and I'd take that over someone like Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Tyga, etc. who rap fast with idiotic lines to try and be clever when they are not.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Over the course of a season, a guy will typically get 19 more plate appearances than the person he hits in front of. Ok, so about 80 more PA for Avi hitting 3rd vs. 7th then.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) Has anyone here actually heard The Heist? I mean, Macklemore raps. It's a rap album. I guess you could consider it more of a hip hop album, but no more so than say MMLP2, which most people will call a rap album. The Heist was a brilliant album. I mean, Taylor Swift has won for country in the past - it's not what you think of when you think country. Deal with it - the genres are crossing more and more. I've heard The Heist at least 20 times all the way through. It's a fantastic album, one of the best in years. And it's 100% a rap album. I laugh at all the people who call it a pop album just because it got radio play. As if no one realizes Mack's story of being an independent rapper and that somehow this CD and his songs were pushed to the airwaves through a major label. You know you actually HAS a major label that pushes his songs to the radio? Kendrick Lamar. He is more inherently a pop artist if you are going to try and use that as a measuring stick.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) It has nothing to do with race. He just has 0 credibility as a rapper. It would be like the Black Eyed Peas winning. Ok why? And who cares if Black Eyed Peas won if they put out a rap album and it was the one of the best?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:18 PM) I'd agree, just wondering whether he is best suited to hit there now and whether that's best for this roster. He doesn't have the profile to hit 3rd yet. He should be around the 7th spot in a typical lineup, but for the lineup I constructed, I was trying to get him as many PA as I could while getting him to get used to that future role. Does anyone have the numbers on typically how many extra PA you get from batting in one spot in the lineup versus another spot? I would guess the different from the 3rd hole to the 7th hole would be around 40-50 PA?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:51 PM) I dunno, people don't really level that criticism at Eminem, do they? Nah, not so much. Eminem pretty much has a pass because of where he grew up. Mac Miller is kind of in between because he tries to look the part of a gangster and a rapper, but he doesn't have the background that Em has, so it's really kind of a grey area for Mac.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) Even Macklemore wrote an apology to Kendrick. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1721204/m...t-grammys.jhtml Lets be honest, Grammy Awards are for who sells the most to 14 year old girls. He had to. He is going to have to apologize for every rap award he wins. He is in a lose-lose situation every time he is nominated. It's the same reason that when he won at the last awards show (VMAs maybe?), his entire acceptance video was about "the injustices surrounding Trayvon Martin". He has to win back the rap community every time he pisses them off by winning something.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) The guy cleaned house in rap categories and nobody in the rap world would ever consider him to be among the top in that genre. He should have been honored that he was even nominated. But winning all of those awards? Lame. I didn't hear a better CD nomination than his The Heist. The Heist is a fantastic rap album. Him winning best song for Thift Shop was simply based on the popularity of the song. It's a good, but not great song, but my god was it huge in 2013. The performance thing I really have no opinion on because I have no idea what performance they are even judging. Do they say? (I didn't see the awards show). But him winning the best album is completely justified. Every single year someone will complain about who wins a ton of awards, but it just sucks that people are bringing race in to it this time. Either saying he only won because he is white, or saying he should never win because he is white. Even people trying to say he isn't even a rapper, he is a pop artist, which is another way of saying he looks too white to be a rapper.

I see Garcia as being an Alex Rios type guy, which is why I had him in the #3 hole. Offensively he could hit about .280, hit 20 HR, steal 20-30 bags. That's where I feel he is likely to land statistically.

Playing Bioshock: Infinite free off PS+ right now. It's definitely not my type of game, but the environment is so beautiful. That being said, I really have no idea what I am doing or why I am doing it, but I guess I'll just continue to power through since everyone says the ending is so good.

My god, the amount of racism towards Macklemore and Ryan Lewis right now because they won a few rap categories last night at the Grammy's is ridiculous. So many ignorant people who want to keep music segregated. I guess I missed the large uproar last night on Twitter with Darius Rucker won a country music award, huh?

QUOTE (glangon @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:00 AM) I think Robin might do something different with having Paulie as a bench player. I think we'll line up as follows. CF Eaton LF De Aza RF Avi Garcia 1B Abreu DH Dunn 3B Viciedo SS Ramirez C Flowers 2B Beckham Bench C Nieto IF Konerko IF Keppinger OF Danks Playing Tank at 3rd would give another LF back up. I see Gillaspie, Davidson, Leury Garcia, Phegley and Semien all starting in AAA barring trades. I think everyone INCLUDING Paulie expects/hopes Paulie is going to a bench player. I'm pretty sure he said the only way this season would work was if he was in a platoon or bench role.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 01:32 AM) L Eaton R Ramirez L Dunn R Abreu L De Aza/R Viciedo R Garcia L Gillaspie/R Keppinger R Catcher R Beckham I've been obsessed with the idea of alternating handedness lately. In the age of super specialized bullpens, it seems like the way to go. I only agree with handedness if's something you do after you've picked your best 9 players. Like, for instance, I wouldn't bench Viciedo in favor of De Aza simply because De Aza if lefthanded. I give Viciedo all the at-bats he can get to improve at his age. Similar reason to why I put Garcia and Abreu at 3 and 4 because they will get more ABs there. I'm operating under the idea that 2014 is a punt season, and I just want improvement out of players more than I want wins on the field. Not saying whose strategy is better, just elaborating on my choices.

Anyone not putting Dunn in the lineup is absolutely insane. The ONLY hope we have of dumping him at the deadline for a prospect or two is if he is playing everyday and knocking out 25 HR by the deadline. My opening day lineup would be.... 1) Eaton (L) 2) Alexei 3) Garcia 4) Abreu 5) Dunn (L) 6) Viciedo 7) Davidson 8) Nieto (S) 9) Beckham

A bounceback episode for True Detective. I managed to not fall asleep during this one. Shameless was solid, but I still get confused every time I read "Chicago Polytechnic" on everything. They can't be making this mistake every single episode. I guess he just turned down his full ride to MIT and decided to go to some other school that was never mentioned previously?

Like I said in one of these threads, give me Hoffman/Kolek over Alex Jackson and then Reetz in the 2nd. After doing some research, I like what I see out of Reetz. I'd be cool with Turner as well, but I have much more confidence in developing a pitcher. Your browser does not support iframes. While I have no begun to look at options for our 2nd round pick yet, I do like what you've been posting about Reetz. Even without knowing what's available, I think getting Hoffman and then Reetz would be a really great start to the draft. Those could immediately become 2 of our top 3 prospects.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 26, 2014 -> 11:42 AM) Well, House of Cards, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy are probably my 3 favorites. Police investigation shows are fine, but I like to mix in a little political intrigue as well, with Scandal being another example, as well as Hostages (I always liked Dylan McDermott on The Practice before it got too crazy there at the end). Shameless, Homeland, and Sherlock are the big 3 I see missing from your list.
