  1. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 9, 2011 -> 12:48 AM) Nothing says "going for it" like sending your 1st or 2nd best reliever down to AAA. And nothing says "stunting a career" like throwing your 1st RD draft pick into a career in the bullpen before he ever gets a fair shot at starting. Drafting a reliever in the 1st RD is an awful way to draft.
  2. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Jan 9, 2011 -> 02:18 AM) Well I'll say this about Ohman. That guy is very animated. The reliever version of Peavy. He'll be as pissed off as you when he's giving up homers. As long as he doesn't scream and pump his fist and stomp around after a strikeout, I'll be ok with him.
  3. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 8, 2011 -> 07:23 PM) http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=6002831 I agree w/ Coop. Have Sale start for the first month or whatever, then send him straight to AAA to start until/if a starter gets injured/traded
  4. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Jan 8, 2011 -> 02:21 PM) Yuck, what an awful bullpen. The Sox will have to score a ton of runs. How is that an awful bullpen? 2010-2011 Thornton = Thornton Santos Putz > Crain Pena = Pena Williams Linebrink ? Infante (Although I think Infante can't be as bad as Linebrink) Jenks > Carter Now these roles don't line up exactly, being that Thornton is moving to closer (maybe), and other pieces are moving around roles, but I think this bullpen is pretty decent. Last year's bullpen was better, but I don't think we are going to be off by much.
  5. 2 yrs/$4M. I said 2 yrs/$5M, with no chance he makes less than $4M. Yeah....I'm just that good.
  6. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 09:33 PM) 1.Over the last three seasons LH have put up a .223/.303/.386/.689 line against him. I'll take that out of my LOOGY. 2.Threets had TJ surgery in September, and will miss the entire 2011 season. You're now looking at LR-Pena MR-Infante LOGGY-Ohman SU-Crain SU-Santos CL-Thornton Hopefully by May/June, Sale is added, bolstering what should be an already strong back end of the pen. I think it's "LOOGY" with 2 O's. And doesn't Ozzie was 12 pitchers, not 11? I would think Anthony Carter may be added to your pen as well. LR - Pena MR - Infante MR - Carter LOOGY - Ohman SU - Crain SU- Santos CL - Thornton
  7. QUOTE (joeynach @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 09:30 PM) I thought he had like a toe injury or something. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpag...=MLB&id=677 "Threets underwent Tommy John surgery in September and is expected to miss the entire 2011 season. The 29-year-old left-hander tossed 12 1/3 shutout innings with the White Sox this past season."
  8. QUOTE (joeynach @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 09:29 PM) Was hurt Well he may no longer be hurt, but he certainly won't be throwing for a major league team in 2011.
  9. QUOTE (joeynach @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 09:19 PM) Ugh Will Ohman is ok I guess, he owns a career 40% GB%, which is the most important stat for pitchers in our park. The GB% is used to anticipate Fielder Independent Pitching in the Saber community. He Ohman posts that 40% number than his xFIP suggest a 4.24 ERA. Eh OK not great, fine, whatever. Ohman has had 3 season in which he had a Gb% over his career norm, and 3 seasons where he had a Gb% under his career norm. So he is the definition of hit or miss. My question is this. Knowing all this about Ohman, why not just bring back Erik Threets, they are virtually the same pitcher. I know its a small sample size but Threets pitched really well for the sox last year, 55.6 GB %, FIP of 2.84, and xFIP of 3.83. You can have Threets for the league minimum, you probably have to pay Ohman $2M for his services. I dont get it. Threets is missing all of 2011 with injury. Tommy John I think.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 06:47 PM) Every other time he's hit FA, he's wound up on 1 year deals worth less than $1.5 million And relievers are also signing very lucrative 3yr deals this offseason. If he had 2 other options on the table, I'd find it hard to believe he signs for anything less than $2M a year, and maybe the 2nd yr offer from the Sox won him over. Who knows. All I know is that I nailed the Jesse Crain deal right on the head with 3 yrs/$13M. So we'll see!
  11. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 06:37 PM) Lame. We actually had both of you beat in the White Sox offseason thread.
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) Will Ohman has narrowed it down to 3 AL teams. He is a real good strikeout pitcher, who had a good 2010, he just needs to fix that walk issue he has. It appears the Sox may be favored to sign Ohman now. Would be a nice pickup, especially if it means Sale isn't need in the pen any longer, otherwise we would have 3 lefties. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/01/whit...-are-close.html

  14. So where is Soriano going? It appears he doesn't have too many options. I'm sure the Phillies would love to trade Blanton somewhere and pick up Soriano, because ever other team that has made sense appears to be "out of it"
  15. What'd Gorzellany making in 2011? $1M+? Meh. He's cheap, but I'd rather get a bullpen arm. I'd love for the Sox to get Jeff Samardzija with the Cubs kicking most of the money, and use Samardzija in the pen as a long reliever/spot starter with Sale in AAA starting. But most of this has to do with me being a huge Notre Dame fan and being friends with the Samardzija family.
  16. Forgot to mention this, but I had a pretty vivid dream last night about the White Sox. Basically, it was like 2 weeks into the season, and the Sox were pounding the Cubs (I know, the date doesn't match up) like 13-1 or something. Konerko and Dunn were #1 and #2 in HR. I think Dunn had 7, and Paulie had 6, and this was after like 9 or 10 games. I remember Dunn's HR pretty vividly too. He smashed a ball to Left CF and just dropped the bat and trotted immediately. It was awesome. Yeah, I hope I'm less of a dreamer, and more of a prophet. I woke up so happy and then realized there was snow outside. EDIT: Forgot to mention that we had Jim Thome too. Not sure how or why, but Dunn must have been playing LF?
  17. I have been on sports forums since 2004 I believe. I used to be on the 2ksports forums like it was my damn job. I had over 8,000 posts there in like 2 or 3 years, it was sickening...... Anyway, I was just going through some olds threads from 2005-2007 just to see how dumb I was when I was 15-17 years old when it came to baseball. Here are some funny/stupid things I had said. I'm embarrassed..... Dec 23rd, 2006 - The Brandon McCarthy trade..... Dramatic much? lol.
  18. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 03:29 AM) I just find it so hypocritical of those who support Jackson and his 'awesome' stuff when we had another guy that went by the name of Javy Vazquez who used to get chastised by this board like no SP we've had in years. He sported WAR of 3.6, 4.8 and 5.1. Always raked up huge K numbers and had solid peripherals across the board. But all we ever heard was that he was a dickless choker and EVERYBODY wanted him gone. At least my b****ing is consistent. You guys all over the place. Don't lump me in there. I wasn't here for that, and I never had a problem with Vazquez. He was frustrating as hell sometimes, but there was no doubt in my mind he was a very solid pitcher. In fact, I even recall picking Vazquez for my Cy Young darkhorse for 1 or 2 years in a row. I always had faith in him.
  19. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 03:14 AM) And Hudson put up a 2.3 WAR in just 95 innings for, what, 450K. A full season's worth and there's no reason he couldn't sport a 4.0 WAR better. He's got the minor league pedigree and has dazzled in 12 of his 15 career starts. I'm just arguing the point that Jackson actually a bargin, and not being overpaid. And I wonder what a 4.0 WAR in the NL translates to in the AL.
  20. QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:27 AM) You must have missed his 2010 season then. So I take it that means they average the past 2-3 season or something to get these rankings? Makes sense, although his past two seasons of 3.5 and 3.8 WAR are pretty nice.
  21. QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:41 AM) And no matter what Hudson (or Holmberg for that matter) will always just be a crappy NL pitcher to others. It goes both ways, you know. I didn't like this trade initially mostly because of money (which doesn't matter now that we raised our payroll $20-30 million) and because Edwin Jackson has been mediocre at best his entire career save for half a year with Detroit and his few starts with us. If Coop fixed him and we are willing to pay big bucks to fill in the holes we create by not having any cheap prospects, I'm all for this trade. That being said, this will be my last post on the subject. Every post in here saying they are tired of it (me included) is doing nothing more than bumping the thread up for somebody else to maintain the same old tired arguments. In his 4 full seasons in the bigs, his worst season produced a 1.3 WAR, and his last 2 seasons he has produced a 3.5+ WAR. So, if 10.1 WAR ($43.3M) over his 4 seasons in the bigs is "mediocre at best", then your standards are quite impressive.
  22. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 12:28 AM) Well I mean Hudson for Jackson straight up was bad enough IMO, but the fact we had to add a decent SP prospect to a trade that was already heavy in the other team's favour, especially in a system devoid of LHS prospects...that's just rubbing salt in the wound. Ugh. Either way, what's done is done, and I'm optimistic about Jackson's 2011. I just wish it wasn't so expensive and wasn't just a one-year return. Even if he has a good year, is he Type-A material? I doubt it. If he was, it would hurt much less. I also remember when I interviewed for the Jays (pre-2009 draft) they asked me about an amateur pitcher I liked, and my answer was Holmberg. That adds a little sentimental value on my end, admittedly. $8.5M is really pretty cheap for Jackson. Last year, he put up a 3.8 WAR, which is worth about $15M. For comparison sake, Buehrle put up a 3.8 WAR last year, and was making $14M. All Jackson has to do, is put up a WAR of 1.9 next season to earn his contract, and considering he doubled that last year, he is fully capable of accomplishing that. Jackson at $8.5M or whatever he is making is actually a pretty good price, and to be a Type-A, I believe you have to finish in the top 20% in your league. For reference, Bronson Arroyo was considered a Type-A Free Agent, and he put up a 1.7 WAR. So I think the chances of Edwin earning Type-A status is actually pretty likely.
  23. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 09:30 PM) It's still the Holmberg part that bugs me the most, purely out of principle. I totally agree. That's the part of the deal that bothers me too. We didn't get any money in return, AND we had to give up another player. I don't mind Jackson/Hudson swap, but to give up extra parts w/ no salary relief sucks.
