  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 05:41 PM) #3 on MLB.com's list of 3b prospects.
  2. A couple funny little clauses I found for Sox players in Jayson Stark's article today. Will Ohman and Jesse Crain both have clauses stating they will get between $10,000-$25,000 bonuses if they start the All-Star game. lol. Not GET SELECTED to the team, but START the game. Pretty unlikely, but maybe even more unlikely.... Adam Dunn gets an extra $25K if he wins the gold glove. lol. Gold glove for DH I guess.
  3. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 03:24 PM) Brewers ink Fielder to a 1-year, $15.5 million dollar deal. This basically should be a wrap for him as a Brewer. It's going to be very interesting next off-season when Pujols/Fielder [i'm assuming Pujols will] hit the FA market and the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies and Tigers, basically 4 of the top 6 or 7 teams payroll wise the last few years, won't be anywhere in the conversation. No doubt in my mind the Cubs get either Pujols or Fielder next offseason.
  4. QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 02:24 PM) Sox claimed Phil Humber off waivers from Oakland. Well, at least he is coming off the best season of his career.
  5. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 12:04 AM) Sounds good, but I don't think its very likely that St. Louis signs him if he hits free agency. Then they walk away with a handful of prospects and save $6.5M (since they won't pay him once he leaves) + a couple more million they would have spent on those 2 draft picks. Seems like a good plan to me. So you could be talking about a handful of prospects, plus close to $9M saved.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 12:13 AM) They did the Sox one about a week and a half ago. How? They always do it during spring training, where there is something to actually report and record. I assume they will start doing these the first couple days of March.
  7. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 10:35 PM) My mistake, didn't read the Tweet. That said, if they deal Pujols at the deadline, their chances of beating out those other teams is significantly lower. The only way that dealing Pujols at the deadline makes sense for the Cards is if they've already decided to part ways with him. And since he's essentially the second coming of Stan Musial, I'm not sure that they want to go down that road. Well my point is that if they trade him at the deadline, they can get a good collection of young players, and then make a bid to sign him in the offseason still. But if they attempt to sign him in the offseason and lose him, they just get the 2 draft picks. Handful of prospects + resign Albert Pujols or 2 draft picks OR resign Albert Pujols I'd take the first option, but again, this is if they aren't leading the divison/wild card, or are like 3-4 games back. Otherwise, I'd sacrifice a few months of Pujols to protect yourself incase he doesn't resign.
  8. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 10:23 PM) They also risk alienating him by doing that. Unless Pujols has indicated that he wants to test the FA market, they should try to work something out before the season begins. Isn't that what "setting a deadline" does? He gave them a deadline of ST to get a deal done, or else he is testing the free agent market.
  9. If the Cards were smart, they would definitely shop Pujols at the deadline. They would probably get more back than they would for the 2 draft picks, and especially if Cincinnati and Milwaukee are ahead of them in the divison.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) .781 OPS and was repeating High-A. Not a good contact rate, good walk rate, a little bit of power...he looks like a marginal prospect, perhaps a guy that could develop into a starter or left handed platoon mate at some point down the road, but hardly anything exciting. I forget where I just saw this, but some scout said he is a 60 power, 65 arm, and 55 speed. Those are pretty good ratings. They just said he needs to work on his contact skills. He was the 7th best prospect in the Nats system, a system that included Strasburg, Storen, and other pretty legit players.
  11. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 03:31 PM) Not really. Only 87 of Burgess' 529 PAs last year came in AA. I doubt the other two prospects are much of anything. You don't gut your farm for Tom Gorzelanny. Ok, fine, he put up pretty impressive numbers are A+ and AA last year as a 21-year-old. Guy looks legit.
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 03:11 PM) Traded to the Nationals for 3 prospects Only have seen 1 name the Cubs are getting back, but it's 22-year-old lefty OF Michael Burgess who put up some pretty impressive numbers in AA. I think the Cubs are going to win big in this deal.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 16, 2011 -> 01:44 PM) It's not really a steal, they're just buying out his arbitration years. They might save a million or two overall compared to what he would have gotten if he'd gone to Arb all 3 years. Oh, I didn't realize they were buying out arb years. But still, I'd bet they still save a pretty penny on this. Ryan Howard was being offered $16M in ARB (He wanted $18M) after his 2008 season in which he put up a 3.1 WAR. I'd bet this deal saves them at least $10M.
  14. Damn, that's a REAL good price for a guy who has put up a 4.0, 4.6, and 7.4 WAR the last 3 years, and is only 27. I bet the Reds would have liked to sign him for 4 or 5 years, but at less than $13M a year, that's a steal.
  15. I thought it was pretty awesome. Obviously not going to be as "smart" as Daily Show and Colbert Report, but I really enjoyed it. Only thing I found not funny was the retired NFL stars escaping. That was a little overdone, but the NBA rule changes, Shaq having heart attack, Meth olympics, Pujols keys to city, and everything else was really funny in my opinion. Maybe I'm the only one, but I've been a huge fan of The Onion and their website for years now. Their most recent "strong side/weak side" on Cam Newton was amazing. http://www.onionsportsnetwork.com/articles/cam-newton,18754/
  16. I drive a '95 Civic, but I am trying to sell it and find a used Acura TL or Civic/Accord a little newer.
  17. Completely off topic, but Buster Olney's blog reminded me of this. How sweet would it be if Nick Swisher never existed, and we had Gio Gonzalez back? We would have a pretty awesome rotation of Peavy-Buehrle-Danks-Jackson-Floyd-Gio. That's 6 very solid starters.
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 03:33 AM) Well, you also have to be capable of putting up a 40/40 season or throwing 97 with a sharp slider...because, uhh, there have been a few other Sorianos. (understands playful nature of quoted post) Ok, I should have specified "and make the major leagues" because of all those Sorianos, only 2 are in the bigs.
  19. I think I'm going to change my last name to Soriano. Apparently teams will throw insane amount of money at you!
  20. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 04:41 PM) Btw, didn't Oz already say Dunn is batting 3rd? No idea, but I figured that Ozzie loved the R-L-R so much that he would want our big 3 hitters aligned that way. I also figured I'd put Rios and his speed/base stealing ability in front of Dunn and Konerko. Doesn't mean that Rios couldn't hit 2nd, with Dunn in the 3 hole I guess.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 08:47 AM) He doesn't belong there. Yeah exactly. He doesn't really have any position on the team yet. I am in the group that thinks he needs to trim down (obviously), and try a corner OF spot. If he can just be better than Quentin defensively, his bat will carry him.
  22. QUOTE (Big Daddy Kool @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 03:57 PM) From Cowley's twitter feed: Gordon said that Alexei looked bigger and definitely added some muscle - J.J. Walker no more. Couldn't really tell from the video since he was wearing baggy clothes, but his arms did seem a little bigger.
  23. Jeter's catch in fair ground where he didn't feel like sliding and instead ran into the seats better not have been on that list, but being that it's Jeter, it was probably like #2 on the list. The only great play I've ever seen him make was the flip to Posada, and I'd still put Wise, Buehrle, and Iguchi all better than that. It's just the stage that he did it on that made it so much better.
  24. QUOTE (3E8 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 06:37 PM) They did, but that was with Konerko and Dunn both posting the highest WAR either of them have in the past five years. My conservative estimate for them is 2.5 for PK and 3 for Dunn (looking at the most recent seasons, this is perfectly reasonable). Even being optimistic for both, say 3.5 wins apiece, in your 14 WAR prediction you'd have to get 7 wins from AJ/Morel/Crain/Ohman. That's a bit unrealistic. I had Dunn at 4 WAR, Konerko at 3, Morel at 2.5, AJ at 2, Crain at 1.5, and Ohman at 1. That's 14 WAR. 2.5 WAR may seem high for Morel, but if his defense is as good as advertised, then he could do it, although I agree that 2.5 is still pretty optimistic.
