Nationals broke deal on Dunn/Jackson
QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:41 AM) And no matter what Hudson (or Holmberg for that matter) will always just be a crappy NL pitcher to others. It goes both ways, you know. I didn't like this trade initially mostly because of money (which doesn't matter now that we raised our payroll $20-30 million) and because Edwin Jackson has been mediocre at best his entire career save for half a year with Detroit and his few starts with us. If Coop fixed him and we are willing to pay big bucks to fill in the holes we create by not having any cheap prospects, I'm all for this trade. That being said, this will be my last post on the subject. Every post in here saying they are tired of it (me included) is doing nothing more than bumping the thread up for somebody else to maintain the same old tired arguments. In his 4 full seasons in the bigs, his worst season produced a 1.3 WAR, and his last 2 seasons he has produced a 3.5+ WAR. So, if 10.1 WAR ($43.3M) over his 4 seasons in the bigs is "mediocre at best", then your standards are quite impressive.

Rafael Soriano signs with Yankees
QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 12:28 AM) Well I mean Hudson for Jackson straight up was bad enough IMO, but the fact we had to add a decent SP prospect to a trade that was already heavy in the other team's favour, especially in a system devoid of LHS prospects...that's just rubbing salt in the wound. Ugh. Either way, what's done is done, and I'm optimistic about Jackson's 2011. I just wish it wasn't so expensive and wasn't just a one-year return. Even if he has a good year, is he Type-A material? I doubt it. If he was, it would hurt much less. I also remember when I interviewed for the Jays (pre-2009 draft) they asked me about an amateur pitcher I liked, and my answer was Holmberg. That adds a little sentimental value on my end, admittedly. $8.5M is really pretty cheap for Jackson. Last year, he put up a 3.8 WAR, which is worth about $15M. For comparison sake, Buehrle put up a 3.8 WAR last year, and was making $14M. All Jackson has to do, is put up a WAR of 1.9 next season to earn his contract, and considering he doubled that last year, he is fully capable of accomplishing that. Jackson at $8.5M or whatever he is making is actually a pretty good price, and to be a Type-A, I believe you have to finish in the top 20% in your league. For reference, Bronson Arroyo was considered a Type-A Free Agent, and he put up a 1.7 WAR. So I think the chances of Edwin earning Type-A status is actually pretty likely.

Rafael Soriano signs with Yankees
QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 09:30 PM) It's still the Holmberg part that bugs me the most, purely out of principle. I totally agree. That's the part of the deal that bothers me too. We didn't get any money in return, AND we had to give up another player. I don't mind Jackson/Hudson swap, but to give up extra parts w/ no salary relief sucks.

Nationals broke deal on Dunn/Jackson
I hate this debate too. No matter if Jackson wins the Cy Young next year, people will still hate the trade simply because it means we don't have that extra 5 years of Hudson. In some people's minds, Jackson will never be able to produce well enough to justify 5 years of decent pitching in the National League. I feel like even if we traded Hudson for Roy Halladay, people would still complain because Hudson will have 5 years of control. It's just a no-win battle.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
Red Sox claim Max Ramirez from Rangers, and DFA Matt Fox. I wouldn't mind if the Sox took a flyer on him. Couldn't hurt, and he had at least decent peripherals at AAA for the Twins last year.... http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=fox---001mat

Trivia Q Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) My guess for Knight's question would be Harold Baines. I know he played for the A's early in the 90s, is a well known player for the Sox, and would have been batting 2nd or 3rdd in 1991 because he was a damn good hitter. EDIT: Or perhaps 4th Just looked up the answer, and you are right, it was Baines. Canseco batted 3rd, but flew out with Rickey on 2nd base. Then Baines came up hitting 4th, and Rickey stole 3B for the record.

Do the sox have interest in Andruw Jones?
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 03:12 AM) We should go ahead and sign Soriano then, oh wait, the Sox can't afford it. I think De AZA will do a fine job as a 4th OF. Well, that's why I said "decent reliever" and not Soriano. Soriano and Jones are not equals. Soriano is very good, and will cost premium. Jones, however, is pretty decent, and shouldn't cost more than $2-$3M. And he put up almost a 2 WAR in only 107 games, which is worth about $7.4M on the market. A 2 WAR is something De Aza has never come close to, and probably won't ever achieve in his career. Same for Lillibridge. Jones can play all 3 OF positions, and play them well, while offering above average speed and good power. De Aza is below average defensively, with above average speed, and a below average bat. Jones is vastly superior, and even if he costs $2M-$3M, I think he is worth it. ALLLLLLL of this being said, I want a good reliever over everything, so if it's one or the other, I'll take the reliever, but I'd really like to have Jones back.

Do the sox have interest in Andruw Jones?
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 03:03 AM) We have two guys who make minimum in De Aza and Lillibridge. .................... And Infante/Carter would make the minimum too, doesn't mean we shouldn't try and find a decent reliever on the market. I don't see your point, as Jones is much better than both.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 01:01 AM) Cubs may or may not be close to landing Garza. According to Dave Kaplan though. Didn't he have some dumb rumor like a month ago that he was sure about. Like some sort of Fukudome swap I think.

Trivia Q Thread
QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 01:07 AM) What Ex-Sox player was at bat when Rickey Henderson stole a base to pass Lou Brock for 1st all time? Had to look up the year he did it so I could get some sort of idea. 1991, I would say.....Jose Canseco? Not sure if Jose was a great player by then since this person was probably batting 2nd, 3rd, or 4th since Rickey was on-base, and being that he stole 3B, it's possible that an at-bat happened in-between, so I am guessing it was a 3rd or 4th hitter, and if Canseco was good by then, then he would be the perfect candidate.

Do the sox have interest in Andruw Jones?
I sure hope so. Jones is more than qualified to be a 4th OF on many teams. We would be much better with Jones over De Aza.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 4, 2011 -> 04:08 PM) Ran through the CAIRO 0.3 projections today. White Sox position players: 23.2 White Sox pitchers: 18.9 Total: 42.1 (90.1 wins) Highest position player: Adam Dunn (4.4) Highest pitcher: John Danks (3.7) Ok, now take out Infante/Carter or whoever you have as the worst bullpen arm, and replace him with Soriano. What does that give us? 92 wins? Maybe 93?

Trivia Q Thread
By the way, do you guys ever take part in Jayson Stark's trivia on Twitter? I am always surprisingly awesome at his trivia. I never realize how much I pay attention/remember until I answer his trivia. His last one "Who are the 2 active pitchers who have 5 200+ strikeout seasons" I got it in about 2-3 seconds with the first 2 names that popped into my head. Made me happy. I have answered all 3 of his trivia correct today, although the 1st and 3rd questions were my first guesses, the 2nd question he asked did take me until my 3rd guess to get it right.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 4, 2011 -> 02:52 PM) Is that a trick question? Frank Thomas has the second most home runs by a player whose last name starts with a "T", behind Jim Thome. You are so right. It is in a baseball trivia book of mine, and although it was printed in 2006 or so, Thome definitely had more by then than the person behind Frank Thomas had.... Ok then..... Who ranks 3rd behind White Sox 1B/DH Frank Thomas in most HR by a player who's last name starts with "T". Damn trivia book.

Bulls success = White Sox payroll?
QUOTE (Wanne @ Jan 4, 2011 -> 03:03 PM) speaking of money...does anybody know what kind of money the Sox got for Peavy's injury?...or is it even settled yet (until he comes back)? Are you talking about insurance on Peavy? Because I heard something like that too. Like, we are spending the money we saved from Peavy on our payroll right now.

Rafael Soriano signs with Yankees
QUOTE (credescrew24 @ Jan 3, 2011 -> 05:17 PM) Take this for what it's worth but recently I was out at the mall here in socal and ran into the halos GM Tony Regans and had a chance to talk to him for a bit...he showed luv to sox fans and saw my sox tattoo on my leg and be for he left I asked for anyinside info on rumblings for the offseason. Instantly he a huge smile and said that we were guna be getting someone else good soon...??? What do u guys think could it be soriano? Let's hope another AL gm knows something in the works haha... Well, you've certainly got me interested. I wonder if it's a former Angel's player that has shown interest in the Sox. Vlad Guerrero to RF? lol. I wonder who it could be. Maybe it could be Beltre, since the Angels were interested in Beltre, I wonder if his agent maybe said the White Sox were the favorite, and then the Angels backed off.
