  1. I mean he got 2 years guaranteed so that was tongue and cheek. In a year where the median era was under 4, if a veteran pitcher had a 5 era and then stunk it up in both the rotation and the pen the next year, he generally would be close to out of baseball.
  2. He had a 5.00 era last year. He is slow start from the pen and 12 months from being on a spring training invite. The alleged impact from the bamtech windfall sure has changed the market. If everyone was rolling in the dough I can't see 25-30 million in extra revenue this season changing things this much.
  3. In 2022 most metrics have Swanson as the best SS on the planet. And Tim as one of the worst amongst SS with over 300 PA. They had similar defensive seasons in '18 and '19. I think almost everyone involved in baseball who does big time research like you understands they are not "pretty close" in defensive ability. ---------- Side note: This is the time of the offseason where you could theoretically trade veterans for inexpensive pre-arb players (to fill needs) and then magically sign a veteran replacement (that your trade partner was just oddly not interested in signing). So I think you get lots of Sox internet willing to hypothetically trade guys that have positive value. It isn't a knock on Liam, Tim or even Lucas and their value in general. It is fantasy baseball strategy at best and really requires a specific unique situation and trade partner for it to ever even remotely work. This disease will go away once all of the free agents find homes and then almost no one here will advocate dealing TA.
  4. You can see how people defend him here, especially the part-time Sox internet personalities. So I'm not surprised that the full time pros treat him similarly. It is honestly a decent life lesson. Being affable and unassuming can take you a long way in this world and even more so: it gives you longevity. No clue if Rick has given the blogger types scoops over the years or if it is just that he has been kind to them in passing (he has been great anytime I've ran into him)... but they all, uniformly love the guy. They will throw a little dig in print at an individual mistake (Leury) thinking it shows they are fair and balanced, but they aren't fooling anyone. If something bad happens: Jerry Sucks If something good happens: Rick Hahn did it again dancing meme
  5. Sell and pray this offseason doesn't become the new norm.
  6. My guess is his "like" has more to do more with guys not named TA getting paid than it does Tim hearing rumors that he is being shopped. Hell, I imagine he has approached the Sox about an extension and would love to get dealt if it meant an increased chance in him getting a new deal. Tim took the guaranteed, set-for-life money. But there was zero chance he would be content the second he outplayed said contract. That is one downside to these deals from the club's perspective, even when they work.
  7. It's all relative but the Cubs did something similar for almost double the money and the Sox just gave Clevinger more, likely because of his upside/lottery chances.
  8. Keep grinding, the organization appreciates your research. Also, the likelyhood that Gallo returns to form appears to be a long shot based on 1/10. Because if he were the same defender and hitter he was at his peak, he would be looking at a massive deal. At 1/10 in his age 29 season he is a lottery ticket. You can be in favor of that dice roll without being certain that he is going to bounce back. Because the alternative for 1/10 is.....
  9. The general mood of Sox internet was positive last night when the MLB The Show generation was online. Then early this morning it turned to sour when the crotchety old men awoke to the news. Now it is swinging back as younger people log back on. Fascinating. If my budget is 12 million and I can't go longer than 1 year... why not? If you want to just argue Jerry should spend more that is fine. Don't get it twisted, everyone here is with you. I'd like to hear from the people that prefer moves that are comparable in length and/or spend. For me, with these constraints it is a Gallo dice roll or trading for a pre-arb option. You can't just go with Eloy, Robert and Colas. The high end for games played would be 400 amongst those three. Need a 4th real option.
  10. Soxtalk on 4 WAR players from 2021 bouncing back: Tim Anderson ? Lucas Giolito ? Yoan Moncada ? Swamp Donkey Joe Gallo ?
  11. Yes. If you believe enough in the player to buy the lottery ticket, why not try and keep some control in the event your number comes up? I understand why the player wouldn't want the options, but I don't understand why you or the team wouldn't want them. In the event he returns to form, I'm fairly confident that '24 at 1/18 wouldn't be "appalling".
  12. Doesn't the fact that the Dodgers were interested like 5 months ago make him slightly intriguing? I'm just excited to have more than one actual outfielder.
  13. This deal makes sense for Bogaerts if it is structured so there isn't much money due to him at the backend. When Xander is 38 the only thing in the world that he can't buy is control of his destiny. Hopefully he got 4/50 or something for that final stretch, so he has some flexibility in the event he is performing at either extreme end of the spectrum.
  14. #1 Why is there ambiguity on whether or not this is real info? What Herbie read was plain as day. So now that he is back-tracking it can only be that someone impersonated someone in his group chat (feels unlikely) and he was duped, that's it. Or of course, that isn't "someone who should know", it is someone that acts like they "could know" when they are speculating... and both this asshole and Herbie can suck a bag of dicks. #2 Gallo is a legitimate OF so this is an upgrade. He is also a major dice roll, which I'm OK with due to the majority of our core being kind of in a make it or break it year. Super unpopular taek but I'm not certain the Sox should be adding any long term contracts this offseason. #3 If we are Gallo's best choice I really hope we can tempt him to sign a team option or two. Even if they are at huge money. Like for example, if it is 1/10, then we also get a club option for '24 at 18mm and 25' at 25mm.
  15. Hahn threatens to trade your favorite player. Hahn can't trade your favorite player because they have little to no value. Hahn stands pat, adds nothing and hopes you are happy because he didn't trade your favorite player.
  16. When the Players Union (or I should say their agents) chose to take only a mild raise for pre-arb players, they really paved the way for the stars of the game to make insane money and clubs to fill out their roster with under control youth. Wonder when we will get that memo?
  17. Even when he sells you know it will be to a large group with a board that will run it like a business. Zero chance we get the billionaire fan who treats it like his toy and/or path to celebrity. Obviously, I'll still take the Obama/Star Wars group backed by one of these Chicago funds that have bought Euro soccer clubs.... but we will still be very pragmatic and measured.
  18. Every team in baseball could use Hendricks, but who would want to pay for him and what would they be willing to give up? The more I think about it, I think the return would have to be an AAAA player(s) that is blocked or at least partially blocked. At this point in the offseason I'm not sure why the Sox would be motivated to swap for a 2B/RF that is mildly better or mildly more cost effective than what is available. The need to move Liam for a pure salary dump doesn't (or at least shouldn't) make as much sense now that they just had 12 million to burn on Clevinger. The acquiring club isn't going to blow a hole in their lineup (Lux, Lowe) to get a reliever that despite being paid blow market value, still isn't free; and while the RP market is hot and/or inflated right now, there are still several above average options available and a few that would have a feasible chance at performing similarly to Liam. Here are possible matches, not saying I'd do any of these in particular, not saying any are a clear upgrade over Sosa/Yolbert and not saying these are balanced one for one trades, just throwing out possible matches (please feel free to add more): Mariners: Kelenic, Trammell Padres: Rosario Dodgers: Busch, Loloutman, Vargas Marlins: Edwards, Groshans
  19. If this happens it better be for a second basemen. I can swallow it because there are none. If it is for a corner outfielder when several are available for only money, in many cases with only a short term commitment required....
  20. I bet Jose wanted that extension before last season. When he didn't get it I think that frustrated him and when he delivered again last year and didn't necessarily need them, he was done with the Sox.
  21. Agreed. If Grandal were on another team, we would be clamoring to acquire him in the hope he bounces back. Yaz has been so, so, so unbelievably good over the past decade you have to get him to June and hope he reverts to form. At that point if it is a repeat of '22 you can safely cut bait and go with Sevy/Perez.
  22. I'd take him as a DH. I wouldn't want him as anything more than a 5th OF though. We have flyball pitchers, we need to field a competent OF in 2023. I'd take either of the FA lottery tickets that can catch the ball (Gallo, Bellinger) over Jesse if it meant he was playing 150 games in LF.
  23. It was a fireable offense. Our beat writers not burying Hahn on it was shameful. Not surprised the front office and/or friends of the front office are now blaming Jerry. No matter how much you hate JR there is no way he instructs you to let Los walk free if you tell him there is no way he takes the QO. The idea that every dumb move this front office makes was because their hands were tied is getting tiresome.
  24. The chances that Jose is older than he claims is significant. The fact that he started playing pro ball at 17 or that "people were scouting him" is definitely not proof that his age is correct. At the very least it doesn't qualify as a crackpot theory or deserve the meme treatment.
