4/8/11 - Sox vs. Rays - 7:10 (WCIU)
whtsoxfan replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in 2011 Season in Review
Stats so far Sox have led EVERY game thus far but are only 4-3 Sox also lead MLB in errors -
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:07 PM) BNightengale Bob Nightengale #mlb #Twins Tough break for Twins 2B Nishioka, who reportedly suffers broken leg. on Nick Swisher's hard slide, which was clean, Twins say. http://bullpen-blog.com/?p=698

Don't know if Grey is the answer either. His numbers AREN'T impressive. But, I like the decision to see what Grey's got, since he's got MLB experience. Adding a long reliever/spot starter could be an ongoing issue for the 1st half of 2011, IMHO. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8375

Carlos Quentin

Adam Dunn had emergency appendectomy last night.

Credit the guy for his loyalty but that's just crazy. At least let the stitches heal for Chrissake. The bats are hot right now and he's a needed piece to this team for the entire year. Rushing Peavy back wasn't a good idea either. -
One bad inning, otherwise total domination! The bats are on fire. 23 runs in 2 games. None hotter than Carlos Quentin, 7 RBIs in 2 games. I like the lineup Ozzie, keep it.

Can't tell anything from one game but, wow, that's a lot of excitement for 9 innings of BB. Nothing like those first few games of the season for weirdness. Dunn will be hitting bombs and Ohman will be giving them up, that I do know.
-
Adam Dunn has averaged 40 homers and 100 RBI's every year since 2002 playing in large ballparks. Yes, he'll strike out but he'll also walk alot making pitchers work much like Paulie does. Signing Dunn makes the Sox much, much better.

Looks like Freddy Garcia made the Yankees rotation http://yankeesmagazine.wordpress.com/2011/...rting-rotation/

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) Because eating Teahen's money flat out doesn't make this team better. What player out there available for the league minimum will give you more? In my opinion, the White Sox have better options for utility: Deaza, also sent down, is a lefty, just like Teahen, but adds a speed dimension (base stealer, pinch runner) , better outfielder, and comparable hitting (better BA, similiar OBP, similiar RBIs). Jordan Danks, another lefty, had an impressive spring, as well.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 04:29 PM) Depends on how he hits. If he hits like he did in his limited time last season, you're right, nowhere. Let's face it: Teahen's on the roster for one reason and one reason only: HIS CONTRACT ($3.75 million/yr). If Kenny could trade Teahen, he would. My thinking is if the White Sox can pay Manny Ramirez $3 Million, to rent him for a month, why can't they eat some of Teahen's money? After all, isn't it about putting the BEST team on the field?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 04:35 PM) As of today, considering the players who are still in camp, Teahen is anywhere from the 7th to 10th best hitter, depending upon how you view Pierre, Morel, and Pierzynski. He just doesn't play very good defense at any position, which is why he's a bench player who plays sporadically instead of having a set position. So to answer your question, Teahen is a better option than pretty much everybody in camp for a utility position. At which position is Mark Teahen, the White Sox's best utility option?
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 08:57 AM) Frankly, that would be a stupid decision. If we cut him we still pay him so what would we be gaining. He's still a pretty decent utility guy. Obviously not at what he's making but unless some team is willing to take him off our hands he's still a better option off the bench than anyone else we have in camp. Which position Teahen is a better utility option than anyone in camp?

QUOTE (YASNY @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 11:09 AM) Humper? What do you know that we don't know? My bad typo HUMBER..... you get the point Geeze!
-
And Bobby Jenks was a washout when he was with the Angels. Humper deserves a chance at least the White Sox thinks so...
-
WS will only need Humber to start for the 1st 4-5 weeks. If he pitches well, that's a bonus, and he'll become the WS' long reliever.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) Cuts... De Aza, Flowers, Bruney, McPherson, Gray, Lindsay, Kinney, Infante and Danks. Down to 29, and that includes Peavy and Viciedo. So they're down to 27. With Lucy just there to be a 3rd catcher, it's really just down to Lillibridge or Milledge. I think Humber is the 5th starter, and Marquez will be in the pen. Too bad, I don't see Teahen's name among the cuts.
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 11:03 AM) Now can he go 4-for-4 and allow Milledge and Humber to make the team? Be careful what you wish for. There's a reason why Milledge is on a different team every year.
-
Matt Thornton has been a rock for this team since the Sox got him from the Mariners. He deserves the opportunity. Even Mariano Rivera had to toil as a setup man to John Wetteland before he got his shot.
-
I believe Milledge is a non-rostered invitee. He's looked good so far, so has McPhearson, who's another non-rostered player. Most likely these two get released early so they can sign elsewhere. If Quentin gets off to a slow start, I look for Viciedo to get a starting shot at RF. Danks, Gartrell and Flowers are another year away IMO. Like it or not, Vizquel, Castro, Teahen and Lillibridge comprise the bench unless they carry only 6 relievers.
-
Viciedo, Flowers and Danks are hitting the cover off the ball but it is EARLY spring training pitching. These guys most likely are still a season away and better off playing everyday. Visquel, Castro and Teahen are locks due to contract dollars. Lillibridge makes the most sense for last reserve role due to his versatility. McPherson and Milledge will get another look by another team when released. De Aza, Lucy, Retherford, etc are destined for another year in the minors.
-
Omar Vizquel. That was decided before ST. Lillibridge for back-up infield and pinch runner. Teahen because he is under contract for 2 years That leaves two spots that are open. I like Danks and Viciedo because of their potential upside. They would be a minor upgrade over Kotsay and Andruw Jones, IMO. Milledge is a better overall player and probably has a better shot than either Danks or Viciedo, but I like Danks left hand bat and Viciedo's is a better hitter than Milledge will ever be right now.

Sox to go with four man rotation to start the season?
whtsoxfan replied to TheChrisSamsa's topic in Pale Hose Talk
however we need the starters to produce. Remember last year, when most of us thought we were loaded with quality starters? Three of them disappointed IMO. Buehrle 13-13, Floyd 10-13, Jackson 10-12. Forget Peavy, he's a luxury. He may not be ready to contribute for a whole year. These are the guys that need to contribute in order to go all the way. Our bullpen should be very solid.
