White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 30, 2010 -> 01:40 AM) Go read Passon's article on Yahoo. Manny is quite a bum. Great line in the article: Business must be good for White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf to flush $4.3 million down the toilet. He'll earn around $3.5 million of that in performance alone if he hits like he did with LA this year. This isn't necessarily a bad move financially.

White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 11:45 PM) The AP story I just read said we still may have to give up a player or two as well as pay several million dollars. WTF. I'm against bringing him in, but if we are, no sense dwelling on what's done. Hopefully he can change our mojo of late and we'll play better on this road trip. He has a chance to start anew with us for this month. Hopefully it'll just be the next two months in a Sox uniform and that's it. This taken from the AP story: "The dreadlocked outfielder is batting .311 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 66 games in 2010." That doesn't sound like a savior to me. His .915 OPS would be 2nd on this team right now, behind only Paul Konerko. Maybe not a savior, but a big part of this team in the last month.

Manny is a 0.9 WAR upgrade over the other White Sox DHs, if given the same number of PAs over the final month. http://pinetarandpocketprotectors.wordpres...act-in-chicago/

I almost want to buy a Manny Ramirez Sox shirt from MLB.com. But knowing that it will only be "cool" for a month, IDK...

08/29/10 - Yankees(Nova) Vs Sox(Floyd)
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) I'm fine with Omar returning next season, but by no means should it be as a starting player. You've seen some of the issues with making him your starting 3b when you have to play Lillibridge at 3b against C.C. I'm not if he's going to play there full-time.

08/29/10 - Yankees(Nova) Vs Sox(Floyd)
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 03:16 PM) Read the end of the thread where I was ripping him for using that ridiculously large bat and his K to walk ratio in his career. You'd have thought I was defending Wise or Kotsay. Who the hell cares what kind of bat he uses? That's a hitter's preference. And nobody said he was a great hitter, you don't judge a hitter's ability based on BB/K ratio, that's not the end all be all whatsoever.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) Teahen was a hero in the game thread last night. I was getting slammed to the ground for daring to say he's a very very mediocre to bad hitter. He of the large bat. You know this how...?

8/28 Gamethread - Danks v. Yank$;
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 02:21 AM) That may be why he has only two walks in all those plate appearances, right. His career walks to strikeouts are as bad as anybody in baseball. How do you account for his lousy walk to strikeout ratio last year. He looks like a clown up there using that big bat. He took a decent number of walks in all those at bats last year?? For a non power guy?? And the point of my post was he had no chance in hell to get a hit off a good closer. None. Oh wait, he was 1-for-7 against him coming in. He had a slight prayer to get a hit. Rivera's not just any regular closer though. Expecting him to hit a game-tying home run against Rivera isn't exactly realistic.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 02:05 AM) We can agree to disagree. That bat is too f***ing big for a guy like Teahen. And how come all his supporters won't comment on those stats I provided about how his strikeout to walk ratio is about as bad as it gets? The guy is a horrible fielder and a crummy hitter. He's hitting .364 since he's come back, that's probably why he has 2 walks in that time. When you're getting base hits, you will walk less. Teahen has a 10.4% BB% this year, that's above average. He's not a crummy hitter, he's a very average hitter. On this team, that has value since we lack good left handed hitters.

8/28 Gamethread - Danks v. Yank$;
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 01:24 AM) Why don't you read my posts closer to get the points I'm trying to make? I'm not going to defend myself, too much energy involved tonight after a s***ty loss. The fact that you bring up Teahen uses too big of a bat makes me scratch my head. That shouldn't be the point. In fact, a bigger, heavier bat helps him make harder contact. Are you trying to say Mark Teahen isn't strong enough? He's strong enough, the guy's body looks disproportionate, he has upper body strength. In this case, you're trying to get more energy into your swing, so the heavier the mass of the bat, the more likely you are going to get more kinetic energy since KE = 1/2(mass)(velocity)^2. Yes, the velocity, or bat speed, is far more important since it is squared, but I think we've gone over the fact that Teahen isn't weak (or weak looking). Yes, I understand that bat speed comes from your entire body, not just your upper body and from a power perspective, Teahen is an average power hitter. But to say he should use a lighter bat probably won't even help him. Besides, Teahen's hitting .364 with a 1.006 OPS ever since he's come back from the DL. He's been hitting well lately.

August White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 28, 2010 -> 02:41 PM) From Peter Gammons' twitter..... pgammo One club's defensive metrics has Alexei Ramirez "far and away" the best defensive SS in AL this season. Every defensive metric alive has Alexei as the best defensive SS in the AL, if not in all of baseball.

8/28 Gamethread - Danks v. Yank$;
How can you blame Teahen for not getting a hit off Rivera? Seriously...how? Left handed hitters hit .198 off of Rivera throughout his career. It doesn't matter who is hitting, more likely than not, a left handed hitter will fail to get a hit 80% of the time when they face Rivera. And anybody who fails more than 80% at getting hits is a bad hitter. So Mark Teahen is not alone and you can't say he f***ed up because he couldn't get a hit off of one of the best closers of all time. You can hate on Mark Teahen, he's not a great player by any means, but saying he sucks because he can't get a hit off of Rivera is unfair.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 28, 2010 -> 08:52 PM) Have yourself a game Andruw! I think I am the only one still watching, but when I finally get a game on TV here at school, I am going to watch it all the way! It's like he thinks he's facing Javier Vazquez or something. The mere presence of Javy anywhere near him will make him exponentially better.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 28, 2010 -> 06:52 PM) The sad thing is, I'd actually just finished typing a post saying that Johnny had thrown some solid pitches this game...those first 2 pitches to Thames were really, really good. He's struck out a ton of guys already, but the mistake pitches...the walks...ugh...there's got to be a mental/focus thing here. Yeah, he's had the put-away pitch, but he's been f***ing around after getting ahead and made three really bad pitches. It's just one of those starts I guess.
