Idea: Trade Jackson for Joba
There really is no point in freeing up money when we don't need anymore pieces on the team besides a possible 5th starter and a better 4th outfielder.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (TomPickle @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 06:34 PM) Royals signed Jeff Francis to a 1 year $2 million contract. He seems like the type of guy that's going to dominate the Sox for no reason. Probably because he has a good change up, has good control, and is left handed.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 01:34 PM) lol. Yeah, well, Sabermetrics is your god. It's what you turn to when you need answers in your every day life. 'How do I go about getting this girl'? Simple: 'Just combine a combination of wOBA, WAR and WPA and by george you've got it!' You have no idea how well that combination works. Every time, every time.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) Yeah but those two aren't really human. They're more like androids. I have to figure out how to leave the emotion out of it. That's become my problem here and in every day life, actually. Then start becoming an android. Go open up Excel and stare at numbers all day. Trust me, it will make you less human.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 11:56 AM) Out of curiosity, how many wins did you calculate between Mauer/Morneau? 6.2 for Mauer, 4.4 for Morneau. I just ran Thome through. The projections like him for a lot of PAs. Thing is, I don't think he's gonna get more PAs than he did last year. So I have him at 328 PAs, 87 games with a .369 wOBA. The wOBA number I did not come up with, that's the average between the three projection systems I have at my disposal. So the combined projection systems have Thome at 1.5 wins. That puts the Twins' position players at 26.8 WAR. Pitchers at 16.4. They're at 43.1 right now, the Sox are at 42.7. I haven't ran the Tigers through yet, but I doubt it's higher than the Sox and Twins.

Big Jim back with Twinx
As of yesterday, before the Thome signing, the combined projections I calculated (CAIRO, Bill James, Fan Projections) had the Twins at 90.1 wins. They had the Sox at 90.7. I think this move probably puts the Twins ahead in terms of projected wins based on WAR. Thome was worth 3.6 wins last year. I really doubt he does that again, but still, I think he'll be good for at least 1.5.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 11:37 AM) Confirmed? By whom? And what does that have to do with this thread? I think he's trying to say Sale will be useful against all the Twins left handed batters late in games in the bullpen.

I'm also not so sure that Grant Balfour likes our team. He had that altercation with OC in the ALDS back in 08. Pretty sure Ozzie doesn't like him either and vice versa.

QUOTE (scotty22hotty @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 11:17 AM) Hmmm He signed for cheaper than Jesse Crain This also makes the Ohman signing just look silly Wonder if KW went after him at all... seeing as how the 1st round pick was already gone. There was some concern by some front office people around baseball about Balfour's loss of velocity last season. He did lose velocity, but it was around 1 MPH. All I know is that he had a hell of a season last year. I would much rather have Balfour.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) Reasonable deal. Oakland has had a very underrated offseason. Other than not landing Beltre I don't see what's not to like about what they did. That team is looking dangerous.

My offseason grades....
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 09:45 AM) It's still only 192 PA's, so it could easily be sample size. When it happens 3 years in a row, you gotta start believing it's a real trend. Alexei's BABIP is horrible in April, so it could be partially on luck, but since I don't know his batted ball rates in those months, I can't really comment on whether or not it's just bad luck.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 12:40 PM) I can already see Kruk saying something stupid about how the Yankees had a great offseason because they didn't make any real changes. The Yankees probably had the worst off-season of all the big market teams. They overspent for a league average shortstop, overpaid a lot for their closer (even though I would say most of it is deserved), and their only real addition is Pedro Feliciano.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
Unfortunately, Jim Caple also wrote some article about how runs scored are one the most important individual stats in baseball in order to prove Derek Jeter wasn't bad last season. So there goes some of his credibility. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove09/...%26id%3d4848879

Realistic Adam Dunn expectations
QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 02:01 PM) Except that he'smaking more money than almost every player that created more runs than he did and they actually play a DEFENSIVE position! They play the whole game and help win games on defense and some can actually run and help their teams on the bases. They can bunt, hit and run etc. Way way overpaid for Dunn. You want Adam Dunn to bunt and hit and run? Seriously? Just for the sake of ending this horrible debate, let's look at the 2011 salaries of players ahead of Dunn in wRC+ from last season. And in order to make this fair, the player must be no longer arbitration eligible (6 or more years of service). Arbitration and pre-arb players don't count. This way, we can determine the value of a player better or like Dunn in the free agent market. Miguel Cabrera - $20 million Paul Konerko - $12 million Matt Holliday - $17 million (That's until 2016, then he gets deferred payments) Jayson Werth - $10 million (but he's getting $116 million the other 6 years of his deal) Aubrey Huff - $10 million Adrian Beltre - $14 million (then at least $76 million for the other 4 years) Carl Crawford - $14 million (and then $126 million for the other 6 years) The only guy who is much cheaper than Dunn is Huff. And that's understandable since he's older and he probably took a discount from the Giants. Everybody else is either at similar value or they're paid way more. That's also understandable, but you have to realize the market's value before you go rambling about how so and so isn't worth he's being paid.
