Weekly Top Prospects Report, 7/7
QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 8, 2017 -> 02:14 PM) In no particular order.... Mil NYY Colo San Diego Atlanta Houston Boston 2 or 3 others are toss ups. Our top 4 teams are a collective 40 or so under .500. I know, I know this means nothing, but if they were 40 or so over .500 everyone here would be raving, including me. Our first rounders have hurt us, not counting Burger, of course. Sox system is way better than Boston's right now. I think it's better than Milwaukees too and probably Houston

Reverse Standings Thread
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 8, 2017 -> 10:20 AM) I don't see how we could catch the Phillies, but #2 remains a possibility. Anyone know the top three prospects in next year's draft? I know it's early, but it would be nice knowing if there is some elite positional talent, especially from the college ranks. Appears to be a strong class at the top but it's highlighted by high school players. High School: Brice Turang SS CA, Jarred Kelenic OF WI, Kumar Rocker RHP GA, Joe Gray OF MS, Tristan Casas 1B FL College: Brady Singer RHP Florida, Seth Beer 1B/LF Clemson, Luken Baker 1B TCU, Konnor Pilkington LHP Miss State http://m.mlb.com/news/article/236744566/ji...-10-projection/

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 12:30 PM) All I see is a sad attempt to not have to pay him the new super-max contract after next year. Maybe so. They made the right decision to not pay that contract though.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 09:58 AM) This is the type of deal the Bulls should be making - taking a salary dump. But the Bulls never take that kind of deal. It's amazing for the Pistons to add Bradley for nothing. I hate the f***ing Bulls. Not really. Bradley would help Bulls win games this year and needs a huge contract next offseason. Pass.

Burger/Sheets to Kanny
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2017 -> 03:36 PM) Absolutely. Luis Gonzalez in CF leading off for Kanny with a 3-4-5 of Sheets (1B), Adolfo (RF), and Burger (3B). Thats a fun team.

Anthony Swarzak to Brewers; Sox receive Ryan Cordell
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2017 -> 07:46 PM) Rick Hahn has the best job in America by far. So for about five years he can put the worst team imaginable on the field (LOL, cringe worthy rotation of Pelphrey, Miguel G, Holland, Shields) and be lauded and loved for it. "Good job Rick," Reinsdorf will say after the season, "you are doing a good job of losing and getting us top draft picks. Hope you can keep acquiring horrible players so we can lose even more games." Then in the meantime he trades the few good older players we have. Real difficult. Anybody could sit in an office and trade Eaton or Sale or Robertson or Q. Oh wait ... he hasn't even traded Robertson or Q yet in the supposed rebuild. So in conclusion, what a great great job Hahn has: Lose as many games as possible with the worst players you can assemble while working on trades that anybody could execute. Obviously Boston wanted Sale. So you get a list of their best position player hitting prospect, Moncada, real difficult to pull off. Sign a top guy like Robert. Everybody wanted him. Real difficult to pull off. Hahn can enjoy 4-5 more seasons of horrid baseball and be praised for it, cause it gets us a good draft pick. I hope Hahn is enjoying his easy high paying job, putting a loser on the field and fans not being mad but saying, "PLEASE LOSE MORE!" At least we now know that greg775 is actually Rick Morrissey.

All Star Game No Longer Determines Home Field in WS
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 3, 2017 -> 07:46 PM) The all-star game this season does not determine homefield advantage in the WS. I am happy about this. The All-Star game is an exhibition game in which everybody should play if possible and it definitely should take on a festive atmosphere. It was stupid to make the game "matter" by danging as something as important as homefield advantage as the prize to the winner. The way to make the guys play hard and care more is to offer $500,000 per player on the winning team and $50,000 to each player on the losing team. That IMO would be better. But at least now the game is back to being a meaningless exhibition game, which it should be IMO. Do you agree? Holy s*** I agree with Greg

Tommy Kahnle
QUOTE (cornball @ Jul 5, 2017 -> 12:51 PM) Package him with Robertson to the Nats for Robles+ You'd likely get more for them separately and Robles is off the table for either guy.

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jul 5, 2017 -> 11:29 AM) Napoli was the comp he got on draft day. Hopefully he can be that with better defense and a longer career behind the plate. Napoli was an All-Star and one of the best offensive catchers in the league for the better part of a decade. If the White Sox get that out of Collins, or maybe even slightly better, it's a win. I think Brian McCann was actually his comp on draft day

Tommy Kahnle
QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jul 5, 2017 -> 12:26 PM) I think most people here severely overvalue what Kahnle could fetch in a trade. Give his short track record, his complete anonymity and the general volatility of relief pitchers, I would be shocked if the Sox got a single top 50 guy for him, let alone a package built around one. I think you just keep him then and let him close.

Tommy Kahnle
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 5, 2017 -> 11:39 AM) Tough call. Track record hasn't been good. Is this a fluke? Since the Sox aren't going to be contending in my opinion for another two years if someone makes a reasonable offer you move him. There are some reasons in the article why it might not be a fluke though. Was really good in minors, made some mechanical adjustments and has ridiculous stuff.

Tommy Kahnle
I'm shamelessly plugging my own article here: https://www.bagadonutssports.com/blog/2017/...-a-curious-case But, What should the White Sox do with Kahnle?

When Saladino/Leury return, who goes down?
If there are no trades prior to their return, Willy Garcia and Adam Engel will go down. They have options. Sox don't really have another choice unless they want to go with 12 pitchers which is probably what I'd do.

7/3 at Oakland A's
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 3, 2017 -> 04:57 PM) You should know by now they're being incredibly patient with guys. Heck, Nate Jones and Leury were supposed to have minor issues and I'm pretty sure they will both be out for two years Yep. Dylan Covey actually died and nobody said anything.

Attendance is Actually up 8.1%
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 3, 2017 -> 02:03 PM) Agreed. The 05 regime deserves credit for the WS title. Put them in the team Hall of Fame. But please Jerry and the group, SELL. Please sell. Our ballpark is no good (I know the popular opinion on here is it's great, but take away the food and what do you have except a monstrocity with a horrid upper deck). Aside from the park, we have a horrific front office. I agree with you. The supposed rebuild is not going to work. SELL, JERRY. Sell it to somebody with money to burn. Thank you. It always makes me feel better about myself when I disagree with pretty much everything in one of your posts.

The hell they calling up Moncada? THE THREAD
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 3, 2017 -> 04:47 PM) They do if they are doing well and Moncada can stay in AAA a bit longer and develp They really don't man. When the Sox think Moncada is ready (after the Super 2 Date) he'll be in Chicago regardless of how the other guys are doing

He's going to hit though. Even if he's a high OBP with power, if he stays at catcher, it's a win. If he's like a .265/.365/.450 guy with a bunch of homers and walks, he's likely an All-Star behind the plate.

Tyler Saladino, Leury Garcia, and Yolmer Sanchez have no bearing on Yoan Moncada or when he comes to the big leagues.

2017-18 official NBA discussion thread
QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 3, 2017 -> 03:56 PM) There's a significant drop in talent after the Cavs, Celtics, Raptors, Wizards, and maybe the Bucks. We will see who suits up for the Sixers first. Outside of Celtics, literally no one is trying to get better in the East. And even though they tried, Celtics still have a long way to go from really challenging the Cavs. So you can mark down Lebron in the Finals again in 2018. And the talent disparity for the two conferences is insane. If you list the top 10 players in the league, you have Lebron and maybe Giannis from the East, then who else? Cavs, Celtics, Raptors, Wizards, Bucks, and Heat are all likely playoff teams. I think Charlotte and Philadelphia are too. That leaves the rest. NY, Orlando, and Detroit are all better than the Bulls. Bulls will be battling Brooklyn, Indiana, and Atlanta for the basement.

QUOTE (turnin' two @ Jul 3, 2017 -> 03:58 PM) Yeah, well, he is hitting 100 points below that level. Walks are great and all, but if a guy doesn't show the ability to hit, pitchers are just going to attack him, and the walks will decline then disappear. He needs to hit. By no means am I calling him a bust or anything like that, it is his first full season of pro ball and he has time. But he has to hit. For a guy that was billed as an advanced college bat, it is a bit concerning to see him struggle to hit in his second go round in A-ball. If he were doing what he did last year (.258/.418/.467), most people would be happy with him even though it isn't progress. To this point, this season has been a step backwards (offensively) , and in terms of player development, that is a failure. Yes, he has gotten better defensively, but defensive catchers are a dime a dozen, it is that bat that could make him special. The bat needs to start showing some progress, it is scary that he has shown that he may be better suited for Kanny than Birmingham. I disagree a bit here. The most important part of Collins' development is staying at catcher. If he can do that, he could be an All-Star. He also doesn't have to be a monster offensively. If he can't stay at C and we are talking about a 1B/DH, then yes he needs to absolutely rake.

I'm not sure Minnesota is a top 6 seed out West. Taj isn't really a great fit. They need shooting really bad. THey don't shoot the 3 well enough to be a serious factor out West with the way the game is played now. GSW/SA/Houston/OKC are probably all still better. Wolves in that next group though with a bunch of teams.

Avi Garcia - All Star
QUOTE (Saladino'sMustache @ Jul 3, 2017 -> 10:56 AM) Kahnle got absolutely robbed. I know he's had some trouble lately, but look at his numbers compared to Betances. Kahnle: 0.9 WAR, 2.20 ERA, 0.918 WHIP, 7.86 K/BB. Betances: 0.5 WAR, 3.12 ERA, 1.346 WHIP, 2.29 K/BB. It's not even close. Look at it this way: Tommy Kahnle: 1.3 fWAR, 32.2 IP, 55K/7BB, 2.20 ERA and 1.21 FIP Dellin Betances: 0.7 fWAR, 26 IP, 48K/21BB, 3.12 ERA, 2.60 FIP

Nationals acquire Doolittle/Madson from As
Nightengale reported months ago that Sox were sending Robertson and a chunk of the contract to Washington for 3B Drew Ward and LHP Jesus Luzardo. It fell through because Ted Lerner (2nd richest owner in MLB) is cheap. It's easy to see what might have happened here. Sox want to eat X and get those players in return. Nats want Sox to eat Y and take same players. I doubt this deal happens. Robertson has been really good this year. While I want the Sox to eat $$ on deals in order to receive better prospects in return, I don't really think it should be necessary to eat much of Robertson's deal. You should get prospects for him while someone else takes on the $$. It's not that bad.
