  1. Alex: Top 10 for Kopech seems high considering (iirc) you saying he has a legitimate chance to be a reliever. Is the upside just so enormous that that outweighs the risk? Keith Law: Correct. It’s potentially a top 5 starter in baseball. Keith Law: He’s, not it’s.
  2. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) There are ways to be creative. A team can give Otani $8M upfront on a signing bonus, and then have a handshake deal in place for a long term contract after the season. The Sox just set a precedent with this by giving Anderson an extension before he had even reached one full year of service time. So essentially he would make $8M next season (about twice what he would in Japan) and then have an extension in place that would likely pay him at least $15M over the next six years. That gives the team 7 years of control and allows Otani to be a FA again in his age 29 season where he could pull in another large contract. That's a direct violation of the international rules though. I doubt any team does that. You are basically circumventing the CBA. I guess it could happen but I think it would be heavily frowned upon.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) There's like 6 posters that regularly post back here, so if anyone of them gets a crush it becomes disproportional. You can already see the soxtalk push happening for Delmonico. Delmonico was actually a real prospect before though.
  4. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 09:43 AM) I said as of today. Of course things change. The 2018 draft isn't for another year + a couple months. But like I said, I don't think there's any reason why Beer wouldn't be a top 15 pick in 2018 as of today. He leads the nation in walks, has 9 homers in 30 games, and isn't in the top 50 in the country in OBP or SLG. He also doesn't play a premium position on defense or play that spot at an elite level. If they made him eligible today, I don't think he goes top 15 in this current draft.
  5. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 09:32 AM) I would bet any amount of money that Beer would be a top 15 pick in the 2018 draft as of today. Could happen. I wouldn't be making the same bet with other people if I were you though. You need to go study up on draft history and how teams think before making blanket statements. If Seth Beer were named Eric Martin, there wouldn't be Sox fans wanting to tank for him. There's a chance that the Sox get a better player at #11 this year than Beer will even end up being but nobody is talking about the 2017 draft due to a catchy hashtag.
  6. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 09:14 AM) There's been a lot of buzz lately about Mississippi State's Brent Rooker lately. Admittedly I don't know a ton about him but his stats are eye-popping. I hope the Sox are considering him at pick #11. Rooker isn't even on top 100 draft prospect lists. I reached out to Callis, Crawford, and Manuel about it this weekend. They all were in agreement that he'll move up because teams love college bats but it won't be some meteoric rise to the level of Andrew Benintendi. Rooker could be a 1st rounder. Probably won't be a top half of the draft guy though.
  7. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 09:12 AM) I read somewhere that the Sox have been scouting Beer since has was 14 years old. How high will he be drafted? I really don't know. I do know that the Sox should and would consider him if he's still on the board at their pick in the 2018 draft. At Soxfest, Hostetler said that they have reports about Beer going all the way back to when he was 14 years old. They weren't scouting him then. At this point, Beer looks like a mid-late 1st round pick in the 2018 draft. He still has a full college season after this one. This isn't even like the 5th most important topic that pertains to the Sox right now.
  8. Beer isn't even a consensus top 5 pick at the moment. The campaign is funny and relevant. I want them to be terrible and then take the BPA in 2018. When talking about Beer though, there are way too many references to his batting average. I know it factors into his low BABIP but batting average really isn't that relevant of a measure, especially for someone that walks as much as he does. Batting average doesn't come close to telling the whole story.
  9. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 04:41 PM) The fact that he's a good story is part of the reason why he's overrated. Go ahead and cheer for him all you want, but I hear way more about him than other prospects in our system who also have backup ceilings. He's routinely on these sleeper lists and I'm pretty sure a certain poster here predicted Alvarez would develop into a top 100 prospect at one point. If it weren't for his interesting background, he'd just be another organizational guy IMO. I kind of agree here. He's an older prospect and while that's not really his fault, it's tough to see him having much of an impact on the next good White Sox team.
  10. Worrying about Giolito is totally warranted but Fulmer was throwing 90-91 last night and Lopez 92-93 on Thursday according to that Charlotte gun.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 05:11 PM) Pirates pro scouts are at the W-S game Is this unusual? They are playing the Astros affiliate. Kyle Tucker in CF.
  12. Zack Collins hit a bomb for Winston-SAlem
  13. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) Charlotte is stacked right now though. He literally has nowhere to play even in Triple-A unless someone got hurt. It's a head scratcher IMO. Rymer Liriano went on the DL at Charlotte.
  14. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 12:28 PM) Anyone have any idea where Jack Charleston is? Solid reliever I thought he'd be in Winston-Salem based on initial reports but he isn't on the roster.
  15. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 03:57 PM) I don't think LA will move Bellinger either, but it would take a heck of a depth package for LA to be able to get a deal doen without him I think they can get it done fairly easily using Verdugo, Alvarez, and Calhoun
  16. I really doubt that Otani comes over after the season. He could but the new CBA severely limits the amount of $$ he can make. He'd get a contract around $150-$200 million if he were a true free agent and he'd get it if he waited until he were 25. Let's pretend that Otani decides to come over after the season. The following teams can't sign him: Houston, Oakland, Atlanta, St. Louis, Cubs, Dodgers, San Francisco, Washington, San Diego, Cincinnati, and Kansas City. Small market teams could pay him $10 million and would control his rights for 6 years. Large market teams could pay him $8.3 million and control his rights for 6 years. Yankees have been speculative fit. They could give him $8.3 million. That's it. People have wondered whether a team could sign him and then rip up the arb years and extend him for huge $$. I guess they could but it'd be a deliberate skirting of the current international rules put in place. This situation should be fascinating.
  17. QUOTE (Blackout Friday @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 03:12 PM) I don't think a blister is going to be the reason they trade Bellinger and others. Q won't be bringing back Bellinger
  18. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 6, 2017 -> 12:33 PM) Yes. You are out of your mind.
  19. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 6, 2017 -> 09:45 AM) Surprise, surprise. Lately, it seems like anyone with even the furthest ties to the White Sox isn't too great in his eyes. And any mediocre former Sox prospect, like Tatis Jr, is the next Trout. Keith Law has no White Sox bias. This is absurd. Michael Kopech is his 7th ranked prospect in all of baseball and #1 pitching prospect in the game. Law wasn't high on Moncada or Cespedes either.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 10:23 PM) Somebody let Lindor know the WBC is over. What does this mean? Because he's raking?
  21. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 10:17 PM) I think the sox should draft Jake Burger if he's still available. I think he's one of the best in this year's draft. #11 is way too high for Burger
  22. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 04:22 PM) Piper just posted some interesting info. The nuts and bolts are that Tilmon told Underwood and Walker at the end of their in home meeting shortly after Underwood was hired that he was committed and would not ask for a release. Days ago his mother confirmed they were still good. Then he did this out of the blue today without the approval of his mother (she's the main driver of him committing). She was not/is not happy about it and still thinks he'll be in Champaign next year. He also surmised this is all because Tilmon is upset that Mark Smith is getting attention and is making a power play to get more attention (and probably money). If true, f*** that kid. edit: corrected a few minor details. f*** that kid? Really? Isn't he like 18? You are taking this a bit too seriously. All I've seen on twitter is people calling Tilmon names. College sports diehards are so f***ing creepy and weird. Holy cow. People need to leave the kid alone and let him figure out the rest of his life. Also, Orlando Antigua is a big deal. They aren't mutually exclusive, but if I were an Illini fan, I'd rather have Antigua than Tilmon.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 4, 2017 -> 05:20 PM) I watched the first few innings to see everybody bat once at least and see Q get hammered. --Pathetic crowd as expected. That's all on management. -- This team is going to lose so many games it'll make our heads spin. How the hell is Hawk going to broadcast road games for gawd sakes? He's used to a team on paper that is a contender. -- I would assume this would be a great season for folks to get great seats on stubhub once the weather turns and spread out and enjoy the food of the Cell. There won't be any fans getting in your way in the aisles, etc., for years to come. Absolutely no reason to follow any of these players except Anderson. Have we ever had a worse starting rotation on paper? Ever a worse defense on paper? Blah team speed. Wow. I stick with 59-63 wins max. Maybe less. Who the hell are we going to beat with this pitching staff and this offense? And this defense? I've been waiting all day for Greg's opinion on this
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 4, 2017 -> 01:22 PM) It would be really nice to see a Perez breakout, both for a Latin program, and for our catching depth. Carlos Perez and Seby Zavala are catching in Kannapolis with Dunning, Hansen, and Flores.
  25. Pitcher: Bernardo Flores Hitter: Carlos Perez
