QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 10:05 AM) This guy has only won 1 Super Bowl as a GM and 1 as a director of player personnel. Been a part of playoff teams almost every year. Total bum. I know a lot of teams that what kill for 1 Super Bowl win and to be a contender every year. Ted Thompson has his faults, but he is still one of the best GM's in the game. That's not just my opinion. This whole thing with Sitton may come back to bite them, but I will give Ted Thompson the benefit of the doubt for now. I can't think of one player that he let go who ended up still being great and the Packers looked dumb. Marco Rivera Mike Wahle Scott Wells Aaron Kampman Greg Jennings James Jones Charles Woodson Tramon Williams He was second guessed on all of those. None of those players did much when left. So Sitton may be great for another 5 years and the Packers look dumb, but I would be more willing to bet he doesn't finish that deal with the Bears. Also, the Packers have a lot of homegrown talent because they draft well. Free agency is not a sound strategy, I wish Thompson was a little more active, but outside of the Broncos, most teams that live off free agency are bad and stay bad. He's absolutely good at his job. He's not the greatest GM ever that should never be questioned though. That's how people act about him.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 01:53 PM) He's not that good a player. I'd release him and let some other organization deal with his distraction. Last time I looked this was a "team sport" and he has grasped all the attention on that team. Good luck to them winning anything of note this season. The Niners will probably be 3-13. That has nothing to do with who sits or stands for the National Anthem though. He can do whatever he wants. I don't care. Stand. Don't stand. Whatever. It did a good job of exposing stupid people on the internet and stupid people that I encounter on a daily basis though. Where is the Josh Brown thread? Oh wait there isn't one.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 08:08 AM) Packers just don't value the guard position that much. Mike McCarthy yesterday said they value some positions more than others. So the Packers cut a player on the wrong side of 30 who has seen his play decline last year and this preseason. They have a young guard who they think is ready to go. They save almost 6 million dollars which will almost certainly go resigning their LT. I still think Sitton is a good player, the Bears aren't getting garbage, but I don't think he is a top 5 guard anymore. He must be bad if the genius Ted Thompson got rid of him. The same Ted Thompson who has had 2 of the greatest QBs of all time and has 1 SB appearance in his 11 years on the job. The Packers are a really good organization but the slobber fest that people have over TT is crazy. Their team isn't loaded with homegrown talent because they are all great. It's because they don't cut any of them. They don't use free agency which is generally a sound strategy but carrying over $20 million in space every year for a SB contender with holes doesn't really make any sense. He got the QB position right though and it covers up a lot of holes. GoSox, this isn't directed at you. You seem like a good fan and you are a good poster. I just don't really understand the Ted Thompson thing. I never really have.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 10:14 AM) Absolute BOMBS http://m.mlb.com/video/?affiliateId=clubMEGAMENU Oh yea Jose is back. With the addition of a few players, this offense is going to be much improved next season. This is what I want to see: Fowler Eaton Abreu Frazier Cabrera Moreland Wieters Lawrie/Saladino Anderson Really digging the balance of that lineup - speed at the top and bottom, high OBP at the top, and power in the middle. That's a lineup combined with top 3 in the league pitching that can win a lot of games. Would you be in favor of forfeiting a draft pick in the 11-15 range in order to sign Dexter Fowler? I would not.

User Actions Following Adam SchefterVerified account @AdamSchefter Looks like former Packers' Pro Bowl G Josh Sitton's first visit will be to...division-rival Chicago Bears, per sources. Saints could follow

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 12:42 AM) Yes. But when Colin and others protest by sitting during the anthem, it's really a direct slap in the face to military men and women. No it's really not.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 10:45 AM) Guaranteed Rate Field at Comiskey Park...or Guaranteed Rate Field at Sox Park. Then we could call it Comiskey or Sox park for short and it'd be accurate. You can call it Comiskey Park or Sox Park now if you want to.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 08:37 AM) The deal is fine...if the White Sox finally start to play like a winner. Otherwise, simply a punch line, the butt of more jokes. Nobody should give a s*** about that though. Who cares if people are making jokes about it? It's a stadium name. Completely pointless for people to make dumb jokes about it.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 09:55 AM) I'd rather them get rid of Royal and just go younger but thats wishful thinking with his contract and the org thinking they can actually do something this season. Hmm.. why does that sound familiar? I think Bears can "compete" or be right near 8-8. That might put them in a race for parts of season though. I see the Cardinals, Packers, and Panthers as playoff teams. If I had to pick before season I would have said playoff teams were: Cardinals, Seahawks, Redskins, Panthers, Packers, Vikings. I think the Bridgewater injury opens a spot for someone. I don't know for sure that the Bears with their schedule are definitely worse than NYG, Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Minnesota. I think they are better than Philly, Detroit, San Francisco, LA, and Tampa Bay. Could be interesting.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 09:13 AM) Mariani. Ugh. Why? WR coach Curtis Johnson loves Mariani. He's a lock IMO even though I'm not really a fan.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 08:48 AM) Meredith had a pretty good preseason, that hurt Bravermans chances a lot. i think they try and sneak him through waivers too Problem is that they are keeping Royal and Mariani. Braverman is a slot guy with minimal ST impact. They can't keep 3 slot guys. White and Jeffery are on the team. That leaves 2 spots and Wilson starts on PUP. I would think that Meredith and Bellamy make it as last two but then they don't have a KR on the roster without Thompson. I expect a lot of moving parts over the next few days

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 08:18 AM) raBBIt has stated multiple times that Hahn actually wanted Middlebrooks as the headliner which is just as bad. KW wanted Garcia. I mean technically, Hahn hired Paddy and Hostetler for their current positions. Were they recommended by KW? Possibly -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 06:59 AM) so did Braverman win the starting slot job now or what I said around draft time that he'd be starting by week 8 or so but at this point it doesn't appear there is a roster spot available for him. I think they try to get him through waivers and onto the practice squad. I think someone claims him though.
-
The ISFA receives more $$ though and the Sox have a separate sponsorship deal with Guaranteed Rate. I would imagine that Sox will also add a Cellular Phone company as an official sponsor with US Cellular out of the picture now. I think people are overreacting because the team is bad. This deal is fine.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 08:08 AM) So Hahn was selling him as a possible or future CFer when he didn't believe in him at all? And Hahn wanted Iglesias, KW wanted Avi? Source? And what scouts did Hahn bring in that weren't there already? KW brought in Paddy, shouldn't he have been the one who targeted Montas...or assigned a scout because he already knew Montas when he was with Toronto competing with Boston for Latin American talent? raBBIt has stated multiple times that Hahn actually wanted Middlebrooks as the headliner which is just as bad. KW wanted Garcia. -
Jon Heyman: Sox have little interest in moving Sale or Quintana

QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 02:16 PM) That's the kind of thing they will attempt to do. But then get outbid on Fowler and/or Wieters and buy some other garbage instead. Not that that lineup would be that intimidating to begin with. I hope they don't give up their 1st rounder to sign a 30+ year old Dexter Fowler for multiple years. -

QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 01:31 PM) Per usual, a great add by CWS. The big difference between the Sox and the Cubs is not only the Cubs full embrace of losing to "tank" but more importantly their willingness to sell at the deadlines. While the Cubs would be way out of the race when they traded, the Sox have failed to trade when they're out of it in all likelihood. Cubs roster is 11/25 from trade. Jake Arrieta - Received for a flier #5 rotation type in Feldman. Aroldis Chapman - Paid dearly for. Carl Edwards Jr. - Picked up for Matt Garza Justin Grimm - Same as Edwards Jr. Kyle Hendricks - Acquired from Ryan Dempster. Mike Montgomery - Acquired for a prospect without a place in their org in Vogelbach. Travis Wood - Acquired by selling off Sean Marshall at the deadline. Miguel Montero - Acquired for two decent prospects. Tommy La Stella - Acquired for a minor league bullpen arm in Arodys Vizcaino. (maybe the one trade they've lost so far) Addison Russell - Acquired for Samardzija Dexter Fowler - Acquired for excess arm in Straily and redundant Valbuena. Away from Chapman, who they took a big leap on when the time was right, this all comes from Feldman, Garza, Dempster, Sean Marshall, Samardzija and excess pieces/prospects. They've lost maybe one of these trades and we'll see on Chapman. In the same time, the Sox have traded Peavy, Crain (nothing), Rios (nothing), Duke (maybe a 4th outfielder) and Navarro (probably nothing). They also traded for Anthony Rizzo. Everyone talks about how they've drafted but that's Bryant, Baez, and Schwarber basically with Almora on the way. The White Sox have drafted Sale and Rodon. It's not that different in that regard. -
Kaplan is still insisting that they get $6.5 million per year

What are the odds that Avi is still here in 2017?
Y2Jimmy0 replied to balfanman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 10:38 AM) Because at least 2 of those 3 guys would be WAY worse than Avi. I promise you that if May or Engel were up here today, there would be meltdowns about them being rushed, not ready, and/or not good enough. Coats is the one guy who may actually deserve a shot, but isn't exactly a guy worth setting the world on fire for anyway. I actually disagree here. Engel and May can both play CF defensively which makes them good at 1 thing to Garcia's 0 things. -

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) I also have little interest in trading two all-star pitchers. Pitching is the name of the game. Sale, Quintana and Rodon and add Fulmer and either Shields or Gonzalez and you have a pretty solid group. It's the bullpen that needs help Even the bullpen has options though. Jones and Jennings are good. Robertson will probably be moved. Petricka and Putnam will be back. Guys like Goldberg and Clark could get a shot from the minors. Ynoa looks like he may be alright. Burdi will also be in the bullpen. I wouldn't spend any $$ on the bullpen. Sox have to develop failed starters as useful bullpen pieces. Paying relievers is about the dumbest thing you can do unless you are doing it for the sole purpose of dealing them at a later date. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 10:49 AM) Nope. Though I think they are both semi-long shots anyway for that, but both are possible. Clark I understand. Why wouldn't they give Goldberg innings though? There is no reason why Matt Albers should be getting innings that Goldberg could be pitching.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 08:03 AM) I got the majority of those right. I didn't predict Michalczewski because he's been there before, and players rarely go twice. Also kinda surprised at Hawkins, but hey, why not. Does this prevent Clark or Goldberg from being September call ups?

Fangraphs: Carlos Rodon has taken a step forward
Y2Jimmy0 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Rodon is well on his way to becoming a TOR starter. We knew this though if paying attention. He's still a really young pitcher that didn't have any minor league time. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 10:13 AM) And in the mean time, while we talk about how awesomely valuable Chris and Q are, we can miss the playoffs for the 6th straight season with them next year. This is the common retort but trading them for less than they're worth is equally stupid. This really isn't a debate. We should want them to be traded because if they are, a haul is coming in return. If they aren't traded, it's because those deals aren't out there and it's not worth doing anyway.
