  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 10:28 AM) I think he has more of a say. He is the one doing most of the communication with other GMs, agents. How much more remains to be seen. It has been reported how his ideas have been rejected, but are they every idea? I doubt it. I'd venture to guess the Sox have done something the last few years that Hahn really wanted and KW and JR weren't so sure. I disagree with part of this. raBBit has stated that Melky was a Kenny Williams decision. That offseason is the one that looks really bad in hindsight. They weren't ready to give up 2 draft picks that offseason and pay a premium for a closer.
  2. QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 09:01 AM) An overlooked fact on organizational depth is the 40 man roster and transactions impact. If Burdi is added to the major league roster he has to be added to the 25 and therefore 40 man roster. He doesn't currently have to be there because he is a new draftee. If he is added, that means one less spot for another prospect so someone who is exposed to the rule 5 draft this winter. I see no reason to rush him, use up an option year and start his service time clock. He has performed well enough that if you "go for it " next year he will likely be in the bullpen mix but if you go for a rebuild looking at him as a starter is probably worthwhile. He, Hanson and Adams could be seen as future mid or higher rotation options. So with that said, I started to look at guys on the bubble and was hoping someone may be able to give some info on three players David Holmberg LHP. 25 yo and quietly having his best season in the minors. He failed previously with Cincy in some auditions but has something clicked? A WHIP about 1.0 at AAA and averaging over 6 innings a start. Nolan Sanburn RHP 25 at AA. Looks like he is getting a look late this year as a starter. ERA in twos and WHIP around 1 for the last 4 months. Any hope? Peter Tago RHP 24yo at AA. Former first rounder came to sox in 2015 and looked liked they helped him. Was maintaining improvement this year. Lights out in June and July then couple rough outings in Aug and on DL. These look like players that could help a team and might end up exposed/selected in a rule 5 situation. Any info on Tago's injury or the players as prospects is appreciated. Tilson or someone else could go to 60 day DL. Multiple guys (Avila, Ajax, Morneau, and Navarro) will be off the 40 man in the offseason. It's not that big of a deal.
  3. QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 11:15 PM) Where did he say this? It was at the time but it always stuck out to me. Like Hahn was stunned that JR said yes to it. Probably on the radio. It was over 2 years ago.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 10:14 PM) Yeah, I remember him saying he told Melky's agent that he didn't know how they would possibly afford to sign him but that they wanted to know if he was interested in coming to the White Sox, just in case...they were odd comments for certain. Here it is: Hahn made a comment at the time about something he learned in law school. When you get an answer that you want that you aren't expecting, just turn around and leave the room. Basically, JR told him to sign the deal and instead of clarifying and asking more about it, Hahn said "thanks" and walked away. It's actually kind of funny the way he explained it.
  5. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 12:57 PM) He reminds me of Buehrle. Quietly goes about his business, will give you 200+ innings without overpowering stuff. His stuff is overpowering compared to Buehrle's though.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 07:45 AM) Boers looks to be struggling to recover from surgery. I hope that he's going to be okay. Does anyone have any idea what kind of surgery he had?
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 07:31 AM) Future Sox pointed out that GF has a longer schedule than WS. Yep. And the Pioneer League is usually a hitters league. What he's doing is a very good sign.
  8. http://www.todaysknuckleball.com/al/chicag...ng-consistency/ Good stuff about Hansen here.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 19, 2016 -> 09:07 AM) I thought Bullard,Williams, and that other undrafted tackle that's huge looked good. Pretty certain Ferguson and Sutton will get cut, leaving the emery experience at Alshon Jeffery, Long and Fuller. But the "we had 4 defensive starters out", yeah, that's going to be the regular season. Timu and Anderson were as soft in coverage as ever and we were run all over. We have a thin level of players that win matchups and the rest we have to scheme around. We just have no depth for injuries. To be fair, Emery drafted Pat O'Donnell and Charles Leno as well.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 18, 2016 -> 08:19 PM) Meh. Soft middle, no rush, bad vs run. Pretty familiar. Their front 7 is much improved. No Trevathan either. Secondary is weakest spot on team but they couldn't fix everything.
  11. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 17, 2016 -> 02:08 PM) Yes Dick, we know that's what most teams do. All that is going on here at a White Sox fan message board is White Sox fans simply having a debate as to why Jake Burdi was the best player on the team's board at #26. Maybe history will prove out that he was, and maybe it won't. But given that Burdi is a reliever, questioning his pick in the first round is certainly reasonable. I have no idea who Jake Burdi is
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 16, 2016 -> 02:32 PM) What is out there that would indicate KW and JR are stooges and RH is not? He's been part of the operation and decision making process for more than a few years. Rick Hahn has been the proverbial back up QB for years. Always very popular until you actually have to put him in a game. I would argue that Rick Hahn is more of a modern baseball thinker with an eye towards analytics and I'd like to see him get a chance to run Baseball OPS on his own. I could be wrong about my thoughts on that though. I have no idea who is in charge, who makes what decisions, what's true, and what isn't true. I just know that my favorite baseball team is a mess and there doesn't appear to be a clear way to get out of it.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 16, 2016 -> 01:36 PM) Did Hahn give JR an ultimatum? Heard someone ask Kaplan about it No. Kaplan said that Hahn's contract is up after the season. He said that the person he spoke with said that Hahn should give JR an ultimatum. He said this because this person believes that Hahn would get another job in 8 seconds. Maybe not a GM job, but as an Assistant and get another GM job within 2 years. Well respected in the industry.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 09:33 AM) Beck makes the most sense because he was the guy just called up. Turner also just pitched the other day, so he is a possibility too. Turner doesn't have any options.
  15. Kahnle optioned to Charlotte and Albers DFA is my guess.
  16. Good stuff here on Alex Call: http://notesfromthesally.com/2016/08/13/th...l-of-white-sox/
  17. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 07:35 AM) Why is Joey Bosa being a jag and not signing his contract with the Chargers? Dude hasn't played a snap in the NFL and is mad that he got drafted by the Chargers? Please. His mom came out and said that they wish they pulled an Eli Manning. He's not. The Chargers are idiots. They've done this before. They agree on overall value but they want to be able to recoup money if he's hurt or bad. Not going to happen.
  18. I wish they would DFA Albers and bring up Burdi. Give Fulmer the Gonzalez starts.
  19. Jimmy Murphy ‏@MurphysLaw74 3h3 hours ago Per NHL source, #JimmyVesey zeroed in on #Blackhawks & #Devils. That may change, but that's the latest on #VeseyWatch @ESPNNH #StretchRun
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 11:57 PM) 10+ pages and I haven't seen anyone face this setup from a business aspect. For a comparison - the northside franchise sold for a high price, but because of continued team cost inflation and the seemingly successful rebuilding project, plus playing hardball on renovations, that looks like they've turned that into a strong business asset. So what do the White Sox have? They look to me like an extremely undervalued asset. They are at the bottom of the league in both attendance and in TV ratings, but just like the Cubs - they have a revenue stream that does not die when they lose. The Cubs still fill that ballpark even if they are losers, the White Sox still have the parking lot revenues even when they are losers, and they throw in continued revenue sharing growth. Therefore, they have a franchise that has a large potential market, substantial potential for growth, and a revenue stream that makes it difficult for them to truly lose money even if they make poor decisions. Basically, if they do a terrible job at managing the baseball side of things, they still break even unless they chose not to. Throw in the ability to sign a new TV contract in 3 years and the reality that they're already in one of the oldest ballparks in MLB and if you're a 20-year investor this franchise looks to me like a huge medium- and long-term growth opportunity. You've got multiple revenue streams that could be substantially grown on a 5-year basis - without endorsing him, that's exactly what Cuban did with the Mavericks, taking them from a team averaging 14,000 tickets/game to a team averaging 20,000 tickets/game - a huge boost in interest which corresponded with boosts in media ratings and money. A team averaging 50% of its tickets sold is a bigger revenue growth opportunity than the Mavericks. In the long term, this team has a stable stadium setup for 10 years with a revenue stream that, like the Cubs, supports the franchise even if they're losing, and they then have the ability to gradually start pushing towards a new stadium. While right now Illinois is in no shape to be any part of that, medium-term revenue growth by filling seats and improving the media contracts could be the basis of a multi-year lobbying campaign. That will not be easy, that will take playing politics well, that will take some luck on the state of the Illinois and Chicago budgets, that will not be pretty, but in the 10+ year window the right owner(s) could start getting close. And let's face it, there's a nonzero chance that won't happen. However, if you get in right now and are in baseball's good graces, then if the state of Illinois refuses to set the clock back to before whatever ultimatum you give them, you could be the first franchise to relocate in decades. Right now baseball is hesitant on both expansion and relocation. If the Rays are able to do something about their stadium before their 2027 lease comes up, then it's hard to see which team would actually be a candidate to move. If MLB doesn't expand before that time (something that, as an owner you would have a strong voice in), then markets like Vegas (esp. if the NFL opens it up), Portland, and other markets could be strong candidates to take on the franchise. Finally, again even if they do a terrible job, they have continued growth of franchise value and continued growth of shared revenue streams on top of all that. If I had a couple billion to play with...this franchise would be an extremely tempting asset. The current ownership has been getting by and surviving, but successful franchises are several Ledecky's ahead of them. The Sox are an asset that will not lose money because of established deals and it's an asset that you can project multiple lines of revenue growth over the long term. If you're an effective ownership group, there are billions of dollars of unrecognized revenue potential here. Great post, Balta. I agree with most of this. This team is in Chicago and is in a division with Cleveland, Minnesota, and Kansas City. Sox could be a financial monster if run properly.
  21. The audio is here in the 2nd hour: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/audio/the-boers-bernstein-show/ Sounds like nothing concrete but said rich people think they'll be available soon. He basically said: Lots of people think White Sox will be available relatively soon. Back channel talk among wealthy people wanting to buy Sox. Team valued around $1.1 billion now. They speculated that a new stadium in the loop with the skyline in the background pushes it near $2 million.
  22. Alec Hansen is pitching for Great Falls tonight.
  23. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 10, 2016 -> 01:03 PM) Because Sale could have 20 wins and is going for the Cy Young. I know SABR stats overshadow wins but it is still a used stat by mainstream fans for indicating success. It's a stat used by stupid fans. It doesn't make sense and Sale has no control over it.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 10, 2016 -> 06:06 PM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/08/2017...ngs-august.html Can anyone realistically see the Sox signing any of these guys? Overpaying for Michael Saunders and then watching him sit a year on the DL would be par for the course. Let's not forget the three year rule from last offseason will wipe out nearly everyone but Bautista and maybe Trumbo. You do know that the 3 year thing was nonsense, right? Doesn't really need to be mentioned anymore
  25. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 10, 2016 -> 05:39 PM) Let's hope he is a better reliever than Poreda, Ring and Reed. At least Addison had "plus" value where he was selected. Some WAR magician will make him out to be a bargain if he's halfway decent, surely. Let's also hope he is more effective than Carson has been out of the pen or Hahn will look even more foolish since there's no compelling reason to push him at this point...that might have been the case were/with Robertson dealt at the deadline. I used to agree that wasting a 1st rounder on a reliever was bad business but then I saw this year's deadline. Teams are stupid. Did you see the haul received for Giles from Philly in the offseason? Even if out of the bullpen, if Burdi is awesome, he's a very valuable commodity.
