  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) I would say whoever they draft automatically assumes the #1 prospect in the White Sox system. Yeah most likely. Rondon will be in the top 10 though correct?
  2. QUOTE (scs787 @ May 2, 2014 -> 01:35 AM) This post was lost in the shuffle.... Another interesting angle is that "European coaching legend" Ettore Messina has reportedly thrown his hat in the mix of potential head coaches. What's interesting about that is he used to coach Mirotic, so that could make him(Mirotic) more inclined to come over which could be huge. Past Messina there are also a ton of other solid names out there. Lionel Hollins, who I think would be a great fit(Seeing as the Bulls and Griz play so similarly), is out there. Jeff Van Gundy could return to coaching. Byron Scott who's a lil meh. Then the intriguing first year NBA HC guys like Kerr, Ollie, and Hoiberg. I think it'd be a real interesting year to do this If Thobodeau is gone for whatever reason, I think Fred Hoiberg would be next coach of the Bulls. Forman has Iowa State ties to him and I believe Hoiberg bought Gar Forman's house or Gar Forman bough Hoiberg's Chicago home. One or the other.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2014 -> 04:41 PM) I text with a Vikings fan and he asked me who I think the Bills would be trading up for (because they're reportedly interested in Watkins). All I said was that the only guy worthy of trading up for in this draft, at least at the top, is Clowney, and that's if you believe [you can/he will] translate his talent onto the field because he could be an absolute monstrosity. I think he can and will, others don't. Clowney and M. Williams bookending a three headed trio of Dareus, K. Williams, and Branch makes for a nasty, nasty OLine, plus you can also still rush Hughes off the edge too. Interesting. I could see the Bills moving up for Greg Robinson if he fell to like #5. Robinson is a stud.
  4. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 2, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) I really think the team can and will employ both of these strategies. I don't know if he's considered a big time FA, but Justin Masterson is a guy that would make sense. Sinkerballer, RH, expensive but not grotesquely expensive. I'd want Shields (depending on the price) but Masterson seems to be more aligned with the team's tendencies. The Sox will be in no position to sign either of them if it costs a 1st round draft pick.
  5. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ May 1, 2014 -> 09:26 PM) My man Cleuluis went 3-5 Also: Josh Feldman ‏@BigTexJosh 1h WOW! SS @CleuluisRondon just made a diving defensive stab on the other side of 2B then flung it to first for the out. He is fun to watch. Josh Feldman ‏@BigTexJosh 1h AGAIN! Cleuluis Rondon with a sliding backhand stab then throws from a knee to 3B to get the lead runner for the 2nd out of the inning. Rondon will be in the White Sox top 10 prospects if he keeps this up won't he?
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 06:16 PM) The slot value for the #3 pick is just over $5.7 million. And that's the problem. The Sox could go a little bit over but not a ton. They have like $9.5 million to spend on their first 10 picks. Pittsburgh drafted Mark Appel at #8 overall two years ago. Pittsburgh signed the rest of their 9 top 10 draft selections and really only had like $3.2 million slot value available. Appel had to either take that or go back to school. It's just so hard now to go overboard in the first round.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 01:19 PM) Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 8m Our Draft experts take their First-round guesses: @jimcallisMLB says Tyler Kolek, @JonathanMayoB3 says Jeff Hoffman. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...rticle_73746266 Yeah I was just going to post the same piece. This is also the Top 100 Draft Prospects from MLB.com http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2014/#list=draft

    2014 TV thread

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 08:02 PM) I heard there is going to be a new show called Gotham that is centered around a young Commish Gordon and how some of the villains came to become who they were. I'm not really a comic books guy, and I don't really follow Batman/Spiderman outside of the Hollywood movies, but the show sounds pretty interesting. And of course another reason I want to see it is because Donal Logue is a main character, and I love me some Donal Logue. Yeah Commissioner Gordon will be played by Ben MacKenzie who is from THe OC and Southland.
  9. QUOTE (scs787 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 01:09 PM) So we're doing a community mock draft over on talkbears and I was put in charge of the Bears. I went with Donald in the first and faced a real interesting choice in the 2nd. I had planned to go FS but HHCD, Pryor, Buccanon, Ward, and Joyner were all gone. Terrence Brooks, who I kinda like, was the top ranked FS there...butttt I had RaShede Hageman staring at me as the clear BPA. I really think Ratliff should be a rotational player at this point in his career, and Hageman offers the versatility Emery likes(Can play anywhere on the DL). Given the situation who would you take? Hageman? Brooks? Marcus Roberson? Phillip Gaines? "Shock the world" with Allen Robinson or Austin Serafain-Jenkins? I went all Tommie Harris/Tank Johnson on the draft and went with Hageman with guys like Ed Reynolds, Dion Bailey, Tre Boston, Antone Exum, and Brook Vereen in mind to play centerfield. Depends on what CB's are on the board. You could go with a guy like Pierre Desir right there. If offense, I would go Jace Amaro if available. Hageman would be a steal at 51 though.
  10. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 10:22 AM) I agree with both of you. I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong, that Boras won't disclose his client's contract demands until he is selected. So if he doesn't go to Houston it'll be interesting to see how how it plays out. Does Boras end up playing ball? If you know anything about Rodon's personality you would think he wants to go pro. I would hope 1-3 money and a promise to get him to the bigs on the fast track would lure Rodon into our grasp. Can anyone comment on Miami and Rodon? I'm sure they have been out there scouting him but if Houston does take one of the HS arms, what does Miami do? It really seems like the media is playing it as it's either Houston or the Cubbies for Rodon. I would suppose that it's possible because Miami has the most money to spend. I have only really seen them linked to HS arms and Kolek in particular. Interesting scenarios for the Sox all around. I don't think anyone should be really upset about taking Kolek, Rodon, Hoffman, or Aiken honestly. If they decided to go with Alex Jackson I wouldn't even hate that. Something like Beede or Turner would drive me insane but I just can't see that happening. If Houston takes Rodon, Sox will be choosing between 1 of the HS arms and Hoffman. If the Astros take one of the HS arms, the Sox will most likely be choosing between Hoffman or Rodon. Should be interesting either way.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) I honestly don't think Teddy is going to get drafted in the 1st. I really liked Teddy coming out, but the more I see and read about him, the more I am reminded of Jimmy Clausen. I think he falls to the 2nd and it's certainly possible he's not even among the top 5 QBs taken. Of course, he could still just as easily be the 2nd or 3rd QB taken too. I think the Vikings want Bortles or Mettenberger I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you draft Teddy Bridgewater and put him in a West Coast Offense, you will have yourself a top 10 NFL QB. Teams are scared because he doesn't "look the part" and his hands are small. They are worried about durability. Accuracy is the #1 trait in a QB in my opinion, and he's the most accurate. The fact that some teams are supposedly salivating over a bum like Tom Savage but questioning Teddy is crazy to me.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 09:41 AM) Even after the way he was used this year? I would agree with you that he should take the money and go pro. What I am arguing is that if he wants 1-1 money from a different team he will end up going back to school because it won't happen.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 09:10 AM) Well, I for one am excited for the offseason. And already regretting the disappointment I'll have in late july when our offseason sucked. Mirotic billed as the big addition to go along with 2 1st round picks. YAY!
  14. QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:50 AM) Better not be Boykin. Nah I think it's Michigan for Boykin.
  15. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 08:14 AM) I'm starting to think that Teddy Bridgewater might fall to the Vikings. Was hoping that wouldn't happen. I love Bridgewater. He's not really a fit for what Norv wants to do on offense though. I wouldn't be surprised if they go defense in round 1 and then try to maneuver their way to selecting Mettenberger. He fits perfectly. Carr fits as well.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 04:12 PM) But they still haven't come up with a way to get around going over your draft allotment. The first pick slot is $7,922,100. The White Sox total for all draft picks has to be under $9,509,700. So if the Sox were to draft Rodon, and give him #1 pick money, they would have about $1.6 million to spend on the entire rest of their draft picks, otherwise they would face the following sanctions. $1.6 million would get the Sox something like their second round pick and their 5th round pick, and no other signings over $100,000. In theory, they could go up to $9,985,184.99 and just pay a tax. That amounts to about an extra $450,000, or about the price of a 4th round draft pick. After that, they are giving up draft picks, and that won't happen. This is well explained. It's almost impossible to give Rodon 1-1 money if you aren't picking 1st overall. If that is what he wants and Houston doesn't bite, I think he ends up going to back to NC State.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 11:07 PM) Seems like Danish is the type of guy that will go under the radar on top 100 lists due to his strikeout total. However, assuming he stays healthy, it's hard to imagine him not having a successful professional career. Yep. FutureSox tweeted yesterday that Danish has 26 ip, 23 H, 3 ER, 6BB, 17K, and 42:13 GO:FO ratio in 5 starts. 1.04 era.
  18. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 09:03 AM) I definitely agree with this, even though it's obvious. I still would love to sign James Shields in the off season, and use these glut of infield prospects to acquire a catcher like Grandal. Reminder, with all the contracts expiring, I believe Sox will only be around 48 million in payroll next season. If Hahn and the Sox are serious about competing next year and coming off a successful year this year, then I would love to sign Shields and Chris Davis. Protection for Abreu and our line up literally couldn't be stopped. CF Eaton 2B Semien 1B/DH Abreu 1B/DH Davis RF Garcia LF Viciedo C Grandal SS Ramirez 3B Davidson Rotation Sale Shields Quintana Danks Johnson/Rienzo/Carroll Go big or go home. I would hate giving up a 1st rounder to sign Shields.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 08:21 AM) I wasn't referring to the spelling. Oh using the word makes me stupid? I understand. I'll check with you next time I type something.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:28 AM) Yes on the 2nd part because of the first. Yeah I have no idea how I spelled that wrong. I'm usually good about that stuff. I still feel the same way though.
  21. QUOTE (VAfan @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 01:37 PM) Everyone seems to assume that the Sox are not done unloading contracts, and will be looking to help other teams at the deadline this year by moving major league players for prospects. I'm not so sure that will be true. It's all based on the assumption that the Sox will be out of the AL Central race by July. But why is that necessarily going to happen? The Sox offense looks nothing like it did last season. We have a new hitting coach. We have a stud offensive player in Jose Abreu. We have an excellent lead off hitter in Adam Eaton. We actually have some left handed bats in Gillespie, De Aza, Dunn, Garcia, Nieto, and Danks. Alexei Ramirez has rediscovered his power stroke to go along with his higher average. Dayan Viciedo is hitting better than most of us hoped he could. Tyler Flowers will likely return to earth, but not likely at the pathetic level he showed last year, but at a very reasonable level that suggests the Sox may have a real catcher. Semien's emergence makes Gordon Beckham expendable. We haven't even seen Matt Davidson yet. Even without Avisail Garcia -- the Sox' offense has not collapsed. On the pitching side, things have looked bad, but they seem repairable. Chris Sale should return. Quintana is still solid. John Danks is pitching better than he did the last two years. That leaves two starter holes to fill. But with a solid offense, you may need only league average guys to fill those slots. And the Sox have multiple options. The bullpen is another major concern, but bullpen guys should be relatively easy to pick up. Plus, Jones should get healthy and help stabilize the late-inning group. The Sox have Gordon Beckham to trade at the very least. This seems to me to be a team that could hover around .500 throughout the season. And with every other team in the AL Central at a similar level, it doesn't look like the Tigers or anyone else will run away with the division. If Ken Williams were still the GM, you know he'd be thinking about how to make a run this year. With Rick Hahn, we don't have the same track record. But Hahn hasn't dumped anyone for far-off prospects. He turned Peavy into Garcia, a major-league ready RF. He turned Santiago into Eaton, a major-league ready leadoff guy and CF. He traded Addison Reed for Matt Davidson, an almost-major-league ready 3B. Davidson could still come up this year and supplant Gillaspie at 3rd. The Rios trade was largely a salary dump, but it made way for Avisail Garcia in RF, and gave us a switch-hitting utility infielder. If the Sox were buyers, what would they need? A quality starting pitcher, a couple of bullpen arms, and someone better in the outfield than De Aza or Jordan Danks. That may be all that is required to contend until the end in the AL Central. The Sox won't have to mortgage the future to go this route. Dunn is going to be a free agent anyway, and wouldn't return much as a late-season rental. John Danks is the only other player with a rich contract, but he has shown enough so far that, with a little more improvement, might be worth keeping. Trading Beckham wouldn't be selling, it would be turning an asset where we have a ready replacement into strengthening the team somewhere else. Until the Sox are out of the race, I'm going to think of them as in the race, and hope the Sox act accordingly. I will trust what Rick Hahn has told us. If something presents itself that nets the Sox a young player, locked up for multiple seasons, that could be seen as part of the solution going forward, he will make a deal. If not, he probably won't. For example: I think Hahn would be open to dealing prospects for a guy like Padres C Yasmani Grandal that could be seen as a core piece for years to come. OTOH, I couldn't see him trading a couple of young players for a SP in the final year of his deal to try and win this year.
  22. The whole thing is pretty disgusting but anyone that thinks Sterling is the only owner in pro sports that feels that way is delusional. He is an old bigot that will never change. Something humorous that I saw on ESPN was Chris Broussard up in arms over what Sterling said. Broussard should understand how Sterling feels. He hates gay people for no apparent reason. What a hypocrite that clown is.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 03:48 PM) Olympian Meghan Duggan before throwing out first pitch at last night's Red Sox/Yankees game: What a dumbass broad. She should've put on an Ortiz jersey and intimated a needle going into her arm. People are idiots.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) He talked a lot of about how awful his time with the Cubs was the other day as well. Their time with him was awful too though. Matt Garza is a lunatic. Glad he's on the Brewers for 4 years so there's no chance of him ending up with the Sox.
  25. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) Please don't patronize me. You were happy the Sox bought corn in somebody's stool when they signed Paulino. It isn't pointless. I just want to know why the 2nd round pick was considered so valuable before, but now it's "the Sox will be lucky if higher picks work out, but it's not just them it is everyone". I'm not trolling, just wanting to know why people changed their minds. Dick, are you in favor of the Sox drafting Rodon if he's available?
