QUOTE (juddling @ May 28, 2014 -> 06:31 AM) Saw an ad last night for a new series on NBC starring John Malkovich as Blackbeard ( show is called Crossbones). The ad looked pretty good but I got to wonder why the F*ck would NBC pick Friday night to air the show???? I know with DVR's and such that Friday nights aren't quite the wasteland they used to be but still???? Friday nights???? I hope this show takes off or at least NBC doesn't kill it too early.... I was reading Entertainment Weekly this morning on the elliptical and the writer gave it a D- and said it's awful. Obviously just 1 source.

  4. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 28, 2014 -> 11:27 AM) LOL, so fired up. Easy fella. Man, Rock. I saw that you were the latest post in the thread and thought that you had some Beckham news.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 28, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) In the end, he went to the highest bidder, did he not? I can just as easily credit Alexei and Dayan Viciedo for using their influence (which they used). Adolfo's a million miles away from Chicago. We need 3-5 of them every international signing period for those efforts to bear fruition. As far as Marquez and Walker, I was just listing players who we were hyped into believing in by the press/Sox p.r. Haha okay. You could actually come up with a pretty long list of guys hyped by the Sox that ended up being not very good.
  6. I went on a Field Trip yesterday with 7th graders to Springfield. They bickered like this the whole ride back. I thought I had escaped...then I read this thread. Good grief.
  7. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 27, 2014 -> 06:56 PM) So if we draft either Aiken or Kolek, where do they start playing, assuming we can sign the winner? Rookie League, Kanny? If it's Rodon, I bet he starts at AA. We do have the half season team out in Arizona. I would imagine they'd get some innings there. If Kolek is the guy, he will most likely learn a cutter within 10 minutes of signing as well.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 28, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) I give Hahn a lot more credit for pulling the trigger than Paddy. Anyone could see Abreu's talent. It's finding undervalued guys like Alexei Ramirez and Tadahito Iguchi that's MUCH more difficult. Plus, I'm still not over Nestor Molina and disappointed that we put any faith in him, Zach Stewart or Jeff Marquez ever amounting to anything. Keenyn Walker, too. We only know that name because he was the first player drafted that particular year. Bucket, who has been pretty plugged in over the years, is telling you that Paddy was instrumental in signing Abreu. Why don't you believe that? Paddy also was believed to be the driving force in signing Micker Adolfo. Paddy wasn't in the organization for Zach Stewart I didn't think and where did Jeff Marquez come from related to this topic? Marquez came from the Yanks for Swisher.
  9. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 27, 2014 -> 12:57 PM) Reed's had a weird start to the year and if we hadn't all seen him pitch the last few years it would be hard to explain. He has a 4.62 FIP, as you mentioned, but his xFIP (with a league average HR/FB%) is only 3.14. Basically xFIP is sayin ghe's been extremely unlucky on HRs -- however, we've seen Reed pitch and we know this version of him. It's the version that has a 96MPH heater and not much else. When that version comes on teams sit on the fastball and when he grooves one (he's not exactly Greg Maddux with his command) it gets hit hard. Now, he also has a K/BB ratio over 3/1 and is striking out over a batter an inning, so his stuff is still there. But his season is pretty much exactly why Chicago traded him -- he's a good reliever but far, far, far from a "dominant closer". He was about to get way overpaid for being "a closer" and the time was ripe to trade him. Now, Davidson might not pan out, but getting a top 100 prospect that has a 50/50 chance to develop into a solid everday 3B is way more valuable than a 1-2 WAR reliever, ESPECIALLY on a team that has Don Cooper as the pitching coach. The Sox turn turds into gold quite often with Cooper, but they don't have much success with infield prospects. Getting a guy that was near MLB ready was a no brainer for Reed. tl:dr Reed is only a good reliever, not elite, Sox produce those guys on the reg and he was about to get way overpaid, getting Davidson was a fine return, even if it doesn't pan out the thought process was good. This is a great post by the way.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 27, 2014 -> 05:43 PM) I'm perfectly willing to revisit this in August. Maybe the errors don't mean anything and the White Sox are 100% committed to making Anderson the starting SS after Ramirez, and aren't 100% believers in Semien's ability there. To make ANY kind of determination, I'd have to go back and watch video on all those 20+ errors to see what's going on. For that to happen, though, he's going to have to be 750+ OPS bat in the minors, at a minimum. Anderson also gets to more balls than most guys do.
  11. Like Jeter, I wish that today was also Paul Konerko's last game at U.S. Cellular Field. I'd much rather have Gillaspie at 1B, Semien at 3B, and Dunn DH.
  12. Daniel Webb is better than Addison Reed is. For some reason, Webb isn't closing but the White Sox basically acquired one of the better 3B prospects in the game and get to control him for 6 years for a Relief Pitcher whose numbers could be duplicated and surpassed by at least 1 member of the current team. Sounds like a damn good trade to me.
  13. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 25, 2014 -> 07:17 AM) Are you telling me that he wouldn't undo the Reed/Davidson trade, if he could? There is no way that he would. You are overrating Addison Reed. Joe Ostrowski ‏@JoeO670 16h Here come the Addison Reed calls. Umm, Reed's ERA is 4.57 & he's given up 6 HR. He gave up 6 HR all of last year. Btw, 4.95 FIP. #WhiteSox I'll pass.
  14. QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ May 24, 2014 -> 03:04 PM) 1. Aiken 2. Rodon 3. Jackson 4. Nola 5. Freeland 6. Kolek Kolek seems like a Tommy John waiting to happen and not sure he'll keep the weight off of his frame as he matures. I know the Sox won't take Jackson but I think he'll turn out to be a very good pro. Any pitcher is a Tommy John waiting to happen.
  15. Nola over Aiken would be a nightmare scenario. God I hope that doesn't happen.
  16. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 22, 2014 -> 11:32 AM) Who are the three infielders most likely to become major league starters? Those are the three guys who need to be starting at 2B/SS/3B for Charlotte. The rest can either DH at Charlotte or start at Birmingham. I guess it just depends on what they think of Carlos Sanchez.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) BA (Ben Badler) now has Sox as favorite to land Huascar Ynoa (RHP, DR), their #9 prospect for 7/2. Article behind paywall. Good to hear. I was wondering about this.
  18. QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 22, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) It appears most people on here (me included) have Kolek at #3 in their preference, so sure if he goes 1-1 that's great. If Rodon and Aiken are off the board, I'd be fine with Kyle Freeland or one of the bats at #3 instead of Kolek. I just don't want Nola or Beede instead of Kolek.
  19. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 22, 2014 -> 10:36 AM) Yeah you don't sit this guy. If they aren't going to clear a spot for him by jettisoning a vet then he needs to play every day in Charlotte. I mean not only is he not getting PAs but he's accruing service time. Why? Sox are idiots good % of the time these days. Who isn't going to play everyday in Charlotte then though? I agree that Semien needs to be in Charlotte. Micah Johnson is at 2B every day. Matt Davidson is at 3B every day. Carlos Sanchez is also there. Would they do something with Dan Black and just have one of the infielders DH? I know it's easy for us to say that Semien trumps all and should be at SS down there but that leaves Carlos Sanchez and Tyler Saladino with nowhere to play.
  20. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ May 22, 2014 -> 02:13 AM) Anyone before us taking Kolek is best. I'd much rather take Kolek than a guy like Aaron Nola though. Swing for the fences rather than some safe college arm. I'd be okay with Freeland over Kolek at #3 but if Rodon and Aiken go 1-2, it could literally be anyone for the Sox.
  21. Gillaspie is a platoon player. I would hope Davidson gets it together and starts at 3rd in 2015.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 22, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) He needs work and reps. That is all there is too it. Let Leury rot on the bench. Where is Semien going to play at Charlotte with Davidson, Johnson, Saladino, and Sanchez there already?
  23. So I take it Noesi will go into the bullpen now and Carroll stays in the rotation for the time being?
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 21, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Or it's just erasing $6 million in revenue loss due to lower attendance. It's a risky endeavor to invest in pitching in the FA market. We're already seeing signs of Verlander deteriorating many years before the end of that deal. Scherzer, Lester and Shields...I can't see us touching those guys. And Masterson supposedly turned down $50 million for 3 years from the Indians but for the White Sox to commit let's say $80 million over even 4 seasons to him...they were willing to gamble on Tanaka because of his age and ace potential, but based on what he's looking like so far this year, would anyone jump up and down with joy getting Masterson for $80/4 (were he to continue putting up relatively pedestrian numbers)? Last year, he was very good, better than Quintana. But this year, he's giving up more hits than IP, a WHIP of around 1.5 and a 5+ ERA. Maybe the looming contract situation/FA is in his head (see Sandoval in SF), but that disappearing ability "disease" has infected Carlos Santana, Bourn and Nick Swisher as well. http://www.indiansbaseballinsider.com/blog...easonable-63355 Joe Chengery March 23, 2014 - 10:59 PM EDT While the shorter length (and virtually no one thought they'd take a two-year deal, and the preference for them really is three) helps, it's still a risk, and still a lot of payroll to tie up in a guy who has not put up back-to-back good seasons, and is a borderline frontline starter (i.e. #2) at best. Signing Kazmir would have probably been more prudent; as I said before, the length of Ubaldo's contract would have made me shy away, but on the other hand, Ubaldo has matched or outdone Masterson over their careers, and it was a reasonable bet he could maintain a level of success here. Would it have been as good as the second half of 2013? That probably wasn't likely because very few pitchers stay in that "hot zone"- even Verlander hasn't been as dominant as he was a few seasons ago, but I think with (Mickey) Callaway's guidance and familiar surroundings, Ubaldo could have been a consistently good starter at a lower cost. I'm not as sure of that elsewhere; like I said though, I would have preferred Ubaldo at three years plus an option, but that turned out NOT to be an option in the end. Keep in mind that no one expected Masterson to take a two-year deal, and the only real reason he's doing it is because of a possible change in the QO in the next bargaining agreement; taking a shorter contract would still enable him to still get a larger contract while he's still in his prime. A QO would probably affect his value since his track record is no better, and arguably worse, than Jimenez and Garza, so the shorter p-length contract is a calculated move on the part of Masterson and his agent, just as it was to make it seem as if the contract offer is a discount, when in reality, it isn't. Seth, I still don't think Masterson's 2013 was that great; his 2011 was better, and his 2012 wasn't much better than Ubaldo's and that's where the rub is- can Masterson put together back-to-back strong seasons, presuming 2013 was a strong season? (I think Ubaldo had the stronger, more consistent overall 2013, along with a healthier 2013). If Masterson can put together a strong 2014 (more like he did in 2011 with better command, since I'm not confident his H and K rates will be as strong in 2014 based on his track record, necessitating the need for better command), it will be the first time he's done that in his career. I think that is a major reason why the Indians are hesitating - which Masterson are you going to get- the strong three, borderline two starter like in 2011 and parts of 2013, or the inconsistent 4-5 starter you got in 2012, and even parts of 2010 and 2013? That's why they don't think putting down 1/6 to 1/5 of this year's and next year's payroll is the best idea, especially when other salaries will be increasing next year (including Kipnis, who they want to sign long term, plus any upgrades the Indians may need next offseason. Signing Masterson to such a contract may tie their hands to the point where they won't be able to sign anyone of significance, even a Murphy-level signing). Tanaka didn't cost any draft pick compensation though. I would be shocked if the Sox signed a player next offseason that cost the team a draft pick.
