I want two games obviously, but the season is all but over if we get swept. If we can just get one W, we are in the drivers seat although it will be neck & neck to the finish line.

Newcomb + Burke vs. Williams on the mound. The Sox enter the series just a 1/2 game up on the Guardians. Winning at least one game is absolutely essential. If we go 1-2, we’ll be tied in the loss column, but will have secured the season tie-breaker. While the Guardians would technically be up 1/2 a game on us, we’d effectively be up 1/2 game like we are today due to the tie breaker. At minimum, we can’t leave Cleveland without at least securing one W. If we can somehow leave the series with at least one W, we do have an easier schedule to end the season. Both teams play three games against KC on the road. Both teams play bottom three teams at home with us getting the Rockies and the Guardians getting the A’s. The big difference is we have four games against the Tigers at home while the Guardians have three in Boston. Obviously you still have to play the games and Sox aren’t playing well right now, but every little edge matters at this point. Finally, we really need to come out focused tonight. This is the game we have the best shot of winning IMO. Burke has had two stinkers in his three starts and appears to be wearing down, but remains our most talented SP and the guy I’d put out there in a win or die moment. Williams is obviously very good, but the Sox face two lefties who have dominated us this season the next two games. It really feels like if you don’t win tonight, then you’ll be facing an uphill battle the rest of the series. Venable must do everything in his power to win the game tonight. Let’s fucking go!

It’s just wild that Getz went out at the deadline and acquired an expensive player who has made our team materially worse. That is legit hard to do.

Garret Guest was the other finalist for the job when Shirley got promoted, so I could see it being him. Just not sure if he can handle that level of responsibility given the he commits to pushing Jeep Wranglers and hyping up Kelenic on Soxtalk.

The lack of business acumen here is truly astounding. The simple reality is a better stadium will draw bigger crowds allowing for bigger payrolls and a more competitive team. A new stadium should also provide a better fan experience than the one we get today. Not sure why we should all settle for a “perfectly fine” stadium when our future owner is willing develop a better one on his own dime. The bulk of your concerns really make no sense and it feels like you are just trying to be contrarian for the sake of argument.

I think it’s very clear that Getz both panicked at the deadline and backed himself into a corner by prioritizing control. I’m sure anyone worth a damn, even rentals, had outrageous asking prices to start and Getz didn’t want to give up those guys. Unfortunately, negotiations almost always start off with highly unrealistic demands and the deadline is no different. Had he been willing to wait it out more, he probably could have gotten a better SP at a lower cost for Boston Smith. Instead, he likely jumped on what he thought was the more affordable option at the time, well before the actual deadline. Anyone with the slightest ounce of objectivity could tell that trade was an L from the get go from a cost-benefit perspective. And to no one’s surprise, fixing players mid season is hard and Castillo has been a disaster. At this moment, making no trade would have been better than the “innings” Castillo is giving us. Getz deserves to be ridiculed for this trade because on paper it was really bad and even worse in reality. The Doyle trade was also super bizarre and even a bit cocky I’d say. Don’t get me wrong, the dude has some serious tools, but has been a disaster the past two years and was going to be a massive project with the bat. To think they could fix him down the stretch reeks of arrogance and it’s not like the cost was just money. Mason Adams was a top 15ish org prospect and is a better a major league pitcher right now than Luis Castillo. To weaken our biggest area of need (SP depth) to add a project 4th OF when you had a young controllable OF who was crushing LHP when healthy just never made an ounce of sense to me. Yes, Periera is made of glass and maybe they didn’t like his CF defense, but that is such a niche need and a questionable way of addressing it. Ultimately from these two moves, Getz weakened the current team’s rotation and lineup against LHP to improve the OF defense when Peters is sitting. And to make that trade-off, they took on considerable money for next year. I ripped both trades the second they happened and it has nothing to do with hindsight. I also applauded the Brazoban & Bart trades and continue to do so despite the results not being there. There is good process and there is bad process and it’s clear as day that Getz had a bad plan at the deadline, executed said plan poorly, and it’s proven costly right now. I can support not trading your key prospects when you’re competing a year earlier than expected, but there were better trades to be made with guys like Boston Smith, Mason Adams, and others in that tier. I’m not sure how anyone could be arguing otherwise here.

Yup, and Ishbia is going to finance the bulk of it himself. The Sox aren’t staying at the current location, so while I feel bad for Bridgeport residents, this day was always coming. At least now, the new stadium will remain in Chicago, at a better location to attract casuals & out of towners, and will be an absolute stunner.
