I’m 100% convinced we land him tomorrow or Friday. The offers he wanted are frankly not coming and he probably dropped his 10/$350M demand to something far more reasonable. By doing so, the Sox are also willing to bump up their offer and finally get this done. I’m predicting 8/$260M will be the final number with some combo of opt-outs & swell-opts.

The best part of this is who exactly is supposed to be his source? Like no one other than Harper or Boras knows if he’d be willing to settle for a 2 or 3 year deal and if so it would likely be with the Cubs. But at the same time, he’s tweeting about potential Heyward trades to the Giants. It should be clear as fuck to anyone that Charles the Cat is just making shit up or is the most connected dude in the world.

Apologies if my scenario wasn’t clear. What I’m proposing is Machado would have the right to opt-out after four years if we don’t guarantee another year (or potentially even two) to the backend of his deal prior to that point in time. By guaranteeing that year or two, we could delay has opt-out until after year five. So the base contract would be 8/$280M, but our swell-opt would push it to say 9/$315M. Machado could leave after year five and having earned $175M or could stick around for essentially a 4/$140M contract for his age 31 to 34 seasons.

This may sound dumb, but I’d rather give Manny 8/$280M w/ an opt-out after four year and a swell-opt that can push it to five years by exercising an option than go 7/$210M but give him a straight opt-out after two. Given where we are in our rebuild, pay the fucking premium and buy an extra year or two of guaranteed control.

Nice article, I would rank the guys in the same exact order. To me, Adolfo & Basabe are a step above the others at the moment. Both have tremendous upside and loud tools. I really like Gonzalez, but need to see how he responds to AA. With a strong showing, he could pass those other two assuming he can stick in CF.

You might end up being right, but it’s way too early to come that to determination. And even if he ends up a 1B/DH, he hasn’t had a chance to focus solely on hitting. The dude has one of the best batter’s eyes in all of the minors and 70 grade raw power, you gave a guy like him a long leash to make the necessary adjustments.
