Adding Gonzalez allows you to allocate your financial resources elsewhere. Marco’s salary next year is $1M and Wood should command $10M+. It all just depends on the price TBH. I would not give up more than a Rutherford caliber prospect for him.

I think they would. Gonzalez provides depth, but we still need a guy at the top to help take some pressure of the young guys. If that forces Lopez to the bullpen or Kopech to AAA, that’s a good problem to have.

It’s a price I’d be willing to be pay given the age, control, and current salary ($1M in 2020). We’d still need to add a TOR starter in the offseason, but would at least we’d enter the winter with more pitching depth than we have right now.

Real question for the board, but what would a Diaz/Nimmo package cost? Would something like Dunning, Walker or Rutherford, and say Pilkington get it done? Would you even do that? Both guys are controllable for the next three years, which fits our competitive window pretty well. The fact that I would make that trade in a heartbeat makes me feel it’s too light despite Diaz’s underperformance & Nimmo’s injury, but you never know with the insanity that is the Mets front office. For shits & giggles, let’s say you make the trade above and then go out and trade Rutherford or Walker and something insignificant for Marco Gonzalez. Here’s how things would look heading into the offseason: Lineup: 1B - ??, 2B - Madrigal (0.5), SS - Anderson (4.0), 3B - Moncada (0.5), LF - Jimenez (2.3), CF - Robert (0.5), RF - Nimmo (5.0), DH - ??, C - McCann (5.0) Bench: UT - Garcia (4.0) Rotation: #1 - ??, 2 - Giolito (0.5) #3 - Gonzalez (1.0), #4 - Cease (0.5), #5 - Kopech (0.5), #6 - Rodon (6.0) Bullpen: CL - Diaz (5.0), SU - Bummer (0.5), SU - ??, MR - Herrera (8.5), MR - Fry (0.5), MR - Hamilton (0.5), LR - Lopez (0.5) That’s 18 roster spots locked up (excluding Rodon) for a total of ~$46M. Assuming a $120M payroll (which is below league average), that would leave us ~$74M to add a TOR starter, setup man, 1B, DH, and a couple bench pieces. Let’s say Cole is unattainable, if the big free agent signings were Wheeler ($18M), Betances ($12M), Grandal ($20M), & Abreu ($12M), we’d still have ~$12M to add a stopgap 1B/DH and fill out the bench. And if by some miracle you could add Cole, you’d just go with cheap in-house options at those remaining spots. Either way, you’d have a young, talented team ready to go to war next year.

See, I would absolutely hate paying that price for Gonzalez. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I’d be ok with preemptively adding a guy like Marco (and adding a second starter this offseason), but it has to be at a favorable price. He may very well warrant such a cost, but if that’s the case just sign two starters this winter. Also, giving Puig a four year deal would be disastrous. He simply hasn’t been good enough to warrant such a contract and we need to find one way or the other to add a left-handed bat to the lineup.

I’m not writing them off by any means, but it’s not like these guys struggled up front and then showed signs of getting better as the season progressed (check the game logs). That’s what what I want to see when a young kid is given an aggressive assignment. My concern is Chris Getz & staff still have no idea how to develop talent. Way too many guys beyond these two regressed in 2019. No doubt Stiever & Sheets have been pleasant surprises, but a good chunk of our full season ball prospects have underperformed this year.

Calling him a “weak #5 starter” is one of the worst takes I have ever seen on this site in years.

And don’t get me wrong, if the price is cheap, I’m fine with adding Marco Gonzalez to add some stability. Just unlikely the M’s will just give him away.

I guess my view is why not just sign a guy like Alex Wood in the offseason to fill this role? Marco Gonzalez is not a Ivan Nova type acquisition like @Moan4Yoan is implying, but when you’re sitting on like $20M in payroll commitments mid-rotation starters shouldn’t require giving up assets other than cash.

Buying low on a high upside, controllable asset is exactly what a rebuilding team than plans on competing next year should be doing. A move like just depends on the price and more likely than not it won’t be a price we like. But in the off-chance they really like a guy like Rutherford then by all means let’s be part of the conversation.
