AL Rookie of the Month/Year watch
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 5, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) I think it does that job just fine. It suggests that Mike Trout is the best player in the game. I think that's pretty undeniable. It also says that, even with the limitations of him playing 1B, Miguel Cabrera is the 2nd best player and the best hitter. It states that (when he's healthy, obviously) that Clayton Kershaw is the best pitcher in the league. I understand if people don't want to use it as an end all, be all, but I think it does a great job distinguishing players' values. Carlos Gomez is valuable but few would argue he's one of the best players in the game. I guess whether you take him or trout is a coin flip?

AL Rookie of the Month/Year watch
I think it's pointless as a tool to rank superstars or even good players, and should never be used as an end-all for determining value. We already know good players are good, because they produce. You can't say player A is "better" than every other player with a lower WAR because players have different jobs. I think it's an excellent tool for finding value in non-superstar players when constructing a team but I doubt front offices give one hoot about WAR.

AL Rookie of the Month/Year watch
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 06:28 PM) I'm saying someone who's primarily a hitter should have a weighted batting WAR, the Gordon Beckhams of the world should have a weighted fielding WAR, the Adam Eatons a weighted baserunning WAR. Yes! You are on to something. It's time to make WAR smart...instead of the big pot of chili it is. If WAR became smart more people would frickin love it.

If we traded for a stud RH starter this year who would it be?
We need a RH badass. I figure the one we select in the draft as a bonus arm. We need a guy for 2015 just like the Freddy Garcia trade. Who should we target for Mr. 10yr Anniversary? Maybe target a team weak at MI.

Tyler Flowers's lucky, lucky month
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 12:07 PM) Absolutely 100% yes. He could hit .270 with the way he's hitting line drives. His new OPPO approach clearly lends to more 2 strike hits, or just more hits in general. I don't think we're looking at Chris Shelton here, but his K and BB rates look like puke fungus may be around the corner. Like others are saying, he looks in charge back there. Comfortably in charge.

Tyler Flowers's lucky, lucky month
I understand BABIP but I don't get the idea that it should eventually normalize over a full season. His K% sucks, his BB% sucks, he isn't showing power. But why can't he keep getting cheap hits all season? All career Mr. Cheapy?

Maddon praises hell out of Abreu/"new" Sox line-up
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 08:12 AM) I can tell you how to get him out: Fastballs in on his hands all at bat. He hasn't shown a willingness to take a walk on those yet. He always swings eventually and jams himself. I think ever since he hit that homer in Colorado, advance scouts musta said something about how he can hurt you inside. But really, that's the best way to get him. Lol. Ladies n gentleman, introducing the baseball scout potentate; advising simpleton advanced scouts since Yaz protected Hawk (the real, lesser-known truth). If you have time, please expand on this idea of busting good hitters inside. Sounds interesting man!

Chris Sale to start Thu May 22 vs Yankees
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 05:59 AM) So true But this pitch count thing, we’re in the American League," Cooper said. "We’re not in Little League. But nevertheless, people that bring up pitch counts are people who have nothing else to really know. And it just blows me away. They’re doing that to say, ‘God forbid if someone goes down, I told you so.’ And these are people that are not in the arena and never really played, so what kind of validity does any of that hold? Way to tell em Coop. Maybe quote of the decade from coop. People love I told you so, like a way to feel smart despite not having to earn the knowledge.

SOXTALK.COM WAS DOWN FOREVER!
QUOTE (scs787 @ Apr 17, 2014 -> 08:41 AM) Agreed. There's just nothing the manager could have done. You can't really anticipate going 14 innings so you can't really go back and say he shoud have kept Belisario/Downs/Petricka out there longer, especially when none of them looked particularly good. Had he kept Downs or Petricka out there in the 8th do you think the story would have been different? Yea I don't think we should ever criticize a manager's use of his pen. Yes there are statistics, like career vs somebody or R/L splits, but that all goes right out the window in game. They have weight but there are like 100 other factors that the sabr dude never considers when he criticizes. I think having an open mind would go a long way in curbing "pen madness".

Semien
How likely is it that Kepp is on a fake DL? How prevalent is that in MLB

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 11:35 PM) He is 22 correct?? He will change once he gets time and understands the game more.. I would say not looking good and still being 2 for 4 is encouraging. Shows how much potential he has You don't know this. I agree, but no way is it anywhere near a sure thing. Hopefully Hahn got players who have higher odds of being productive than some other prospects.

The Official 2014 Opening Day thread
Holy s*** they put Dunn in the opening day lineup. That's f***ing stupid. He's gonna be booed so mercilessly, and since he's proven to be a mental midget type of player, I can't see this boofest of epic proportions stimulating a productive season. Couldn't we have just waited a day? Spare him the shame of 30k+ boos in unison, without a single cheer to be heard? I guess they know what they're doing.

Max Scherzer
I feel like people forget that most teams are trying to win the World Series, not collect top prospects. Every GM with a contending team is always going to make KW moves, and that's a very very good thing to do. I don't even know if that's arguable?

White Sox make second round of cuts
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 13, 2014 -> 09:31 AM) I'm on this train also. But I'll be a lot more confident in this projection, depending on how he starts the MiLB season, likely in B'Ham. With the decline of slugging/steroid usage (won't say the end of steroid-era, because, imo, it never will truly die), according to the numbers, a current stolen base success rate of ~66-67% or higher is a net benefit to the team. This is down from a peak of ~78-80% at the height of the Steroid Era, and, imo, will lead to a sea change of far greater valuation of the speed tool, dovetailing as well with the idea that Speed~=Defense/low BABIP against. A volume base stealer like Micah, if he can succeed at 80%, will accrue numerous extra bases beyond that 66% threshold. I would like to see a speed-modified slugging % become common sabr-lingo, for a number of reasons, including the general knowledge of Slugging % that exists among a broader base of fans. Apologies if such stats are available, but regardless, it seems that other, and more confusing, baserunning stats are currently in vogue. I'll be taking this to the Sabr thread soon, as I have a bit more to say about it. The good news is the system has several potential high-volume base stealers who could be legit prospects, perhaps more than most other teams, and I'm wondering/hoping that we're getting ahead of trend that is not quite fully upon us yet. I'm with you man. I see why many experts look down at our system, but it's possible that after this season we have 10-20 legit prospects/young MLB guys producing. Something tells me we hit on way more of these draft picks and even trades than we probably should have.

White Sox make second round of cuts
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 10:19 PM) Me too. Wish we could just trade Beckham and Ramirez and start the future now!! 1B- Abreu 2B- Johnson 3B- Davidson SS- Semien LF- Viciedo CF- Eaton RF- Garcia That would be such a fun group to watch and they would have a lot of energy That's all I want to watch too. I feel like they all have a good shot at being above average players. I appreciate Alexei but I wouldn't mind getting a more well-rounded hitter like Semien in there; give Bacon the whole year but trade Alexei to the first desperate caller. Roll the dice, we supposedly have MI depth.

Sox vs. Giants 3/12
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 05:47 PM) Dan Hayes @DanHayesCSN 36m #WhiteSox pulled ahead 3-2 on Tyler Flowers' RBI single. Flowers now 2-for-3 today. B7. What's a B7? I hope it's what we start calling Flowers.

3/10 Sox vs. Brew Crew on MLB Network
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 10, 2014 -> 08:07 PM) I wonder if the Dunn haters were complaining about his 2 for 3 & 2 RBI game last week? He was going to left and maybe he will do that more this year Absolutely complaining. Every 2/3 game makes Robin trot him out there to go on another 1/23 streak. Every 2/3 game where he runs into a ball or two makes Dunn apologists like you point fingers at Dunn haters in a condescending manner and also, even worse, gives you hope that he's figuring something out. Let the haters hate. He's paid $15 million dollars on a team representing a blue-collar part of town, bats in the middle of the order and sucks. How can you tell people not to be upset with him during a 1/20 streak? It's ok to say he sucks. He's ours for another year- let the people boo if they want.

3/10 Sox vs. Brew Crew on MLB Network
Only a few weeks until opening day! Only a few weeks until I'm forced to watch Adam Dunn take a whole season to bang out a mere 100 hits. So happy and so sad at the same time.

Under over 75.5 wins
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 6, 2014 -> 04:31 PM) I think you are steering your own boat. He has a point if you acknowledge that only 2 of our starters are locks for 200 innings. Johnson could suck, Danks could suck and the new guy could suck. All very possible.

Steve Stone to be on the Score
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 23, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) He set himself up with TWTW. That was all him, reinforced by him Haha for sure. But deep down we all know what he means. Stats are only half the man.
-
Steve Stone to be on the Score
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 23, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) Stone gives sabermetric stats their due when he can. He doesn't dismiss them, make up his own unquantifiable statistic and then go on MLB Network to argue with a sabermetric friendly analyst about it. You know hawk was right in that whole snafu. Poor guy was set up to look dumb. All he's ever advocated is that stats don't paint the whole picture.

Opening Day Starter
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 08:36 PM) I don't think anyone advocating starting PK on Opening Day is advocating increased playing time along with it....(maybe greg).....it's letting a dude that helped bring us our first World Series since 1917 and a dude that's been here since 1999 - one of the very best White Sox in team history, start his final Opening Day. I understand that some people would like to get rid of all sentiment sometimes, but dear Lord, even if he doesn't want to do it, he should be trotting out there for one last Opening Day. Absolutely. Respect.

Opening Day Starter
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Feb 20, 2014 -> 05:08 PM) How about Abreu at DH and Paulie at 1B? I think that's smart. Avoid the unified chorus of boos day 1; can't have a sold out park with everybody over the age of 8 booing in unison and setting the tone for the year. Our FO is really smart and sometimes I'm amazed at some of our instances of forethought.
