Sox officially sign Rodon
Is there any database where we could find out how Rodon faired vs all college players drafted the last few years? It world be cool to know that he struck out say Shwarber 5 outa 6 times. Sample sizes might be tiny but if would be cool to know.

7/9 Games
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 11:51 PM) Completely agree. I still think he's the guy called up if Beckham is traded. I agree. He's earned more time.

Return for Dunn

Cardinals looking for SP & 2B
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 11:49 PM) I'd drive Beckham to the airport if the Cardinals were willing to give the Sox a bag of balls for him. Haha c'mon man, you know you're just flinging piles of s*** at the wall and watching it drip down here...like any sane man would do.

WHITE SOX WINNER
Abreu is going to have so many accidental homers and tonight's was legit. I'm so impressed with his hammering of mistakes.

Some phrases need official retiring.
I think you should have a soxtalk spike driven into your pee-hole if you suggest a trade idea. It just doesn't work.

Some phrases need official retiring.
Not sure where to put this mods. Can we start a discussion about retiring certain Soxtalk dead-horses; phrases that make one cringe upon reading. I can think of 3: 1. The whole "Hell, I'll drive him to the airport" when talking about one of our untradeable pieces. 2. Throwing s*** at the wall and some percentage of it sticking. We get it, it's clever. But it's done. Indiana, let it go. 3. Trading somebody for an old bag of balls or an old anything. This might be one of the first things ever said on the Internet. There have to be countless others. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time...

Another White Sox Winner
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 02:56 AM) Therein lies the argument. The difference between 80, 75, 70 and 65 wins for a fanbase that knows this is a rebuilding year...in terms of attendance for the rest of this season, selling season tickets for next year and the difference between drafting let's say 4-8 vs. 9-12 in the first round. Half of the battle is getting Rodon signed and and evidence of encouraging results from whatever he manages to do in July and August or perhaps the AFL...they will be attempting to market Carlos almost like he's a free agent acquisition, in terms of "spin" to the media. Does Hahn have the budget (with the season ticket/sponsorship/revenues/attendance falloff) to approach 2015 in the same way KW approached 2011...or will they take a softer, less aggressive approach, not putting all their eggs in the basket of getting back to the playoffs as early as 2015 but pushing the timetable back to 2016-18, when it's likely Hawkins, Anderson and Montas would be arriving on the scene as reinforcements and an infusion of more youth/talent?? While I agree with a lot of what you're saying I fall more in the camp that we can have both. I think we're only a RH starter and a bat shy of being damn scary. If I'm RH (Rick Hahn needs to change his name to James Hahn) I'm doing everything I can to trade for that stud right hander. Use the MI depth to our advantage while we have it. And anything Garcia brings next year needs to be treated as a bonus. One more bat please.

Surkamp called up, Scott Downs DFA'd
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 08:32 AM) The 2 most succesful pitchers the Sox have had the last 15 years, began their major league career as relievers. Buehrle and Sale. Surkamp is a waiver claim. I bet if you asked him, he really doesn't care if he's now a LOOGY. He is probably thrilled, and in the end, a relief role is his most likely destiny. If he was a highly thought of prospect, he probably wouldn't have been waived, and certainly, the entire NL wouldn't have passed on claiming him. Exactly. Nobody is happier than Surkamp and his family right now!

2014 Films Thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 07:50 AM) This is so sad...when crapfest rehash movies like this open huge and a relatively original SciFi project like Edge of Tomorrow bombs in comparison. People deserve exactly what we end up with because we keep paying to watch crap unoriginal sequels instead of going to see an actual good movie, instead. Well, that doesn't apply to me, but it applies to most. Dude yea. I went to the drive-in in east Chicago with a girl a few weeks ago not knowing what was showing. Edge of tmrw was surprisingly badass IMO. I felt like I'd do the same things Cruise's character did.

2014 Films Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 10:39 PM) http://www.boxoffice.com/latest-news/2014-...opening-weekend Looks like the "China strategy" with Transformers 4 is already paying off nicely. Will end up around $95 million, setting the record in China for Opening Day ($38 million) and opening weekend, and probably beating the US/North America total, which is expected to be in the low 90's. Avatar's all-time is in sight, but I would expect the negative word of mouth to prevent that from happening. On the other hand, there's no way this picture's going to make it to $1 billion. UPDATE: U.S. total now predicted to be $102 million, so Chinese box office will be 2nd. Mercy. Didn't the grown men who grew up with Trannys, myself included, basically say no to these movies after a half hour of the first one? Who are these 100s of millions, I've never heard any of my peers say, "go check out Tranny3 bro. Epic"

Why can't Dayan hit at home?
I mean there's the obvious comment that guys try too hard to hit homers at the cell. What your research tells me is that tank has yet to take a step forward.

2014 MLB catch-all thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 29, 2014 -> 02:26 PM) Because they have a parade when a team wins a World Series and the Cubs haven't done that for a long time. Can I nominate this for post of the 2000s?

Closer? 'We don't really have one'
That's probably my favorite quote from robin during his tenure. Translation: "Roles? Have you not watched the games? They're f***ing walking everybody jackass! Roles lol." Playoffs!?

6/28 at Blue Jays
I appreciate Hawk and Stone calling out the people who think getting 3 outs in the 9th is no different than earlier innings. But I understand some people just never played on sports teams growing up.

Who do you most want to keep after the Core 4?
I too think Alexei is the only player that could really fetch us a few serious pieces. I love him, shortstop is hard to fill, but he's just too old and at absolute peak value. Trade him yesterday for a stud RH starter.

Worst nickname in Soxtalk history?
Blowasavio is hilarious. Seriously promoting HotfIRE to the group was the single funniest thing I've ever read on here...and then it went in his sig forever lol. So funny. Where is that dude lately? And to hijack a bit: buckets of Semien is the king of names in my book. I haven't been around since the beginning so I'm curious if there were any other names that rival its greatness...from the days of soxtalk infancy.

White Sox @ Twins
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 22, 2014 -> 04:58 PM) This is exactly what I mean with De Aza. If you look at the numbers, you see one thing. If you watch him play, you see another. He cost the team a run in the field, and he is bunting with two outs in the ninth, in a situation that dictates looking for an extra base hit. He is the hitters version of Javy Vazquez, except not nearly as good. Yes, yes and YES!! Absolutely wonderful example of why we should be thankful our front office doesn't simply use stats to evaluate a player. It's peasant food. I wonder what the Sox FO puts the most emphasis on when evaluating a potential new guy: 1. Eye Test/Getting It Done 2. Character/Work Ethic 3. Stats I think you have to have #1 to draw initial interest, leading then to #2. #3 just comes with #1 usually.

Your Current Top 10
I would probably be a supporter of a different ranking system that focuses on how close somebody is to contributing to the MLB roster. Afterall, that is the idea of the term prospect. Hawkins sure is strong, Danish has the quickest release on the planet, Anderson can hit etc, but these aren't grown men yet, so you have to talk subjective ceilings & floors ad nauseum. Check this out: we don't even know if Adams' body can handle 150-200 IP on a consistent basis and we want to say he's a top prospect for our ML Club. Get to AA, prove your ability to be a healthy horse, prove your dedication to your career, and then let's get excited. I think exceptions to this system might be generational potentials like Harper, Trout, Kolek etc- guys that just have IT, or just enough of IT to warrant expedited ascensions through systems. Unless I'm overlooking somebody, IMO our top 2 prospects are Semien & M Johnson and it ain't even really close. Davidson & Rodon would be the top of the next tier. And part of growing up and maturing is not only physical but mental. Sometimes it just clicks for a guy all of a sudden and he sees the game in a different light. Can't predict that s***.

6/18 Games
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 09:48 PM) If Rodon signs July 18 and only starts 5 times, he's still Top 20-25. Agree. This is the kris Bryant of pitchers.
