PK number retirement game 5/23 almost sold out
Iwritecode replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 21, 2015 -> 09:00 PM) once in a franchise history run of playoff runs You keep dismissing this like it's some unobtainable feat. Yet every other team in the division has done it at least once. The Royals last good run was in the late 70's to the early 80's but it did happen. The Indians in the 90's, the Twins in the 2000's and the Tigers just recently. I don't think anyone expects them to be the Yankees, Braves or Cardinals who seemed to be there every single year. Just get there two years in a row or even 2 out of 4 years. These once in a decade appearances just aren't working. -
QUOTE (Brian @ May 22, 2015 -> 05:26 AM) I'd also be hard pressed to say McDonalds employees don't work hard. Those lunch rushes are a b**** to work. I've worked in customer service for 20 years and never in food service and I will keep it that way. I don't think it's so much about "working hard", it's more about the actual skill that's required to be able to do the job properly. Most minimum wage jobs can be filled by the average teenager with less than 1 week of training. In many cases the employees can be replaced by computer screens. Like the self-checkouts that a lot of stores are going to now. I've read that Mcdonalds is testing out self-ordering stations as well.

QUOTE (scs787 @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:41 PM) Question. I just started a little side job picking up bank bags. It's about 1 hour a day. Boss man told me I get about 100 bucks a week. When I asked if that's after taxes, he said there is no taxes....Is that even legal? I'm labeled as a sub contractor. Wouldn't I just have to pay taxes come tax time? Any tax specialists out there care to tax a guess on what I'd owe if I make 3k from this the rest of the year? Legally speaking, you are supposed to report any and all income. But if you get paid cash and there's no W-2...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) And yet they're supposed to be able to find something better than minimum wage jobs. They are supposed to start at minimum wage and eventually work up to better jobs. There are tons of people in retail making decent money in management positions with only a HS diploma simply because they worked hard and got promoted.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:01 PM) The good news is you can afford to pay that back on a minimum wage salary, right? If you have a college degree and you're working minimum wage to pay back your loans, something went wrong. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:01 PM) And I'm sure you have no problems with your tax dollars going to pay for the health care among the poor right? That's not a cost you'd prefer to not pay as a taxpayer? Because I'd much rather McDonalds pay for that than me. They do offer health coverage. But I assume whether the workers get it or not has to do more with hours worked (FT vs PT) than it does their hourly wage. What if all their employees made $15/hour but only worked 15-20 hours per week?

I keep seeing articles where people are desperately trying to compare this to what happened in Ferguson and Baltimore. Apples and oranges IMO.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 20, 2015 -> 08:38 PM) Nothing makes me shake my head more than fast food workers asking for the wage rate of a college graduate. What's worse is they are gaining traction. I know people with 10+ years of experience that are making less.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 15, 2015 -> 11:32 PM) Anyone know a good RV rental company? A lot of RV dealers rent out RVs. Might want to start there.

Slow pitch softball thread
Iwritecode replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I've always understood the rule for runners in slow-pitch to be that they can’t leave the base until the ball is hit. One guy on the other team kept ending up 3 or 4 steps off the base even when the batter didn't make contact. After a pretty heated “debate” between one of our outfielders and the runner, the umpire clarified the rule. The runner is allowed to leave the base once the ball crosses the plate. If the batter doesn't swing, it’s a dead ball. If the batter swings and misses, it’s a dead ball. Seems a bit nit-picky but I guess that extra split second between waiting for the batter to make contact and just running as soon as the ball gets to the plate may make a difference. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 14, 2015 -> 09:01 AM) Must be pointed the other way then, because I got games almost all of the way to Cleveland in the past. I believe it is. I saw a map a long time ago (on WSI I think) that showed their signal strength and it was skewed more towards the east. IIRC, there is some rule or law or something that they have to do that to not interfere with some other radio signal that is farther west.
-
The marketing is easier and always looks better when the team is winning.
-
I think I actually read that once before. The catcher is the only fielder allowed to be in foul territory when the pitch is delivered.
-
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ May 11, 2015 -> 09:18 AM) WMVP might have the wattage to make it past Aurora but the signal is garbage. The quality blows and runs in and out if you're within 100 yards of a bridge or telephone line. QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ May 14, 2015 -> 08:00 AM) WMVP's signal was awful. I'm from Oswego and it was a nightmare. Live in rural Kane County now and it's a little better but not much. I'll 3rd this sentiment. I hated when the Sox games were on that station.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2015 -> 03:28 PM) This is what happens when even the examples given as to how the White Sox should be run, such as the Tigers, fall apart under closer examination. The Tigers pretty much followed the same pattern as well. Throughout the 90's they were never able to crack the 2 million mark until 1999 (last year of Tiger Stadium) and 2000 (First year of new stadium). Then not much until they went to the WS in 2006. They started trending down in the 4 years after that but winning the division the past 4 years in a row seems to have perked the attendance right back up again. It's not a secret. Teams that make the playoffs multiple times in a short time span seem to have pretty good attendance.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 13, 2015 -> 09:56 AM) If they didn't win the WS again, yes, without a doubt. But if it takes winning the division 4 years in a row for people to attend games, your fan base sucks. Yea it kinda does. The Twins from 1995 to 2001 averaged 14.6K, 17.5K, 17.4K, 14.3K, 14.8K, 12.3K and 22K. Then from 2002 to 2010 they went to the playoffs 6 times and got a new stadium. Their attendance went up steadily until 2011. It's gone down since then because they haven't made the playoffs since. They are on pace for under 2 million this year. I guess their fan base sucks too. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2015 -> 12:07 PM) So basically the White Sox need to spend a five to seven year period as the best team in baseball to get fans to show up. Not best in baseball. Just the division. Or at least 4th best in the AL.
-
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 12, 2015 -> 07:27 PM) "Winning team" doesn't mean just counting the number of wins that our many second place finishes have garnered for us. Winning team means one that makes the playoffs. We did that only once in the '90s, and just twice in the last 15 years under the Reinsdorf/Wiliams/Hahn management team. Agreed. SS2K, you are starting to sound like Coop. Sox fans don't just want to see a team that's consistently over .500 every year. We want a playoff team. There's a huge difference. I'm with Thad that we would see attendance shoot up if they made the playoffs 2, 3, 4 years in a row. Sadly we've never been able to test this theory.
-
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 12, 2015 -> 04:38 PM) that will leave only one team in the Central who hasn't made consecutive playoff appearances EVER - US!! FIFY. I know what you were trying to say with the 1995/beginning of the Central Division, but the Sox have never had back to back playoff appearances no matter which division they were in.

QUOTE (LDF @ May 11, 2015 -> 12:09 PM) i must really be freaking too old to understand the reason this is being liked. sorry. What's to understand? It's a bunch of guys having fun ribbing one of their teammates.
-
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ May 6, 2015 -> 09:28 AM) I didn't realize it the first time I went the through the schedule but we will have played more games against NL opponents than non-ALC AL opponents on May 9th. That wont change until (presumably) May 27th. I hate the new schedules. That's only because of the two PPD games in Baltimore. Had they played those games as scheduled they would've had the same number of games vs. the 2 groups by 5/17.

Slow pitch softball thread
Iwritecode replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Finally got to play my first full 7 inning (plus one extra inning) game on Thursday. They put me at first base and I caught everything they threw at me including a few low throws that I had to pick out of the dirt and a few with the sun directly in my eyes. Even managed an unorthodox DP by catching a runner trying to go from 2nd to 3rd on an infield grounder. I'm glad I played well but I really don't like playing first. Probably my least favorite position besides catcher. My swing was all off because I kept hitting everything off the handle of the bat. I even struck out once on a pitch that was high and outside. I'm pretty sure it was because we were already in the 8th inning and the ump wanted to move the game along. The game before us had gone into extras as well so we were running pretty late. I'm sooo out of shape though. Finally today I'm able to walk around without my legs hurting so much. We have a DH at the end of May that might just kill me. -
QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 09:38 AM) With the poor defense of Avi in right field I was thinking maybe they should give Brian Anderson a 4th try. He could really add defense in the 4th outfield spot. Thoughts? QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 10:29 AM) I did use the green font correctly, no? Almost. Move the [ / color] to the end of your post.

4/29: Sox vs Orioles, WPWR50, free MLB.com, 1PM

QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 29, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) Weirdly, unless Baltimore has a woman on the beat, I think it might be about 120 guys (teams, coaches, media, field crew, scouts) at the stadium and Colleen Kane. I wonder if they are letting the player's wifes/GFs in. Or are they considered part of the "public"? -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 27, 2015 -> 11:58 AM) Too much money going to pitchers to not have them DH. I'd hate if I were a team and I lost my best pitcher because he was hitting (something that he contributes minimally too in almost all cases). All that said, I am not a fan of the DH but with offense down, it probably would be in the best interest of baseball to add the DH. I do think the DH makes baseball more boring though as it negates a lot of the strategy that comes from double switches, etc. I think *NOT* having a DH makes baseball boring because through the first 5 or 6 innings you know you're going to have a battter in the 8th or 9th spot in the lineup that's going to make an out 9/10 times.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 24, 2015 -> 05:44 AM) That is the exact same thing I have always heard. Same here.
