David Robertson calls out Mike Scioscia
Iwritecode replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 09:56 PM) Once the ump said he was out the play was over so there is no way they can overturn that. Did the umps or MLB make a statement about this? I think that's where my confusion is coming from. Either the play should have been overturned or it shouldn't have been review-able in the first place. Yet neither one happened. Unless the decision from NY was that the play couldn't be overturned because the ump called the play dead and took the ball from Flowers? -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 01:11 PM) Yeah, the year before my first kid started kindergarten, our district switched to a calendar that runs 9 on/2 off/9 on/2 off/9 on/2 off/9 on, which leaves 8 weeks for summer break. This is the way I look at it: Everybody else is taking family vacations from July 30-August 12 while my kids are in school. We can take family vacations from October 4-17 while everybody else's kids are in school. Hotels are a little bit cheaper and popular tourist attractions will be less crowded. We're actually coming up to Chicago the week of October 11. I expect the museums to be much less crowded than if we were there right now. I've heard of that before. It's essentially year-round schooling. There was talk of our school district going to that schedule years ago but they never did.

Slow pitch softball thread
Iwritecode replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Well our final game was last week. We lost in the first game of the playoffs. We didn't have our usual players and one guy was only playing because he took a couple painkillers before the game. We played one of the better teams but we did manage to get the winning run to the plate. Just couldn't quite pull it off. I'm just glad that I managed to make it through the season without injuring myself. Looking forward to playing again next year. Bowling will keep me occupied until then. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 12:08 PM) Nothing. A spike like this is all about suppressing demand until supply can rebound. That was my thinking though. Demand is going to start increasing if it hasn't already.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 09:04 AM) So Uribe's World Series 9th inning catch into the stands doesnt get any love? Rizzo made the "catch of the century" against a terrible Brewers team fielding a AAA lineup? It was a really good catch, but goddamn there have been better catches in bigger moments. Hell, Dewayne Wise's catch was better given the circumstances Considering the circumstances, Uribe's catch out-ranks them all. Diving over the wall in the bottom of the 9th of a 1-run World Series clinching game with a runner on 2nd base.

I wonder how much the kids heading back to school had to do with the prices rising? Maybe nothing at all but I know when I was still commuting into Chicago everyday, I hated this time of the year because my commute time always went up with more traffic/buses on the road slowing everything down. Don't know about anywhere else but my kids started back yesterday.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Aug 13, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) That's why I hate replay in baseball. You end up playing imaginary baseball at times. It was clear Tyler didn't throw because the ump confirmed he was out. Anybody who watches baseball knows that the runner would be out 99% of the time on the play, but the other 1% the catcher ends up throwing it into right field and he makes it to third. But because the ump blew a call we don't know what would have happened. That puts the replay guys in tough spot too because they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Either call they make is going to rightfully piss off one of the fanbases. I think replay has helped in getting the calls right more often but there are definitely situations where it gets tricky. I thought the general rule was to continue the play regardless of the call. Which is why it surprises me that it wasn't overturned. But if the ump calls the play dead, are they supposed to continue the play? -

What was the reasoning on that play anyway? It was pretty clear Flowers missed the tag. But when the ump called the runner out, Flowers turned and gave him the ball. I'm shocked it wasn't overturned. -
Mr Robot spoilers: QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 08:04 AM) Good call. Nailed it.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 05:16 PM) I'm not saying it will make any difference but I do know if fans don't tell management how they feel, NOTHING will certainly change. We all know they are already aware of this (and all the other) Sox message boards. It's impossible they don't know how we feel already. But filling out this survey can't hurt either.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 06:04 PM) Here's why liberals think that anyone with a gun will go crazy at a moments notice and start shooting. Its because THEY would do it if they had guns. Projection. I say we start by banning liberals from having guns. That should reduce the crime rate almost right away. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/08/10...n-at-boyfriend/ I thought you were going to link to this story.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 08:49 PM) Extended trailer for they little B movie I'm in. Apparently the Writer/Directer of the movie knows Lowell Dean who made Wolfcop, which I guess has a pretty big cult following. Guess Lowell likes what he's seen and might get this little B movie, with a 3k budget, to take off. Things seem to be getting pretty interesting. I don't know why but I read this post with the voice of Kip Dynamite in my head.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 12:06 PM) This run reminds me of the 2000 White Sox who had the big 8 game winning streak on the road, which pretty well put away the 2000 divisional title. Anyone else? The difference is that in 2000, that winning streak put them 8 games up in the division and they basically never looked back. This winning streak hasn't even gotten them to .500 (yet).

More evidence of Chicago media turning on Ventura

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 01:43 PM) That certainly was an issue for the Sox in 2008. Because they almost completely folded the last week and had to fight for their lives to get to the playoff game to actually get into the playoffs, their rotation was a mess against Tampa Bay. Mark That rotation was a mess before they ever got to the playoffs. They had guys like Clayton Richard and Nick Masset starting games in September. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 09:31 PM) Yes, every post you have made has been very clear. Fans aren't going to games today because we didn't go to the enough playoffs in the 1960's. Or the 70's, or the 80's or the 90's or the 2000's... Even if that's not the point Thad was trying to make, it's not a bad one. Sports fandoms are built generationally (not a real word I know). How many of us are fans of a particular team because we had a parent or a grandparent or an aunt/uncle that was a fan? How many potential fans have we lost because these same parents or grandparents got tired of watching their team lose and never passed their passion down? Take a look at the Red Sox as a perfect example. For most of the 60’s their attendance was horrible. They couldn’t even draw a million fans to the park. Then they went to (and lost) the WS in 1967. After that their attendance started going up, they started making more playoff appearances and several generations of fans have come along. Sustained success over several years is typically what builds fanbases.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 09:04 AM) I think you hit on a key point here. I honestly think that based on attendance patterns, and what respective fans say about their teams, Sox fans don't enjoy the game of baseball as much as others. They enjoy winning, and living vicariously through that, but not the game itself. They won't watch baseball just because they enjoy the game. They watch it to fill something that is missing, because when winning isn't there, they won't do it. I enjoy the game of baseball. I’ve watched other teams on TV, I’ve watched minor league games in person. I’ve watched a ton of (fast-pitch and slow-pitch) softball both on TV and in person as well. From t-ball all the way up to professional. The difference is that when I’m watching those games, I’m not emotionally involved in who wins or loses. When I watch the Sox, I want them to win. When they don’t, I get upset and don’t want to watch anymore. I’m not going to punish myself by watching something that’s just going to make me mad. So I’ll simply turn off the TV and find something else to do. That’s just me personally. I’m sure there are still people out there that can watch the Sox and have a good time whether they win or lose. I don’t think that makes me a fair-weather fan either. I still follow the team and hope they do well. I still wear my t-shirts and hats. I still defend them to my Cub fan friends. I just have a really hard time watching them lose.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 25, 2015 -> 08:01 PM) If we are far enough away that I don't have a shot, neither will the murderer I don't think this is necessarily true. Only one of you is going to care about collateral damage and actually hitting what you are aiming at. While you may not have a shot, he can just point in your general direction and get lucky.

This conversation actually happened at our house one time when our youngest daughter came in with mud on her for whatever reason. Wife (talking to youngest daughter): Look at you, you've got mud on your face. oldest daughter: You big disgrace me: kicking your can all over the place. Oldest daughter and I high-fived while my wife gave us a dirty look. Another time my middle daughter was talking about a ceramic cat that she saw at a garage sale. She said something like "I want to buy it and paint it black." I was like "Ok Mick Jagger." While she gave me a confused look my oldest starting singing (to the tune of Paint it Black) "I found a ceramic kitty and I want it painted black." I was all: It's awesome when a teenage girl knows the lyrics to classic songs that were released before *I* was born.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 04:55 PM) Maybe most of the kids didn't like the fact that their parents didn't attend or cared? I don't know because my parents went to my sporting events when i was a kid. Their was only a handful of times at least one of my parents weren't at the games. Did they stay and watch practice, no, they dropped off and left (or if my sister was along, did something with her while I practiced). And by no means were my parents helicopter parents. I also don't know many people who didn't have parents attend. I rarely played in games where the stands weren't full (and it wasn't random people watching us play little league or AYSO...it was parents and/or grandparents). Now if you are referring to high school, I'd say that would differ and parents would come a lot less often (but that was partly because of the time of day the games were played...no longer all that conducive to working parents). Same with me. My parents were at pretty much every single sporting event I ever played in and for the most part, my friends/teammates had their parents there watching them as well. My parents were far from helicopter parents. I was allowed to walk the 6 or 7 blocks to school by the time I was in 3rd or 4th grade, I was allowed to ride my bike around my neighborhood and I was allowed to play outside until it got dark but they very rarely missed any of my games. Based on stories I've read and movies/TV shows I've seen, the generation before mine didn't have a lot of parent involvement in sports. I'm thinking maybe back in the 60's or 70's. Not so much in the 80's and 90's.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 01:14 PM) Here's the problem. "Oh no, the White Sox would never be able to sustain a rebuild. Could imagine what it would do to the fan base if they had like 4 losing seasons out of 5 years?" Yeah, we've already done that. We're going to really pay for it next year based on how terrible the walkup crowds look this eyar. The "rebuilding will destroy this fan base" threat doesn't work when we've done exactly that without any rebuilding and with a roster that looks very, very far from a sure thing over the next few years. Agreed. The attendance already sucks. I'm sure it could go down more but I doubt it would make that much of a difference. Using Cleveland as an example, they lowest they've gotten in the past 15 years is just a hair under 1.4 million. The only playoff appearance they've had recently was a single WC playoff game in 2013. They've been averaging around 1.7 million or so the past 5 years. Being bad and losing a lot certainly doesn't help the attendance, but I don't think it completely decimates it either. edit: Quoted the wrong post.

I got all of the Batman "Arkham" games at once just last year and played them all in reverse order for some reason. I think this may have been a mistake. I just recently started playing Arkham Asylum and finished the main storyline in a few days. There were a few parts I had to redo 2, 3 or sometimes 4 times but for the most part, the game was much easier than the later ones. Not that the game wasn't fun. It just didn't seem as challenging as the others. There were also a few moves/gadgets that I found myself missing at a few points during the game. The riddler trophies are really the only thing I'm having more trouble with. It's also odd with the main storyline complete that there are literally no more enemies to contend with.
