  1. My personal take on the mock. Rodon or Aiken is best case scenario. Soxtalk will be quite amusing if Kolek is there and a college pitcher is taken instead. Jeff Hoffman to the Jays who have two picks sounds about right. I think Grant Holmes would be a steal at 17 for KC. I also think Newcomb would be a steal at 21 for Cleveland. Nick Burdi would be SUCH a Tigers type pick. The Royals heavily scouting Medeiros is also noteworthy since I think he would be great at 44.
  2. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 8, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) Yeah, if we don't take one of the big three somehow, I am all on board with Kyle Freeland. 106-7 K-to-BB ratio. Was terrific in the Cape League and can throw 92-95 mph with his fastball. He's also a lefty which I'm not sure everyone is aware of.
  3. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 8, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) I bet Fedde ends up in the top 10. I would much rather have Fedde than Beede. Beede scares me. He's so erratic. I'd agree. Beede's stock is down. I think my preference for college pitchers past Rodon is between Freeland and Finnegan at this point in time.
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 8, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) Isn't Fedde ranked in the mid to late 20's? That would be a HUGE reach. Even Beede would be ahead of him on the majority of lists. It depends who you ask and when. He's been up and down this year. But just look at this mock. He's going 8th to the Rockies. Some teams obviously think highly of him.
  5. John Manuel's first mock is up. He still thinks Astros go with Rodon. Miami takes Kolek . Sox go with Aiken. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/201...top-first-mock/ This bit is very much worth noting though. Kind of what I alluded to before. Underslotting a Nola/Freeland/Fedde/Finnegan? Flexibility to grab a signability guy with pick 44 or later.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) Hi, I'd like you to meet Mark Buehrle. Because Mark Buehrle is the norm. I really like Erik Johnson, but the velocity loss is indeed concerning. He was sitting in the high 80's again today.
  7. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 7, 2014 -> 08:24 PM) This. The nightmare scenario is taking someone other than Kolek/Aiken/Rodon Word. See Cubs. The Hoffman injury sucks.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 7, 2014 -> 07:09 PM) That's kind of the nightmare scenario right now. If that happened, you'd have to believe the Astros would take the local product Kolek and we could then select Aiken. How is this a nightmare scenario? Aiken is largely considered to be the best player in the draft class. Getting a player of his caliber at 3 would be fantastic.
  9. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ May 7, 2014 -> 11:33 AM) He doesn't have my guy Medeiros taken in the first 41, nor Gillaspie. Nice. I'd be happy with either. I have to wonder if Kodi isn't on our radar, given our relative fearlessness of funky pitching mechanics. Been on the Medeiros train for a while. Would love him at 44.
  10. QUOTE (flavum @ May 7, 2014 -> 08:44 AM) Casey Gillaspie going to be available at 44? Potentially. Crap shoot after the first few picks really.
  11. One of my favorite draft prospects, Jacob Bukauskas has sent out the ole "don't draft me please. I want to go to college" leverage letter.
  12. Crawford (ESPN Writer with Law) has a new mock up. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/05/the-mock-volume-iv/
  13. QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ May 7, 2014 -> 07:29 AM) Probably nothing to it, but I saw a mock this morning that suggests that Beede is the pick at 3 because he is the best college RHP now that Hoffman is hurt. Mocks should be taken with huge grains of salt lest they come from one of the reputable outlets who have sources on where teams are leaning. (BA, Law, Mayo/Callis etc).
  14. Kiley has a new top 116 up. He notes a top tier of Aiken, Hoffman, and Rodon with a drop off in tier to Kolek. Though he has always been super high on Hoffman. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1400460.html
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2014 -> 05:21 PM) That would be crazy, unless we could sign Hoffman AND one of those two together. Freeland's never cracked the Top 10 before. Nola is almost always listed at 7-11. It would obviously be done in order to grab someone they have a lead on that falls for monetary reasons. Hahn has even mentioned this previously when talking about the draft. Not necessarily advocating it, but I wouldn't be shocked if it happens. Especially if Hoffman's injury is quite serious, and there are Rodon/Boras issues. In a perfect world Aiken/Kolek are there at 3 or Rodon signs for something close to slot. For what it's worth, Freeland has late helium and is number 9 on BA's list, 12 on Crawford's. Think Keith Law is high on him too. Also, Nola has surpassed Beede in the minds of many.
  16. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 6, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) Do we know who the agents (advisors) are for Kolek and Aiken? Is it likely that Boras has all three? We probably would have heard if Aiken or Kolek had Boras. The current Boras players I know of are currently Rodon, Jackson, Fedde, and Conforto.
  17. Id prefer Aiken or Kolek, but would be fine with Rodon at slot. Wouldn't be surprised if the Sox go for a Freeland or Nola at savings to spread money later if Rodon is what's left at 3 though.
  18. Hoffman had a setback. Not making his planned start this week. Stay tuned.
  19. Montas done. 5.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, BB, 4 K Encouraging. I believe Parks has described his fastball as a motherf***er pitch.
  20. So happy I get a reprieve from Hawk.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ May 5, 2014 -> 06:03 PM) Awesome, can't wait for us to overreact!! I'm more excited to see the rumors on who other teams are linked to. Barring something unforeseen we largely know which pool of players the Sox will be picking from. Thus far I've only really seen the Twins attached to Nick Gordon, and the Phillies with Gatewood. Should be fun. I love the draft.
  22. BA's first mock draft will be up Thursday or Friday.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2014 -> 07:33 AM) Cubs would be taking Jackson, with Hoffman going to the Twins. Hmmmm.... This isn't a mock. These are draft rankings.
  24. One month to the draft. Chris Crawford's updated board is up. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/05/the-board-2014-volume-iv/
  25. Kendall Rogers ‏@KendallRogersPG 1m #mlbdraft RT @StevensonFWST: #TCU LHP Brandon Finnegan could've pitched Sunday (he feels fine) but since #Frogs won 1st 2 games, will rest.
