QUOTE (joeynach @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 12:42 AM) Weren't Strasburg and Harper both drafted out of HS and in the majors within 2 or 3 seasons? Now everyday players and All stars. Strasburg was a college pitcher. Also, again, Ervin Johan Ramon Magic Santana sucks.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:37 PM) I don't think that's legal under the CBA anyway. Peavy sort of counts though, although he was still Sox property when neogitations were taking place even if the contract was new. Signing a guy and then trading him after 1-2 years is more likely. Part of the benefit of bringing in Santana would be to provide extra time for Beck and insurance should things go backwards with Danks, Johnson, etc. We'd definitely have to keep him 1 year, and then if Danks rebounds and we trade him, we'd probably have to keep Santana for a second year at least. It's legal, it would just burn a lot of bridges.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) Why are we crafting all these arguments that put the pitcher's ideal wants in mind? These guys are FA because their prices were too high & they had to come down. They are available because they *didn't* get what they wanted. The idea is to make the Sox better, not to make them all happy and so forth. Give Santana a deal that benefits the Sox by allowing them to trade him. If he doesn't sign it then oh well, but to act as if the draft pick is THAT valuable is kind of .... questionable at the least. You're looking at one player whose has never played in a MiLB game and is probably 3-5 years away if he makes it, and at least 1-2 years away from being included in a trade for a veteran player. The odds of Santana doing something positive for this organization would be a lot higher than their 2nd rounder doing anything positive for the organization. Sign Santana, keep Danks. If they both do good things then you can turn around and trade them both, get out of their salaries and pick up useful prospects that you've been able to watch develop in the minors. And if they both suck, which Santana is more likely to do at USCF, you're stuck with his deal.

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 26, 2014 -> 04:02 PM) While I have no begun to look at options for our 2nd round pick yet, I do like what you've been posting about Reetz. Even without knowing what's available, I think getting Hoffman and then Reetz would be a really great start to the draft. Those could immediately become 2 of our top 3 prospects. Yup. Hoffman can likely be in the majors fast, Kolek has nasty stuff, Turner seems like he has a high floor, and then Reetz is an athletic catcher with a cannon arm that most places indicate will easily stay behind the plate.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jan 26, 2014 -> 04:09 PM) Only if you think Melo will sign for like $10 million, less if you want Mirotic too. Edit- A sign-and-trade is possible in theory, but it would involve the Knicks taking back a ton of salary. I have serious doubts that they'd take Boozer back, though I won't rule anything out with the way the Knicks are run. It'd be Boozer then Dunleavy (whatever you can get for him) + picks. If the Bulls offered 3 1st round picks, I think it'd be hard for the Knicks to turn down, since they've traded all of theirs.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
If the Knicks take a S&T of Boozer + Charlotte 1st/Sac 1st/2015 Bulls 1st and then trade Dunleavy for something, the Bulls can actually run with... Rose/Augustin/Kirk (Vet Min) Butler/Snell Melo Mirotic/Taj Noah Then with the Bulls 1st you can try and take someone like Willie Cauley-Stein to backup Noah and someone like LeBryan Nash or Jabari Brown in the 2nd. Nash would backup Melo, Brown would make Snell the primary SF backup, but would give another 3 point threat. I like Cauley-Stein because I think he can fit into Thibs defensive plan. Maybe BG can be brought in on the vet minimum as well, that'd Rose/Melo a lot of 3 point weapons while keeping the defensive big trio of Noah/Taj/Cauley-Stein.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 26, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Even if it's a catcher? Like I said in one of these threads, give me Hoffman/Kolek over Alex Jackson and then Reetz in the 2nd. After doing some research, I like what I see out of Reetz. I'd be cool with Turner as well, but I have much more confidence in developing a pitcher. Your browser does not support iframes.

Apparently Ervin Santana's name was Johan, but he changed it while in the minors due to Johan's success.

If the Sox got Johan and actually got some production out of him, I'd be so stupidly happy. He's the only opposing pitcher I've ever looked at each time he faced the Sox and go "and this is a loss."

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 11:19 PM) There is no better time to start than right now. Plus, do you think the White sox should stop drafting position players all together because their pitches have had more success? When you draft a player you're taking a risk, plus you add in the fact that since the White Sox were opposed to taking advantage of the previous CBA and never went over slot to sign a player , so they were forced to draft players (Mostly College Seniors) that while they had higher floors and were rhetorically less risky in terms of their development their ceilings in terms of their poetential were very low. With the new CBA the Sox can finally get those high ceiling players, and maybe since they have more poetential they might develop into better players. If the best player is tied between a hitter and pitcher, Sox need to take the pitcher.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) That's fine. Stick with what you know. Not sure what number pick the 2nd round pick is, but maybe that's where they take a high ceiling position player. 43rd pick, which is why I want Reetz there as he is an athletic catcher projected to go in that slot.
