2013-14 off season player movement thread
Are the winter meetings secretly this week and the GMs are all going on Space Mountain next week instead? Lots of activity last few days. I sure hope the winter meetings arent as boring as they were last year.

Hahn says trade talks have heated up.
I wish I could be a fly on the wall in just one staff meeting leading up to the GM meetings, so I could know what the hell the Sox are doing/planning/wanting our of their roster next season.

Twins out, Red Sox in on Pierzynski
QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 09:41 AM) Pete Abraham @PeteAbe 10h Sounds like the Jarrod Saltalamacchia situation is percolating. #Twins, #Marlins, #RedSox https://twitter.com/PeteAbe what the hell does that even mean?

Dan Hudson Non tendered
Why don't the Sox just release everyone and sign all the non-tendered players that the other teams didn't want.
-
White Sox Re-Sign Tyler Flowers
Tyler Flowers still has an option remaining. Re-signing him means nothing other than he won't be playing for another team next year.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 11:31 AM) The Sox merely have to hope that the Marlins pass on Carlos Perez and they will have a chance to get a guy with a career .280/.365/.395/.760 in the minors. I'd rather they not trade for anyone, take him, re-sign Flowers, and go into camp with 2 of the 3 breaking camp with the Sox. Tyler Flowers minor league numbers: .275/.391/.484/.876 Carlos Perez isn't an every day major league catcher and will be terrible if the Sox expect him to produce better than, or even the same level as, Phegley or Flowers. So ya, let us just forget about this awful idea.

Cardinals and Peralta close to a deal
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 23, 2013 -> 10:57 PM) Dodgers? They have Hanley, but they don't have a 3B either and Hanley could easily slide over. Could be some sort of older Cuban mentor for Puig too. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind getting a package back that included Dee Gordon. Hasn't looked great in the majors so far, but he's demonstrated he can be a pretty productive hitter in the minors. Just needs to put it together and change of scenery could be good for him. Obviously not the only thing I would want in return for Alexei. Only other team I can think of is the Pirates. They have a plethora of young players we could want in return. I am as much of a Dodgers fan as I am a Sox fan, so let me just say that. Also, with MLB.tv I watch almost all Dodgers games I can (living on the east coast makes it hard to watch all of them). I can tell you this, Dee Gordon is terrible at playing baseball. Terrible.

Frank Thomas: "I could have won 4 more MVP's"
I'm a little late to the party and didnt see/read Frank's comments - but is he essentially saying that IF he used PEDs, he would have won 4 more MVPs... or that if PEDs weren't used by other players, he would have won 4 more MVPs?

Rule 5 decisions coming soon
QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) Guys with no power and no defensive ability have little chance of starting. He sounds like a dead-broke man's Keppinger to me. Fixed it for you.

White Sox Sign Alex Liddi
QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 15, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) Not that it means a whole lot, but it probably cements Brent Morel getting non-tendered in a couple weeks. Why? Is he out of options? He doesnt have enough service time to be considered a financial liability (yet).

Your Realistic 2014 Lineup
As much as I hate video game GM posts..... I just completed the 2013 off-season in The Show and with budgets and fair trades turned on (so there was at least a semblance of realism).... this is what I came up with: FA signings: Phil Hughes Trades: Adam Dunn to Orioles for a no-face C-grade minor league relief pitcher and a no-face C-grade backup AA catcher Santiago, Phegley and a no-face A-grade pitching prospect to Astros for Jason Castro + Kevin Chapman Tyler Flowers and a no-face B-grade pitching prospect to Mariners for Justin Smoak I went after Corey Seager as well, but I didn't have anything left to trade so I had to settle for the two-headed OPS/WAR monster of Gillaspie/Keppinger. Chris Sale Jose Quintana Phil Hughes John Danks Erik Johnson Rienzo / Leesman Webb Petricka Jones Kevin Chapman Lindstrom Reed CF De Aza SS Ramirez 1B Justin Smoak DH Abreu C Jason Castro RF Garcia 3B Gillaspie LF Viciedo 2B Beckham Bench Keppinger Semien JorDanks Olivo (always been a favorite of mine) I'm gonna sim the season tonight. I'm anticipating a record around 80-82.

Jason Castro
I posted in one of the other off-season threads that Rick Hahn's plan for filling the catcher hole should be Jason Castro or bust. A trade with the Astros could also net the Sox a leftie for the backend of the bullpen in Kevin Chapman - a hard thrower with a decent-enough secondary pitch (IE: Coop will fix him).

MLBTR Top 50 Free Agent Predictions
In regards to acquiring a catcher this offseason: Jason Castro or bust. He hits lefthanded, he Sabr-friendly and the Sox can trade from pitching depth with a team that needs pitching. He is arbitration eligible after this season, so he will start to get relatively expensive. Probably a pipedream, but why not think big instead of just signing the best available free agent?

It's been 8 years...
QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Oct 26, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) This was actually a question on Stump the Schwab on one of the first episodes. I am gonna stagger a try. Jose Contreras Mark Buehrle Jon Garland Freddy Garcia El Duque Luis Vizcaino Dustin Hermanson Damaso Marte Cliff Politte Neal Cotts Bobby Jenks Scott Podsednik Tagahito Iguchi Jermaine Dye Paul Konerko Carl Everett Aj Pierzynski Aaron Rowand Joe Crede Juan Uribe Chris Widger Geoff Blum Willie Harris Timo Perez That's 24. Who am I missing??? Ross Gload? Brandon McCarthy?? I still say that 2005 team could have beat anybody else's team from the last 8 years. They played so well.. and "together". Great team to watch and glad I got to be a part of it as a fan. I forgot Pablo Ozuna. OZUNA!!!!!

White Sox acquire Frank De Los Santos from Rays
the Astros bad the "Killer B's" why can't we have the Flying Franks? Other than Frank Thomas (who can probably still hit better than half the league) I can only come up with one, Frank Francisco. *shrug*
