QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 10, 2016 -> 12:02 PM) I wish the idea of the White Sox being asleep at the personnel wheel would die. They have not been afraid to make changes, both on the field and on the roster for quite some time. Just because it isn't happening in the time frame that fans want to see, doesn't mean it isn't happening. Outside of George Steinbrenner, no one really runs a team like that. Ask John Danks if the team is evaluating player performance. I'm not talking about the White Sox at all, nor even explicitly about Jimmy Rollins, I'm talking about Dick Allen forwarding the notion that a team shouldn't change anything if they are winning

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 10, 2016 -> 11:27 AM) It means the game is played on the field. Not a computer print out. What is being done is working. There will be plenty of time for Saladino and Sanchez to play. In fact, I think Rollins was out of the line up 3 games in a row last week. Changing things up when things are going well is silly unless it's an obvious upgrade. Right now Saladino and Sanchez aren't upgrades over Rollins. Maybe at some point they will be. They will still get their shot. What is Saladino hitting? I explicitly said in my comment "whether what's behind him is better is another discussion". Given the options at the moment (thanks Samardzija trade) I don't think it's outrageous he's getting the bulk of the time. It is silly to say, however, that just because the White Sox are winning means they shouldn't be evaluating the individual performances of every player and looking to make upgrades if necessary. With the way they've pitched they could probably have rolled out Paul Konerko in centre-field and been over .500, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 10, 2016 -> 09:09 AM) I don't know why anyone would want to mess with a formula that has worked to 23-10. Things change. A couple of weeks ago, Avi in Charlotte seemed like a grand idea. Now, not so much. Until Saladino shows he deserves more time than Rollins, or Rollins struggles and the Sox start losing just keep doing what they are doing. What does this even mean? If there is a formula, it's coming from players other than Rollins. He's hitting .226/.291/.323 with meh defence. Now whether what's behind him is better is another discussion, but just because our pitching, defence and certain other position players have been excellent doesn't mean we've stumbled upon a magical winning formula that Jimmy Rollins is crucial to, despite not doing anything all that well.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 9, 2016 -> 11:24 AM) Zero chance they demote Engel purely to make room for Basto. This has to be because something is very wrong on Engel. Basto just happens to be the one most deserving of the slot opened up. Any theories as to what that might be? Don't get it purely from a statistically point of view.
-
Very strange to demote Engel. Yeah he has a low batting average but his BABIP is at .225 when the lowest it had been at any other level was .304. He was walking loads and had a 89 wRC+ despite the low BABIP. If it's purely to make room for Basto, I don't get it either, he's not a serious prospect in my eyes.

Brewers promoted him to their major league roster. Annoying we lost him for nothing for no real reason, could have been a contender for our 5th starter.

Difficult to be too concerned with Sale given his numbers, and I know it's somewhat the plan, but you have to wonder how long Sale will get away with throwing 90mph fastballs in the zone -

Not to be harping on about it but Navarro has lost about 5 strikes tonight. Hard to pitch around that. -

Navarro is such a bad framer -
Brian Clark with 2.1 IP, 6K, 0BB, 0R. He's very interesting to me. 2015 at A+: 8.6 K/9, 3.84 BB/9, 67% groundballs 2016 at AA: 9 K/9, 0.69 BB/9, 51% groundballs He's not starting (although he has done) but he's doing about 2 innings each time out with Birmingham.

Miguel Gonzalez getting called up, Danks skipped
Feeky Magee replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 11:56 AM) The entire premise of your point is the peripherals you have admitted you shouldn't have used. No the entire premise of my point is that a) an 8.44 ERA is already very high. To say he deserved worse is extreme and b) MLB pitchers, even those getting hit hard, still don't deserve over half the balls in play fall for hits and I think this means overall he was quite unlucky, despite not pitching well It's not exactly a controversial opinion: guy who struck out 6 and walked 2 (while getting squeezed by a terrible ump) and at the same time got hit hard probably didn't deserve ERA worse than 8 and a half -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 11:48 AM) Quoting a 3.94 SIERRA after last night's game, isn't a great endorsement for SIERRA. I've also said repeatedly I shouldn't have quoted peripherals like that for one game. But I stick with the basic premise that he didn't get lucky, as you claimed. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 11:45 AM) If you or I or any random Soxtalk poster hit the mound, we would get hit hard, not because of luck, but because we sucked. We're not talking about you or I, we're talking about one of the best 150 or so best pitchers in the world. Once you're at that level, you can start making assumptions about what should normally happen to their pitches. In a hypothetical where we play that game over and Gonzalez throws the exact same pitches you think his BABIP is .526? QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 11:48 AM) Danks got lucky he gave up only 2. If you give up rockets, you are the lucky one if they are hit right at someone. It isn't lucky your shot finds a place to land. This is true to an extent, but there's a medium in between "I got hit hard, I deserved to give up some hits" and "I deserved to have over half the balls put in play to land as hits". -

Feeky Magee replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 11:40 AM) So according to FIP,xFIP and SIERRA, the pitches he threw should have resulted in 2.60 runs, 2.68 runs, and 2.33 runs allowed respectively. That's pretty silly. Look I shouldn't have quoted them over the sample size of a game, I was just making the point that to say he got lucky was silly. Danks was hit hard in his last start but they got 2 runs. Grounders found infielders and liners found outfielders. You can give up a lot of hard hits and still not deserve an ERA over 8.
