QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 04:51 PM) If push came to shove, I'd pay some of Contreras's salary and still deal Garland. I honestly can't think of one good reason why Garland should not be traded to the highest bidder this winter. He's a good pitcher, yes, but I really don't think there's any shot of him resigning, and he's as prone as any pitcher the Sox have to either be good or to get completely torn apart. Contreras's presence on the club should have no impact on whether Garland goes. I think there's a good chance Garland would re-sign with us right now actually. His best buddy Buehrle is here with the team for another 4 seasons, and he's always done well here, so there are some good reasons. It all depends on the $$$ though. If you did trade both though, you'd be giving 3 spots in the rotation to Danks, Floyd and a battle b/w Sisco, Masset, Broadway, Haeger and Gonzalez for that 5th starter's job. The Sox say they don't want to go into rebuilding mode, and I don't think they could win with this type of a rotation (at least not in 2008), hence why I don't think it'll happen.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 03:25 PM) Impossible. It's just not feasible to have over 45+ million invested in our starting rotation next season, yet alone 2009 and beyond, when there's no telling how the team or its payroll will change. I'm sure you'd rather unload Contreras -- as would many others -- but my position is, unless another team is willing to accept Contreras and his remaining salary we'd be better off trading Garland for a package centering around positional prospects. If push come to shove on this, if we have to eat a few million to deal Jose, I'd rather do that. Good starting pitching is the hardest thing to find in baseball. We've got 3 top notch starters in Buehrle, Garland and Vazquez and IMHO we need to be building the team around that core. This team can be fixed with a few shrewd signings. If we can improve the bullpen (Scott Linebrink for example), and somehow upgrade at SS offensively, this team can contend next season, I have no doubts about that. I'd try to trade a Lance Broadway for example to try and get a young SS into the system who can somehow contribute for us next season, that should be the goal for me anyways before entertaining the idea of trading Garland or Vazquez. Reid Brignac (unrealistic I know), would be a position prospect I would love to have on the Sox for the next 6 seasons.

That's 159K's on the season for Gio now from about 128IP. It's hard not to be real excited about him. His ERA is basically the same away as it is at B-Ham.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 05:04 AM) She's a family friend of ours and she's very cute. Yes indeed. She's got a nice web-site as well. In fact there are some very nice looking female golfers out there, most of whom aren't very well known (or at least down here, I guess Ladies Golf is more popular up there).

Hmmm, it's an interesting idea. More than anything, the D-Backs need SP'ing, and probably good young pitching. I doubt they would be interested in Contreras, unless the Sox paid the majority of his salary (which I don't really want to do at this stage). So would they be interested in any of our SP spects not named Gio Gonzalez? Jack Egbert for example (his sinker would fit in nicely at Chase Field)? And then we've got Brian Anderson, the D-Backs may think if they get him back to more familiar surroundings, he could rebound, and be an excellent 4th OF for them. Quentin had an OPS over 1.000 when he returned to AAA about a month ago. That shoulder injury really hurt his productivity. He's still got 20-25HR potential with the ability to hit .280-.300.

On another board that I frequent, I saw this posted about Arsenal's fortunes for this season, thought it was spot on; The EPL kicks off this weekend as well. I have the West Ham vs. Man City game on live at 11:55p.m Sat Night down here, and it'll be an interesting game just to see all of the new faces for both teams. Sunderland vs. Tottenham kicks off the season in the early fixture.

Anyone know how deep the SP's available in Free Agency this off-season is? If it isn't, some team with a hole in their rotation, may just decide to take a chance on Jose, stranger things have happened before. Some team in the NL in a good pitching envrionment may possibly think he could rebound.
-
I just had the power in my office go off twice in my 1st hour of work. Don't think that's ever happened before.
-
Well it seems you guys have a nice rebound over there, biggest 1 day gain since 2003. Seems the bargain hunters are sniffing around.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 01:26 PM) not saying sisco will ever be a major league starter, but this team could have alot of options for a #5 starter or a guy who can make some emergency starts should someone go on the DL....in 1 year sisco, broadway, egbert, gio, haeger in addition to floyd could all be realistic possibilities to start games in the majors.....also masset could too And they're all better than Dan Wright!!!

QUOTE(3E8 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 12:03 PM) Coop changed his windup before this start, so he doesn't bring his hands behind his head anymore he just keeps them in front of his body the whole time. I assume this will now be a permanent change. Well let's hope this change helped Gavin pitch like he did today, because for whatever the reason it certainly made a significant improvement to his performance. The ball's in Gavin's court now. We've seen the potential he has from today's outing. That should be the standard for him from here on out. The good thing was, it came against a very good hitting team in Detroit, so it's not like he dominated the Giants or some sub-standard hitting team or anything.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 08:05 AM) The big sell-off Friday was not a good technical sign. I think we finally might be getting that official Bear market sell off that everyone has been hoping for. Yeah and the flow on effect is really hammering our market down here. Our Dow Jones equivalent is down about 500 points over the past week, although everyone's calling it just a major correction we had to have, and not a bear market.

He needs to get out of Seattle somehow, and into a ballpark where he can actually post some decent numbers. Still that wrist he had, pretty much really killed his prospects with the Mariners. I hope that's not going to be the case with Sweeney, because I think they're both very, very similar prospects.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 05:56 AM) I dont know about superb. In may he pitched well, had one start in June and in July he is 1-3 with a 4.09 ERA 16k's 14bb. Still considering where he's pitching half his ballgames, I think Texas would be very happy with that, as would B-Mac, although I'm sure he'd like to improve the K rate a little. As for the Young trade, I'm sure right now if we had the chance to use BA instead of Young in that deal, everyone would certainly do so. But would Josh Byrnes had pulled the trigger on that deal if it was Anderson included? There were conflicting stories at the time I remember. This time last season, I don't think many people were happy with it. But Vazquez always had the potential to improve, which he has done this season. So I have mixed feelings on the deal. Very happy to have Javy here, but Young would be a real building block for the lineup.
-
Not a bad outing for Sisco. I still have hope for him. At least he's on the right track now, in terms of being a starter, and being able to develop more control and those secondary pitches.
-
Peter Angelos probably got invovled in the negotiations, which is a deal breaker right there. Really the O's should consider freeing up as much payroll as they can before the 08-09 off-season so that they can make a run for Teixeira who'd be PERFECT for them.

Eggy won his 12th of the season, in a 6-4 win for B-Ham. 6IP, 3ER, 1BB and 8K's. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...ox&did=milb The Warthogs got hammered 14-5. 8 different pitchers were used tonight. Orlando homered for his 6th of the season, Bakker gave up 2ER in 4.2IP. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...potafa_wswafa_1 Kanny lost 8-1. Edwards gave up 7ER in 5IP, ERA at 5.69 now (not really looking like an inspired draft choice). Shelby 2 for 4 with 2 2B's, Carter 0 for 3 with 3 K's, Allen 1 for 4. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...kanafx_lwdafx_1

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 12:30 AM) That's easier said than done. How many leadoff CF or SS are there in the major leagues, and are they realistically available? Fields is going to have to cut down on his strikeouts. If he doesn't, he's Ron Kittle II. Fields is striking out at a rate of better than 1 out of every 3 AB's ATM in his time in the majors this season. So he'll certainly have to improve that, but I think everyone can see that the talent is there for him to become a very good player for this team.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2007 -> 01:20 PM) I'd love to replace JD with Sweeney next year, but even "prospect happy Balta" has to admit that Sweeney's numbers right now do not tell me he's ready for the big time. If JD does leave, we need to have an OF other than Owens and Fields, and our only 2 in house options appear to be Anderson and Sweeney, and both are on the DL and not living up to their promise right now. A couple of scenarios there. The Sox could sign Aaron Rowand to play CF, but then would Owens and Fields both be starting OF's? Who would play RF? Or, the Sox could sign a Jenkins stopgap, someone who can play RF, to let Owens play CF and Fields in LF. Of course the Sox could decide to trade Crede, so Fields slides in there, and it opens up another OF spot. So really a LOT of possibilities here.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 4, 2007 -> 12:12 PM) when was the first one? I thought he had one last season (or I could just be completely wrong here)?

QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 4, 2007 -> 12:15 PM) Another one bites the dust. Haeger did not look like the answer during his brief stay. Bye bye Charlie. Well I think early on he showed something out of the pen, and then unfortunately it just kind of fell apart for him. I think he COULD make it possibly, but whether that's going to be with the White Sox, I don't know.
-
It's always nice to beat Detroit (I think we still have a decent record against this season). Good job by the hitters (Uribe actually got more than 1 hit), and Buehrle was Buehrle again.
-
At this stage, I'd say the chances of him staying are probably 60:40 right now, after what happened at the deadline. He wants a 3 year deal, the Sox are only going to offer a 1 maybe 2 tops. So I think a compromise e.g a 2 year deal with a team option based on incentives such as AB's etc. could be reached. If Dye does leave however, do we replace him in house with Ryan Sweeney, or go for another stopgap in a Geoff Jenkins type of hitter, if the Sox brass feel that Sweeney still isn't ready yet (which I don't think he is either, and I don't know if he'll ever be a regular major league outfielder actually)?

QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 4, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) Josh Fields showing why Todd Jones is one of, if not the worst, closers in baseball. I hate that old fat man so much. I can't believe he's still Detroit's closer. Process of elimination though I suppose. Percival was meant to be the guy, and then Zumaya probably would have taken over if he didn't play Guitar Hero so much. -
Let's hope McCullough can keep his recent good momentum up in B-Ham. And another wrist injury for Sweeney, that's not really good is it.
