Ok I'm going to suggest something out of the ordinary here. Jason brought up the idea of trading Jim Thome. Now, IF the Sox could get Thome to waive his no trade clause to go to Seattle, and we would get Richie Sexson back. Obviously that's a huge upgrade for the M's right there. So if you say offered Buehrle and Thome for Jones, Morrow and Sexson (you could then move Sexson to a contender such as the Dodgers for prospects). Obviously it's never going to happen and it's a crazy idea, but I thought I would just throw it out there. Probably just shows how desperate I am to get some impact prospects into the system. The thing is, if we hold Buehrle up to the deadline and he is pitching the way he is pitching now, the price is only going to get higher and higher, and if there are a lot of teams still in contention that can only be good for us. Remember the A.J Burnett talk from a couple of seasons ago? IIRC the price included B-Mac and something else good as a minimum.
-
If you can convince him to do it, it's certainly an option. The thing is, we're already losing Dye, you lose Thome as well that's 2/3rd's of the meat of your lineup gone right there. It'd have to be a real good offer for KW to even consider it.
-
Now I just heard on Baseball Tonight that Seattle would be VERY interested if Buehrle became available, they ened some starting pitching apparently (Ramirez and Batista not good enough for you Bavasi?). Jerry Crasnick said this about Seattle; Well in order for the Mariners to make a suitable offer for Buehrle, you'd think Jones would have to be included as a minimum. The Sox always have the option of taking 2 draft picks instead. How about people feel about a Jones, Jeff Clement and Yung - Chi Chen offer from the M's for Buehrle? Jones has been compared to Mike Cameron without the walks basically. Acquiring him would certainly make Anderson expendable for some young pitching. Jones has splits of .317/.392/.581 in the PCL, Clement has splits of .244/..340/.469 in the PCL (albeit he's been rushed), and Chen had splits of .342/.388/478 in AA and he's just been moved up. Can play 2B/SS. Brandon Morrow would also be nice, but I'm not sure the M's would move him.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 11:19 AM) I do believe this is what DBAH0 had for next season and it's incredibly similar to my plan so I like it. Yeah pretty much. I really like the idea of Betemit and Greene up the middle. We'd control them for about 3 seasons before they hit FA, and they could be top 10 offensive players for their position in our ballpark. Plus they're pretty good defensively as well which is always a key. Acquiring Antonelli from the Pads gives you a future backup option at 2B or 3B if Fields or Betemit don't work out. Really think the Pads and the Dodgers are the 2 best teams to deal with right now. They could use either a SP or a veteran slugger at the deadline, and both teams have good prospects in their system. All in all the main thing for the Sox to work out here is the bullpen. If it was on track we'd be a .500 team right now and right in the hunt. Until that's fixed, I don't think it matters how good our offense or starting pitching is. Also I wonder about the future of Gavin Floyd. If the Sox keep 3 veteran starters, and acquire a young SP such as Billingsley, would the Sox give Floyd the 1st chance in the rotation next season if he finishes up with an ERA around the 3 mark in Charlotte (which would be an excellent return considering the start he had)?

QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 14, 2007 -> 10:43 AM) I'd rather take my chances with Terrero than Jenkins... Because? Jenkins should be able to post a .825-.850 OPS for us as a minimum in a good hitting environment, maybe even better. Terrero hasn't shown anything except for him small sample size that he can be a capable starting OF. He's nothing more than a backup OF in my mind who can maybe give you a little speed and pop off the bench.
-
Ah what the hell; 1 - Trade Jermaine Dye and Mike MacDougal to the Dodgers for Billingsley and Betemit. I suggested throwing in Crede instead of MacDougal and getting Kershaw back as well, but with Crede having the surgery that's probably unrealistic. Get 2 cheap players, Betemit will eventually move to 2B, and start Billingsley. 2 - Trade either Buehrle or Contreras. Buehrle to the Cards for Colby Rasmus, Jaime Garcia, Anthony Reyes and Bryan Anderson. 1 stud prospect, 2 pretty good ones and a starter whose value is low in Reyes but can be turned around. Of course that's if we decide we can't re-sign Buehrle, and decide to set him loose. Contreras to the Mets for say Lastings Milledge (doubtful considering the Mets rotation has been decent this season), or Contreras and Uribe for Khalil Greene and Matt Antonelli. Greene has a .797 OPS outside of PETCO this season. He'd prduce offensively for us, and give you the same sort of defense as Uribe. 3 - Sign Ichiro to play CF for you in the off-season. Give him what he wants for a 3 or 4 year deal. He'll bring more fan support from the Asian community, majorly improve the OF defense (albeit it's already decent), and give you that speed and OBP threat this offense needs at the top of the order. 4 - Trade Iguchi for the best prospect you can get. Will there be a market for him? I don't know, maybe. The Indians as painful as that would be, would maybe be the best bet along with the Mets. 5 - Trade Brian Anderson to the Marlins for Sean West or Chris Volstad. We all know BA's future ain't with this team. The Marlins are still desperate for a young CF. They're loaded with good young arms, might as well try to nab one of them to keep building our pitching stocks. 6 - Say goodbye to these players. Cintron, Podsednik, Erstad (unless he'll come back for say anything less than 2M). Gonzalez replaces Cintron, Terrero is a backup OF to stay. 7 - Trade Rob Mackowiak at the deadline for a decent prospect. His versatility and streakiness will probably allow for a NL team such as the Padres to make a move for him. 8 - Fix the pen. Easier said than done obviously, but then Sox need to be on the lookouts this off-season to get themselves another Cliff Politte as a minimum. Pitchers such as Prinz and Bukvich should be nowhere near our 40 man roster at this time. 9 - Sign a decent OF in the off-season. Ryan Sweeney will have one spot, probably LF. Ichiro will man CF for you. Be on the lookout for someone who could have a bounce back season. I doubt Geoff Jenkins will be back with the Brewers next season. If he's not a type A FA, go after him. He always has an OPS around the .825-.850 mark, which is pretty decent. Sign him to Dye like deal for a couple of seasons that won't break the bank, but target him quickly to get him to sign.
-
The only way it would be possible is if we traded Mackowiak first. But with Erstad and Pods due back, there's no need for another light hitting leadoff OF option. Plus I think OF wise Terrero has done a pretty solid job while he's been up, got a nice OPS anyways.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 11:36 PM) Great guess. I tried that, but looks like I will have to go back and do it to a greater extent. God I hate that mission. Haha I thought so. The game was actually really easy up to that mission. What I did, load up about 10 APC's, 5 with rifleman, 5 with rocket launchers. Put them in 2 seperate groups and number them for easy access. Use the APC's with rocket launcher to destroy the 2 building near the turrets, and then destroy the center turret. Before that though, move your APC's with rifleman, and get every single building as close to the river as you can get. When you can start moving your MCV, make sure you have lots of vehicles around it. And go east and close to the river AS SOON AS YOU CAN. Probably a good idea, to garrison a building near the bridge as well, Nod will probably barricade it. The hard part, you've still got to keep an eye on your base, especially on the north and east sides. If you build rifleman and get them to dig in on the west side of your base, you won't need to bring those guns online, and you can concentrate on the most part on the vehicles that come from the north and east.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 09:50 AM) Anyone play the new Command and Conquer? Really fun, but just stuck on this level, and really doesn't look like there is any good way to beat it. Yes. I have finished the GDI campaign, and just about finished the NOD campaign. I'll take a guess and say you're stuck on Act 3 Level 1 for the GDI Campaign, when you try to escort your MCV back to your base. If so, the key is to fill up as many buildings as you can near the river with rifleman, so that the Nods guy can't. And when they send fanatics to blow up your MCV, the garrisoned structures will kill em.

That's the best I've seen Haeger pitch for a while results wise. And yeah Dan, Brooks certainly looks like a bust for a 2nd round pick. Things aren't good for him if he's coming out of the pen at Kanny.

QUOTE(southsida86 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 09:00 AM) I'm probably dreaming here, but how about Dye and Crede for Billingsley, Kershaw, Loney and Betemit. Then trade Konerko to the Angels for Wood and Izturis/Aybar/Kendrick. I really think that the Angels would trade Wood and one of those guys for Konerko. The other one is the wacko one. If this were to happen the Sox would have an infield set for years. Loney-1B Izturis/Aybar/Kendrick-2B Wood-SS Fields-3B If you take out Loney, that package is more realistic, and the one that I originally suggested. Of course the Dodgers would have to be interested in Crede, which I wouldn't be too confident in at this point.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 11:38 PM) It's time to trade Dye now And not wait 4-6 weeks for him to get hot?

I thought you would never get there at one point, but congrats Ernsty.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 12:39 PM) This guy is a stud. People get excited about a lot of other guys, but no one has the pure potential/tools that Floyd has (and has consistently shown down in AAA....the command hasn't always been there, but he's consistently throwing in the mid 90's and flashing a plus plus curve). That's very promising to hear. Let's hope Floyd can keep this momentum up, and force his way up into the big leagues for us. It seems like he may be getting things together.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 12:47 PM) since the draft was just this past weekend, i was wondering whether anyone thinks its better to let a few of these free agents just walk? i mean buerhle dye and iguchi will all probably be type A free agents and the sox would get 2 draft picks for each....i guess the downside to that is that it is playing for 09 and 10 rather than helping for 08, but i could certainly see the sox holding on to one or two of them even if they know they wont resign them just for the draft picks i know they are also more risky, but i guess my main point is that if we dont get a good deal for a guy like dye (which given his age and injury history, i dont think we will) or for gooch (who just isnt good enough to bring enough good prospects) a first round pick and a sandwich pick as compensation is pretty darn good if for instance we draft like we did in 2004 (fields and gio in 1st and sandwich) That's the thing, unless we get an offer for one of these players that is going to be better than getting 2 high draft picks, then you hang onto them, simple as that. And honestly I don't mind that, although you'll get the pessimists like quickman saying we'll waste the draft picks or something.
-
Right now you also hope in the next 4-6 weeks, Dye can get that knee 100% healthy, and falt out rake with the bat. Not only is it good for the team ATM, but it'll only drive his price up further. A lot of us thought around June/July was when he was going to pick it up, so hopefully he can do that.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 12:30 PM) Don't laugh at me... but WHY IN THE WORLD would the Dodgers trade Billingsley for anyone, especially Jermaine Dye? I was just watching some video of his starts last year and a few outings of his this year, and he has fantastic stuff. A GM would be brain dead to trade him. With that said, fi the Dodgers offered him straight up for Dye I'd except right there without a second thought. Call me crazy, but I don't think Colletti is even considering trading him for anything. Well consider that Ned Colletti traded Joel Guzman for Mark Hendrickson last season, so he's definitely shown he's not gun shy when it comes to trading his best prospects to help win now. Anything is possible with Colletti and KW dealing with each other.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) what's the love-fest for Betemit about? I like him as well, but he has just been bad since the second half of last year. And why do you think he could automatically play 2B? He has played a total of maybe 10 games there. Also, I seriously question his work ethic and what his range would be like at 2B as has looked fat and slow. He is listed at 6'3" and 230 lbs. Sounds more like a corner infielder to me. The only intriguing thing about him his that he has drawn 23 walks in 96 AB's. But I am not sure what to think about that as he has never been a walk man to begin with. There's no doubt he hasn't had a good season thus far, and I'm sure the people living in California such as Balta would tell you that. But I think he's an excellent buy low candidate. Consider in 2005 for the Braves he hit .305/.359/.435 and in 88 games for the Braves last season he hit .281/.344/.497. That shows what he's capable of at the major league level. A pretty solid OBP (certainly better than Iguchi and Crede) with some occasional power to boot. I think he's a .280-20HR with a .350 OBP type of guy if we acquired him. For whatever reason this season, it's not working for him. But he still has a K/BB ratio of 29/21 which is very solid. And the versatility he offers you across the infield is very handy. Potential wise, he could be on the better offensive second baseman in the league.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 10:32 AM) How about Dye, Crede and maybe a decent prospect for Broxton and Kemp? Kemp's not coming here. Got into a fight with Razor Shines in the minors (fathom knows all about it), and there are questions about Kemp's attitude. The trade I suggested in the miscellanous notes thread was Dye and Crede for Billingsley, Betemit and Kershaw. However, I would also look at a SS spect like Chin - Lung Hu who could take over as our starting SS in late 08 early 09 if he can keep hitting, because he certainly has the defence for SS.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 05:21 AM) Elbert had shoulder surgery this week. Yikes, that's not good for him. Kershaw is definitely the SP spect to target then.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 10:46 PM) Betemit is a very intriguing name. He's not a prospect but could perhaps be looked at as a replacement for Iguchi, although he's played most of his career on the left side of the infield. Still, I'd imagine he could do a passable enough job there so the Sox could maybe even look at sending Iguchi to another team. A couple of contending teams could use upgrades at second -- I know Shapiro likes his young guys, but second base has been a black hole for the Tribe, and I wouldn't mind helping out Cleveland if it meant we get a decent prospect. You also have to wonder how confident the Mets are in the Easley/Valentin combo they have right now, as good as they've been in the early going. But I'm getting waaay ahead of myself. If LA happened to offer Billingsly and Betemit, I jump on that in a minute. If they need a backup to replace Betemit they can take Cintron, too. This is very encouraging, seeing articles with scouts talking about how Dye will be a big addition to a team, how teams are still asking about him despite his struggles and how multiple teams are after him. That's awesome -- let's hope he gets hot as s*** over the next four weeks so we can really turn three months of Dye into some good young players. Speaking of the Indians, if we're looking to get younger and faster, why not swap Josh Barfield for Iguchi? I don't think it would happen, but Barfield would fit the speed need down the bottom of the order. He's struggling this season no doubt, but he has been improving as of late. His plate discipline still needs a lot of work however, but the potential is still there. But yeah I would probably take a deal you've suggested, however I would also try to include Crede and get a quality pitching prospect from the Dodgers in the Elbert/Kershaw mould. So it would be a Dye and Crede for Billingsley, Betemit and Elbert. The Sox could then use Buehrle in a deal to acquire more young players, or a young slugger, as Thome and Konerko aren't getting any younger. By acquiring those type of young pitchers, we could then use a Lance Broadway type of SP spect, to try and acquire a young infielder or catcher for example. So we do have a lot of options to get younger here.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 09:38 PM) DOWN THE LINE Bill Shaikin June 10, 2007 From today's LA TImes [need to be registered]: For L.A. or San Diego, a bat to Dye for? Stat of the week: The White Sox bullpen has a 5.85 earned-run average, the worst in baseball. The Dodgers and Padres, fighting in the tightly contested National League West, could use a slugger. The Dodgers have asked the White Sox about outfielder Jermaine Dye, according to a source familiar with the talks. The Padres are intrigued by Dye as well, particularly because he would bring a right-handed bat to a stadium with a 357-foot alley in left-center. The Sox say they're not trading Dye now, certainly not for prospects, but a quality reliever might change their minds. From the Dodgers, that's Jonathan Broxton or Chad Billingsley. From the Padres, that's Scott Linebrink, the human trade rumor. The Padres would love to get a hitter before opponents start giving Adrian Gonzalez the Barry Bonds treatment. Padres General Manager Kevin Towers declined to discuss potential trade targets, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said he would not comment on trade rumors and White Sox GM Ken Williams did not return a call. --------------------- Any team that wants Dye will have to give up something decent. Esp. as any team the sox trade him to would get 2 supplemental picks. Best case scenario is Dye heats up, and the sox get a nice price for him. If the dodgers offered either Billingsley or Broxton, I'd say the sox would jump at it. I would either of those guys for Dye. HOWEVER, the Dodgers will certainly need to add more for a deal, in order for KW to pull the trigger. Because we can just hang onto JD and get those 2 draft picks for him, unless we get a real good offer. Billingsley they haven't handled well at all this season moving him into the pen. He's still a future #2 starter at the MLB level I think. Broxton will eventually be a closer somewhere, and he's probably the better short term bet. Some other names to possibly add into a deal here with the Dodgers; Wilson Betemit - Struggling ATM as he's only hitting .187. However he also has a .743 OPS, so he has real good plate discipline. Move him into a good hitting environment, and I think he'll really become a solid player. And he can also play some SS and 2B besides 3B, so he's very versatile. Maybe Colletti would have some interest in Crede as well? Scott Elbert - Dodgers #1 pitching spect. LHP, I would be giddy if we could get say Elbert, Billingsley and Betemit for Dye and Crede, although that might be unrealistic. Andre Ethier - I've mentioned him before, I don't know if the Dodgers are going to have room for both him and Kemp over the long - term, especially if they acquired Dye. He's a pretty solid contact hitter, although he's struggling a bit this season. Clayton Kershaw - Same deal as Elbert, either one should be a priority if we acquire an arm. Chin Lung Hu - Has the glove and defense you want from a SS. Hitting is the question, but he's hitting .330 in AA, and has a .862 OPS for Jacksonville. Maybe a possibility?

Players only Team meeting after the game
DBAHO replied to southsideirish71's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 04:00 PM) Sox pitching performed well enough to win Saturday. The offense let them down--again. The Sox offense hasn't performed all season. The starting pitching has been solid and the bullpen performed well earlier in the year. Even in recent games that the bullpen blew leads, the Sox offense didn't show up. The responsibility for this team's dismal record falls squarely on the shoulders of Dye, Konerko and Thome. They are paid big money and are counted on to carry the offense. Collectively, they have sucked all season so far. Jim Thome has a 1.025 OPS this season. He is NOT the reason the Sox are in the position they're in.
