  1. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 6, 2007 -> 08:10 PM) Anyway, when debating between Cintron and Uribe I find it pretty ridiculous to bring plate discipline or OBP into the argument seeing as they both suck at drawing walks and are free swingers by nature. I don't think anyone really knows who Juan Uribe is, whether he's the .833 OPS player he was in '04 or the .698 he put up last season is the true Juan but 2 things are for certain he's still one of the best defensive players in the game at an incredibly crucial defensive position and he's shown good power on a consistent basis. I don't disagree with that, because they both are terrible at taking walks, but you still have to consider the OBP's both players put up last season; Uribe - .257 Cintron - .310 That's still quite a difference b/w the 2 players. To me, Uribe's number is TOTALLY unaccepabtle in a plus hitting environment, while it would be berable for Cintron IF he had the defense that Uribe had, but unfortunately he doesn't.
  2. And here's another possible option, Luis Gonzalez; QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 6, 2007 -> 07:55 PM) Since when is getting on base one of Alex Cintron's strong points? I actually thought it was better than it was, but the numbers don't lie. Still I mean in my mind .285/.310/.392 looks better than .235/.257/.441. And I think both are certainly capable of raising their OBP's, Cintron's best is a .359 in 03 for the D-Backs, while Uribe's is .327 in 04 for the White Sox.
  3. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 6, 2007 -> 07:06 PM) Well I have watched quite a bit of Alex Cintron over the years and I can say with great certainty that the only things Cintron does better than Uribe are base running, contact (not by much) and cardio. Uribe kicks the s*** out of Alex in power and defensive prowess especially, 2 of the most important characteristics of a shortstop. Cintron just doesn't have the tools you look for in a starting shortstop IMO. The only thing Cintron has over Uribe in my mind is defense. I'd take Cintron's ability to hit for a better average and get on base at a better rate than for Uribe's ability to hit about 20HR's, when he's only going to get on base at a sub .300 rate. If Alex was given the chance to play everyday, I think he could put up numbers to what he did in his best season for the D-Backs.
  4. Maura Tierney was a good one. Larisa Oleynik has kinda fallen off the radar over the past 5 or so years.
  5. QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 6, 2007 -> 06:05 PM) Barmes would be a good bat, how's his D? IIRC, his defense his actually very good at SS, but last season he really crashed back to earth and hit only about .220. They just re-signed Jamey Carroll to a 2 year deal though, and have Quintella and Tuzlowski (something like that) ready in the minors. So if you could get him for a prospect, it could be worth looking at, and hoping he can rebound with the bat.
  6. Well if you're looking to trade for a replacement on the cheap, it's pretty slim pickings; Clint Barmes Juan Castro Jack Wilson Angel Berroa So good luck to KW on this one. I rate Cintron higher than most, so I don't think it's "THE SKY IS FALLING" if he has to play most days.
  7. LMAO at this; :00.0 ORL - D. Howard made a 28-foot three-pointer from the top of the arc. Assist: T. Ariza
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 6, 2007 -> 04:36 AM) I thought he'd start off at Charlotte too, but If the team wants Sisco working as a starter, there might not be room. Haeger/Floyd, Danks, Broadway, Phillips, Gio, Sisco. 6 guys, unless we move another starter somewhere. Phillips could be shipped off in a deal cos it doesn't seem the Sox are high on him, and Sisco could be the 3rd lefty in the pen, so I think there'll probably be room for Gio in Charlotte if they want.
  9. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) I'd bet Gio heads to Birmingham because he's very young. That's what I 1st thought when he was acquired as well, but it seems the indications from the Sox tend to indicate that he's probably going to start off the year in Charlotte. And I mean at his age, and with that HR rate he had last season, that might not improve much at a higher level.
  10. I've got a few; 1 - Jose Zazueta - 19 year old Mexican pitcher who pitched fairly well down at Rookie Ball. He may repeat there, or we could maybe see him in Kanny, if I was going to pick a pitcher who was going to be our next Dan Cortes, it'd be him. 2 - Salvardo Sanchez - Yeah he's been in the system for a little while and not really done much, but I'm hoping he's at least starting to get a better grasp on things such as plate discipline and making contact. So he's a guy I could certainly see having better numbers than last year. 3 - Richard Brooks. Same as Sanchez but a more high profile pitcher. Struggled at Kanny last season, and will probably repeat I'd guess, and if he does, he should be a lot better than he was last season. 4 - Ray Liotta. Has fallen off the map big time. Kind of like the Meyer (who was part of the Hudson package) scenario. But he's a guy who I think can get back to where he was at the start of last season in terms of his standing within the organization. And sorry Ace, no Matt Neurighner (I know I didn't spell that right) this season as my sleeper.
  11. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 03:55 PM) The bottom line is if these pitchers are really as good as KW says they are, then he is a genius and the Sox will be set for a long while, barring injury. But, he basically is calling Gio and Danks the best LH pitching prospects in baseball and Floyd a stud, with Masset and Sisco future All Stars as well. That is probably a pipe dream. Don't worry Dick, I don't buy this either. Don't get me wrong, Danks and Gio would be top 10 LHP prospects in the minors without a doubt, maybe top 5, but the best, well I think the likes of Scott Elbert etc. would have something to say about that. The thing with those guys you've mentioned last though, their value at the moment is basically the lowest it's been for a while, with the Floyd's and the Sisco's. It's up to the Sox's coaching staff to fix that, and get them back to where they were on a talent and potential level a couple of seasons ago, and to actually produce that at the major league level.
  12. QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 03:00 PM) So Masset's minor league performance isn't meaningful but one winter league stint is meaningful? I'm glad he did well in Mexico this winter, but all kinds of players do well in winter leagues and it is hard to attach much meaning to that. And I doubt that a winter league performance ever much affected any player's value. The fact that we did well with the Jenks reclamation project doesn't necessarily mean that any and every pitcher with good stuff that we acquire can be turned into a good reliever. Jenks and Massets situations are very, very different. Considering the role that we have in mind for Masset as a reliever, I take into consideration a lot more of Masset's performance in the Winter League considering; a) He was used as a closer B) Most recent performance Plus the guy didn't exactly do that badly when he was used as a reliever by the Rangers later on in the 2006 season. If Masset isn't used as a reliever at all during the past 6 months, and he's been used as a starter still, is he going to have the same value? No I don't think so. I think the Sox's track record for the relievers that they've acquired over the past 2-3 seasons, is extremely good, probably one of the top teams in the league if you compare it to others. Jenks was a super pickup, Matt Thornton had a good 1st season for the price of Joe Borchard who's no longer with the Seattle organization (just another wonderful trade in a list of many by Bill Bavasi (world's greatest GM)), and KW has obviously seen that, and targeted similar sort of power relievers in Aardsma and Masset this off-season, who they think with some help on their control and secondary pitches with Coop, that they can do better than they have previously.
  13. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 02:02 PM) No, my unstated point was more along the lines that it isn't quite fair to judge Masset only on his minor league track record because the majority of his innings in the minors were as a starter. I made the Jenks comparison in that both were bad as starters, but still had what could be called great stuff. I'm saying this; if Jenks were acquired before the 2005 season, you really wouldn't think you'd have anything by looking at his minor league stats. I'm just saying it's unfair to judge Masset on his minor league stats because, as I said, anywhere from 65-80% of his innings came as a starter. And there's the matter of Masset's winter league performance down in Mexico which really increased his value. Did very well as a closer down there. And say what you will about Jenks's potential, but he was a mess when the Angels released him off their 40 man roster. We had to rebuild his confidence, get him tomajorly improve his control etc. Can't see why we can't do that with Masset and turn into a good power reliever. And if he gains confidence from that, who knows the Sox could turn him into a starter then (unlikely though).
  14. I had dinner in Andrew Bogut's former house last night. Thought that was pretty cool.
  15. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 04:18 PM) He's definitely a canidate. Along with guys like Dirk, Duncan, Boozer, Kobe, Lebron. But damn, Nash is sick. He's shooting over 50% from the field AND from 3. He's up over 20 ppg. He's, of course, leading the league in dimes. He just gets better with age. Right now I'd call it a 2 man race b/w Nash and Arenas with Boozer close behind. But you're right on Nash, people think his stats would get worse as he gets older and more susceptible to injury, but that just hasn't been the case.
  16. 5 more; 1 - I walked up 1000 steps to reach the Great Wall. Never.Again. 2 - The 1st baseball game I saw was Arizona vs. Detroit at Chase Field. Jeremy Bonderman got shelled that day. 3 - I stood up and cheered loudly when Miggy Olivo hit a home run against the Angels a few days after event #2. 4- I think Daniel Negreanu is the greatest. 5- I used to play Basketball for a team called the Kangas (cue PA's Aussie jokes).
  17. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 03:35 PM) Question: If the season ended today, is Nash the MVP again? He's having his best season yet. Right now I'm going with Gilbert Arenas. That guy has been insane over the past month.
  18. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 02:19 PM) Luol Deng is just plain sexy. Having himself a very nice season, and has really become to Bulls go to guy on offense now. Borderline All - Star this season perhaps? Also Orlando pick up a nice win over the Clippers who have been playing well lately. Starting to get quite bottled up at the top of the Eastern Comference Standings now.
  19. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 02:40 PM) Hawks are gonna take two points from St. Louis tonight. I saw the ugly first period and went out after that. Anyone hae thoughts on the game? Seemed an excellent final period, and Savard probably laid into them after the 2nd period. Heck of a performance by Khabibulin, and you can probably put this win down to him. Performances like that are why we signed him to that huge contract. Luckily we ran into a team that is as terrible on the powerplay as we are, considering how many penalties we gave up tonight.
  20. So is this the best adventure sort of game anyone has played over the past couple of years? I'm debating b/w buying a Wii or a XBOX360 right now FWIW.
  21. We've dicussed the merits of signing Mark Mulder, and that was a flop, so for discussions sake Ii'm going to throw another name out there. Brian Lawrence. Now this is only in a situation where another SP like Buehrle is dealt for say Pelfrey and Milledge, which would then in my mind probably facilitate the need to sign a stogap SP for a season. Lawrence missed the 2006 season with shoulder surgery, but unlike Mulder had the surgery done earlier. From 2001 to 2004 for the Padres he was an excellent innings eater, and he's a good sinkerball pitcher which would fit in well at the Cell. Problem is he wants to pitch in the NL West. The D-Backs or Rockies would be smart to sign him in my mind, but the Sox should also just take a look at him at least.
  22. All the best there Irish, thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family. Hopefully things turn out well, and you'll bring us back some good news.
  23. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 2, 2007 -> 05:56 PM) It may be fair value on paper, but it's not a deal I'd ever want to do. Maybe I'm just being conservative, but I look at the innings. A good setup man/potential closer gives you 60-70 innings. A good starting pitcher gives you 200. I can understand maybe dealing a starter who's still hanging around the low levels, or making a move in-season for relief pitching if a hole actually appears. But right now, I see 6, maybe more people who can compete for slots in the 2007 White Sox bullpen, and potentially do a damn good job. 3 or 4 of them could close on most teams in the big leagues, they're all young, they're all cheap, and they're all under our control for several years. I see even dealing Broadway for him straight up as sacrificing some of our starting pitching depth to fix a problem that may not even be a problem mid-season. If we're desperate for a righty reliever at the deadline, I can't imagine the price would possibly be higher, and it might even be lower for someone else other than Cordero. That's the opposite sort of thinking to the MacDougall trade though. Let's say right now we had Lumsden still, and MacDougall was a Royal, would you still make that trade? Personally I don't think you're really trading for Cordero to "fix a problem". You're trading for him to make something that is already pretty good, and turning it elite. And if you look at the SP's that we've acquired, Broadway would be in the lower tier compared to those guys in terms of upside, which in my mind, in the right deal (would have to be a good one) certainly makes him expendable.
  24. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 2, 2007 -> 05:39 PM) So, if we trade Anderson, who plays CF? Tererro? Sweeney? Owens? Pods? Mack? That gives me the heebie jeebies. It'd be Sweeney. He'd hit for a higher average than BA did in 06, but for less power. And I rate BA highly of course. My point is, BA and Broadway for Cordero is probably fair value. The problem is, we're not in stocking up for 2007 mode are we, and that's why this deal probably doesn't make a lot of sense.
  25. The Cowboys vs. Seahawks game is going to be an absolute shootout. Seattle lost 2 of their corners yesterday, and are going to have to Jordan Babineaux (strong safety) as one of their starting corners, and maybe put Julian Peterson as the starting nickel cornerback. And the Cowboys have given up something like 14 TD's in the air over the past 4 games. I'd honestly take Roy Williams out, and put in 2 cover safeties. So it's probably the team that doesn't turn the ball over (e.g Romo please don't fumble 4 times again) who is probably going to win this one.
