  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 02:09 AM) Do they really? Jackson maybe, he had some solid games down the stretch last year, but isn't he hurt? We're not talking about forcing out guys who have been winning super bowls here I actually think the Vikings would have had a better chance to win the Superbowl with Sage behind center than Favre. I dunno, I guess if I were those 2, having a guy come in, who wasn't good at all last season, getting that type of money when he's not 100% and he doesn't even have to go through a training camp, it's not really a fair sort of situation. And how is the Vikings locker room going to welcome Favre I wonder. And how does that affect Brad Childress' authority as a head coach going forward? Lot of questions to be answered that's for sure.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 10:24 PM) I don't know how giving a guy who has never pitched above college $15 million and about 50% more than anyone in that same situation has ever received a win, but I'm glad he signed. I wonder if he'll live up to the hype. Well I think when you consider the numbers that we're being thrown around, and that the #2 pick Ackley who's really not an elite offensive prospect IMO got around $10M, $15M for Strasburg who's argubly the best prospect to ever come out of the draft is pretty good value for money. But it sounds like the owners and even the players want to install a rookie contract system in the next labor negotiations and it could be the #1 issue on the agenda.
  3. Nice to see Tony Romo isn't the most hated QB in the NFL again. As for Favre, he'll play well in spurts, but he'll eventually wear down with that arm / shoulder of his and it'll cost the Vikings big time when it's all said and done. Brett Favre only cares about one thing, and that's Brett Favre. But I feel sorry for Rosenfals and Jackson. They deserve better than this.
  4. Ugly win, but a win is still a win. Offense played well, Linebrink needs to be much better going forward. This is a series we really need to sweep.
  5. For $15M, I think the Nats have done very well there. They stuck to their principles, and came out on top. Now they've finally got something to build around.
  6. Angle retained the belt at Hard Justice also.
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 02:10 PM) Am I the only one who thinks "PED's" every time I see a record of any kind being broken in sports now? It would be the death of athletics if Bolt was found to be using PED's. And yeah, he'll break 9.50 easy so long as he can stay healthy.
  8. Yeah the MLB and the NFL need to implement the NBA style of rookie contracts, but I doubt we'll see it anytime soon. As for Strasburg, Bora$$ knows that the Nats need him if they are going to turn things around, and I think eventually come 11:58PM or so just before the deadline, a deal will get done. Both sides will lose too much if they can't get something done.
  9. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 16, 2009 -> 01:10 AM) Well, your first leg made you sweat it out! Yep they certainly did, Villa ruined it for me though. Good start for my Hammers beating Wolves 2-0. Another top 10 finish beckons this season. LOL at Everton also. Maybe Fabregas can get back to the form of 2 seasons ago.
  10. I wonder if they'll use the Wildcat formation in Philly more now after the Vick signing.
  11. English Premier League kicks off tonight. I have $100 on Chelsea beating Hull, Man United beating Birmingham and Aston Villa beating Wigan to get back $225.
  12. First of all you make sure that he's completely healthy and throwing at the same velocity as he was before the injury. Don't want another B.J Ryan situation here. But also Minaya is under a LOT of pressure in NY, and there are big rumors that he'll be replaced as GM at the end of the season, so I wonder what impact that would have on negotiations.
  13. Big outing from the bullpen, and nice to see some offense after the lack of runs in Seattle. Let's hope we can get some better starts from Gavin and Danksy over the next couple of days.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 15, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) Not having a back-up infielder that can hit from the left side really hurts. If we face any tough righties the next two weeks, it's going to be awful watching Nix have to face them. Well considering your starting second baseman hits RHP better than LHP, doesn't really make sense for Nix to be better against RHP. Just a matter of circumstance that Getz is injured and Nix is now starting. I don't think many people thought he'd have a .773 OPS at this point in the season also.
  15. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 02:10 AM) I just want to see Ireland in the WC for once. They keep coming up just short. They've got a crucial qualifier coming up against Cyprus in the next few days IIRC, but I agree that it'd be good to finally see em in a World Cup again. And they've got some talent in Robbie Keane, Shay Given etc. to possibly do some damage if things go their way. As for the Aussies, things are looking pretty rosy right now. They play the 4-2-3-1 formation very well, and they're becoming very hard to score against. As for the USA, you guys have got 3 games at home still right, so you should have no problem qualifying.
  16. I was one who probably criticised the move before it happened, because of concerns about Rios' offensive output which has decreased over the past couple of seasons. Whether or not that's something that can be fixed with his swing, whether he just needed a new start, or a manager like Ozzie who'll be on his ass a bit more I don't know. If he gets back on track and gives you good defense in CF, it's an excellent move. Whether or not that happens, we'll have to wait and see.
  17. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 12:08 AM) If you don't know what you're talking about it's best for everyone to refrain from saying it. 2007 (aka 2 years ago) 85.1 IP 3.27 ERA 1.101 WHIP 2:1 SO:BB 30 Holds 6.6 H/9 Those numbers are terrible!!! Not to mention he was argubly one of the best set-up relievers in baseball in the first 2 months of the season. I still have faith that he'll be an asset over the long - term. IIRC, he's under our control to 2011 also.
  18. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 08:25 AM) This is the typical US football I was talking about. They go into bunker mode and allow the other team to pepper the goal with shots and corners. You can't sit back on your heels and pray that your defense holds up. Especially when your back line is playing with some cards. Not having Altidore out there earlier is a joke as well. Well with a game in Mexico at a stadium that they've never won at, I can see the logic in wanting to play defensive, and get Mexico on the counter attack. In other news, Australia beat Ireland 3-0 in Ireland last night, Timmy Cahill getting a double. Could be our best international result in the past few years, as Ireland had only lost once in 12 games under Trappatoni before hand.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) Bad, very bad trade. His pitches just hang over the plate. I can't believe Ozzie used him over Dotel. For whatever reason, ever since the end of May, he's been pretty bad. But look at his track record before that, it was pretty good. I don't know how was you can really say it's a horrible trade unless; 1 - Pena doesn't get it turned around (could be injured or something is wrong mechanically with him) 2 - Allen becomes an above average first baseman in the major leagues which is something he hasn't done yet.
  20. Gotta be a nice feelin as a White Sox fan to see Thornton throwing that type of heat and making a quality hitter such as Ichiro look out of his depth at the plate.
  21. Born: 01/04/86, Brisbane, Australia Height: 6'3 Weight: 170 Bats: Left Throws: Right College: None Drafted: Signed as an undrafted FA by the Red Sox in 2003. Currently, James is 2-0 with a 4.71 ERA and a 19/4 K/BB ratio with Kanny. He had his contract sold to Kanny by the Midwest Sliders of the Frontier League. Nice to have another Aussie in the minors (might be the first since Thomas Brice).
  22. Pena's been good against RHH's so far this season, but he just blew it right there.
