  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 15, 2017 -> 09:42 PM) Moving Rodon now makes ZERO sense unless the offers are more for him than Q (and the odds of that are what?)...but he's one really solid season away from his value skyrocketing. Obviously, he could go town with TJS as well, but the only reason this even gets mentioned at all is because of Boras and the fact we know that Carlos is incredibly UNLIKELY to sign an extension into his FA years. I'm not up to date on current events, I apologize. Why would we be looking to deal Rodon at all, even next year? He's a young 24 year old kid with #1 or #2 stuff who gets paid very little. Isn't that the kind of player you rebuild with and keep around? Is it just because Boras is his agent? I don't get why the White Sox are absolutely unable to deal with any Boras clients. Isn't that position a bit antiquated nowadays and part of an ancient personal feud between Reinsdorf and Boras? If there's no way the Sox can deal with Boras for whatever reason then they should stop drafting Boras clients. Don't even go down that road from the very beginning...
  2. QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 12:37 PM) When I was a kid I was with my Dad at that double header where the Sox beat the Yankees the first game (can't remember the score). The second game Dick Allen hit a pinch-hit 3-run homer off Sparky Lyle in the bottom of the 9th inning (a frozen rope against the wind into the left field bleachers) and the Sox won 5-4 for the sweep. There's a great story behind it too about Chuck Tanner not being able to find Allen to pinch hit and he was in the clubhouse eating (I've heard tacos...but not sure). They sent the ball boy to find him. To this day it's one of the greatest sports moments I've seen live. Also saw him almost hit the scoreboard at old Comiskey...and for you older guys...you know how far that was. I spent so many fun days at old Comiskey. Allen is still my favorite player to this day... I never saw anyone come close to even landing a homer into the dead-centerfield bleachers over that huge wall that was probably 30 feet high and 430 feet out, much less hit the scoreboard beyond those bleachers. The best I ever saw were balls hitting that wall about halfway up on the fly. Anything that made it all the way to that wall was usually an automatic triple, just like balls hit today at Comerica Park in Detroit deep into the RF power alley. Eventually, the Sox installed a more reasonable "homerable" CF wall that was short - like only 8 feet - and about 400-410 feet away.
  3. QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Nov 9, 2016 -> 05:04 PM) Looks like I hit a nerve. They definitely don't cater to millennials. The Cubs do and it's why they will continue to win over more and more of the city until this team moves on to a new one. How do the Cubs cater to millenials? What are they doing that could be described as such?
  4. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Nov 2, 2016 -> 01:45 PM) The way I see it, the Cubs are in year 2 of their 5 year title contending window. They will be knocking on the door every year until these kids become FA's and begin asking for Dodger/Yankee/Red Sox money. The Indians are also in the beginning stages of their competitive window. With that said, the White Sox need to rebuild and trade off their assets. The target date should be 2019 or 2020 to be ready to compete. The White Sox arrival would ideally mean the departure of this Cubs era of sustained success. (2015-2020). The time is now to trade off assets like Sale and Quintana to obtain near MLB ready prospects. I was looking at the farm system depth today and I am starting to realize that we are getting some decent depth down there. (FINALLY!) Aren't the Cubs about as rich as the Dodgers/Yankees/Red Sox? Seems to me they could afford to keep a lot of their current players even when they come knocking for new contracts.
  5. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Nov 1, 2016 -> 09:00 PM) The Sox are done being relevant. They are now the Milwaukee Bucks or Cleveland Browns. This will be a cubs town and the Sox will just be here for s***s and giggles. Mainly, because our front office doesn't have a clue. Define "relevant" for me. Last I checked, none of the Sox fans I know are planning to switch to the Cubs because of this season or last. And none of their Sox fan kids are either. Sox fans haven't gone anywhere. They're still out there whether they're actually going to see games or not. Some winning will bring them back from the shadows quickly enough.
  6. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 1, 2016 -> 07:11 PM) One thing that hasn't really been mentioned is how little they're paying for the naming rights. As the deadspin article pointed out, this deal is $2.4 million AAV below league average. Further, if the White Sox are so cash hungry, why not keep the naming rights and change the name back to Comiskey Park, like most Sox fans want anyway, and just go forward with a full rebuild, which will put a lot more than $2 million AAV into the owners' pockets, and then go for a Citi Field-esque naming rights deal when a competitive team emerges from the talent purge? Is that even correct that most Sox fans want the stadium to be changed back to Comiskey Park? Have the fans been polled? The more I've read up on Charles Comiskey, the more the guy seemed to be a douchebag. And it's not like old or new Comiskey Park was associated with a grand legacy of winning World Series like Yankee Stadium. I'd be open to something entirely different and new.
  7. I was really annoyed when I first heard that it was going to be called Guaranteed Rate Field. But I also was pissed when New Comiskey changed into US Cellular Field, too. I've since made peace with the idea that stadiums these days are going to change their names frequently and have different corporate sponsors. I've stopped trying to remember the latest corporate sponsor on stadiums not only in the Chicago area, but nationwide. It's not worth the effort. Hell, I still call the music theatre at Harlem & I-80 the World Music Theater. I was politely informed recently that was like 3-4 names ago. I'd forgotten previous names like Tweeter Center, First Midwest Bank Amphitheater, etc. Actually, I won't be surprised when the day comes when they're not even called the Chicago White Sox anymore, but maybe something like Bank of America White Sox, General Electric White Sox, Google White Sox, etc. That may happen in 20 years for all we know. The city/state in teams' names may be cast away in favor of more corporate sponsorship and money. Don't forget that there once was a time when we never envisioned a company name being on a stadium. It's just Sox Park to me these days. I couldn't care less what company's name is on the stadium anymore or what their logo is.
  8. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) Doc: Maybe another way of putting it with what I posted earlier is this. (And I know this is a generalization). Most Sox fans don not believe this organization is capable of sustained success. They have lost confidence in them and they have lost credibility for a number of reasons. Some say that makes Sox fans bad, I say it makes them realistic and skeptical with good reason. Change those dynamics and I'm sure things will be fine...continue on the path they are on now and it's going to get worse. Just my opinion. Mark You're right about the chronic disbelief from the Sox fanbase that this organization is mostly a flash in the pan from year to year. Per your fact that the Sox are the only one of the old-time 16 teams to have never made the playoffs in consecutive years through all of these decades, who wouldn't be skeptical? It makes legitimate sense to wait longer before jumping on the bandwagon. Unfortunately, the Sox franchise doesn't have the longtime credibility or track record to warrant such unconditional faith. So if you look at it that way, perhaps what I said about winning isn't entirely correct. One season of winning here or there isn't enough, there must be some consistent winning over a period to seriously affect attendance in a positive way.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 03:18 PM) They did win 90 2 years in a row including a World Series the next year, attendance dropped. They made the playoffs the next year, the attendance dropped, 3 years later, spent most of the season in first place, the attendance dropped. There is no rhyme or reason here. We can move the bar for what will make White Sox fans show up to games like Bears, Cubs, Bulls fans do no matter what the state of their team. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Blackhawks once their run ends and they are just a meddling mediocre team for a while. I would imagine they have built up enough good faith that attendance won't change much. But the White Sox are the only major professional sports team in Chicago who wouldn't draw big in first place. That's fine, but there are consequences. The thought of some billionaire coming in on his white horse to buy the team from JR and starting to spend crazily thus setting attendance records is fantasy. Sox fans won't go until they win 90 games 3 years in a row? It will probably be a long time until they win 90 games 3 years in a row. You highlight a good point. Winning has some correlation to Sox fan attendance (as seen in 2006), but not always. I remember the attendance being surprisingly weak for a good portion of the historic 2005 season when they well ahead of the pack in first place from the get go. And it wasn't particularly strong in 2012 when they were battling with Detroit for the division title in September. The fans inexplicably didn't turn out as much as could have been expected down the stretch when the team needed the support. I admit it that as a Sox fan, I'm guilty of not showing up at the park for long stretches without realizing it. I guess I just love watching it on HD TV at home or at a neighborhood bar better than going down to the stadium.
  10. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 05:17 PM) It's an awful name but I personally couldn't care less. I don't mean to add to the negativity, but the second half of your statement is starting more and more to apply to my opinion of this franchise as a whole! LOL
  11. QUOTE (Saufley @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 04:05 PM) Sox Park for me. +1 Sox Park it is!
  12. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 04:00 PM) You're kidding, right? He could have a respectable ERA from now until the end of the season and no team would touch him with a 10 foot pole. Not a chance. The Sox are stuck with him. Yep, he's our latest incarnation of Adam Dunn. He is Sox property until the bitter end, a lemon out on the highway.
  13. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 17, 2016 -> 10:56 AM) ---------- Over the years I've been told by a number of folks both in the Sox organization and outside of it that no one really knows for sure why the Sox don't have a lot of their history. Rich King when he worked at WGN told me they didn't have much on the Sox in their library before 1983. Mike Veeck told me that contrary to rumors, his Dad did not take all that material when he sold the team. I did read a story years ago where when WGN moved into their studios on Bradley Place in 1962 they threw out all those thousands of feet of film they had shot during the 1950's. The story quoted the news director at the time on that...nobody knew it would be wanted or worth anything back then. Jeff Szynal who runs the scoreboard and is basically in charge of Sox historical material told me when he came on-board in 1984 he did a search to see what the Sox had. He found some film reels but they had deteriorated to the point where they couldn't be used, transferred or refurbished. I've been doing my best over the years to try to help the Sox in this regard from out of my library. Last August I sent them 14 CD's with historic audio game action, interviews, radio commercials etc. that I put together over several years. Bob was most appreciative of it. Mark I find the story about WGN to be completely believable. Decades ago, there was less emphasis on preserving and archiving historical audio and film. It happened A LOT in the music world where lots of great stuff was thrown away or allowed to deteriorate due to neglect. It just didn't occur to those people at the time that preservation was something that should be done.
  14. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Aug 16, 2016 -> 02:05 PM) And all of us sox fans need to thank jerry for keeping kenny around when he should of been let go to Toronto. Jerry and kenny have really messed up this organization for the last 16 years. According to to baseball america the sox had the #1 farm system in baseball in 2001. Since then kenny has dragged it down the the middle of the pack then to one of the bottom in his time frame of being gm. Kinda funny reading baseball America saying year after year of kenny trading away prospects for veteran players and jerry not spening more in drafts and international market. Luckily we got a world series out of it and one other playoff appearance in that time frame I can't believe that this franchise has only been to the playoffs TWICE in the past 16 years in a 5 team division. I repeat that fact to myself every so often and stare off into space in utter disbelief that it's true. How pathetic. The only saving grace is that one of our playoff appearances got us the whole banana.
  15. I would bring Morneau back at DH if he will come back, rebuilding or not. Seeing a stud leftie hitter in our lineup at the DH spot is refreshing. This is what we hoped for 6 years ago when Dunn was brought in.
  16. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 07:35 AM) I smell bulls***. He spoke this season about how playing for the Reds last season was draining. He would be sick of showing up at the ballpark every day if we were rebuilding. I agree. It's just sunshine-and-rainbows PR garbage for us fans to consume.
  17. All I have to say is that I sincerely hope that Abreu isn't Carlos Quentin or Gordon Beckham part II. A spectacular season followed by mediocrity which proved that the player wasn't for real and it was all just a flash in the pan in the beginning.
  18. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 18, 2016 -> 10:18 AM) Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but outside da dingers this season, Frazier has been pretty bad. He is currently rated 23rd in fWAR for 3B with the second worst defensive score, 4th worst UZR, 6th worst UZR/150 among qualified 3B. Not to mention he has been worth -2 DRS. He has the 2nd worst AVG and OBP among qualified 3B and a wRC+ of 100 which is the definition of league average. In short, while it's fun to look at his home run totals and see what could be, he has kinda been a disaster for the Sox this season. What is the criteria to be a "qualified" 3B?
  19. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jul 18, 2016 -> 10:04 AM) Matt Davidson OK, that might work. How's Davidson's defense? I don't know myself.
  20. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 18, 2016 -> 10:08 AM) Or Lawrie at third and Saladino at second (for the rest of this season anyway). Lawrie at 3B and Saladino at 2B would be a return to what I spoke about. Lawrie isn't a real 3B to me. We need some offensive power from that position, not a punch & judy hitter.
  21. QUOTE (Footlongcomiskeydog @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 06:38 PM) The White Sox playoffs odds are less then 5%. The playoff drought will continue. I'm grouchy today, so here's a rant: One playoff appearance in the past 10 years in only a 5 team division. This franchise is PATHETIC. I'm becoming more indifferent to this team with every consecutive year of failure. Only went to one game at the Cell this season so far and I'm not sure I'll go to a second. I'd rather watch my 10 year old kid's travel team. And don't ask "When do the Bears start?" They're a bunch of losers, too. They've made the playoffs just as infrequently lately.
  22. Lots of people are calling for dumping Frazier. But then what's the plan for 3B? Don't tell me Saladino, he can't hit enough to be an everyday player. I hated all those years we had garbage at 3B and don't want to go back to them: Connor Gillaspie Gordon Beckham Leury Garcia Marcus Semien Jeff Keppinger Edwardo Escobar Orlando Hudson Brent Morel Mark Teahen Jason Nix Josh Fields Yes, Frazier's batting average is terrible and his OBP is lower than we expected. But he plays reliable defense, provides what little power this team has, and his BA may not always be crap (don't forget that he's adjusting to a new league). At least he's a real major league third baseman and not some half-assed, makeshift player at the position. There has to be something viable to replace Frazier if we trade him.
  23. Blowing it up sounds appealing when a fan is raging after a series sweep, but you have to cool off and step back from the ledge. It's all too easy to talk about it (I've done it myself many times), but is anyone in here really patient enough to suck hard for the next 5 years while young players develop? Have all the possible ramifications of that kind of dramatic move been fully considered? I don't think so. Does anyone in here think that there are ready takers for all of the guys we'd like to trade off? That's not a foregone conclusion and it's a big assumption. It's entirely possible that we couldn't get back in trade what we're seeking, in which case you can't make the trades. Even if in a fantasy scenario we are able to trade each and every player for all of the return value we want, most minor league prospects don't pan out. What if we go through a rebuild, suck for 4-5 years, and have nothing to show for it? Then we suck for 5 more and we're approaching 20 years without making the playoffs. That is a distinct possibility, especially with faith in the front office at a low point. I don't want to turn into the Detroit Lions of baseball and make things even worse than they currently are. Sox ownership knows that they already have modest attendance by league standards. Even when the team started the season hot at 23-10, the attendance still wasn't that great. They have to retain a few all-star type players to lure fans to the ballpark, otherwise there will be 10 people at the Cell. That said, they will never trade all of the guys away, especially not a super-bargain like Sale. It's not happening. There still must be a face of the franchise and Sale is it in 2016. If the wager were available in Vegas, I would bet the house that the Sox will not do a total blow up no matter what happens this season. They will keep their core and start fresh at trying to build around it - same as they've always done.
  24. Has Shuck gotten a hit this season? If he has, I must have missed it. Geez he sucks!
  25. QUOTE (Saufley @ Jun 9, 2016 -> 09:03 PM) I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you. Not taking the bait. If you don't know why you are one of the few. If you're going to make inflammatory statements but provide no examples or facts to back them up, you should expect to be challenged. There is no "bait" here. You're ducking out without backing up anything you said.
